Pope at Audience: Resentment and sadness must not infect our lives
05 April 2023, 09:25

At the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis reflects on the final words of the Gospel reading of the Passion of the Lord, and points to the hope which Jesus revealed on the cross as he was stripped of everything.
By Francesca Merlo

Addressing the faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square for his weekly General Audience, Pope Francis reflected on the Passion of the Lord that we heard on Palm Sunday, and in particular, on the final words of the gospel passage: “They sealed the stone”.

The Holy Father noted that everything seemed over and that, for the disciples, the boulder signified the final end of their hope. The Teacher was crucified, killed in the cruelest and most humiliating manner, hung upon the infamous gallows outside the city – a public failure, the worst possible ending.

The Pope recalled that, today, this discouragement seems normal as we too have gloomy thoughts and frustrating feelings. “Even today, hope sometimes seems to be sealed behind the stone of mistrust,” said the Pope.

Pope revises penal law of the Eastern Churches
05 April 2023, 14:12

With a new Apostolic Letter issued motu proprio, Pope Francis introduces changes to the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches. The changes are similar to those made to the Latin Code of Canon Law in 2021, while preserving the distinctive characteristics of Eastern canon law.
By Vatican News

In a new Apostolic Letter issued motu proprio, Pope Francis has revised the penal law of the Eastern Churches, harmonizing some aspects of the Eastern discipline with that of the Latin Church, while preserving the distinctive features of Eastern law. The Letter, with the incipit Vocare peccatores [full text in Latin], was signed on 20 March, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, this year, and published on Wednesday. The new law will enter into force on 29 June 2023, the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul.

Pope Francis had already amended Book VI of the Code of Canon Law concerning penal sanctions in the Latin Church in 2021, with the Apostolic Constitution Pascite gregem Dei. This was a work of revision begun under Pope Benedict XVI.

New interview: "Pope Francis appears in an 83-minute Spanish-language documentary entitled "Amén. Francisco responde" (Amen, Francis answers questions)"

In open dialogue with Pope, ten young people ask tough questions
05 April 2023, 16:00

Pope Francis engages in conversation in Spanish with ten young people, most far from the Church, answering questions on a host of modern-day issues such as sexual identity, feminism, abortion, migration, abuse, loss of faith, the role of women and more. The hour and twenty minute dialogue can be viewed on Disney+ from 5 April 2023.
By Felipe Herrera-Espaliat

Pope Francis appears in an 83-minute Spanish-language documentary entitled "Amén. Francisco responde" (Amen, Francis answers questions) directed by Spaniards Jordi Évole and Màrius Sánchez, released on 5 April 2023 on the Disney+ streaming platform. The Pope is relaxed, smiling and joking, and in other moments very serious, moved and grieving. But he is always ready to answer the complex questions put to him by young people from all over the world.

The dialogue was filmed in June 2022 in Rome's Pigneto district when the Pope was suffering from severe pain in his right knee. This is why he appears frail while walking, but not when answering the tough questions of the young people, all Spanish speakers between the ages of 20 and 25, and hailing from Spain, Senegal, Argentina, the United States, Peru, and Colombia. Although at first they seemed a bit anxious, after the Pope arrived they went from shyness to confidence, and sometimes to boldness, in asking frank questions about the role of women in the Church, feminism and abortion, bearing witness to faith and its loss, sexual identity, the drama of migration, and racism.

Pope Francis at Chrism Mass: Invoke Holy Spirit as the breath of each day
06 April 2023, 10:08

During Chrism Mass in the Vatican on Holy Thursday, Pope Francis thanks priests for the good they do, which so often goes unrecognized. And he encourages them to invoke the Holy Spirit as 'the breath of each day,' which, even in times of crisis, gives them joy and points them in the right direction, toward Christ.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"Priestly maturity comes from the Holy Spirit and is achieved when He becomes the protagonist in our lives."

