CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Crews are searching an area at West 30th between Wade and Seymour. They are preparing to dig in a now empty lot - a home that once stood on the property was torn down years ago.

The FBI confirms they received a tip that led them to the area.

Reporter Ed Gallek has learned a man, Robert Wolford, who went to prison for murdering a homeless person wrote letters to law enforcement telling them he knows where Amanda's body is.

IIRC,that house came down in late 2005,and no one had lived in it for yrs
the aluminum siding and copper piping,had been stolen,it was a hang
for drug abuse,i was just in that hood in early june for a Bparty,about a block
away,when i lived in clev,i went by that house many,many times,the guy RW
who said he murdered Amanda,is the same age as her
not far from where Amanda worked,was a big drug bust,the guy an older man
had been dealing,running a drug house for about 20yr until he was busted in
2006. the house was 2blocks south of lorain and the BK,the old man had 2 more
drug houses too,not sure where,i know they were on the west side
RW is said to have a drug prob,and it was crack and thats what the old man
sold. if RW dealt with the old man,(the news cast says RW and Amanda knew
each other) so maybe they knew each other,from the BK. JMO

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Police still don't know where Amanda Berry is, but they know where she isn't. After two days of looking into a prisoner's tip, they came up with nothing.

"Nothing of evidentiary value. Nothing found in the dirt at all," said a spokesperson.

Amanda Berry's family had a hard time finding the right words, but they said if anything, they feel relief.

No findings mean there's hope that Amanda, who disappeared in 2003 at age 16, is still alive out there.

She also told the 911 dispatcher that Gina DeJesus is with her.  A third missing woman, 32-year old Michelle Knight, was in the home with Berry and DeJesus. It's believed Knight disappeared when she was 20.

A witness who spoke Spanish told NewsChannel5's Stephanie Ramirez that he helped break down the door. He said there was a child who was about 4 or 5 years old with Berry, as well as other children inside the house. He said he recognized Berry from posters.

Officers have a suspect in custody. There will be a media briefing Tuesday morning.

Two women, missing for a decade, found alive in residential Cleveland home

CLEVELAND — Two women who went missing as teenagers about a decade ago were found alive Monday in a residential area just south of downtown, within a few miles of where they disappeared.

Cheering crowds gathered Monday night on the street near the home where police said Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and a third woman were found earlier in the day. The identity of the third woman hadn’t been confirmed.

Police didn’t immediately provide any details of how the women were found or what conditions they were in.

Berry disappeared at age 16 on April 21, 2003, when she called her sister to say she was getting a ride home from her job at a Burger King. DeJesus went missing at age 14 on her way home from school about a year later.

In January, a prison inmate was sentenced to 4 1/2 years after admitting he provided a false burial tip in the disappearance of Berry, who had last been seen the day before her 17th birthday. A judge in Cleveland sentenced Robert Wolford on his guilty plea to obstruction of justice, making a false report and making a false alarm.

CLEVELAND -- We have breaking news where Cleveland Police say they've discovered Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus and a third woman named Michelle Knight, all of whom have been missing for years.

According to Cleveland Police, the women were being kept in a house in the 2200 block of Seymour Avenue near West 25th Street.

The women identified themselves as Amanda Berry, now 27, and Gina DeJesus, now 23, and Berry was holding a baby. Police have not released any more information at this time.

WKYC confirmed they were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center and friends and family have gathered outside MetroHealth.

Amanda was last seen at approximately 7:45 p.m. on April 21, 2003, near West 110th Street and Lorain Avenue wearing a Burger King uniform and a black apron with "Burger King" written on it in yellow letters.

Her mother, Louwanna Miller, passed away in March of 2006.

DeJesus, then 14, disappeared April 2, 2004, while walking home from school in the same area. Since then, Berry and DeJesus have been the subject of numerous vigils.

Police confirmed that the man, Ariel Castro, 52, who was in the house was taken into custody and they will hold a press conference Tuesday morning.

Castro’s uncle, Julio Castro, who owns a store called Caribe at the corner of West 25th Street and Seymour, said he has mixed emotions about the discovery.

“For me, it’s bad on one side, and good on the other side.”
 
Julio Castro said that his nephew used to play bass in various bands that performed at a local club once owned by DeJesus’ uncle. He said he believes his nephew knew the family from the club and the neighborhood.

Charlie Czorba, a Caribe customer who lives on Seymour said he was stunned by how long the women had lived at the house undetected.

“This is our own backyard,” Czorba. “These girls were locked up in our own backyard.”

