Sheriff Warns, 'There Is a Child Killer on the Loose."

As investigators examined a child's body found in a Georgia landfill, they hoped they wouldn't find what they were looking for.
But a birthmark and clothing told them that they had, indeed, found 7-year-old Somer Thompson, who disappeared Monday while walking home from school in her Orange Park, Fla., neighborhood.

"There is a child killer on the loose. I fear for our community," Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said at a news conference today.

"We feel very comfortable that we are going to solve this case," Beseler told "Good Morning America" today, as police await an official identification from the medical examiner's office.

Janet I want to address your response to me after I went to bed last night. I don't believe that a young child should walk home, she was walking home with her brother and sister and friends. I know personally how one becomes to the point where you feel safe, is it wrong, perhaps it is. Should a child be able to enjoy their youth without looking over their shoulders every moment, they should be able to, sadly they can't. Have I made many mistakes when my kids were young, you bet I did, I feel that I was a good mom, very careful, did everything for them, but I made mistakes, unfortunately. Should the mom be blamed for this horrible tragedy, by all appearances she seems like a good person, I don't know. I just can't imagine living the rest of my life going over and over this in my mind. A tragedy happened, and I apologize, but I just at this point can't go after the mom, I saw the look in her eyes and on her face, and all I can say is God Bless you, and may you be able to continue with your life for the sake of your other children.

During their investigation police interviewed close to 75 registered sex offenders who resided within a 5-mile radius of where the young girl lived. However state officials say the number of sex offenders in the area is much higher, and reveal 161 reside in close proximity to to the Thompson home.
