Just became aware of this case today.

I have a lot of catching up to do.

I was asked to make this, so I am posting it now.
Thank you, Brandi.
This is very comforting.
You are so kind.

A former neighbor of the Bakers told "Good Morning America" described the stepmother as in cold terms. Kayla Rotenberry, who lived next to the Bakers for about a year in Sawmills, N.C., said that Elisa Baker would force Zahra to walk long distances on her prosthetic leg, threatening punishment if she slowed down.

As for Zahra, Rotenberry said she "was the best youngin' you could ever ask for."

Oh my...how sad for her.

She is such a beautiful child. Praying she is found and safe!

I just don't understand how anyone can harm a child...or animal for that matter.

Wow! Just heard of this one.

Lots of similarities with other cases still open.

This one seems like an in-house deal too.

Sad

Thanks, only two comments that I can actually say on here, the rest I will keep private. I think once you get past a certain age the goth thing really needs to go, and not only that, it is so yesterday. And crazy son in law, well that was pegged correctly IMO

(with video)

HICKORY, NC – A 10-year-old girl from Hickory has been missing for nearly two days. Police say the statements from her dad and stepmother are “inconsistent,” and that Zahra Baker was most likely abducted by someone she knows.

Zahra’s parents told police she was last seen sleeping in her room at their home on 21st Avenue NW at around 2:30 Saturday morning. They reported her missing Saturday at around 2 that afternoon. An Amber Alert was issued shortly after that.

On Sunday, officers went door to door in the neighborhood where Zahra disappeared, and concerned residents were on the lookout for the little girl. Zahra is around 5 feet tall, and she weighs 85lbs. She has brown hair and blue eyes. She also has a prosthetic leg below the knee on her left leg, and she has a hearing impairment.

Police have not named any suspects in the disappearance of Zahra Baker, but they say her stepmother, Elisa Baker, is a person of interest. During the search of the home, police arrested Elisa Baker on unrelated charges including writing bad checks.

If you have any information about Zahra Baker’s whereabouts call the Hickory Police Department at 828-328-5551 or dial 911.

You would sure think your mood would be something other than annoyed when your child is missing.  It appears that Elesa had brain cancer, and it also appears from what she is writing that she is ill. And she has four kids.

Zahra Baker Missing: 10-Year-Old Hearing Impaired N.C. Child Gone, Stepmother Arrested on Unrelated Charges

HICKORY, N.C. (CBS/AP) New leads in the case of missing 10-year-old girl, Zahra Baker, indicate it is unlikely the hearing impaired child was abducted by a stranger, police said Sunday, and her father says "it could be possible" that his wife was involved.

Zahra's stepmother, Elisa Baker, who is reportedly the last person to see Zahra, was arrested early Sunday on "unrelated charges."

Zahra, who has a prosthetic leg and was previously treated for bone cancer, was reported missing by her father, Adam Baker, Saturday afternoon, just a few  hours after a brush fire was reported in family's backyard. Adam Baker said his wife told him she last saw Zahra asleep in her bed around 2:30 a.m. The blaze was reported around 5 a.m., and Adam Baker said he was in such a state of panic after the fire that he didn't check on his daughter, until hours later.

"Although nothing is being ruled out at this point, there have been details that have surfaced in the past 12 hours indicating that a stranger abduction is less likely than once anticipated," Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins told reporters during a press conference Monday.

Adkins said that Zahra needed hearing aids in both ears - the hearing aids were left at the scene, leading investigators to doubt she ran away.

Tolerance, the other girl may be her bio daughter that lives with her father.  Maybe that's her child.

Being in a panic about a brush fire, and you don't immediately check on your child?

This smells very bad to me.
