WILLEMSTAD — Contrary to what the authorities had announced earlier, the nine victims from the fire on board the cargo ship Aegean Wind, were flown home after all. It regarded three Greek and six Philippine crewmembers. They will now be buried in their own country.

After the Greek cargo ship had arrived at Curaçao at the beginning of the week to, amongst others, debark the nine mortal remains, a chartered aircraft had arrived last Thursday. The aircraft had flown back to Europe the same day to fly from Greece to Manila on the Philippine Islands.

There had been a huge explosion near the dining room followed by a fierce blaze on Christmas Day just west of Isla de Margarita on the ship owned by Atlantic Bulk Carriers. Nine crewmembers had died and five had been injured.

The ship was en route from the Brazilian seaport Salvador to Houston, Texas with a bulk cargo of steel.

In 10 years: five MP fired because of drug smuggling

WILLEMSTAD/THE HAGUE — Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin (Justice) states that five co-workers of the Royal Military Police at Schiphol have been fired due to their involvement with drug smuggling since 1999. For that matter, there is no specific registration of drug smuggling cases involving governmental personnel.

Also on behalf of the Minister of Defense, Maxime Verhagen and State Secretary Ank Bijleveld-Schouten (Kingdom Relations), the Minister answered questions from Leerdam and Heerts on involvement of a co-worker from the MP at Schiphol regarding cocaine smuggling from St. Maarten in October and November last year. Two drug routes had been rolled up between the Netherlands and the Antilles at the time. According to Hirsch Ballin, “there is a question of unrelated incidents”.

The Chamber-members ask whether the Minister is prepared to take actions to guarantee a more strict supervision. Hirsch Ballin states that the number of incidents is considered too meager, but that these have nevertheless lead to re-consideration of procedures and measures already implemented. “Monitoring the procedures is a continual process.”

Hirsch Ballin did not wish to elaborate on the question how many drugs had been smuggled from the Netherlands Antilles with the help of the MP co-workers at Schiphol in question. “No comments can be made on this matter as the criminal investigation has not been finalized yet and the case has not been handled by the judge yet.”

The Minister could not give an estimation of the number of drug routes between the Netherlands and the Antilles. “In view of the secrecy obviously involved with drug smuggling, it is not possible to give an overall picture of the number of drug routes between the Netherlands and the Antilles. The quantity of drugs smuggled into the Netherlands from the Antilles is not known either.”

Dutch again summon Venezuela ambassador on comments
By Ben Berkowitz Ben Berkowitz 26 mins ago
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen on Friday denied fresh accusations by the Venezuelan government that the Netherlands is supporting U.S. spy flights over Venezuelan territory.

Verhagen condemned the comments as "inaccurate, unjust and really out of place" in a statement on Friday and said he would summon Venezuela's ambassador again to explain the remarks.

Twice in the past two weeks, the government of President Hugo Chavez has publicly claimed that the Dutch have let the U.S. military launch spy flights from bases on the territories of Aruba and Curacao under the guise of drug surveillance missions.

On December 17 Chavez said the Netherlands was planning "aggression" against Venezuela in concert with the United States, and on Thursday his government again charged the Dutch with "complicity" in such plans.

Verhagen said the Netherlands had made clear to the Venezuelan government that the civilian airports in the Dutch islands have been made available to the United States solely for unarmed drug surveillance missions.

The United States has for years had a military presence on Curacao and Aruba, with about 250 Air Force crew and ground staff involved in counter-narcotics and surveillance operations over the Caribbean region.

In its statement on Thursday, the Venezuelan government questioned whether that was their true purpose.

"The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela doubts the installations that the Netherlands government has put at the disposition of U.S. military contingents are used in the fight against drugs," it said.

The Foreign Ministry, which summoned the Venezuelan ambassador last month, said on Friday it wanted to see the ambassador again "quickly" to clarify the new comments.

The alleged threat of U.S. intervention in the oil-producing South American nation has become a central element of Chavez's discourse and a rallying cry for his supporters.

While he is Latin America's loudest U.S. critic, foes say Chavez is hyping the idea of a foreign threat to distract Venezuelans from pressing domestic problems such as economic recession, rampant crime and inadequate public services.

