DELPHI, Ind. (WTHR) - Police confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the two bodies found outside Delphi on Tuesday are the two missing 13-year-old girls.

Liberty German and Abigail Williams' disappeared Monday while hiking along the wooded trails outside Delphi. One of the hundreds of volunteers searching for the friends discovered their bodies in a remote area about 50 feet from the banks of Deer Creek. They were about three-quarters of a mile from an abandoned railroad bridge where the girls were dropped off Monday to go hiking.

Police seek help identifying person seen on Delphi trail
PUBLISHED: 02/15/17 07:12 PM EST.UPDATED: ABOUT AN HOUR AGO.
DELPHI, Ind. (WTHR) - Police in Carroll County are seeking help from the public in identifying a man seen walking on a trail where two teenagers were murdered.

State police released a photograph of the man, who was on the Delphi Historic Trails on Monday afternoon. Abigail Williams and Liberty German were last seen on the trail around 1 p.m.

While police aren't calling him a person of interest, he is someone investigators want to talk to because he was on the same trail as the murdered teenagers at the same time.

We saw detectives working Wednesday along country roads near the historic bridge and trail.

Man photographed on trail now officially a suspect in murders of Delphi teens
Posted 12:36 PM, February 19, 2017, by FOX59 Web, Updated at 05:19PM, February 19, 2017

DELPHI, Ind. — Indiana State Police say a man photographed on the trail where two murdered Delphi teens were last seen is now considered “the main suspect” in their killings.

The man previously had been considered a person authorities wanted to speak to in the investigation of the killings of 14-year-old Liberty German and 13-year-old Abigail Williams.

State police said Sunday that preliminary evidence led authorities to the conclusion that he’s a suspect.

“During the course of the investigation, preliminary evidence has led investigators to believe the person, in the distributed photo, is suspected of having participated in the murders of Abigail Williams and Liberty German,” said Indiana State Police in a press release.

Delphi, Indiana: A look at the property where the bodies of two missing teen girls were found
Katie Cox

Ron Logan has owned that piece of land for 53 years and said that the discovery of the girls’ bodies on his property is something he still hasn’t been able to come to terms with.

“To have something like this in your own house, your own home - I just can’t get my mind around it yet, it’s really difficult,” said Logan. “I can’t comprehend it.”

Logan said that with the steep embankments and rough terrain on the back end of his property, it would be difficult to even make it to the location, let alone carry two bodies down and drop them off.

“For them to get from there to all the way here with that rough territory they had to walk, you couldn’t carry them in a million years or drag them or drop them off,” said Logan. “They had to walk.”

Teens killed: Police look beyond Delphi for suspect
Published 1:40 p.m. ET Feb. 20, 2017 | Updated 21 hours ago

DELPHI, Ind. — Police are not limiting the search for a killer to just Carroll County.

"We're just expanded our search to anybody who saw anything," Indiana State Police Kim Riley said, explaining that at the time it might not have seemed suspicious at the time.

More specifically, police want to know if anyone recalls a hitchhiker along the Hoosier Heartland Highway, a person walking along a county road or highway, Riley said.

"We don't know if the person's a local or a drifter who came in and left," Riley said, as he explained what they were looking for as they look to nearby communities for tips.

"We want to look at any aspect of what somebody might have seen," Riley said, adding that if someone saw a person throwing away a backpack, they'd be interested in tracking that down, too.

McCain said there are no security cameras on the trail. He said a local bank reached out to him about the possibility of paying for cameras. Those plans are still in the early stages.

“I appreciate that very much. Yes, we’ll do that,” McCain said. “It hasn’t happened and it will, maybe, before spring.”

McCain said even before the murders, there were plans in place to install some security cameras using grant money.

McCain said he has no clue where the picture of the suspect came from and police won’t reveal the picture’s source or any other information regarding the photo.

People with tips on the case can call 844-459-5786.

Authorities squash social media investigation rumors; prep for press conference

DELPHI, Ind. (WLFI) — Police are preparing to release more information about the double homicide investigation in Carroll County Wednesday, but Tuesday they put an end to rumors surrounding the investigation that were circulating on social media.

It’s been one week since 13-year-old Abby Williams and 14-year-old Liberty German were found dead near the Delphi Historic Trail, and many residents are desperately wanting answers.

Police say too much information released could hinder their investigation, so detectives are being extremely careful with what details they will make public.

“Just because we haven’t released information to the media doesn’t mean we don’t have more information,” Indiana State Police Sgt. Tony Slocum said.

Police said what you don’t know about this investigation is good for you.

“Some of the facts we don’t release are only known to the person who committed the crime,” he said.

Slocum told News 18 earlier Tuesday the information isn’t so pertinent to the investigation that it can’t wait until Wednesday’s press conference, which will be held at 10 a.m. You can watch a live stream of the event on WLFI.com.

There have also been some inaccurate sketches floating around the internet. Carroll County 911 Dispatch reminded people on its Facebook page that police have only released two suspect photos.

Authorities are still asking for the public’s help identifying the suspect in the photos released by police last week. So far, about 250 tips have been received and many have led to interviews and searches.

UPDATE: Police say photo of suspect in Delphi homicides came from teen’s phone; audio released of man’s voice
Posted 11:16 AM, February 21, 2017, by FOX59 Web, Updated at 02:55PM, February 22, 2017

DELPHI, Ind. – Investigators released an audio clip of the voice of a suspect in the homicides of two Delphi teenagers.

Capt. Dave Bursten with Indiana State Police played the clip during a Wednesday news conference. He said it came from the cell phone of Liberty German, who had the presence of mind to make the recording. Police said the voice is saying, "Down the hill."