Pope Francis gave this reminder on Holy Thursday morning during the Chrism Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, as he urged priests to invoke the Spirit not only as "an occasional act of piety," but as "the breath of each day."

In his homily, the Pope thanked priests for their service, which often goes unrecognized, as he reflected on the Holy Spirit.

The Pope recalled Jesus saying, in today's readings, that the Spirit of the Lord was upon Him, and underscored that without the Spirit "there can be no Christian life; without His anointing, there can be no holiness."

Pope on Holy Thursday: Life is beautiful when we help each other
06 April 2023, 17:58

At the Mass of the Lord's Supper at Rome's Casal del Marmo juvenile penitentiary, Pope Francis reminds us of how the Lord, in washing the feet of his disciples, teaches us the importance of humility and service that are born of a noble heart.
By Thaddeus Jones

On Holy Thursday Pope Francis went to the outskirts of Rome to celebrate the Mass of the Lord's Supper at the Casal del Marmo juvenile penitentiary where he carried out the traditional rite of the washing of feet of twelve of the young people there. Diversity characterized the group, varying in ages from 14 to 25 years of age, ten young men and two young women, two of them of Sinti origin, the others from Croatia, Senegal, Romania, and Russia, representing various faith traditions.

The Pope previously visited the Casal del Marmo institution in 2013, right after he became pope, when he chose to celebrate the Holy Thursday liturgy "in Coena Domini" there.

Singing this song on Holy Thursday can purify your soul (and save you time in purgatory)
By Francesca Pollio Fenton
Denver Newsroom, Apr 6, 2023 / 07:00 am

Did you know that it is possible to sing a special song of adoration on Holy Thursday and have your soul purified?

It’s true, and the song is “Tantum Ergo.”

First, some background. A plenary indulgence is a grace granted by the Catholic Church through the merits of Jesus Christ, Mary, and all the saints to remove all the temporal punishment due to sin.

What does this mean?

“An indulgence does not confer grace. An indulgence is not a remission of the guilt due to sin. The guilt due to sin is ordinarily taken away by the sacraments of baptism and penance (confession), in which we receive forgiveness for sins through Jesus Christ,” the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) explains in this helpful Q&A.

“Although guilt is taken away, and with it the eternal penalty that is due to sin, namely, damnation, the eternal loss of the presence of God, there remain consequences for sins that those who have committed them must bear. There is what is traditionally called the temporal punishment for sin.”

What is temporal punishment? As the USCCB explains: “Every sinful act creates a disorder within the soul of the human person; it distorts our desires and affections, leaving us with ‘an unhealthy attachment to creatures, which must be purified either here on earth, or after death in the state called purgatory.’”

Vatican: Pope Francis will not attend Stations of the Cross at the Colosseum due to cold weather
By Courtney Mares
Rome Newsroom, Apr 7, 2023 / 09:10 am

The Vatican’s most recent statement cited the “intense cold” as the reason why the pope was opting out of the outdoor Stations of the Cross, which will take place at 9:15 p.m. local time.

Italian meteorologists have predicted that Easter Sunday could be colder than Christmas in many parts of country. In Rome, the temperature is forecasted to dip down to 50 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday night with wind and thunderstorm warnings in place during the Stations of the Cross.

Pope Francis will still attend the veneration of the cross during the celebration of the Lord’s Passion inside St. Peter’s Basilica earlier on Good Friday at 5 p.m.

5 ways to solemnly celebrate Good Friday
By Francesca Pollio Fenton
Denver, Colo., Apr 7, 2023 / 04:00 am

Good Friday is considered for many one of the holiest days of the liturgical year. Part of the Triduum, Good Friday is the day the Church turns its attention to the cross on Calvary. It is the somber day Jesus Christ was crucified.

Catholic churches everywhere can be seen with a bare altar and with the door of the empty tabernacle open. As the Church mourns, Catholics are also called to solemnly observe this holy day.

