Pope Francis: Never use God as a cover for injustice
2015-02-20 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio)
Saying we must never use God as a cover for injustice, Pope Francis warned on Friday (February 20th) against those who follow all the outward signs of piety but then exploit or mistreat their employees. The Pope’s words came during his homily at his morning Mass celebrated in the Santa Marta residence
.
Pope Francis used his homily to reflect on how Christians, especially during Lent, should not confine themselves to outside signs of piety like fasting and charity and instead must reach out to those in need.
He said Jesus wants from us a fasting that breaks the evil chains, frees those who are oppressed, clothes those who are naked and carries out justice. This, he explained, is a true fasting, a fasting which is not a just an outward appearance or observance but a fasting which comes from the heart.
Love of God and neighbour are one and the same.

Pope Francis receives Bishops of Ukraine on ad limina visit
2015-02-20 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio)
Pope Francis on Friday met with the Bishops of Ukraine, who are in Rome for their ad limina visit. The Bishops were led by Major-Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk of Kyiv-Halych, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church; and Archbishop Mieczyslaw Mokrzycki of Lviv of the Latins
.
In keeping with recent custom, the Holy Father's prepared remarks were delivered to Bishops at the beginning of the audience, giving Pope Francis the opportunity to speak personally with the assembled prelates.
In his prepared remarks, Pope Francis spoke about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, assuring the Bishops of his continued closeness and prayers for the people of Ukraine. The Holy Father said he prayed especially for peace, and called on all parties in the conflict to “apply the agreements reached by mutual accord” and “to be respectful to the principle of international legality.”

grace-land,
couple of questions for you -- I am thinking about going to a Catholic church in the community. As a non-Catholic, what conduct is proper. i.e. standing, kneeling, etc. I just want to be respectful. Since my retirement, I have gone to several different churches, what I am looking for is a place to be "fed" and not a place where I am asked to do some of the "feeding" -- if you know what I mean.
Blessings.
Sister!
Thank you for thinking of visiting a Catholic church in pursuit of your spiritual nourishment.
1. Respectful conduct. When you come to mass, just watch what the other people are doing regarding standing, kneeling, etc. It might be helpful to sit at the back of the church. I think most churches have mass booklets in the pews, they're helpful in prayerfully following the mass, readings, gospel, etc.
2. "Fed" and spiritually nourished. Before I visit a new church in my area, I usually go online and look up the church and download its
weekly bulletin
--it gives me an idea of the mission of that particular parish church, schedule of masses, the pastor's reflections and other helpful information. It might be helpful to visit several Catholic churches in your community in order to find one that meets your spiritual needs and feels comfortable and welcoming.
Oh Sister, it is Lent and you're on a journey of discovery... Also, here are some links that might be helpful--

Thank you grace-land,
Depending on the weather, I will attend on Sunday.
The one I will be visiting is very small -- but I do know a couple of people who go there.
Thanks for the links and the advice.

VIP treatment for LGBT group at the Vatican? Not really.
Vatican City, Feb 19, 2015 / 05:19 pm
(CNA/EWTN News).- Vatican sources have cast doubt on reports of VIP treatment for New Ways Ministry, an American LGBT activist group that rejects Catholic teaching, at Pope Francis’ most recent general audience.
A source in the Prefecture for the Pontifical Household told CNA that “no requests are rejected” for the general audience seating in the so-called “reparto speciale,” which has a capacity of about 500 people.
While media reports said the group sat in a front section with dignitaries and special Catholic groups, this portrayal is questionable. The “reparto speciale” section of St. Peter’s Square is not considered part of VIP treatment. The seats are available on a “first come, first served basis,” and no chairs are specially reserved for a group of pilgrims.
Another Vatican source underscored that the press office knew nothing about the presence of the group at the general audience. He pointed out that “the group was treated as any other group of faithful in the square.”

Francis strongly criticizes gender theory, comparing it to nuclear arms
Feb. 13, 2015
Vatican City -- Pope Francis has strongly criticized modern theories that consider people's gender identities to exist along a spectrum, saying such theories do not "recognize the order of creation."
Speaking of gender theory in an interview in a new book released in Italy, the pope even compares such theories to genetic manipulation and nuclear weapons.
Gender theory is a broad term for an academic school of thought that considers how people learn to identify themselves sexually and how they may become typed into certain roles based on societal expectations.
Asked in the book about how important it is for Christians to recover a sense of safeguarding of creation and sustainable growth, the pope first speaks of the duty of all people to respect and care for the environment.
But he then says that every historical period has "Herods" that "destroy, that plot designs of death, that disfigure the face of man and woman, destroying creation."
"Let's think of the nuclear arms, of the possibility to annihilate in a few instants a very high number of human beings," he continues. "Let's think also of genetic manipulation, of the manipulation of life, or of the gender theory, that does not recognize the order of creation."
"With this attitude, man commits a new sin, that against God the Creator," the pope says. "The true custody of creation does not have anything to do with the ideologies that consider man like an accident, like a problem to eliminate."
"God has placed man and woman and the summit of creation and has entrusted them with the earth," Francis says. "The design of the Creator is written in nature."