Verhagen: Venezuela false allegation

DEN HAAG - "New allegations of Venezuela, Curacao and Aruba by the United States used to attack the country to prepare, are incorrect, unfounded and really out of place." Says Minister Maxime Verhagen (Foreign Affairs) .

He wants the Venezuelan ambassador in the Netherlands next week again will give a full explanation on the statements of President Chávez.

Chávez on Thursday again claimed that the Netherlands by American spy planes allows Hato and from the airport Reina Beatrix. "The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela doubts that plants that the Dutch government has made available to the U.S. military used in the fight against drugs", it said in its statement. The Venezuelan ambassador also noted the last time that the Americans are only concerned with combating drug trafficking.

In his statement, however, Chavez stressed again that the United States to use the Netherlands Antilles to Venezuela for an attack to prepare. Verhagen dismissed the allegations of Chávez yesterday of the hand. "The allegations are false and unsubstantiated. Netherlands let its territory be used for aggression and seeks good relations with Venezuela after, "Verhagen said. He wants quick clarification on the words of Chávez.

A spokesman for a U.S. Army division in Miami, Stephen Lucas, the U.S. military denies violating Venezuelan airspace and other motifs are present in Aruba and Curaçao. "It is unfortunate that the Venezuelan government has chosen to cooperate in the anti-drug measures to reduce the threat because of the smuggling is for all nations in the region," he said. "Our operations on the islands of Curacao and Aruba are therefore only focus on drugs and have absolutely nothing to do with politics in Venezuela."

At the climate summit in Copenhagen last December, Chavez said in a speech to leftist organizations that the United States with the consent of Aruba and Curacao Netherlands 'to the teeth' arm.

The leftist president, U.S. troops in preparation for a possible invasion of Venezuela intelligence officers, war ships and spy planes transferred to Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire.

Chávez claimed that the three islands in the territorial waters of Venezuela lie.

Chavez appealed to the European Union to help prevent an armed conflict. He said that the Netherlands is a member of the European Union and that he therefore wants to know how Brussels think about the issue.

Verhagen: Accusation Venezuela incorrect

THE HAGUE — “The new accusations from Venezuela that Curaçao and Aruba are being used by the United States to prepare an attack on the country, are incorrect, groundless and totally unfounded”. Minister Maxime Verhagen (Foreign Affairs) states the aforementioned.

He wants the Venezuelan ambassador in the Netherlands to give chapter and verse on the statements of president Chávez once again during the course of next week. Chávez had repeated his accusation last Thursday that the Netherlands had enabled espionage flights by the United States from the Hato and Reina Beatrix airports. His statement mentioned that, “the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela doubts that the installations provided by the Dutch government to the American army could be used in drug combating”. The Venezuelan ambassador had already been informed the last time that the Americans had only dealt with combating drug smuggling.

However, in his statement, Chávez underlined once again that the United States are using the Netherlands Antilles to prepare an attack on Venezuela. Verhagen had strongly refuted the accusations from Chávez yesterday. “The accusations are incorrect and groundless. The Netherlands does not allow its territory to be used for aggression and strives for good relations with Venezuela” according to Verhagen. He requests prompt clarity on the words spoken by Chávez.

A spokesperson from an American army detachment in Miami, Stephen Lucas, also denies that American soldiers had violated the Venezuelan airspace and were present on Aruba and Curaçao for other motives. “It is regrettable that the Venezuelan government has chosen to reduce their cooperation in the anti-drug actions as the smuggling threat applies for all nations in the region”, he said. “Our operations on the islands Curaçao and Aruba are therefore only targeted towards drugs and have absolutely nothing to do with politics in Venezuela.”

In a speech for left-winged organizations during the climate summit in Copenhagen last December, Chávez stated that the United States were arming Aruba and Curaçao ‘to the teeth’ with the approval of the Netherlands.

According to the socialist President, the American soldiers had transported intelligence officers, warships and espionage aircrafts to Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire in preparation for a possible invasion of Venezuela.

Chávez had stated that the three islands were located in the territorial waters of Venezuela.

Chávez had called on the European Union to help prevent an armed conflict. He stated that the Netherlands is a member of the European Union and that’s why he would appreciate to know Brussels’ point of view on the matter.