Here are some ways you can solemnly celebrate Good Friday:

1. Attend the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at your local parish.

Cardinal Cantalamessa: God is not dead. His death brings us true life
07 April 2023, 18:12

At the Good Friday liturgy of the Passion of the Lord at St. Peter's Basilica, the Preacher of the Papal Household, Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, reflects on the Death and Resurrection of the Lord in our secularized societies.
By Lisa Zengarini

Before the Way of the Cross in the Colosseum on Friday evening, Pope Francis presided over the liturgy of the Passion of the Lord at St. Peter's Basilica, commemorating the last hours of Jesus' life.

“Death of God” - Reinterpreting Nietzsche

The homily was pronounced by Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, O.F.M. Cap., the Preacher of the Papal Household, who focused his reflection on the ideological “Death of God” the modern secularized Western world has been experiencing for over a century, and which found its fullest expression in the famous words Friedrich Nietzsche put in the mouth of the "madman" in his “The Joyful Science”.

Way of the Cross gives voice to a humanity wounded by war
07 April 2023, 22:29

The traditional Good Friday Way of the Cross procession unfolds at Rome’s Colosseum, with texts chosen by Pope Francis to reflect the suffering of humanity as it lives the third world war fought piecemeal.
By Linda Bordoni

An unseasonal cold snap in Rome kept Pope Francis from being physically present at the Colosseum on Holy Friday night for the Way of the Cross procession.

Considerations regarding his health after a three-day stay in hospital last week for a bronchitis, led to him having to follow events from his residence in the Vatican.

But his presence was tangible in the meditations he personally chose to remember the day of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In fact, each of the 14 stations of the cross featured the testimony and the prayers of men and women of our time, whom he has had occasion to meet and listen to during his many apostolic journeys, and who have experienced war, poverty, displacement and injustice in almost every corner of the globe.

Papal message: "The Pope reflects on the meaning of the Resurrection in a message published by the weekly Italian magazine L’Espresso"

Pope Francis: 'Integral disarmament is not a utopia'
07 April 2023, 17:24

The Pope reflects on the meaning of the Resurrection in a message published by the weekly Italian magazine L’Espresso. He turns his attention to the war in Ukraine and in other countries and quotes Pacem in Terris, as a source from which to find the courage to say “no” to rearmament and violence "because true peace cannot be born of fear".
Francis

What can we hope for in a world that is so scarred by war and violence? We continue to see the terrible images that reach us from tormented Ukraine, and too often, we do not remember other forgotten conflicts, other hotbeds of violence, the many 'pieces' of the Third World War that we are unfortunately living through.

Today is Easter, today for us Christians, the Prince of Peace rises again, that Jesus of Nazareth who, upon his entrance into the Upper Room where his apostles were gathered, full of fear for having seen him die on the cross, said to them: "Peace be with you!"

Peace be with you is the greeting we exchange on this day. To truly say 'no' to war and violence, it is not enough just to silence weapons and stop the aggressors. It is necessary to uproot the roots of wars and violence, which are resentment, envy, and greed. I like the fact that these days some media, like your weekly magazine, decides to give a space and a voice to peacemakers. One must have the courage to 'disarm' hearts, to 'demilitarise' them, to remove poison and resentment.

6 hot-button issues Pope Francis and Gen-Z confront in new Disney doc
By Peter Pinedo
Washington D.C., Apr 7, 2023 / 14:00 pm

“The true Church is at the peripheries,” Pope Francis says in Disney’s new documentary “The Pope: Answers,” which was released April 5.

Directed by Spanish filmmaker Jordi Évole and available exclusively on Hulu in the U.S. The one hour and 23 minute-long documentary shares a conversation between the pope and 10 young people from around the world.

Filmed in a poor, working-class neighborhood in Rome, the documentary is entirely in Spanish but accessible to English audiences through subtitles.