During the news conference. Sgt. Tony Slocum said the search continued for a man seen in a photo. Investigators revealed that the photo also came from Liberty German's phone. They said it's possible the voice in the recording is that of the man in the photo. They also acknowledged that it's possible more than one person may be involved

Police said they were withholding some information in the case for investigative purposes.

"We are actively looking for this person. This person is our suspect," Slocum said of the man in the picture.

ISP Superintendent Doug Carter became emotional when he spoke during the news conference.

"Why Libby? Why Abby? Why Delphi? Why Carroll County?" Carter asked struggling to control his emotion. Carter revealed that he'd talked to Gov. Eric Holcomb about the case.

"We're not stopping...someone knows who this individual is," Carter said.

He and other investigators again appealed to the public to continue to send in tips. He believes someone knows the man in the photograph.

"Libby and Abby need you. Please don't rationalize tips away," he said.

Carter maintained that tips are anonymous and urged people to call the tip line at 844-459-5786. Tips can also be emailed to abbyandlibbytip@cacoshrf.com.

Investigators said any information could be useful. If someone has been exhibiting strange behavior in the last week or changed their habits, he said that's noteworthy. Maybe someone suddenly canceled an appointment or has been following the Delphi case much too closely.

He also had a message for the killer.

"If you're watching, we'll find you," Carter said.

Authorities say they have additional video from the cell phone that they’re not yet releasing to the public.

Police said German is “a hero” for having the presence of mind to record video during the incident.

“We are actively looking for this person,” Indiana State Police Sgt. Tony Slocum said Wednesday morning as he referenced the suspect photo. “We believe this person is our suspect.”

A $41,000 reward is being offered for tips that lead to an arrest.

State police strongly urged anyone who recognizes the man to call 1-844-459-5786. A tip can be left anonymously. Tips can also be emailed to abbyandlibbytip@cacoshrf.com. Indiana State Police have also created a website with information regarding the case.

“As poor as this picture is, someone knows [who it is],” ISP Superintendent Doug Carter said.

Investigators receive 3,900 tips in murder of Delphi teens; reward increases to $50,000
Posted 12:57 PM, February 23, 2017, by FOX59 Web, Updated at 04:38PM, February 23, 2017

Of those tips, 1,900 came in after police released an audio recording Wednesday morning of a man saying, “Down the hill.” The recording came from Libby German’s phone, police said, as did a picture of the prime suspect in the case.

Police said the reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect or suspects has swelled to $50,000. The office of U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita made a $9,000 donation to increase the reward from $41,000. Other money comes from the FBI, Indiana Packers Corporation and Lafayette Bank and Trust.

In addition, the FBI has launched a nationwide billboard campaign to generate even more tips. The Bureau’s efforts include 6,000 electronic billboards in 46 states with images of the slain teens and a photo of the suspect.

DNA evidence is top priority in Delphi murder investigation
Posted 10:18 PM, February 23, 2017, by Trevor Shirley, Updated at 10:28PM, February 23, 2017

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- On Thursday, investigators say they had recovered DNA evidence from the Delphi crime scene where two girls, 13-year-old Abby Williams and 14-year-old Libby German, were found murdered.

That evidence now has top priority for processing by investigators. It’s a strong lead, in a case where authorities have been clamoring for any clue about the murderer. But just how important could is this DNA evidence be?

It is now the third piece of evidence investigators have said publicly they have: the grainy suspect photo, that chilling audio of a man’s voice saying “down the hill,” and now some kind of DNA sample.

“We asked for a fast-track as far as that piece information,” said Carroll County Sheriff Tobe Leazenby. "So I can’t go into specifics because of the ongoing [investigation].”

Sheriff clarifies reports of DNA evidence
Published 11:37 a.m. ET Feb. 24, 2017 | Updated 24 minutes ago

DELPHI, Ind. — Carroll County Sheriff Tobe Leazenby offered clarification Friday about a Fox59 report claiming the department has DNA evidence in the recent double homicide of Abby Williams and Liberty German.

The TV station's report said the sheriff's department acquired DNA evidence critical to the investigation of the case. However, Leazenby was speaking about evidence in general and the reporters misled him in their questioning.

"We can't say that we have evidence or that we don't," Leazenby said. "At this point all facets of physical evidence are being considered."

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- A billboard along one of the metro's busiest highways is now asking for your help in finding a killer.

The sign popped up alongside I-35 near exit 233A in Kansas City, Kan. It asks for information in the murders of 13-year-old Abigail Williams and her best friend, 14-year-old Liberty German.

"It doesn't matter how big or small the information they give us,” said Cassie Lane, lead communicator at Carroll County’s 911 Center. “It doesn't matter how close or far the information is. Every call is looked into."

Dispatchers helping with the investigation have already fielded more than 5,000 calls offering tips.

Investigation into murder of Carroll County teens heads into day 17

DELPHI, Ind. (WISH) – The reward money is now at $217,000 for anyone with information leading to an arrest in the murders of Abby Williams and Liberty German.

Investigators said they are trying their best to solve this case. Investigators continue to interview potential suspects and witnesses. They also returned to the crime scene making sure they didn’t miss anything.

It was almost a week ago when investigators first moved into the REMC building to work on the case.

“This is a very good place to conduct an investigation, but we don’t want to be here for a very long time,” said Sgt. Tony Slocum. “We’re going to get this case solved, maybe bring solace to the two families that lost their beautiful daughters and hold someone accountable for their murders.”