Pope renews call to conversion for members of organized crime
2015-02-21 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio)
Pope Francis says that people involved in organized crime or who deliberately carry out acts of violence against others or the environment cannot call themselves Christian.
The Pope’s comments were contained in a speech delivered Saturday to pilgrims from the Diocese of Cassano all’Jonio, who had travelled to Rome on a ‘return visit’ to thank the Holy Father
.
In June last year, Pope Francis made a one day visit to the diocese in the southern Italian region of Calabria which has been deeply scarred by the local organized crime group, the 'Ndrangheta. During that visit the Pope had issued a call to conversion to all of those still involved in organized crime.
A call he renewed on Saturday, when he stated: “those who love Jesus, who hear and receive the Word and live in a sincere response to the call of the Lord cannot in any way give themselves over to works of evil”.
The Pope went on to say people who “violate the dignity of person; who program or carry out gestures of violence against others and against the environment” cannot call themselves Christian.
He added that external forms of piety without “a real conversion are not enough to be considered in communion with Christ and his Church”. Pope Francis appealed to “those who have chosen the path of evil and are affiliated to criminal organizations” to open their heart to the Lord. “The Lord is waiting for you and the Church welcomes you” he said “if your willingness to serve good is as clear and public as was your choice to serve evil”.

Pope Francis receives German Chancellor Angela Merkel
2015-02-21 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio)
Pope Francis on Saturday received German Chancellor Angela Merkel in private audience in the Vatican
.
An official communiqué said the cordial exchange between the two leaders focused on the fight against poverty and international crises, including the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
It also revealed that the wide-ranging talks touched on topics such as the alleviation of poverty, the role of women in developing countries, equality, and Germany's agenda for the upcoming G7 Summit in the southern German state of Bavaria in June.
Following the audience Merkel told journalists that the conflict in eastern Ukraine was at the center of the discussion with the Pope.
She reportedly said he gave her “a lot of encouragement" to proceed "decidedly and determinedly" to find a peaceful solution.
Pope Francis presented Merkel with a medallion depicting St. Martin giving his coat to the needy, saying it aimed to remind world leaders their job is "to protect their poor."
On her part. Merkel gave the Pope a CD with music by Johann Sebastian Bach and a donation to help children affected by conflicts in the Middle East.

Pope at Angelus: Lent is a time of battle against evil
2015-02-22 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio)
Pope Francis said Lent is a time where we struggle against the temptations of Satan and worldliness. His words came at his Sunday Angelus address at the end of which he announced the distribution of 50,000 free copies of a pocket-sized booklet called “Safeguard your Heart” containing reflections on Jesus’ teachings. Many of those distributing the booklets to the pilgrims present in St Peter’s Square were homeless people
.
In his Angelus address the Pope recalled how Jesus went into the solitude of the wilderness for 40 days where he successfully overcame temptations in “a hand-to-hand combat” with Satan. And through his victory over Satan, he said, “we have all triumphed but we need to protect this victory in our daily lives.”
He went on to explain how in the wilderness we can listen to God’s voice and that of the tempter. And we listen to God’s voice through his words and that why it’s important to read the Holy Scriptures because otherwise we’re unable to resist the lure of the evil one. The Pope said it was for this reason that he wanted to renew his advice to the faithful to read the Gospel every day and reflect on its meaning, even for just 10 minutes and carry around a copy in one’s pocket or bag every day. The Lenten wilderness, he continued, “helps us to say ‘no’ to worldliness, to “idols”, it helps us to make courageous choices in line with the Gospel and to strengthen our solidarity with our brothers and sisters.”

Pope Francis and Curia members begin spiritual exercises
2015-02-22 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio)
Pope Francis and other members of the Roman Curia began their annual spiritual retreat on the first Sunday of Lent (February 22nd
).
The retreat is taking place in the town of Ariccia, in the Casa Divin Maestro centre, about 20 miles south of Rome. The Pope is staying there, along with other members of the Roman Curia, from Sunday 22nd to Friday the 27th.
During the retreat Pope Francis will have no public meetings or audiences, including no Wednesday general audience.
The priest who is leading the spiritual exercises is Carmelite Father Bruno Secondin. The reflections will focus on the roots of the Christian faith and the inner strength to live it out consistently.

