Did anyone see the topic I started last week about Homecoming Dance?  I am like older than the Sun, but I have had a thought about that lately....who I was with, what I wore, the songs playing.  I remember it being a very good night.  Does anyone else have a memory of that?

I saw that with Deenie. No don't have a memory to share. As I never went to a Homecoming Dance or to my Senior prom. By the time I thought I would like to go to Homecoming, I meant my hubby and since he was older and in the Navy, it just didn't seem like a good idea.  ::MonkeyDevil:: Have a good night.

Blogger Admits Story of Terminally Ill Baby Is a Lie

A blogger who wrote of deciding to give birth to a terminally ill baby, attracting a following of thousands of supporters online, admits now that the entire story was made up.

The woman behind the hoax isn't "April's Mom" — a single expectant mother who lay awake at night terrified her unborn child would die at any time, according to the Chicago Tribune.

She is actually Beccah Beushausen, a 26-year-old social worker from the Chicago suburb of Mokenka who says she didn't know how to free herself from the web of lies she wove.

"Soon I was getting 100,000 hits a week, and it just got out of hand," she told the Tribune. "I didn't know how to stop. ... One lie led to another."

The blog reached its peak at nearly a million hits when Beushausen wrote that baby April Rose was born alive at home — and then died mere hours later, the paper reported.

Anti-abortion supporters were captivated by her story, logging on each night to read about her plight and saying they were praying for her.

Some followers even sent gifts and photographs to the post office box she listed online. Parenting Web sites that oppose abortion promoted her site.

But the web of lies began to unravel when a photo of a lifelike doll posted as a supposed picture of baby April Rose raised suspicions, according to the Tribune.

"I have that exact doll in my house," dollmaker and blog reader Elizabeth Russell of Buffalo, N.Y., told the newspaper. "As soon as I saw that picture, I knew it was a scam."

When supporters of "April's Mom" found out her story was fiction, they were outraged and demanded that the blogger be unmasked and held accountable.

"I know what I did was wrong," Beushausen told the Tribune. "I've been getting hate mail. I'm sorry because people were so emotionally involved."

There's no evidence that Beushausen profited financially from the hoax or committed a crime.

I promised pictures of the tail of a tornado to the north of my house, it is kinda blurry as I got a little concerned at that moment having that image right in front of me but the tornado tail is in the middle of the picture in line with the power lines.  This tornado touched down north of me about 15 miles but it formed and started in the vicinity of my home:

My son was having a fit cause I was on the back deck taking these pictures and yelling at him to find someplace, anyplace we could hide.  No basement so you get this feeling that you are trapped.  I did get really nervous when I took this picture and it was the last of 4 pictures I took and then I ran inside and paced the floors. But we survived another round and hopefully many more to come.  My next home will have a basement though.

Yeah I think if I lived in tornado area I'd have either a basement or some kind of concrete room/bomb shelter type of thing.

That is really a slap in the face to those that have had problem pregnancies and infants that have died.  So she's "sorry because people were so emotionally involved".  Sorry doesn't cut it.  No wonder she's been getting hate mail.  What has she done to try to atone?  As for myself, one of my children died due to prematurity right after her birth.  My next pregnancy, I was about 6 months along and I went to see the doctor, because I couldn't feel the baby moving. The doctor thought I was just worried.  There was no fetal heartbeat.  I can't describe what it was like after that.  I just wanted to slam my head in the car door over and over on the way to the hospital.   And this woman makes up a story like this?  She can go to hell and rot there.

I am sorry Muffy to hear of your pain and loss.  I just can't imagine what makes people go to such deceitful and sick lengths to gain attention.  What is so wrong with just being ourselves. Both the good and the bad. 

Mytime- I think people that make up stories like the one we are discussing are true attention whores, with no thought to anyone but themselves.  It's all about them.  They have sad little lives.  No self esteem.  They cannot accept themselves for who they are and so they try to create something to talk about.  You see, I like the part where you just said "what is wrong with just being ourselves.  Both the good and bad".  I totally agree with you mytime.  In the words of John Prine "we are who we are and we ain't who we ain't". 
We all have the good and bad in life, but then that's life.  No need to make stuff up  ::MonkeyHaHa::

Artcolley~ I think people in general are good and caring.  Most people that would read a story about a woman that was to give birth to a terminally ill baby would feel compassion, including women that have children or hope to have children. Would there be any reason to believe she wasn't truthful?  And then to find they have been deceived by lies.  Why?  Why do this?  I just don't know.  I really do feel for the people that were kind and compassionate to this woman.   I am disgusted by it, but the people that were emotionally invested must feel so much more.  And how does that affect the way they see things now?

I have to agree with you.  People are generally good and caring.  However, it is these kind of sick people that do jade the caring people over time.  I am sure many are left wondering who and what they can believe now. 

I know people can invent whomever they want to be on line, but why would you want to??  I would think it would only make them feel worse about themselves and their own lives.

If theses kind of people spent more time and effort on their own lives then pretending to be something they are not, then maybe, just maybe they would be happy and not feel the need to seek attention in such a sick and deceitful way.   ::MonkeyNoNo::

I have some great news I want to celebrate with you guys!