Dramatic call from Dindial: ‘This country must not be lost’

2 Jan, 2010, 07:37 (GMT -04:00)

WILLEMSTAD — “Believe me: this country will not be lost. This country must not be lost either.” In her New Year’s speech, Lieutenant Governor Lisa Dindial dramatically calls on the citizens to keep Curaçao livable. “For a change, I will not address you today in my capacity as Lieutenant Governor, but as local head of the police,” says Dindial.

“I could have used many nice words in this speech, wishing everyone a prosperous 2010. However, these nice words would evaporate into thin air just like all other nice words, which you have already heard these days. Nice words are of no avail. We have reached the stage where we, as community, should realize that we cannot continue like this. We should realize that there will be others who will handle our affairs, if we cannot manage them ourselves.”

Domestic violence
In her New Year’s speech, the Lieutenant Governor focused the attention on the large number of domestic violence cases, which the police have to solve on a daily basis. “Couples who assault each other, fathers and mothers who fight, fathers who assault children, children who assault their mother, brothers and sisters who fight, neighbors’ quarrels”, she recites the problems. “Just imagine: calling the police in order to sort things out again in your home.”
The Lieutenant Governor cites an incident that was heard on the police radio during Christmas: “Rude, ill-bred children threaten to set fire to their parents’ house.” Unfortunately, this was not the only time the police had to answer domestic violence calls during Christmas. “The police had received thousands of telephone calls regarding domestic violence during the course of last year. They receive hundreds of such calls per month, dozens per day.” According to the Lieutenant Governor, there are days, when the police are only dealing with cases related to domestic violence.

What’s this?
Dindial indicates that, not only do the police not have any time for other cases the frequency also indicates which problems our society is coping with. “As a society, preparing for the country Curaçao,” Dindial asks everyone this question: ‘What is this?’ ‘Kiko esaki ta’ – in the text, written with capital letters. “We must realize that our island must be ready, before Curaçao becomes a country. In view of the many problems in our society, there is not doubt about the lack of putting one’s affairs in order, and it is not only the lack of such at home, that forms a problem. There is also a lack of setting things right on the streets, at school, on the shop floor. An entire country is actually without order, if one’s affairs are not in order in any of these areas.”

Dindial draws the citizen’s attention to its own responsibility. “It’s easy to say that the government should bring order, the police should put their affairs in order, and the Lieutenant Governor is responsible for such, but where do you stand as citizen? Are you behaving correctly, are you doing something to come up with a society without crime? Do you live according to the rules? What are you doing to build your country?”

ORANGE CITY - In his New Year speech, Governor Fredis Refunjol attention to the environment, youth and the economic situation. About the latter he says that Aruba in 2010 "serious" should consider a future without refinery.

In the speech, the governor compared with its garden and the process of planting and care.

The garden, which sixty years ago by his parents is formed, has great value, he says, and makes him realize that while an area of responsibility to take good care of the trees and plants, animals and the environment. "I therefore call on citizens in the new year as responsible to deal with the piece on Aruba where you live. Do this for your children and theirs. Because Aruba is not only you, but it is also home to many future generations. "On the youth says Refunjol mainly concerned about the large amount of early school leavers. "The impact of these dropouts, young people without supervision and without social inclusion, will be visible in the long term. Often when it is too late. "The governor argues for a robust social structures and led to good people as 'roots' to build and develop spirit can be.

The oil refinery in San Nicolas compares the governor in his New Year speech with manure. "Too much manure acts like poison." The refinery is for him a long time great help to the economy. "Many say that over all these years in refining our garden has caused significant damage to our environment. It seems inevitable that in 2010 we should seriously consider a possible future without refinery. "

Crisis
The governor also has it in his speech about the 'difficult' times had. As plants can not be given too much water in dry times, because they are therefore less defensible, so must the people not to depend on the government to prepare, so Refunjol. "We should not too quickly call on the government so that the valve move. In difficult times, we own up to our best. In this way we lay the foundation for future growth. "

Refunjol took the change of government. He compares it to the gardener who supports him.

