In Rome, a new generation of Benedict XVI scholars is on the rise
By Andrea Gagliarducci
Rome, Italy, Mar 2, 2017 / 12:04 am
(CNA/EWTN News).-
The theological legacy of Benedict XVI continues, four years after his pontificate came to an end.
A group of graduate students has gathered around the Ratzinger Foundation to further their studies and discussions on the thought of the former Pope, cardinal, and theology professor
.
Professor Pierluca Azzaro, a collaborator of the Ratzinger Foundation who translated Ratzinger’s complete works into Italian, told CNA these students reflect “the increasing interest toward Joseph Ratzinger’s theology.”
In one gathering, the students heard Father Stephan Horn, the coordinator of the Ratzinger Schuelerkreis, the circle of Joseph Ratzinger’s former students.
Azzaro summed up Fr. Horn’s remarks: “Joseph Ratzinger never wanted to assert himself and his ideas. He rather wanted to open people’s gaze to the Church.”
The priest stressed Benedict XVI’s own identity as a priest and his care for the communication of the faith.
Besides the gathering with Fr. Horn, the students have held an introductory meeting and have met with Father Federico Lombardi, president of the Ratzinger Foundation and former Vatican spokesperson.
Since 2010, the foundation has awarded its Ratzinger Prize to noted theologians. Some compare the honor to the Nobel Prize of Theology.

Key aide to Pope Benedict: As he approaches 90, he’s fine
March 19, 2017
ROME -
Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI turns 90 next month, but according to his closest aide, his advanced age hasn’t yet created any truly serious health challenges aside from a basic problem with walking without assistance
.
“Pope Benedict is in good shape,” said German Archbishop Georg Gänswein, the Prefect of the Papal Household for Pope Francis and also private secretary to Pope Benedict.
“What bothers him most are his legs,” Gänswein said, “so he uses a walker for help, and he gets along very well.”
Gänswein made the comments in a brief interview with Vatican Radio.
“Otherwise, he’s quite clear in his head, and quite bright,” he said. “He participates in everything. He reads, he prays, he listens to music, and he has visitors.”

Benedict XVI tells EWTN: 'Thank you for your work'
By Elise Harris
Vatican City, Mar 31, 2017 / 04:42 pm
(CNA/EWTN News).-
Members of EWTN’s Rome Bureau on Friday met Benedict XVI in the Vatican Gardens to explain their work and thank him for his service to the Church, while he in turn thanked them for their efforts
.
“Thank you for your work,” the emeritus Pope said March 31 to the six persons present at the encounter, who represented the various programs produced at the bureau.
The team met Benedict in the Vatican Gardens at 4:30 in the afternoon, when the emeritus Pope prays his daily rosary. He was accompanied by Archbishop Georg Ganswein, prefect of the papal household.
After finishing his prayer, Benedict removed his hat and stood up to greet the team.
Benedict was clear and alert, and interested in each person as they approched him.
Leading the delegation, Holdren gave a brief introduction to the organization; the emeritus Pope marvelled at the size of the bureau.
Benedict greeted each member of the group individually, learning about their families and their work.
Holdren gave the Bavarian personal letters from some of those present and their families. He in turn offered each of them a medal and commemorative cards of his 2012 visit to Lebanon, the last he took as Roman Pontiff.
He then gave the group his blessing and departed for his residence in the Vatican's Mater Ecclesiae monastery.
The audience was granted to mark the one-year anniversary of the March 27, 2016 death of Mother Angelica, foundress of EWTN.

Cooperatores veritatis: a bithday gift to the Pope emeritus
2017-04-06 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio)
Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI turns 90 years of age on April 16th. To mark the occasion the Vatican Foundation Joseph Ratzinger – Benedict XVI has edited a special festschrift volume of essays by Ratzinger Prize-winning theologians, which was presented on Thursday afternoon at the Augustinianum Patristic Institute of Rome
.
Titled Cooperatores veritatis: Tributes to Pope emeritus Benedict XVI on his 90th Birthday, assembled under the editorship of Pierluca Azzaro and Fr. Federico Lombardi, SJ and published by the Vatican Publishing House, the volume is at once a testament to the profound influence of the thought of the Pope emeritus across intellectual disciplines, and a genuine contribution to scholarship and intellectual endeavour.
Its main title, Cooperatores veritatis is taken from Pope emeritus Benedict XVI’s episcopal motto.
In remarks to Vatican Radio ahead of the presentation, the President of the Ratzinger Foundation, Fr. Federico Lombardi SJ, explained that the choice of the motto as the volume’s main title encapsulates the life, work, and legacy of the man who became the 264th Successor to St. Peter. “It is a[n episcopal] motto that came from his whole life prior [to consecration as a bishop], and represented his identity, his commitment as a theologian and as a servant of theology in the Church,” Fr. Lombardi said.

New book shows interest in Pope Benedict XVI is here to stay
Claire Giangravè April 7, 2017
ROME -
Priests and theologians, bishops and ambassadors, nuns and scholars braved a spring deluge on April 6 to attend the presentation of a new book dedicated to the life’s work of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI at the Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum of Rome.
Interest in the retired pope shows no sign of slowing down as his essential contributions to the Church and theology continue to be relevant today
.
Three new biographies on the German pontiff have been published in Italy this week alone. Three collections of essays by the pope emeritus are also in the works. Italy’s public television, Rai, will air two one-hour documentaries on Benedict celebrating his life.
Enthusiasm over the figure of Benedict XVI is not limited to Italy. All over the world symposiums, meetings and events take place focusing on the pope’s legacy.
At the Augustinianum, the Vatican publishing house and the Joseph Ratzinger-Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation unveiled Cooperatores Veritatis (Co-workers of the truth), a collection of essays by all 13 winners of the Ratzinger prize analyzing the fundamental contributions by Benedict’s life work.

Poland to host conference for ex-Pope's 90th birthday
07.04.2017 08:12
The Polish parliament and Catholic bishops will hold an international conference to mark the 90th birthday of retired Pope Benedict XVI on 19 April.
The conference entitled “The concept of the State in the view of Pope Benedict XVI's teachings” is “unusually current”, according to Deputy Speaker Ryszard Terlecki, who extended an invitation to the event in parliament on Thursday.
The retired Pope's teachings say that the Catholic Church and state institutions can co-exist without limiting social, political and cultural relationships, Terlecki said.
He added that faith should infiltrate secular institutions.

Archbishop Gänswein: Benedict XVI Won’t Enter ‘Amoris Laetitia’ Controversy
Edward Pentin
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who turns 90 on Easter Sunday, has read Amoris Laetitia thoroughly, taken note of the controversies surrounding the document and how it is implemented, but is not commenting on it in any way.
This is according to Benedict’s personal secretary, Archbishop Georg Gänswein who, in an April 12 interview with the Italian daily La Repubblica, said the former pope is well aware of contrasts made between him and Pope Francis, but does not let them provoke him, and has “no intention of entering controversies that feel far away from him."
Benedict XVI, he said, is “serene, quiet and in a good mood,” doing only those things that his strength allows.

Happy 90th Birthday, Pope Benedict!
Benedict XVI shares a 90th birthday beer with family and friends
John L. Allen Jr. April 17, 2017
Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI actually turned 90 years old on Sunday, but because the day was Easter, his closest aide Archbishop George Gänswein announced that a “modest” celebration would be held today instead, the day that Italians observe as Pasquetta, meaning the Monday after Easter.
What “modest” means for a retired pope living on Vatican grounds, however, is a bit different than for the rest of us.
Benedict XVI passed the day in the company of his beloved 93-year-old brother, Monsignor Georg Ratzinger, as well as a small delegation from his native Bavaria in southern Germany. Among other things, the party enjoyed some beer and pretzels, both considered staples of Bavarian cuisine.

This book published in Italy gives pope emeritus admirers an opportunity to see unpublished images of Pope Benedict XVI for the first time.
On the occasion of his 90th birthday, these images and many others have been published in the book "Immagini di una vita", in English, "Images of a life.”
Presently, it is only available in Italian, but it has already attracted the attention of publishers in other languages
.
It also includes this recent photo, in which he jokes with some of his students about his mobility problems.

For Pope Benedict XVI’s 90th Birthday, a Conference in Warsaw
Benedict XVI, Pope Francis Addressed Letters to Its Participants, Who Included Cardinal Müller and Fr. Lombardi

“A State based on values is a value”—this was emphasized by the participants at a Conference on the concept of the State in the perspective of teaching J. Ratzinger / Benedict XVI
. The event was organized by the Vatican’s Joseph Ratzinger Foundation, the Polish Bishops’ Conference, and the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. The meeting was held on April 19, 2017.
The conference in Warsaw dedicated to Benedict XVI was opened by Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference. In his speech, he emphasized that, according to the teaching of Cardinal Ratzinger, the State’s action should be subordinate to the law. He added that the main task of politicians is to serve the law and to fight against injustice.
“Man does not exist by the will of the state, but the State exists because man wills it,” stressed Card. Gerhard Müller, who was one of the special guests of the conference. The Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, speaking about the relationship between the Church and the State, pointed out that the dignity of man is always the limit of public authority. He said that a State’s true sovereignty is in its willingness to serve the common good of all its citizens, and that Christianity’s cultural heritage is the best protection against totalitarian ideologies.

Benedict XVI Warns of ‘Dangerous Situation’ With Radical Atheism and Radical Islam
In a new message addressed to a conference sponsored by Poland’s president, Benedict warns this contrast ‘creates a dangerous situation for our age.’
Filip Mazurczak
Pope Emeritus Benedict discussed the joint perils posed by radical Islam and radical atheistic secularism in a message he sent to a conference held April 19 in Warsaw, Poland, on the topic of his thinking about the concept of the state, held to coincide with his 90th birthday. Benedict’s comments were delivered to the conference by Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, papal nuncio to Poland.
Here is the text of the pope emeritus’ comments, which were made in Polish and translated for the Register:

Pope Benedict’s Message at Funeral of Cardinal Meisner: “The Lord Does Not Abandon His Church”
Steve Skojec July 15, 2017
We reported last week on the death of Cardinal Joachim Meisner of Germany, Archbishop Emeritus of Cologne and one of the four so-called “dubia cardinals”. Dr. Maike Hickson also shared a touching memorial of Meisner, who by all accounts was beloved by all who knew him. In a report on the German cardinal written last year, Hickson also noted his closeness to Pope Benedict XVI, and his role in the election of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger to the office of the papacy in 2005, in opposition to the wishes of the so-called “Sankt Gallen Mafia,” who were reported to have desired the election of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio at that time.
Today,
Saturday, July 15, 2017
, the funeral Mass for Cardinal Meisner was offered in Cologne Cathedral. Pope Francis, who was not present, had a message read to those gathered by the Apostolic Nuncio to Germany, Archbishop Nikola Eterović. Then, in what has been characterized as a surprise — particularly considering his usual silence on matters facing the Church — a message from the Pope Emeritus himself was read by his Personal Secretary, Archbishop Georg Gänswein, who also serves as Prefect of the Papal Household for Pope Francis
.
When one reads the following message — particularly that moment where the Pope Emeritus speaks of how Meisner “learned to let go and to live out of a deep conviction that the Lord does not abandon His Church, even if the boat has taken on so much water as to be on the verge of capsizing,” one cannot help but see in it a possible reflection on his own choice to step away from the papacy, and the crisis that even now engulfs the Church in his absence. This message, of course, of the Lord not abandoning His Church, cannot be read in isolation from the somewhat cryptic message the Pope Emeritus gave the five new cardinals at the ordinary public consistory last month: “The Lord wins in the end.” It would appear this is a theme very much on the mind of the former pontiff in recent days.
Below we provide the full text of Pope Benedict’s message on the occasion of the funeral of Cardinal Joachim Meisner, graciously translated by 1P5’s Matthew Karmel