Spiritual Exercises for the Roman Curia begin in Ariccia The geography of Elijah
2015-02-23
On Sunday, 22 February, Pope Francis went to to Ariccia to participate in spiritual exercises for Lent at the House of the Divin Maestro of the Pauline Fathers. During the week, the Preacher, Carmelite Fr Bruno Secondin, will present a pastoral reading of the Prophet Elijah's theme of “Servants and Prophets of the Living God”.
Then at 6 pm Francis participated in Eucharistic Adoration and the celebration of Vespers, listening to the preacher's introduction in which he reflected on the invitation “leave your own ‘village’”. The next day, 23 February, they focused on Elijah's “school of mercy” and following his example of leading a “life on the periphery”, after a Eucharistic celebration on the theme: “Go East, hide yourself and return to your roots”.

Pope Francis declares Armenian saint Doctor of the Church
2015-02-23
(Vatican Radio)
Pope Francis has declared Armenian poet and monk, Saint Gregory of Narek, a Doctor of the Universal Church
. Meeting with Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Cause of Saints on Saturday ahead of his departure for Aricca on Lenten retreat, the Pope confirmed the proposal put forward by the Plenary Session of the Congregation to confer the title of Doctor of the Universal Church on the 10th century saint.
St. Gregory of Narek is widely revered as one of the greatest figures of medieval Armenian religious thought and literature. Born in the city of Narek in about 950 A.D., St. Gregory came from a line of scholars and churchmen.

Swiss Guard: We are ready to defend Pope from ISIS
Vatican City, Feb 24, 2015 / 02:17 am
(CNA/EWTN News).- The commander of the Pontifical Swiss Guard says the group of soldiers charged with protecting the Pope is on high alert and ready to act if any threat from ISIS materializes.
“We are ready to intervene. Our job is security. and as gendarmes we are well organized. We are ready if anything happens,” said Cristoph Graf.
At age 54, Graf is married with two children. Yet he and the other members of the Swiss Guard are willing to lay down their lives to protect the Holy Father.
In an interview with the Italian daily Il Giornale, published on Feb. 18, Graf responded to threats from ISIS militants, who stated in a recent video, “We will conquer Rome.”

Mexico protests pope’s language on ‘Mexicanization’ of drug trade
February 24, 2015
ROME — Mexico’s top diplomat has expressed “sadness and concern” over a note from Pope Francis, in which the pontiff referred to the growth of crime and drug trafficking in his native Argentina as a form of “Mexicanization.”
The phrase occurred in a private e-mail sent on behalf of the pope to a legislator and friend in Argentina named Gustavo Vera.
“Hopefully, we’re in time to avoid ‘Mexicanization’,” the pontiff wrote. “I’ve been talking with some Mexican bishops, and the situation is terrifying.”
Sent last Saturday, the note was made public by the politician, who posted it on the web site of an organization that fights human trafficking and sexual exploitation in Buenos Aires, where the pontiff served as archbishop for 15 years.
Mexico’s secretary of foreign affairs, Jose Antonio Meade Kuribreña, promptly met with the Vatican’s ambassador to Mexico, French Archbishop Christophe Pierre, to share what Meade described as “sadness and concern” over the term.

Pope did not intend to hurt feelings of Mexican people
25/02/2015 11:32
(Vatican Radio) On Wednesday, Father Federico Lombardi, SJ, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, made a statement clarifying an expression used by Pope Francis in an informal and private email.
The Vatican Secretary of State, he said, has sent a note to the Mexican ambassador to the Holy See, explaining that Pope Francis had no intention of hurting the feelings of the Mexican people “whom he loves very much,” or of ignoring “the commitment of the Mexican in combatting drug trafficking.” Father Lombardi noted that the expression “to avoid mexicanisation” had been used by the Holy Father in a “strictly private and informal email” in response to an Argentinian friend who is very committed to the struggle against drugs, and who had used the that expression.
“The note shows clearly that the Pope intended nothing else but to comment on the gravity of the phenomenon of drug trafficking afflicting Mexico and other Latin American countries,” Father Lombardi said. Precisely because of the seriousness of the situation, he continued, addressing the problem of drug trafficking “is a priority of the Government; to counter violence and to restore peace and serenity to Mexican families, by addressing the underlying causes of this plague.”

Pope, Curia reflect on superficial religiosity
2015-02-25 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio)
Pope Francis and the Roman Curia are in the middle of their weeklong Spiritual Exercises in Ariccia, outside Rome
.
According to L’Osservatore Romano, the retreat master, Carmelite Father Bruno Secondin, has shared reflections with the Curia on the prophet Elias.
In his reflection, Fr Secondin compared the worship of the false idols in Elias’ time with a modern-day religiosity that is interested in the superficial and in measures of faith “according to statistics.” He called the participants to authentic and “audacious” worship