Throughout the film, Francis maintains that the Church cannot allow itself to become “a club of nice people,” that is a group of people “who do their religious duties but lack the courage to get out to the ‘suburbs.’”

Using the term “suburbs” to describe those on the peripheries of the Church and faith, Francis shared his belief that it is the Church’s job to go out to those people at the very edges.

Pope at Easter Vigil: Risen Lord invites us to revive our faith and rise to new life
08 April 2023, 21:10

At the Vigil Mass in the Holy Night of Easter in St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Francis says Christ's resurrection invites us to experience the immense surprise and joy of the women who witnessed the empty tomb, adding that we are called to relive the grace of our first encounter with the Lord to grow in faith and hope.
By Thaddeus Jones

Pope Francis presided over the traditional Easter Vigil in the Holy Night of Easter in a full Saint Peter's Basilica on Saturday evening. The celebration started inside at the entrance of the Basilica with the evocative rite of the blessing of fire followed by the candlelight procession while Lumen Christi was sung and the Basilica lights came on in all their brilliance. The celebration included the baptism and confirmation of eight catechumens from Albania, the United States, Nigeria, Italy and Venezuela.

In his homily, Pope Francis underscored how the women who set out to visit Jesus' tomb and found it empty underwent an incredible experience that marked a passage from the immense sorrow of over Jesus' death to experiencing utter amazement over the Lord's resurrection. And this journey from sadness to indescribable joy is one to which we are all called.

Uh, oh...

Wikipedia had the wrong Vatican City flag for years. Now incorrect flags are everywhere
By Jonah McKeown
St. Louis, Mo., Apr 8, 2023 / 13:00 pm

The flag of Vatican City, with its distinctive yellow and white, is instantly recognizable to many Catholics. Likely far fewer people, though, have scrutinized the papal coat of arms on the right-hand side, instead taking the intricate design — which includes famous crossed keys — for granted.

As it turns out, there’s a good chance that the coats of arms on many of the Vatican flags you’ve seen out in the world are rendered incorrectly. And it took until 2023 for the internet to start taking notice.

Imagine you wanted to print your own version of the Vatican flag. Where would you go to find a high-quality picture of one? If you’re like most internet users, your first stop would probably not be the Vatican’s official (but admittedly outdated) vatican.va website. You’re probably going to pull up Wikipedia, one of the world’s most visited websites and an endless storehouse of free image content. Flagmakers the world over appear to have done so over the years.

Imagine many people’s surprise, then, to discover that the image of the “Flag of Vatican City” displayed on Wikipedia has been wrong several times over the years, most recently from 2017 to 2022. (It was also wrong from 2006–2007.)

What is “wrong” about these flags, you might ask? It’s a small detail in the grand scheme of things but easy to spot once you know about it. The erroneous Wikipedia file includes a red disk at the bottom of the papal tiara as well as a different shade of yellow on portions of the coat of arms.

Pope Francis presides over Easter Sunday Mass
09 April 2023, 11:33

As the Church celebrates the most joyous day of the liturgical year, Pope Francis presides over Mass on Easter Sunday in St. Peter’s Square to mark the Resurrection of Christ.
By Devin Watkins

Over 45,000 pilgrims filled a sunny St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday morning.

The Catholic faithful were joined by tens of thousands of flowers from the Netherlands, which adorned the steps leading up to the Vatican Basilica and continued an annual tradition begun in 1985.

Pope Francis presided over the Mass on the Solemnity of the Resurrection of the Lord, better known as Easter Sunday.

Pope at Regina Coeli: May we be joyful proclaimers of the Gospel
10 April 2023, 12:20

On Easter Monday Pope Francis leads the recitation of the Regina Coeli prayer in Saint Peter's Square. He recalls how the women in the Gospel hurry to share the news of the Risen Lord and teach us that we encounter Jesus by witnessing to him.
By Thaddeus Jones

Pope Francis greeted pilgrims in Saint Peter's Square on Easter Monday for the midday recitation of the Regina Coeli prayer, which is said in place of the Angelus during Eastertide from Easter Sunday to the end of Pentecost. The Regina Coeli, Queen of Heaven, recalls Christ’s victory over death.