Another neighbor, Victor Pratts, who has lived on street for about 25 years, said Ariel Castro would occasionally come out and ride a four- wheeler with him. But Pratts said he never saw any of the three women enter or exit the house.

Neighbor Charles Ramsey said he called 9-1-1 after discovering Berry in Castro's home. He added that the dispatcher didn't take him seriously.
 
Ramsey said he heard a girl screaming, "Help, help me out." He said the girl looked familiar.

Ramsey said Castro took off running, while Ramsey kicked and broke the bottom of a door, allowing Berry to crawl out.

Police arrested Castro at a nearby McDonald's and brought the other two women out of the house, witnesses said.

Amanda was one day shy of her 17th birthday when she went missing on her way home to her birthday party. She disappeared on April 21, 2003 after leaving her job at Burger King at West 110th Street and Lorain Avenue.

Amanda's mother, Louwana, died at age 43 in March of 2006 after years of searching for her daughter. Many say Louwana died of a broken heart.

Cleveland Police arrested a 52-year-old Hispanic man at the house where the three women were found Monday. He is a Cleveland City Schools bus driver.

Nancy Ruiz, Gina DeJesus' mom told 19 Action News reporter Lydia Esparra that they are going to take a least 24 hours to connect with their daughter. After that they will talk to the media Tuesday.

Gina DeJesus disappeared in 2004 at the age of 14. She was walking home from school when she vanished. At the time of her disappearance family members believed she was taken by human traffickers.

3 Ohio women missing for decade found alive, as cops arrest 52-year-old man

Cheering crowds gathered Monday night on the street near the home where police said Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and a third woman were found earlier in the day. The identity of the third woman hadn't been confirmed, but Fox 8 and other local media identified her as Michele Knight.

In September 2006, police acting on a tip tore up the concrete floor of the garage and used a cadaver dog to search unsuccessfully for DeJesus' body. Investigators confiscated 19 pieces of evidence during their search but declined to comment on the significance of the items then.

No Amber Alert was issued the day DeJesus failed to return home from school in April 2004 because no one witnessed her abduction. The lack of an Amber Alert angered her father, Felix DeJesus, who said in 2006 he believed the public will listen even if the alerts become routine.

"The Amber Alert should work for any missing child," Felix DeJesus said then. "It doesn't have to be an abduction. Whether it's an abduction or a runaway, a child needs to be found. We need to change this law."

"Help me, I am Amanda Berry," she said, her voice distraught and quick, according to an audio recording of the call released Monday night. "I've been kidnapped and I've been missing for 10 years. And I'm here and I'm free now."

Another 911 call came in less than a minute later from a man who saw Berry busting out of the house.

"She's like, 'This (expletive) kidnapped me and my daughter,'" Charles Ramsey told 911.

A 52-year-old man has been arrested, Cleveland police said on their website.

The three women are in fair condition, Gerald Maloney, an emergency department physician at Metro Health Medical Center, said Monday night.

"I am thankful that Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight have been found alive," Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said. "We have many unanswered questions regarding this case and the investigation will be ongoing. Again, I am thankful that these three young ladies are found and alive."

Angie Garcia, whose aunt lives across the street from where the women were found, said Berry ran over to the house Monday and begged to use the phone. Berry, who was carrying a child, told the aunt who she was and then asked to use the phone to call 911.

The women and another young child came out of the house across the street, Garcia said.

Three brothers connected to the disappearances of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight have been arrested.

The men, ages 50, 52, and 54, are expected to be charged within the next 36 hours.

Cleveland Police confirm that the three women were located in a house on Seymour Avenue Monday afternoon.

All three seem to be in good health.

"I can't wait to talk to her, I can't wait to hold her, to see her," said Gale Mitchell, Amanda's aunt.

CLEVELAND - Relatives of Gina DeJesus said the teen who went missing nearly a decade ago is healthy and doing well.

DeJesus was found in a Cleveland home Monday night after she disappeared walking home from Wilbur Wright Middle School in 2004.

“Gina is doing well, she's in good spirits,” said Sandra Ruiz off camera. “She remembers everyone.”

“She asked for her brother and sister and her nieces that they all lived with,” said Sheila Figaro, DeJesus' second cousin.

Figaro said she and her family never gave up hope that DeJesus would be found alive.

Three girls who went missing as teenagers managed to escape from their captor after spending a decade chained up in the dungeon of an Ohio house.

The trio escaped after a neighbour helped break down the door after hearing Berry scream for help when their captor left the house.