Secondin to Pope and Curia: Success and money distract from God
Retracing one’s steps. The fourth day of the Lenten Spiritual Exercises preached by the Carmelitan Bruno Secondin and attended by pope Francis and the Roman Curia in the Pauline Fathers' retreat centre in Ariccia (Rome) began with questions, ideas and reflection: “What are you doing here? What are you searching for? Do you let yourself be surprised by God? Do you want to work out where it is you want to go?” Then “retrace your steps
”.
Secondin asked these questions in yesterday’s first meditation after dedicating time to the inner truth and the freedom of professing one’s faith to God, opening the path to the Lord’s proposal, Italian Catholic blog Il Sismografo reports.
The meditation was based as always on the story of the Prophet Elijah who shows determination but also an excessive self-centredness in defending the alliance between God and his people and ends up in a cave on Mount Horeb, feeling tired, defeated and scared.
In the afternoon meeting of Tuesday 24th Secondin ended his proposal for an “examination of conscience”, looking at Elijah’s tragic situation. As described in chapter 19 of the First Book of Kings, Elijah finds himself in a state of “mortal depression”, on the run, alone and disappointed by his own failure. A depression which, Fr. Secondin said, is not so rare “even in a priest’s life. Many people break down, even priests”. So we need to watch out for certain signals that could turn into inner difficulties.
First of all “fear”. We encounter fear when we think about the future or taking on responsibilities. And fear is often accompanied by “loneliness”, a sense of “emptiness” caused by a life of disappointment at failures we may have had, by a “psycho-physical breakdown” and by “self blame” (Elijah himself says: “I am no better than my fathers”).
This can lead to “flight” – which may be physical or imaginary, psychological – or to the obsessive repetition of certain gestures (for example alcohol and food consumption or escape into the virtual world) or even the “wish to die”.
In order to deal with these human, psychological and spiritual dramas, Secondin said it is important to conduct a life in which “there is a balance between work, rest, prayer and social interaction”.

Apostolic Nuncio in Syria says population feels abandoned
2015-02-26 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio)
Although he is in retreat in the hills of Rome, immersed in Lenten Spiritual Exercises, Pope Francis is following the situation in Syria with deep concern
.
Speaking to Vatican Radio, Archbishop Mario Zenari, the Apostolic Nuncio in Damascus, says "the Pope is constantly adjourned of developments and his prayers are tuned to the suffering of the people".
A three-day offensive this week has seen at least 220 people abducted by so-called Islamic State militants, most of them from Assyrian Christian villages in the north east.
Not only the Christians are afraid - Archbishop Zenari says – and those who have the possibility to do so are fleeing the region.
He says that the perception of the people is that they have been abandoned by the International Community because there have been no tangible changes to the situation as yet.

French finance expert wins “Centesimus Annus” Foundation Award
2015-02-26 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio)
French economist and author Pierre de Lauzun is the winner of this year’s “Economy and Society Award” of the Centesimus Annus – Pro Pontefice Foundation
.
He was selected in particular for his 2013 book dedicated to a Christian perspective of finance from medieval banking to contemporary financial models: "Finance. Un regard chrétien. De la banque médiéval à la mondalisation financière".
The prestigious international Award was announced today at a press conference in the Vatican.
During the event presided over by jury members, the winners of the “youth” section of the Award were also announced along with their theses focusing on the importance and influence of the Social Doctrine of the Church on international relations, and on scientific debate.
Owing its name and birth to Saint John Paul II’s 1991 Encyclical “Centesimus Annus” – the Foundation’s main aim is to promote and raise awareness of Christian Social Doctrine among professionals whose work has an impact on society.

Pope Francis at the close of the Spiritual Exercises - With a piece of Elijah's mantle
2015-02-27 L’Osservatore Romano
The meditations this morning, Friday 27 February, in Ariccia were the last of the Spiritual Exercises in which the Pontiff and members of the Roman Curia participated
. Meditations were led by Carmelite, Fr Bruno Secondin, in the chapel of the House of Divin Maesto belonging to the Pauline Fathers. At the end of his reflection Friday morning, Pope Francis wanted to thank the preacher. “On behalf of everyone, myself included,” the Pope said, “ I would like to thank the Father, for his work with us in the exercises. It isn't easy to lead priests in exercises! We are all a little complicated, but you managed to do some sowing. May the Lord make these seeds that you gave us grow. And I wish for myself and I wish for us all that we may leave here with a little piece of Elijah's mantle, in our hands and in our hearts. Thank you, Father”.
The last stop of the itinerary of reflection and prayer proposed by Fr Secondin was centered on the biblical narrative in the Second Book of Kings (2:1-14) which describes Elijah's final farewell to his disciples and to Elisha, his ascent in the chariot of fire and the start of the mission of Elisha, who disrobes himself and puts on the mantle of his master and, on the River Jordan, he is recognized as the true heir of the prophet. It is an intense story, filled with tenderness, in which the characteristic hardness of Elijah melts a little.
