No mad cow disease (BSE), but one case of the Creuzfeldt-Jacob disease

No mad cow disease (BSE) in Aruba, but one case of the Creuzfeldt-Jacob disease, said the management of the Horacio Oduber Hospital in an emergency press conference last Sunday.

ORANJESTAD – The Horacio Oduber Hospital held an emergency press conference as a result of rumours about a patient that was admitted in the hospital and infected with BSE, or mad cow disease.  According to the hospital, the woman has the Creuzfeldt-Jacob disease, which is indeed related to BSE.

The patient was admitted in the hospital last month and the personnel noticed symptoms of the Creuzfeldt-Jacob disease on her.  Since Aruba does not have the necessary material and expertise to diagnose such illnesses, they sent specimen to the Academic Medial Center in the Netherlands .  When the results indicated that the patient has indeed the Creuzfeldt-Jacob disease, the hospital started to sterilize everything possible.  Spokesperson Bob Harms says that out of precaution, some things will even be thrown away.

The disease is contagious.  People in other countries died in surgery after the same instruments were used on a patient with the Creuzfeldt-Jacob disease during operation.

They do not know yet whether other people in the hospital were infected.  The hospital held a press conference this afternoon, but this paper didn’t get any information on this before it went to press.

There are three ways to get the Creuzfeldt-Jacob disease; spontaneously, by inheritor, or by medical treatments.  Over 80 percent of the cases are spontaneous, also called sporadic cases.  The hospital says that from analysis it appears that the woman contracted the disease spontaneously.  The disease doesn’t show itself at first.  The symptoms, headache, tiredness or depression do not immediately point at Creuzfeldt-Jacob disease.  Once the patient starts getting disturbance of equilibrium, tingling in the limbs and amnesia, it goes downhill real fast.  The average period of sickness is four months and after two years, part of the disease will still remain in the body.  Especially people in the age of 50 to 70 get this disease.

BSE (boviene spongiforme encefalopathie) or the mad cow disease was considered a variety of the Creuzfeldt-Jacob disease in the nineties.  Based on the symptoms it was finally defined as a separate disease.  Even though it was not proved, people that get this disease have probably eaten infected beef products.