I'm so happy that these girls are safe now.  I am so disgusted at the same time.  It makes me sick to my stomach and to learn that he was a bus driver and there was an incident where a child was left on the bus...wonder what happened there?  I am so proud of Amanda for breaking free and for the neighbor that helped her to get out...I really hope that he gets a reward of some sort (not that it is about that, I am sure that he is thoroughly rewarded by seeing them free). 

I would really like to know what happened and why yesterday she was able to get away and no other time prior to yesterday.  I pray for peace and healing for these young ladies, I cannot even imagine the horrors that they went through. 

Listening to the dispatcher, it seems she didn't believe her.  Actually, seemed kind of rude to me.  Anyone else feel that way?  "I told you, talk to the police when they get there."  I would have kept her on the phone, poor girl.

Just checked Daily Mail...at least 5 children were born between the 3 kidnapped women. And the kidnappers daughter is serving a 26 yr prison sentence for trying to murder her own infant daughter.

The article quotes her brother, Ariel "Anthony" Castro (same first name as his father), as saying she was mentally ill.

The name of the injured child was also discussed by Castro and his relatives on social media sites as being a member of the family.

CLEVELAND - A police source said there were multiple pregnancies among the three missing women found in a Cleveland home Monday night.

The source told NewsChannel5’s Paul Kiska the pregnancies were “multiple” between Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, but no specific number was mentioned.

According to the source, one of the victims had two to three miscarriages in the Seymour Avenue because she was malnourished.

Another police source who is actively working on this investigation told NewsChannel5’s Michael Baldwin at least five babies were born inside the home. It’s not clear if that number includes Berry’s 6-year-old daughter who was found in the house with the women.

The three victims were rescued after getting the attention of a neighbor and calling 911.

There were initial reports of more children inside the home, but police have not released any other details about that specific piece of information.

Three brothers, Ariel, Pedro and Oneil Castro were arrested Monday night in connection with the kidnappings.

Cleveland police hit with claims of missed clues after 3 women freed

CLEVELAND –  One neighbor says a naked woman was seen crawling on her hands and knees in the backyard of the house a few years ago. Another heard pounding on the home's doors and noticed plastic bags over the windows.

Both times, police showed up but never went inside, neighbors say. Police also paid a visit to the house in 2004, but no one answered the door.

Now, after three women who vanished a decade ago were found captive Monday at the peeling, rundown house, Cleveland police are facing questions for the second time in four years about their handling of missing-person cases and are conducting an internal review to see if they overlooked anything.

City Safety Director Martin Flask said Tuesday that investigators had no record of anyone calling about criminal activity at the house but were still checking police, fire and emergency databases.

At least twice in recent years, neighbors said, police were called to the house on Seymour Avenue from which Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were rescued Monday night, along with Berry’s six-year-old daughter.

Cleveland police search for more women after tip from kidnap victim, report says

CLEVELAND –  Cleveland police are searching properties Wednesday morning near the home called a 'house of horrors' after they were reportedly alerted by one of the kidnap victims that there may be more women.

Details of a possible fourth victim came to light during police interviews with the oldest victim,  Michelle Knight, who reportedly said there was another girl at the home about 10 years ago, but disappeared.

In 2007, Ashley Summers, a 14 year old, disappeared in the same neighborhood. Initially it was believed Summers was a runaway but a few years later, police saw a potential link with the other missing girls.

Knight reportedly told police she was unsure of how many other women may have been in the house because they were all kept in separate locked rooms.

Knight vanished at age 20 in 2002. Berry disappeared at 16 in 2003, when she called her sister to say she was getting a ride home from her job at a Burger King. About a year later, DeJesus vanished at 14 on her way home from school.

Except I'm thinking make them go through that for twenty years, double what they put these poor women through and poor children, and then... death by public justice like the old days. I think you and I share the same rage over this, and I like your ideas on the administration of justice! Since jail seems not to be the deterrent it once was, maybe it's time to step up the consequences! I want the girls to be able to sit on the stand and give the testimony that puts these 3 through the ringer. I want the girls to hold the power for a change and may it be just the captor's beginning of a daily life filled with paralyzing fear, excruciating pain, and absolute hopelessness.