My Mom's house (where my son lives) was robbed in broad daylight Tuesday ( no, that's not the great news ). They broke in with a crowbar and TOTALLY ransacked the house. Among the things missng was some jewelry that was very precious to me and my son. Mom had made a gold nugget pendant for me from Dad's wedding ring, My grandmother's wedding ring, and my great grandmother's wedding ring. After Mom died, I placed it on a heavier chain and gave it to my son. It was stolen along with my son's College ring, Dad's masonic ring, etc.

I made up flyers and put them in all the neighbor's mailboxes hopin someone had seen something, and started combing pawn shops. Today I called jewelers who accepted scrap gold.................... and guess what? Son's college ring, the chain he pendant was on, a cross and Dad's ring had been sold this morning and they still had the articles. The gold nugget wasn't there, BUT the GIRL who brought the stuff in was videotaped, and she had already cashed the check, so the bank should also have her picture. She showed her driver's license ( if not fake ) and so I have high hopes I'll be able to get the pendant back. They also took TV and such, but I'd give it all for that pendant!

There's a week-end flea market tomorrow and I'll be there, too! I never thought I'd see any of it again, and I'm so grateful there's a chance, I think a good chance, I'll be able to restore the faith Mom gave me when she gave it to me, and my son has felt so bad over it. Keep your fngers crossed and maybe say a little prayer?  Thanks, Monkeys!

I agree, they are looking for power and attention.  How powerful are they really?  The power they feel is only a delusion.  A serious problem that will stem from this is people are not going to believe the next person who asks for help.  It would be awful if she eventually wanted to have a child and had a baby with a problem.  Karma is a bitch and life has a way of turning the tables on you.

Once she found out how invested people were in it, she should have come clean.  Liars eventually get found out.  No matter what her character is like in real life, she will always be remembered as a liar and a scammer.  Try putting that on your resume.  Was that 15 minutes of fame worth it?  I think not.

Always 1 - have you heard anything from Dolce?  She hasn't been around for a couple days now and I'm beginning to worry.  Hope everything is OK with her and the twins!  She's probably just adjusting to motherhood but I still worry.

Dolce and babies are fine, she is just trying to match her schedule to theirs and I think they are winning!!!! 

Yesterday, late afternoon, our sons came in to tell us that a mother black bear with cubs was around the area of our driveway.  Our neighbor then called me to say that she'd been in his yard and he counted 5 cubs.  We went through this last year and wondered if it was the same bear.  We've had single bear sightings since March.   Sons went back out to try to get pictures, but the bear & cubs went into the property behind us, but we know they'll be back.

This article just caught me eye due to these occurances.

A 300-pound animal, apparently unhappy that an intruder was on his turf, came charging and didn't stop until Koger raised his .50 caliber muzzleloading rifle and fired from point-blank range. A hunting companion who witnessed the attack from a distance also shot the bruin, which wheeled, ran a short distance and collapsed.

Conservation officers concluded that they fired in self-defense at a bear that had lost its natural fear of humans.

With black bear populations rising, run-ins have become almost commonplace — more than 15,000 in the past year in states east of the Mississippi River according to a survey of state wildlife agencies.

Canadian bear researcher Hank Hristienko, who conducted the survey in January, found that 18 Eastern states were seeing more encounters with bears.

Most encounters involve hungry bears raiding backyard bird feeders or toppling garbage bins, but sometimes they're harrowing. In a 2006 attack, a 210-pound male bear killed a 6-year-old girl and mauled her 2-year-old brother as well as her mother who tried to fend off the animal. The attack occurred during a family outing in Tennessee's Cherokee National Forest.

Some bears have become brazen, dining beneath backyard fruit trees, raiding pet food bowls, even chasing campers. At a park near Prestonsburg, Ky., last year, a bear held tourists at bay inside a cabin until rangers arrived to chase it away.

They have also become road hazards. Wildlife agencies reported more than 1,300 struck by automobiles in 2008.

The U.S. bear population more than doubled between 1989 and 2006, rising from 165,000 to over 350,000, according to The International Association of Bear Research and Management, a bear conservation nonprofit that takes a periodic census of the animals.

Biologists with the same group found nearly 20,000 reported conflicts between bears and humans in 37 states in a 2006 survey of state wildlife agencies.

More recently, in the Eastern region alone, 18 states reported an increase in bear-human conflicts over the past year, Hristienko found in his survey of wildlife agencies.

Tennessee reported the largest increase, up from 300 to 1,000 over the past 10 years. That was followed by New York, which went from 587 to 1,127, and New Jersey, which jumped from 691 encounters to 1,117.

Frank van Manen, a U.S. Geological Survey research ecologist and president of the International Association for Bear Research and Management, said it's not that the bears are becoming more aggressive. Instead, he said, bear populations are skyrocketing under state bans or limits on bear hunting.

"What we have seen throughout the eastern United States is quite a phenomenal range expansion of the black bear," van Manen said. "With the range expansion, the likelihood of the encounters is increasing."

