omg. i cant believe all the news today! first i find out that prosecutors may be charging little sandra cantus alleged killer melissa huckaby with sexual assault and rape with a foreign object which can bring the death penalty into play. then i hear prosecutors are going to seek the death penalty against casey anthony AND that george and cindy will be doing oprah in may. then comes phil spector being found guilty of second degree murder and taken into custody with sentencing to come.

the latter is good news indeed, as was yesterdays news that the navy jumped to action and rescued the captain held hostage by somalie pirates, killing 3 of them in the process. yay for navy sharpshooters and commanders taking the needed steps! now lets hope phil gets the full 18 years and may it be in general population.

the sandra cantu and caylee anthony cases make me heartsick. evil looks just like everyone else, what chance do any of our children have?

I treated the little ones in our family and extended family to see the new Hannah Montana movies Friday night.....our 16yo cousins were 'in charge'...with instructions that NONE of the little ones were to go anyplace....without one of the older 16 yo's with them...they were to be escorted to the potty and back..yes, the little boys as well....it's a shame when we are frighten to let our little ones out of our sight.  The older ones did a great job and took it very seriously. God Bless our Children

ya i always took my boys into the ladies room for bathroom visits and i was hardly the only one doing so. sadly its all too common that the offender is not a stranger but someone known to both the family and child. which begs the question of how one can ever be sure of those we entrust our children with, and i just cant come up with a good answer.

I posted this at the bottom of another thread in the News of the Day forum (I think) so if you don't get over there often, here's more news on the brave Captain's rescue and our President's involvement in it.

I cannot imagine jumping ship INTO the ocean just a heartbeat ahead of being gunned down only to have the would-be killers end up dead instead. It all must seem surreal to that Captain. I bet he will be sooooooooo happy to get hugs from his family.

Anyway, here are the article excerpts:

Obama twice approved force to rescue hostage

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama twice authorized the military to rescue a U.S. captain who was being held by Somali pirates and whose life appeared to be at risk, administration officials said after Sunday's rescue.

The Defense Department twice asked Obama for permission to use military force to rescue Capt. Richard Phillips from a lifeboat off the Somali coast. Obama first gave permission around 8 p.m. Friday, and upgraded it at 9:20 a.m. Saturday. Officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations said the second order was to encompass more military personnel and equipment that arrived in the Indian Ocean to engage the pirates.

Somali pirates last week boarded the Maersk Alabama off the Horn of Africa. The crew fought back, but Phillips surrendered himself to safeguard his men. Navy ships soon were on their way to the area.

White House officials on Sunday said Obama received regular updates by phone and in person at the White House — including 11 memos — and during his daily intelligence briefings with senior officials. The National Security Council last updated the president on a contingency plan for Phillips at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a timeline of events released Sunday afternoon by the White House.

The president was in the residence Sunday when officials called him to alert him the five-day standoff was over, officials said.

Shortly after, the White House released a statement praising Phillips' behavior.

"I share the country's admiration for the bravery of Capt. Phillips and his selfless concern for his crew," Obama said. "His courage is a model for all Americans."

It was Obama's first public comment on the situation. Administration officials said the president made an effort not to call attention to the hostage situation while it was ongoing. Officials said they didn't want to send mixed signals to the pirates or do anything that might threaten Phillips' life.

An administration official also said Obama phoned Phillips and his family on Sunday.

In the same public statement, Obama said more must be done to prevent future attacks along the lawless African coast, where other ships remain under pirate control.

"We remain resolved to halt the rise of piracy in this region. To achieve that goal, we must continue to work with our partners to prevent future attacks, be prepared to interdict acts of piracy and ensure that those who commit acts of piracy are held accountable for their crimes," Obama said.

To that end, White House officials said the Justice Department is looking at evidence and considering whether to file criminal charges against a Somali pirate captured during the standoff.

Yep.

Obama pledges to fight piracy; pirates vow revenge

NAIROBI, Kenya – President Barack Obama promised Monday to work with other nations "to halt the rise of piracy," while Somali pirates vowed revenge for the deaths of three colleagues shot by snipers during the daring high-seas rescue of an American sea captain.

The pirates' threat raised fears for the safety of some 230 foreign sailors still held hostage in more than a dozen ships anchored off lawless Somalia.

Sunday's nighttime operation was a remarkable achievement for snipers on a rolling warship in choppy seas, but few experts believe the victory will quell a rising tide of attacks in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

One of the American sailors whose captain was rescued after the five-day standoff urged Obama on Monday to take the lead in ending the scourge of piracy.

"It's time for us to step in and put an end to this crisis," he said. "It's a crisis, wake up," said Shane Murphy, chief mate aboard the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama.

At a Washington news conference, Obama said: "I want to be very clear that we are resolved to halt the rise of piracy in that region and to achieve that goal, we're going to have to continue to work with our partners to prevent future attacks."

"We have to continue to be prepared to confront them when they arise, and we have to ensure that those who commit acts of piracy are held accountable for their crimes," the president said.