In reflecting on today's Gospel that recounts the women disciples who find the empty tomb and encounter the Risen Jesus on Easter morning, Pope Francis recalled that they were the first to go to the tomb and became the first bearers of the good news of the resurrection.

Pope: the Devil seeks man's failure but can do nothing if there is prayer
11 April 2023, 10:54

In a previously unpublished interview, contained in the newly released book "Esorcisti contro Satana” (Exorcists against Satan) by Italian journalist Fabio Marchese Ragona, Pope Francis reiterates that the Devil always tries to attack everyone and sows discord, even in the Church, trying to set up one against the other. The book, published by Piemme publishing house, hit Italian shelves on Tuesday.
Vatican News

“Esorcisti contro Satana” , shines a spotlight on the action of the Devil in our world based on the testimonies of important exorcists and victims of demonic possessions who have found the courage to tell their stories to Italian journalist Fabio Marchese Ragona

In the interview, Pope Francis was asked to comment on the testimony of a young nun, whether he has ever dealt directly with cases of demonic possession and exorcism, and if the Devil can also act in the Vatican and even attack the Pope.

Vatican prosecutor: Pope Francis wants the truth about ‘Vatican girl’ case
By Courtney Mares
Rome Newsroom, Apr 11, 2023 / 10:15 am

The chief prosecutor of the Vatican City State court met Tuesday with the brother of Emanuela Orlandi, a teenage girl who went missing from Vatican City nearly 40 years ago.

Vatican prosecutor Alessandro Diddi said April 11 that Pope Francis has granted him “maximum freedom of action to investigate [Orlandi’s case] on a broad scale without conditions of any kind.”

“Pope Francis tenaciously pursues the desire for absolute transparency, the search for truth and purification,” Diddi said in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera.

Emanuela Orlandi was the 15-year-old daughter of Ercole Orlandi, an envoy of the Prefecture of the Pontifical House and a citizen of Vatican City State. Her disappearance on June 22, 1983, after leaving for a music lesson in Rome dominated headlines and has been the subject of speculation for years.

Sixty years after its publication, Pacem in terris continues to be the North Star that points the way for those who, especially in the field of diplomacy, are committed to promoting dialogue between peoples and building peace between nations. Ukraine faults Vatican for ‘equating victim and aggressor’ during Way of the Cross
By Jonah McKeown
St. Louis, Mo., Apr 10, 2023 / 13:30 pm

A spokesman for Ukraine’s foreign ministry criticized the Vatican’s decision to have the words of two young people from Ukraine and Russia read aloud during Good Friday’s Stations of the Cross, held at the Colosseum in Rome, as part of prayers for peace in Ukraine.

Pope Francis has called for peace in Ukraine on numerous occasions, but the Ukrainian official said the juxtaposition of the words of the two young people was not “conducive to reconciliation” because it did not acknowledge Russia’s role as the aggressor in the war.

“We are deeply grateful to Pope Francis for his concern for Ukraine and Ukrainians. Unfortunately, we are forced to state that this year’s procession was once again overshadowed by an attempt to equate the victim and aggressor … We are disappointed that the Holy See did not take into account the arguments of the Ukrainian side about the offensive nature of such a gesture,” Oleg Nikolenko, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, wrote in an April 8 Facebook post.

“The joint participation of a Ukrainian and a Russian distorts the reality in which Russia plunged Ukrainians, embodying genocide against them … Trying to put an equal sign between Ukraine, which is suffering, and Russia, which is causing suffering, is not conducive to reconciliation. Reconciliation can only come after a Ukrainian victory, punishment of all Russian criminals, repentance for the suffering caused, and a request for forgiveness from Ukrainians.”