Black bears are the most common bear species in the U.S. with measurable populations in most states. Their larger cousin, the grizzly, is limited to the northwestern states and Alaska. They eat just about anything, including meat, but tend to subsist mostly on insects, nuts, berries, acorns and other vegetation.

Stephanie Boyles, a wildlife scientist for the Humane Society of the United States, said 14 people have been killed in attacks by black bears in North America since 2000, including two in Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee National Forest. Boyles said another 10 people were killed by grizzlies during the period, mostly in Alaska and Canada.

In Kentucky, officials opened a hunting season for bears, a move pushed by the state League of Sportsmen to reinforce the animals' fear of humans.

More than a century ago, bears thrived in Kentucky, but over-hunting and habitat loss led to their disappearance. As the large animals have ventured back from neighboring states, Kentucky residents nowadays find themselves unaccustomed to living among bears.

"You've got bears moving into areas where people live and you've got people moving into areas where bears live," said Mark Ternent, a state bear biologist in Pennsylvania. "Both of those scenarios frequently involve people with little experience living around bears."

Ternent said most of the encounters are harmless, ending with the bears running away.

"The average bear is afraid of people," he said. "If it encounters a person, it would rather flee than fight."

Boyles said people can prevent unwanted bear encounters by doing simple things like putting bird feeders out of reach of the animals, putting trash out only on the day it is to be picked up, and keeping pet food indoors.

Koger, a construction worker, said he has run across lots of bears over the years in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. Most of the time, he said, the bears don't relish the encounters either.

"Usually they want to get away from you as much you want to get away from them," he said.

Hello to everyone.

There have been people in our area who have come home to find a bear had pushed through a sliding door screen or porch to get in.  Don't think for a minute that I have not thought about it.  When I walk out of our home for any reason, especially with our little Boston Terrior, I look around as best I can.

I did have 2 close encounters last year while in the back yard.  Aaaacck.   Today, I waited for my husband to get home to let the dog out!   He laughed & called me chicken.  Dog didn't mind because it was gloomy and she slept.   

We just put our garbage out on the morning it's going to be picked up and my son no longer has his bird feeders up.  It's no use to have anything to draw them....but they make their rounds anyway.   Sadly, we have restaurants & deli's nearby.   There dumptsters always draws them, too.   

(sigh)

Sure, there are many things you can do with a snake.  Maybe when Dolce has more time, she can make BMW a pocketbook...or maybe she will make you some snakeskin boobs boots.

Hi Mere.  Thanks.  I sure hope so but right now I feel really helpless and I cannot feel/have never felt what she is feeling right now and it makes me sad.  We helped our parents through all their sickness, surgeries and bad health problems and now it has passed on down to our generation now.  I stayed at the hospital with her daughter and son last night because I would never want my son to be alone during a time like that.  We are from a large family and there is only her 2 (compared to 11 of us).  We are our parents at this moment in life and my it came around too fast.

Maybe a nice pocketbook for you in Dolce's spare time...

Blue Moon....I know the shift in responsibility.  Made two trips to Louisiana with one day in between...because the next generation needed the "adults".  You know they appreciate what you are
doing.  Without going into too much, I had a swollen brain due to bleeding.  The brain reacts to that pressure.  It took about two months for the swelling to be reduced enough that I did not scare myself all the time...like not knowing where items in the house should go....or weakness in my right arm....or not able to grasp words I needed.  There are two monkeys here who have had the brain swelling episode and we would be happy to talk with you on email if you need to ask questions.  In the meantime, big prayers going your way....Mere

The birth of an endangered camel was an "unexpected" arrival on Merseyside after its mother's long hair concealed the pregnancy for more than a year.

The yet unnamed Bactrian camel calf was born at Knowsley Safari Park in Prescot, weighing about 88lbs.

Staff were surprised by the new arrival after discovering his mother Wendy was pregnant only six weeks ago. A normal gestation period is 15 months.

The picture I posted of the tornado forming above my house was just confirmed by the National Weather Service as touching down just north of my home and damaging lots of property there.  By the time it touched down it had reached wind speeds of 105mph and it traveled on the ground across two counties.  Wow, I guess I will be a little more careful the next time taking pictures during a storm like that.

I can see how children are aggravating at times.  There is a conflict between wanting to be a caring parent, wanting to look like a good parent, what the child wants/needs and what the parent wants/needs.  But I can never understand wanting to hurt a child.  What makes anyone want to hurt someone so little?  so helpless?  so loving?

Well it just hit us in northern MS, bordering Bama & it was wicked for a good bit there, pouring rain, hail, wind bending trees & it was going BOOM BOOM BOOM, so much for a leisure day in the pool!   Be careful monkeys!

Hey Cap, my sister lives in Mississippi too, in Southhaven. She got smacked the other day by a bad storm, a huge tree fell and took out part of the front of the roof!

Yea, here it calmed down a good bit, another wave may hit us later.  I managed to get outside to retrieve my pool float that flew across the yard LOL...now I just have to get thru what the rain does to my achie breakie spine, its like spitting nails level today!   Looks like many areas are getting hit with storms today so you & everyone stay safe as well.   Its a good day to rent a few movies or read a book all curled up in a blankie...Im heading towards that thought myself in a bit  ::MonkeyWink::
