FARC phones tapped in five-year operation

U.S. and Colombian forces set the stage for the hostage rescue with a joint operation to infiltrate the FARC rebels' communications network.

BOGOTA -- The stunning rescue of Ingrid Betancourt and three U.S. military contractors owed its success not just to artful deception, but also to a five-year U.S.-Colombian operation that choked their captors' ability to communicate.

Known as ''Alliance,'' it began with a satellite phone call in 2003, just weeks after the Americans' surveillance plane crashed in the southern Colombian jungle, according to U.S. and Colombian investigators and court documents.

The call came from Nancy Conde, the regional finance and supply chief for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, whose boyfriend would become the American hostages' jailer. She was calling confederates in Miami to see if they could supply the rebels with some satellite phones.

Conde didn't know state security agents were listening.

MIAMI CONTACTS TURN

U.S. law officers arrested the Miami contacts. In exchange for promises of reduced sentences, they put Conde in touch with an FBI front company, according to a U.S. law enforcement official involved in the investigation, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons.

Over more than four years, that company provided wiretapped satphones and other compromised telecommunications equipment that threw the rebels off balance and eventually helped authorities strangle their supply lines.

The operation laid crucial groundwork for the brazen July 2 commando rescue of 15 hostages held by a rebel unit that Conde supplied, the biggest blow ever dealt to the FARC.

In all, U.S. and Colombian agents intercepted more than 5,000 rebel phone conversations, investigators told The Associated Press.

They allegedly heard Conde and her coconspirators negotiate shipments of everything from assault rifles to condoms for distribution to about a third of the FARC's estimated 9,000 fighters, including the 1st Front that held the hostages.

''We're not talking just about finances, communications equipment, food and weapons -- but also medical supplies, medicines and people who cared directly for the wounded,'' said Luis Ernesto Tamayo, the security official who ran the Colombian side of the operation. He wouldn't say whether hostages were discussed in any of the intercepted conversations.

REBEL CALL CENTER

Many of the calls went to a rebel ''call center'' in Villavicencio, where radio communications from the jungle were relayed to international phone circuits.

Located where the Andes mountains open out onto Colombia's southeastern plains, the city's airport was a key conduit to airstrips in rebel-dominated zones.

AP writer Libardo Cardona contributed to this report.

Yes Klaas, they are putting forth an exhibit showing K2's reputation was already well established by other sources than Dr. Phil. I think they will also make the case that Deepak's own words and documented circumstances of the case have provided the fodder to defame himself as well.

I hope Dr. Phil's attorneys have the email Deepak sent as well.

Interesting. Now that the hostages are free, I wonder if other intercepts will be revealed.  Maybe they already have been revealed....just can't be officially utilized...hmmmm

Don't ask me why, but I've been looking at the car photos.  Seems that one mirror has an extension (??). Can you compare both passenger side mirrors and not the one passenger side to the driver's side?  TIA

wreck here is Doofus' car with multiple different colored plates. I am positive they make new plates every year.

We have the Kalpoe Mega Death Mobile with a white plate, a blue plate, and 2 red plates all with the same number.

Rob

All of your license plates have different numbers.  I have never gotten another license plate because I have had the same number for years.

Okay Mr. Big Bucks, fess up, how many Porsches do you have?

Buckeye, I think we will hear more.

3 of the freed returned to Fl yesterday, so I'm not sure if what I hear broadcast is nationally known, or just locally broadcast?

The 3 were interviewed yesterday in Tampa -- and begged us not to forget that there are many more hostages still there. Some for 10 years. On the run now -- looking for food and shelter -- and in grave danger.

With the potential Columbian and/or Venezuelan connection to Natalee's disappearance -- I thought the extent of wiretapping was interesting.

Could someone explain to me:

Glenda (Julia Renfro) posts insinuating, and at times, contradictory hit and run statements, at RU.  The group keeps asking for clarification, and bumps posts waiting, on bated breath, for her return.  Sometimes her mom shows up, but usually nothing.

Why don't they just call her and ask her for the clarification, directly? She seems to like to talk.  I don't believe there is anyone in the house, forcing her to pick up on an unwanted phone call.  She just wants to help the cause.     So.....call her....get your answers.     If she oesn't want to talk, she doesn't need to answer or say a word.

Dr. Phil Attorneys Use Scared Monkeys Natalee Holloway Posts as Exhibit in Court Docs Against Deepak & Satish Kalpoes

http://scaredmonkeys.com/2008/07/12/dr-phil-attorneys-use-scared-monkeys-natalee-holloway-posts-as-exhibit-in-court-docs-against-deepak-satish-kalpoes/

Scared Monkeys makes the list of exhibits for the defence in the case of Deepak & Satish Kalpoe v. Dr. Phil. Scared Monkeys has been on this case from the beginning, long before and certainly long after most of the media coverage.

A recent court document was filed on July 7, 2008 with the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles – Central District by the attorneys of Dr. Phil McGraw, CBS Television and the Estate of Jamie Skeeters as a special motion to strike compliant pursuant to California code of Civil procedure § 425.16 against the claims of Deepak and Satish Kalpoe.

Most excellent! Congrats RED & all Monks...

eta: Is there a link to the court filing? TIA!

Igsigs - there were 4 documents filed mostly alot of junk.  There is a link to one of the PDF files in this post:
