Volunteers replace vandalized Spierer posters
Updated: Nov 05, 2011 10:24 PM CDT
By Richard Essex - bio
BLOOMINGTON - Volunteers spent Saturday replacing posters of a missing Indiana University student that had been torn down.
Thousands of people have helped with the search for Lauren Spierer, putting up posters and searching nearly every inch of Bloomington. Recently, an anonymous letter was sent to Spierer's parents, criticizing the poster of their daughter as littering up the town.
"It is kind of hard to understand how a person could tear down posters of a missing person when, you know, this person has a family that is searching for them. How can you be heartless enough to tear down those posters?" said volunteer Joe Bailey.
During the past five months, thousands of posters with Spierer's picture, detailed information on where she was last seen and a police phone number have been placed all over Bloomington. Recently, hundreds of the posters have been taken down, followed by the letter to the missing IU junior's parents, critical of the search effort and the posters.

Friends of Lauren Spierer reflect, take action
By Erica Petri
Last week marked five months since Indiana University fashion student Lauren Spierer disappeared. The petite 20-year-old was last seen walking home from a friend’s apartment at around 4 a.m. on June 3. Despite search parties, extensive media coverage, and the Bloomington Police Department’s ongoing investigation, Spierer’s whereabouts and the exact events that took place that night remain a mystery.
Since her disappearance, fall classes are in full swing, IU students have returned to campus and continue to go out and have a good time with their friends.
But Spierer’s absence has not gone unnoticed.
“Being in Indiana without Lauren is surreal,” Amara Brenner, one of Spierer’s closest friends at school said. “I see her missing poster everywhere I go. She is everywhere, but nowhere. I look at pictures of her and my heart melts.”
Spierer’s group of friends struggle to wrap their heads around her disappearance every day. They serve as a support system for one another and constantly remind each other to stay positive.
“My friends and I try to stay strong and not get too emotional,” Brenner said. “Stories are shared about times we had with Lauren like she still is with us, but just not here, but somewhere and safe.”
Most importantly, Spierer’s friends are hyper-aware of the dangers they face when going out. They have taken measures to ensure that they all stay safe.

Search continues for IU student Lauren Spierer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Five months after IU student Lauren Spierer vanished, police still have no clue what happened to her, but the school is taking action to keep other students safe.
It was news that shocked Indiana University's campus. One of their own was missing, vanished without a trace.
For weeks, Bloomington Police held daily press conferences, giving what little updates were available, while Lauren Spierer's parents pleaded for anyone with information to come forward.
Friends, family, and complete strangers searched miles of thick forest in the dead heat of summer.
Now, the seasons have changed. Trees on the square are strung with lights for the holidays. The leaves have turned and fallen, and students are back on campus.
The pulse of the city hasn't stopped. Life has moved on, but Lauren's story is at a standstill.
Every corner you turn, you see her face. A silent statement of support in store windows and a larger message on campus. Light posts are covered, some tattered and torn.
Since she disappeared June third, there have been no major leads in the case, and no suspects. Police stopped the press conferences, and refused to talk to us about where the case stood later in the summer. Months later, the Bloomington Police Department still won't answer our questions on camera, only releasing to us a statement.
"We appreciate your continued interest in the story and recognize the value the media can play in our efforts. That being said, we have nothing new to report and continue to work on the case."

Lauren Spierer's parents have a new ally in their desperate crusade to find their missing daughter.

Bloomington, Ind.
Lauren Spierer's parents have a new ally in their desperate crusade to find their missing daughter.
After operating illegally in the Hoosier state this past September, the New York City private investigative Firm Beau Deitl & Associates can now get to work.
::snipping2::
"All I'm interested in is trying to help the Spierer family find their little girl, and that's all we want to do," Said Dietl, reached by phone.
But the team of prominent private investigators from New York got off on a bad foot here in Indiana. Dietl didn't make friends quickly after he appeared on a local New York Fox News program, calling Bloomington's chief of police "Gomer Pyle."
His firm could've faced criminal charges, after coming to Indiana without a private investigative license from the state to investigateleads in what happened to Lauren Spierer.
Thursday, Bo Dietl, the former New York police officer turned investigator, did not appear before the state licensing board, but his CEO John Timoney and former deputy police commissioner of NYC did. So did Lauren's parents.
Charlene sobbed throughout the hearing and according to Fox59, Timothey was ethical and personally apologized profusely for Dietl's behavior.
The board decided to give the firm a probationary license, which means they will be able to operate in Indiana for one year and must re-apply based on their behavior.

