Investigators searching for Tracy girl responding to sealed container (1:50 p.m.)

April 06, 2009 4:50 PM
TRACY - Police officers searching for 8-year-old Sandra Cantu are responding today to the discovery of a sealed container found by farm workers located near Tracy Boulevard north of the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park where she was last seen March 27.

At 1:30 p.m., FBI investigators arrived on the scene, presumably to assist in opening the container. No one is saying whether they think the container holds Cantu.

Tracy Police Sgt. Tony Sheneman said the container was found at around 11:40 a.m. by farm workers in an irrigation pond not far from Bacchetti Road — a pond that searchers had already covered. The workers spotted the container while they were emptying the pond to irrigate a nearby field.

San Joaquin Sheriff’s Department spokesman Les Garcia said the container is considered a suspicious item.

Police have received more than 1,000 tips since the little girl was last seen.

The reward money for information leading to Sandra’s whereabouts is now close to $30,000.

Television aerial images of the area show what appears to be a dark-colored suitcase. The pond is surrounded by cropland and a dairy farm.

The California Highway Patrol also is on the scene. No other information about the size, color or condition of the container has been provided.

Yea Blink, that's more than usually the case...UGH    I know the wait is excruciating & we're all wondering what is taking so long but I think they had info before they made this sighting too.    I just pray that means they will nail the b@st@rd that did this!

Sorry but I am having deep denial.  Can a little girl fit into a suitcase such as this? Do you think they could tell by touching it and that is why the Mobile unit was sent? Couldn't just be a precaution?

No denial here. I do not think she is alive, but her being in this suitcase.....I dunno. There would be an odor. No one speaks of odor? I read nothing of that. I say there are no human remains in there.

TracyG  = Sandra is a tiny little girl and she weighs only 45 pounds. I would think that yes it could be very possible she could fit in a bag like this.  Its not the Bag entirely " itself"

-its why "this Bag" is found where it is ..that's the Issue at hand. Why would anyone dump a suitcase piece of luggage in this remote area.. that is the focus.

I would love to think that but if she was in the water and under water, there may not be much of an odor. And what there is may be masked by the odor of the pond itself - those types of ponds do smell.

It's a horrible thing to be thinking about, but I do think a child could fit in there.  So sad to imagine. Also I wonder if the farm workers took a look before notifying authorities. I probably would open up something just to see what was in there, I'm nosey like that.

I would look to UNLESS i smelled a horrible odor....at that point, knowing Sandra was missing, I would have probably left it alone and called the authorities.

Nut being that its all water surrounding could it be that .. an odor would not be detected. It looks in the photos that the bag was at a time submerged in water ..its looks as though its dried with dirt .. dirt remains dried out on the outside ..from the sun.
I just pray to God this is not Sandra in this bag ..
Yes I want her Found. Not this way.

There may be an odor that is causing this concern or the dogs may have hit on the suitcase.  I don't think they would make such a fuss over it if they had no reason to think it is not more than just a suitcase.

I hope you are right, however.

NUT - if you watch some of the aerial footage, the suitcase or container isn't close to anyone..it's way down in the irrigation canal.  I think it's far enough away that you wouldn't notice an odor.  NOW as soon as they retrieve it out of the canal (which hasn't been done yet) then you would think they'ld have a good idea.