"Every gardener has his opinion and his priorities, but always with heart and love for the garden". Similarly, every judge and government priorities, the governor said, "is not always bad or less good". Refunjol also calls attention to agriculture and to get a young Aruban businessman who started his land kasbouw. Finally warned the governor to the road users especially with drink to drive. "Aruba has already lost far too many children because of unsafe traffic."

Positive
Also premier Mike Eman (AVP) has been on the radio speech. He thanked the police who in other 'difficult' days has become stricter with the work that has occurred to preserve the security. Despite the difficult economic times, said Eman yet hope for the future. All example he mentioned the tax cuts which give people more purchasing power to obtain. The investment in alternative energy, which will drop even more next year, citizens must ultimately be felt in their wallets. The Prime Minister also welcomed the new relationship with the Netherlands, which he already has positive effects. As an example, KLM Eman returning next year.

2010: think about future without refinery’

ORANJESTAD — In his New Year’s speech, Governor Fredis Refunjol requested attention for the environment, the youth and the economical situation. Regarding the latter, he states that Aruba should ‘seriously’ start considering in 2010 on a future without refinery.

In his speech, the Governor draws a comparison with his garden and the process of planting and care. The garden, which had been laid out by his parents sixty years ago, has much value he says, and simultaneously makes him realize that it is also a responsible field to continue to care for the trees and plants, animals and the environment. “I therefore call on citizens to also be responsible for the small piece of Aruba on which they live, and to do so for their children and theirs, because Aruba does not only belong to you, but it will also be the home base of many future generations.” Regarding the youth, Refunjol states that he is especially concerned about the considerable number of premature school dropouts. “The consequences of these dropouts, youngsters without counseling and without social integration, will become visible in the long-term, and often when it is already too late.” Therefore, the Governor pleads for sturdy social structures and a well-educated population as ‘roots’ to count on and being efficient.

In his New Year’s speech, the Governor compares the oil-refinery in San Nicolas with manure. “Too much manure works as poison.” According to him, the refinery has been a substantial economical support for a long time. “Many state that the refinery has inflicted substantial damage to the environment on our island during all those years. It therefore appears inevitable that in 2010, we must seriously consider a possible future without refinery.”

Crisis
In his speech, the Governor also talked about the ‘difficult’ times. For example, just as plants should not be watered too much during the dry season, as they would otherwise become less resistant, thus the population should not become too dependent on the government, according to Refunjol. “We should not call on the government too quickly so that they will turn on the tap. We should personally do our utmost in difficult times, and in that way we will lay the foundation for future growth.”

Refunjol also quoted the changeover in government. He compared such with the gardener who supports him.

“Each gardener has his own opinion and his priorities, but always with a hart and love for the garden”. In this, each government also has its opinions and its priorities, according to the Governor, ‘which is not always bad or inferior’. Refunjol also asked attention for agriculture and cited a young Aruban entrepreneur who had started with hothouse planting on his terrain. On conclusion, the Governor warned the road users not to drive especially after having consumed alcohol. “Aruba has already lost much too many children due to unsafe traffic.”

Positive
Premier Mike Eman (AVP) had also held his speech on the radio. Amongst others, he thanked the police who are having a ‘difficult’ time these days with the stricter performance for the sake of security. In spite of the difficult economical times, Eman still expressed his hope for the future. As example, he mentioned the burden relief enabling more buying power for the population. Eventually, the citizens will also notice the difference regarding the investment in alternative energy, which will be followed-up next year. The Premier is also pleased with the new relationship with the Netherlands, which will have positive results, according to him. As an example, Eman cites the return of the KLM next year.

This little girl was seriously injured when a firework of some type blew up in her hand(s).  I thought it had just damaged one hand but from the photos I'm not sure, it may have been both.
Mike Eman and his wife visited her and her family, and brought her a gift, I think it may have been a doll.  There are pictures of Mike Eman hugging both of her parents also.

I stand with the girl, Natalee Holloway.

"I can look back over the past 10 years and there were no steps wasted, and there are no regrets,'' she said. "I did all I knew to do and I think that gives me greater peace now." "I've lived every parent's worst nightmare and I'm the parent that nobody wants to be," she said.

Well, let's knock that cough out!  If you're still coughing after the Jack Daniels, you probably won't notice...

If that doesn't work....