Sending thoughts and prayers to Lauren's family as we begin the holiday season.
It is so sad that there has been no movement in this case. I feel like the answers are right there with those boys she was with that night. Has it ever been said who was polyd

Lauren's parents don't believe the stories that Jay and Corey told about the night that she disappeared. Jay took a private poly and Corey has not taken one.

::snipping2::
The letter from the family, as seen on FindLauren.com, follows:
“As Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, it's difficult to believe we are still without Lauren. Somehow Lauren's disappearance has touched the lives of so many people who continue to support our family as our efforts to find Lauren continue. Not a minute passes that we are not missing Lauren, her smile, her voice, her presence. We continue to hope for her safe return. This Thanksgiving, we are thankful to those of you who have kept Lauren in your thoughts, prayers and hearts. Let today be the day we get answers and find Lauren.
Love you, Lauren. Just as determined, just as strong, just as committed to find you.
Rob, Charlene and Rebecca Spierer”

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WTHI) - December 3, 2011 will mark six months since Lauren Spierer was reported missing and the Bloomington Police Department released the following statement updating their search for Lauren on Thursday:
The Bloomington Police Department continues to actively investigate the disappearance of Lauren Spierer which occurred six months ago on June 3, 2011. The Department continues to receive tips from the public and from other law enforcement agencies with information about what they have heard or with names of individuals that should be considered as possibly being involved. Those tips are followed up by a team of investigators who have been assigned to the case since the beginning and Lauren’s case continues to be the priority assignment for them.
Despite the time that has passed since this investigation began, much has been done and much continues to be done on this case. The Bloomington Police Department remains as committed to this investigation as we were on June 3rd and our vigorous efforts will continue as we seek to provide answers to Lauren’s family and the Bloomington community.

Vigil planned for 6-month anniversary of IU student's disappearance

Westchester (N.Y.) Journal News
For Cathy Garger, it was the recent death of her 17-year-old daughter that drew her to the case of a missing female Indiana University student.
For Shelly Leonard, it was the missing woman's striking physical resemblance to her own 16-year-old daughter.
Two mothers, from different parts of the country, were both drawn to the case of Lauren Spierer, who will have been missing six months on Saturday. The 20-year-old from Greenburgh, N.Y., disappeared early June 3 after a night of partying.
Garger and Leonard are traveling to Bloomington, Ind., to participate in anniversary events they helped plan, for a young woman they didn't even know before her disappearance made national headlines in June.
::snipping2::
Charlene and Robert Spierer, the missing student's parents, will both be there, having flown to Indiana on Tuesday after spending Thanksgiving in their hometown in Westchester County, N.Y.
"We never expected to still be searching for Lauren, six months after her disappearance," the parents and their older daughter, Rebecca, said today in a statement. "In some ways, June 3rd seems like yesterday and in others, it seems like a lifetime ago. It's inconceivable that someone, this very minute, knows what happened to Lauren and knows exactly where she is. Rest assured, we will never give up our search."
::snipping2::
Leonard helped organize the latest event in Bloomington, called Support the Spierers, which will mark 183 days since the disappearance, starting at 7 p.m. Saturday with a vigil at Spierer's apartment building, called Smallwood. It will feature readings, songs and poems devoted to Lauren.
Participants will then walk to Fountain Square Mall, where a prayer and support tree is being set up in Lauren's honor. Hand-written holiday cards for the Spierers will be hung on the tree, which will be topped with a star of David.

Lauren Spierer's Father Speaks on Anniversary of Disappearance
By Alex Brown (
alex@wibc.com
)
12/2/2011
Robert Spierer is speaking on the day before the six month anniversary of the disappearance of his daughter Lauren.
Spierer says six months after Lauren disappeared, he and his wife are still working hard to find their daughter. He says searches are still being conducted, although they're on smaller scale than the searches in June and July.
::snipping2::
Spierer says he and his family are overwhelmed by all the support they've received.
"Probably more important is the emotional support that we've gotten from friends, family, from this community here, both the city of Bloomington and people at Indiana University. There has just been an incredible outpouring of emotional support," Spierer says.
Spierer made another plea to those responsible for Lauren's disappearance. He says the emotional torture that his family is going through needs to stop.

It's heartbreaking to read that Charlene is begging for someone to help them find Lauren.
It has been 6 months since Lauren disappeared. Why, oh why, doesn't someone call in an anonymous tip? What's wrong with them?

IU student who was with Spierer before disappearance settles unrelated alcohol case

An Indiana University student and friend of Lauren Spierer’s who was with the missing 20-year-old the night she disappeared in June showed up in court Thursday morning to settle an illegal drinking case against him.
Corey E. Rossman
, 21, a junior from Massachusetts studying real estate finance at the Kelley School of Business, pleaded guilty to illegal consumption of alcohol. He qualified for a pre-trial diversion program that allowed him to pay $400 and complete alcohol education classes in exchange for the conviction’s dismissal in a year.
All he had to pay Thursday was an additional $6 in court costs and a $1 fine, according to court records.
Rossman was arrested last December after police found him intoxicated at 3:14 a.m. at the corner of Eighth Street and College Avenue.
He has taken advantage of Monroe County’s pre-trial diversion program twice before
— after an October 2010 arrest for illegal consumption of alcohol and following a 2008 incident in which he was charged with possession of marijuana when he was living on campus at Briscoe Quad.

Lauren Spierer’s Friends Organize Self Defense Class, Fundraiser For Search Efforts
December 11, 2011 11:58 PM
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Six months ago, Indiana University student and Westchester native Lauren Spierer went missing. Her friends spent Sunday raising money to help in the search and learning how to prevent what may have happened to Lauren from happening to them.
“We just really know that someone knows something, and we just want to find that out,” said Dana Krause, friend of Spierer.
Wearing blue for Lauren, the group learned how to fight back at a self-defense class they organized at New York University.
::snipping2::
The instructor told the girls to remember three things should they ever need to fight back: get angry, scream and strike.
“Take over the situation, try to get mad and not scared,” said instructor Gabrielle Rubin of Female Awareness Self Defense. “Use anything we have that’s free to get the attacker off of us.”
Police say they’ve received more than 2,400 tips in Spierer’s case.

Spierers Doubt Man's Account Of Night Daughter Last Seen
Family Returns To New York As Search Wanes
POSTED: 7:53 am EST December 13, 2011
UPDATED: 8:05 am EST December 13, 2011
WESTCHESTER, N.Y. -- The family of Lauren Spierer, an Indiana University student missing since June 3, is back in their New York home, but they are turning up the heat on those who were last seen with their daughter.
::snipping2::
Much of the Spierers' ire is focused on Corey Rossman, who witnesses said Lauren spent a lot of time with that night.
"Some of the people have refused to speak to us. Corey Rossman … absolutely refuses to talk to us, and that's terribly frustrating," Spierer said.
Investigators said Spierer and Rossman were together at Kilroy's, a local bar, before her disappearance. Witnesses told police that Spierer was highly intoxicated and left her phone and shoes at the bar before stumbling out with Rossman.
Through his attorney, Rossman claimed he was assaulted and has no memory of what happened that evening.
"I have serious doubts about that. Perhaps if we had a chance to talk to him directly, we could get some more clarity on that issue," Spierer said. "To me, it sounds like an extremely convenient position to take."
Bloomington police searched Rossman's apartment and vehicle, but they didn't find any link to Lauren.
Spierer was also with Rossman's neighbor, Jay Rosenbaum, who police said watched her leave about 4:30 a.m., the last time she was seen.
Rosenbaum met with the family, with his attorney by his side, but the Spierers said there was little useful information.
"We were not able to get any additional information as a result of that meeting, unfortunately," Spierer said.
Spierer's boyfriend, Jesse Wolff, was not with her that night, officials said. The Spierers don't think he has any information he hasn't already shared, though he is one of several people of interest.
"I think he shared what he knows," Spierer said.

MYFOXNY.COM - The parents of a missing Indiana University student from Westchester are breaking their silence. Lauren Spierer's parents have come forward to speak out about their missing daughter.
Heather Brown with Fox 5 News spoke to them.
They say it's still as difficult as it was in those first few days since her disappearance with no clues.
The talked about how they think the Bloomington Police Department is handling the case, why they thought it was a good idea to bring in their own investigator and their frustration with the young men who were the last to see Lauren, including one who has refused to speak with police.