There are so many things that should happen due to this and hopefully a lot of good will come out of it. I can't help but suspect authorities involved in this deserves some heavy scrutiny. I've listened to the people saying they told the police about the naked woman in the backyard and everything... and police saying they have no records of those events. If it's anything like it is where I live, there's no record unless the police officer records it due to taking any action or if the person who called for the police asks for something to be put on the record just for the sake of having it on record. So no, there's no records to be found if these things really did take place, but I believe the witnesses. It happens in our neck of the woods too often. You have to do more than stand on your head and scream to get authorities to hear you. And too often that gets you nothing either. We've got some dang fine men and women in uniform but too many who are sloppy and just don't care or don't follow up on things that are pretty danged suspicious... and it doesn't seem to bother them that they wear a badge that bears a heavy vow to protect and serve, never seems to enter their minds that if they aint got it in their hearts any more to please, PLEASE, take off the badge and go do something else instead of making mistakes that can be fatal due to burnout or what have you.

It doesn't take a lot of detective work to see three women abducted one after another one year after another from the same neighborhood, it's pretty darn probable someone is definitely abducting and apparently is very familiar with the area and probably lives within it or near it... there can't be that many people to profile in the area that have the potential for doing such a thing. And there's a possibility more were abducted?! And more would have been if Amanda had not rescued herself, her child, Michelle and Gina... along with Mr. Ramsay helping her. Here's hoping the media will hound and hound for the details of how authorities have handled this investigation and some real lasting change happens.

Totally agree! It was odd that the 911 dispatcher did not stay on the phone with her until the police got there! It was obvious that Amanda was distraught and was seeking comfort and reassurance that she was safe.

According to the Cuyahoga County Auditor's website, owner Ariel Castro owes $2,501 in taxes for 2010, 2011 and 2012, which includes delinquent penalties, on the house at 2207 Seymour Ave..

Castro bought the house on April 25, 1992, for $12,000 from Edwin and Antonia Castro, who lived on West 25th Street. Whether Ariel Castro is related to Edwin and Antonia Castro is unclear.

CLEVELAND --  Kidnapping and rape charges were filed Wednesday against a man arrested after three women missing for about a decade were found alive at his home.

Homeowner Ariel Castro was charged while his brothers, Pedro and Onil Castro, were held but faced no immediate charges.

The men were in custody and couldn't be reached for comment. Their brother-in-law has said the family is "shocked" after hearing about the women at the home.

The three women were subjected to prolonged sexual and psychological abuse and suffered miscarriages, a city councilman briefed on the case said Wednesday.

Councilman Brian Cummins said that many details remain unclear, including the number of pregnancies and the conditions under which the miscarriages occurred. He also said the women were kept in the basement for some time without having access to the rest of the house. Police said they were apparently bound with ropes and chains.

No charges have been filed against Castro's brothers, Onil, 50, and Pedro, 54, who were taken into custody after the women were found. Cleveland police's Deputy Chief Ed Tomba and prosecutor Victor Perez both said there is nothing to lead investigators to believe Ariel Castro's brothers were involved in or had any knowledge of the alleged crimes.
 
"As far as what their relationship was, Ariel kept everybody at a distance," Tomba said Wednesday evening.

This is probably just the beginning of the charges against this sick SOB. Because of dealing with issues/crimes that were perpetrated against minors, all could not come out at this time. The other pregnancies and deaths of those babies, if that is true, will lead to murder charges.

Also, it is still open as to what other victims he might have kidnapped. We will probably learn that this is the tip of the iceberg. If he could keep these 3 girls under wraps for 10 years, he is capable of much, much more.

Juan Alicea, a relative of Castro, said the suspect was intensely private and kept his social life outside of his home.

"He'd never have anyone come over," Alicea said. "He'd never had [a] social life unless they were outside on the porch or something, as far as I know."

Early on, after Amanda escaped, I heard on TV that when Amanda was first kidnapped, there was another girl already there who vanished. Has that been disproved or does anyone know anything about that? TIA!

CLEVELAND - Radio traffic released Wednesday gives insight into the Cleveland officers’ point of view in responding to the house where three missing were found alive.

The dispatcher sent officers to 2210 Seymour Avenue on the city’s near west side where Berry said she fled after escaping her captor's home at 2207 Seymour Avenue.

At 5:55 p.m., police arrived at the scene and immediately recognized this situation was no joke.

The people who said that they had seen the women on all fours in the backyard were not telling the truth according to reports from the women involved. Of course there could have been other women, but these 3 victims are saying  that it was not them

Ariel Castro, the man police say kidnapped and held captive three girls for more than a decade, was arraigned inside Cleveland Municipal Court Thursday morning where the judge set bail at $2 million for each criminal count he faces.

Ariel Castro, who wore a navy blue jumpsuit and tucked his chin inside his collar at the hearing, did not speak and was read the charges of four counts of kidnapping and rape and one count of kidnapping.

Brian Murphy, the assistant prosecutor, said Ariel Castro kidnapped the three women to use them in a "self-gratifying," "self-serving" way.

Police made it clear they believe that each kidnap victim was "repeatedly sexually assaulted by the defendant," and that the abuse occurred "during the entire course of captivity," according to charging documents filed in court Wednesday.

Berry, however, delivered her tormentor's apparent child six years ago in a small inflatable pool "so the mess was easy to clean up," a law enforcement source told WEWS.

The little girl, named Jocelyn, was born Christmas Day in 2006, the mother told her family in a phone call on Tuesday, according to WEWS.

Jocelyn, police say, was the captive who had the most freedom, officials said. The 6-year-old left the house occasionally with the suspect, Cleveland Chief of Police Michael McGrath told ABC News. Police said they were conducting a paternity test and were not yet certain the baby was fathered by Castro.

"She did leave the house. I have information that she did leave the house occasionally with the suspect," McGrath said Wednesday

Ohio prosecutor to seek murder charges against Ariel Castro

An Ohio prosecutor said Thursday he intends to pursue capital murder charges, as well as counts for kidnapping and rape, against Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man accused of holding three women and a child captive for years in his rundown home.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty told reporters that aggravated murder charges could be filed in connection with miscarriages that police say one of the abducted women suffered when Castro used force to terminate her pregnancies after repeatedly raping her.
“The law of Ohio calls for the death penalty for those most depraved criminals who commit aggravated murder during the course of a kidnapping,” McGinty said at a news conference. He also said that Castro, who was charged Wednesday with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape, would face justice for every act of sexual violence, assault and other crimes against the women, meaning that the counts could add up to hundreds.

Earlier Thursday, Castro, 52, was ordered held on $8 million bond in the case, which came to light Monday night when Amanda Berry, a 27-year-old woman abducted a decade ago, escaped and alerted authorities.

Castro is charged with kidnapping Berry, as well as Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight and a 6-year-old girl to whom Berry gave birth while being held captive. Law enforcement authorities say he repeatedly raped DeJesus, Knight and Berry.

Judge Lauren Moore calculated bail at $2 million per victim, including the little girl.
Dozens of cameras clicked incessantly during the brief hearing in Cleveland Municipal Court. Castro, a former school bus driver who lost his job last year because of repeated misconduct, kept his eyes lowered and his chin tucked into the zipped top of a dark blue jacket or jumpsuit. At times, he appeared to be chewing on the collar.

His attorney, apparently seeking a manageable bail, told Moore that Castro was a longtime resident of Cleveland, with no prior felony convictions and limited financial resources, living off an unemployment check.

But Brian Murphy, an assistant Cuyahoga County prosecutor, asked for bond of $5 million, saying Castro put the women through a “horrifying ordeal” that included repeated beatings and sexual assaults, and periods of being bound and restrained inside Castro’s home.

“They were never free to leave this residence,” Murphy said, describing the house on Seymour Avenue as “a prison for these three women.”

Cleveland suspect's daughter in prison for slashing baby's throat

(CNN) -- The daughter of Ariel Castro, the primary suspect in the abduction of three women found alive this week, is serving a 25-year sentence in an Indiana prison for the attempted murder of her baby six years ago.
Emily Castro was sentenced to 30 years with five years suspended. A judge found Castro guilty but mentally ill of cutting her 11-month-old daughter four times on the neck in April 2007.
An appeal, filed in late 2008, was denied by an Indiana court.
Legal documents state that on April 4, 2007, Castro, 19 at the time, was upset that her boyfriend -- the baby's father -- had moved out of the family's home in Fort Wayne. She took the baby into a garage and cut her neck four times with a knife.

Police were summoned to the house by a passerby who came upon Castro's mother carrying the baby and running from the home. Officers found Castro covered in mud, water and blood. Castro told paramedics she had tried to drown herself in a creek, according to an appeals court decision document.

According to the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, the defense argued at trial that Castro had suffered from mental depression and became paranoid, thinking her family was trying to kill her and the baby.
The judge found that Castro still had the ability to know right from wrong.

Castro kept her imprisoned inside her own home, locking the doors from the inside, Caraballo said. He forbade her from using the telephone and, after warning her not to leave, tested her to see if she obeyed, Caraballo said.

"He would go creeping downstairs, not telling her that he's home, spying on her," Caraballo said. "See who she's calling. Next thing you know, he'll pop upstairs."

Castro, to frighten his wife, kept a mannequin wearing a dark wig propped up against a wall, and once when she was returning home with her arms full of groceries he jumped into the doorway with it, frightening her so badly she fell and hit her head, Caraballo said.

In 1996, Castro hit Figueroa for the last time, family members said. Figueroa ran outside with one of her sons, crying out to neighbors, just as the captive women did on Monday, Caraballo said.

"The neighbors went across the street to get her," Caraballo said. "And that was the last time she ever stepped in the house.

Michelle Knight: Recovery continues in the hospital

19 Action News Chief Investigator Carl Monday has new and disturbing information about one of the women rescued on Seymour Avenue.

Michelle Knight is still being treated for anxiety at Metro Health Medical Center. But Carl Monday reports that Michelle is hospitalized, for possible reconstructive surgery, to heal injuries suffered at the hands of her attacker during her decade in captivity.

Michelle's grandmother, Deborah Knight, confirmed the information, telling 19 Action News:  "When she was severely beaten, he had beat her so bad in the face, she has to have facial reconstruction, and she's lost hearing in one ear."

It appears Michelle Knight will have many challenges ahead in her life for healing to take place, both physically and mentally.  It's not only the years of living she's lost while held captive and the physical and mental abuse she endured, but the  lasting effects she may face the rest of her life.  I hope with time, care and help, she can regain her life and know happiness.

CLEVELAND The Ohio attorney general says tests have confirmed that alleged kidnapper Ariel Castro is the father of a 6-year-old girl rescued from his house with three women this week.

Attorney General Mike DeWine's office confirmed Castro's paternity in a news release Friday. DeWine says a sample of Castro's DNA was taken Thursday and forensic scientists worked through the night on the case.

The girl is the daughter of Amanda Berry, who authorities say was held for about a decade in Castro's house in Cleveland along with Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.

CLEVELAND -- During interrogation with police, Ariel Castro, the man charged with kidnapping and raping three women over roughly 10 years, referred to himself as "coldblooded," addicted to sex and unable to control his impulses WKYC Channel 3 News has learned.

With exacting detail, Castro recalled the abductions of Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, explaining how he met each victim and even what he was wearing that day, according to sources.

Meanwhile, in a suicide note discovered in his house by police, Castro blamed the girls for their abductions, writing that they were the ones who got into his car in the first place, the sources said. Castro did write that he wanted to give his money and possessions to the women if he was caught, the sources said.

The note appears to have been written in 2004, about the time police were investigating him on an apparently unrelated matter involving a child left on his school bus. In the note, he also mentioned his sex addiction, as well as having previously endured physical abuse as a child.

None of the abductions seemed planned, the sources said. Rather, they appeared to be crimes of opportunity.

Castro believed he would eventually be caught because he did not have "an exit plan" on how to deal with the three women and the girl he held captive in his Seymour Avenue home, the sources said. He just did not think it would be so soon.

In fact, Castro told police they had a chance to arrest him at one point but missed him, the sources said. It is unclear when that occurred.

In 2004, Cleveland Police knocked on Castro's door to investigate the case involving his school bus. A year later, a Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Deputy went to the home three times in an attempt to deliver a court summons.

Berry and DeJesus have returned home, while Knight remains hospitalized.

CLEVELAND The FBI says it did not recover human remains in its search of a Cleveland house where a man is accused of holding three women captive for a decade.
FBI spokeswoman Vicki Anderson says investigators have for now concluded their search at the house where the women were found earlier this week.

Anderson said Friday that agents took more than 200 items from the house, though she wouldn't discuss what was found.

Prosecutors said Thursday they may seek the death penalty against suspect Ariel Castro. Police say he impregnated one of his captives at least five times and made her miscarry by starving her and beating her.

DeWine's office confirmed Castro's paternity in a news release Friday. DeWine said a sample of Castro's DNA was taken Thursday and forensic scientists worked through the night on the case.

Officials also were entering the DNA profile into a national database to see if it links him to other crimes. The profile didn't match any other Ohio cases, but national results were pending as of Friday morning, DeWine said.

Michelle Knight, one of the three Cleveland women kidnapped and held captive for about a decade, has been discharged from the hospital where she had been receiving care.

In a statement emailed to reporters Friday, MetroHealth Medical Center said Knight had left the hospital and was asking for privacy.

“Michelle Knight is in good spirits and would like the community to know that she is extremely grateful for the outpouring of flowers and gifts. She is especially thankful for the Cleveland Courage Fund. She asks that everyone please continue to respect her privacy at this time,” the hospital said.

I have read so many different stories on Michelle. Prayers that she is getting support. It sounds like the SOB used her for a punching bag.

Just read an article that Michelle is going to live with Gina. She wants nothing to do with her mother. She does want to see her 13 yr old son who was taken away from her as an infant.

Not to be nasty about her mother but it seems that she did not do much to find Michelle. She went on to have another daughter Who is  10 yrs old. She moved and her neighbors and acquaintances never knew that she had a daughter who was missing! WTF!
Also, Michele's twin (?) brother was kicked out of the mothers house when he was 14. He did not know that his sister went missing until he heard it on the news. He has seen his sister.
I think that this mother senses that there could be a windfall for Michelle and this mom wants a piece of it...there is a reason why Michelle does not want to see this woman.all just my opinion.

Yeah, Cookie, there's a history there that's really sad. I don't know why her son was removed, but apparently the kidnapping took place shortly after that and apparently her Mother assumed she had run away. I can't help but think of the vigils held for the other 2 girls and how he made them watch them, and can't imagine how hard it was for Michelle to be aware there was no sign of anyone even looking for her. There were the big homecoming celebrations for the other two, and at first, nothing for Michelle.

I was listening to reporting on CNN earlier today and there's going to be a couple of interesting legal issues around this case. Castro's punishment has the potential to include the death penalty, if he's charged with, and convicted of, murder for the miscarriages he caused. However, that gets into pretty controversial territory. Some of the points discussed were:

If he is charged with murder for being responsible for miscarriage of a fetus, is there any implication there for abortion? Apparently Ohio has provision to charge murder for intentionally causing miscarriage against a pregnant woman, but there is a broader issue.

Can he be charged with kidnapping of the 6 year old, even though he is the Father? Does a rapist have parental rights?

CLEVELAND (CNN) — Seldom does a daughter use such harsh words to describe her own father.

Ariel Castro’s daughter called him “the most evil, vile, demonic criminal” she ever heard of during a CNN exclusive interview Thursday.

“He is dead to me,” Angie Gregg said of the father police say kidnapped, held captive, raped and beat three young women in Cleveland for about a decade.

She had known her “daddy” as a “friendly, caring, doting man.”

Now shocked and in disbelief, Gregg says she never wants to see him again.

“There will be no visits; there will be no phone calls,” she said. “He can never be daddy again. I have no sympathy for the man.”

As she mulled the accusations against him, she asked, “How could you?”

“I wonder this whole time, how he could be so good to us, but he (allegedly) took young women, little girls, someone else’s babies, away from these families and over the years never felt enough guilt to just give up and let them free.”

Gregg did not think anything out of the ordinary was going on in her childhood home.

All that changed Monday when Amanda Berry broke loose. Police freed her fellow captives Georgina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, divulging the secret locked up inside the house at 2207 Seymour Ave.

When she first heard the news about their captivity, Gregg said, she “just wanted to die.”

She had known Berry and DeJesus from her school days.

Peculiarities she noticed about her father over the years started falling into place in a new, grim light, and they are making her feel “horrified,” she said.

“This was going on right under my nose.”

An odd place to visit
When she came calling, “he would take forever to come to the door,” she said. He always had the house locked up tight.

Standing at a window, Castro would often give her a hand signal indicating to her to wait. Then he’d wave her around to the back door, not letting her in through the front of the house.

Once inside, visits were fun and cordial. Gregg, her husband and Castro “ate, looked at photos and listened to music,” she said. “He appeared to be happy to see us and never rushed for us to leave.”

At times, he would disappear from dinner and give no explanation for his absence.

The music was usually turned up loud, but Gregg thought this to be fitting since Castro was a musician.

Once she asked if she could go upstairs to see her childhood bedroom. Castro coaxed her out of the idea, telling her, “Oh, honey, there’s so much junk up there. You don’t want to go up there,” she said.

Again, she thought nothing of it, “besides him being a pack rat.”

The basement was always locked.

Here’s the timeline for the Figueroa-Castro relationship, as recounted by Reuters:

In 1989, Castro pleaded no contest and was given a year of probation after Figueroa made a domestic violence complaint against him.

On Dec. 26, 1993, Castro was arrested after he came home drunk and began beating Figueroa, police said. Police gathered a detailed report, but when a grand jury considered the incident, Figueroa said she could not remember the abuse.

By 1997, Figueroa had been granted full custody of her and Castro's four children. And by then, she was in a new relationship with another man.

In 2005, Figueroa sought an order of protection against Castro, saying he had threatened to kill her and her children during the previous year and had "abducted" the children.

But that happened about the same time that two of her daughters accused her new partner of sexual abuse. The charges may have come about at the prompting of Castro, some sources say, but they resulted in a sentence of supervision for her partner.

Figueroa decided not to proceed with the request for a protection order, and decided to move to Indiana with her children.

She died last year, with a coroner saying the death was caused by an accidental overdose of painkiller.

Could more be on the way? The FBI and Cleveland police announced Friday that they will take a closer look at two cold cases in light of this week’s events: the disappearances of 18-year-old Christina Adkins in 1995 and 14-year-old Ashley Summers in 2007. When Summers vanished, authorities believed she might be linked to Knight and Castro’s two other known victims, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus.

To be sure, officials cautioned that no new information about either woman has emerged—rather, news of the Castro case has spiked interest in other similar disappearances.

But another group is making a more explicit connection between Castro and a heinous unsolved crime, this one a murder. The Ohio State Public Defender’s Wrongful Conviction Project, a state program charged with absolving wrongfully convicted felons, has opened a probe into the former schoolbus driver. The organization is looking into whether 52-year-old Castro may have been involved in the 1981 kidnapping, rape, and murder of 14-year-old Tammy Seals, who was found dead near the same neighborhood where Castro, then in his early 20s, was living at the time. Orlando “Chico” Morales was convicted of the crime 32 years ago, but the organization strongly believes he is innocent.

On a news report on either HLN or CNN they discussed that issue.. They said that only some states have specific laws about a rapists rights to a child born from the rape. Ohio isn't one of those (or so they said)

They then discussed how they could use the fact that a rapist can't benefit from their crime but that they would probably more likely drop that charge of kidnapping (for the 6 year old) since they have so many other charges that will be coming and it will be a reach in relation to Ohio's current laws.

Michelle Knight May Need Facial Reconstruction Surgery, Grandmother Says

Michelle Knight, one of the 3 women held captive in a Cleveland home for a decade, was released from the hospital Friday.

But Knight has suffered such severe injuries that she may need facial reconstruction surgery, her grandmother, Deborah Knight, told CBS news.

"When she was severely beaten, he beat her so badly in the face that she has to have facial reconstruction and she's lost hearing in one ear," she told CBS.

Knight told police that her alleged captor, Ariel Castro, repeatedly raped her and caused her to miscarry at least 5 times over the years she spent trapped in his home by starving her and punching her in the abdomen, Reuters reported.

"Michelle Knight is in good spirits and would like the community to know that she is extremely grateful for the outpouring of flowers and gifts," the Metro Health hospital wrote on its Facebook page earlier Friday, along with an appeal to respect Knight's privacy.

(CNN) -- When Ariel Castro was arrested last week on charges of kidnapping and raping three women for more than a decade in his Cleveland home, police also detained his two brothers, showing their mugshots to the world.

Police released Pedro and Onil Castro a few days later, saying neither man had anything to do with the alleged abductions and torture of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.

The men, both in their 50s, are now in hiding in an undisclosed location, as are other family members, including their 71-year-old mother. The brothers say their homes have had rocks thrown through the windows -- one of them was broken into -- and they have been receiving death threats online.

In an exclusive interview with CNN, which took place outside Cleveland, the Castro brothers say they are grateful the three girls are finally free and safe, but they are haunted by missing clues and hunted by the media.

Without knowing anything that you don't Cookie, that's what I came up with too. I figured that if the girls didn't know the brothers, and they weren't blindfolded while being abused, then they could clear them.

Cleveland (CNN) -- Bicycles. Barbed wire. A chain.

Those are of just some of the items found in kidnapping suspect Ariel Castro's Cleveland yard, according to photographs taken over the weekend by a neighbor and obtained by CNN.

The neighbor asked not to be identified and said that he took the photographs because he wants people to know what's there.

The images show a cluttered yard.

On Monday, CNN affiliate WKYC posted jail logs showing his activity since Thursday.

Castro is on suicide prevention watch, standard procedure for high-profile inmates. He cannot interact with other inmates and does not have their privileges. Castro is checked on every 10 minutes.

Mostly, the logs show him doing mundane activities -- "resting on mat," "eating chow," and "making Kool-Aid."

Though some entries stand out.

(CBS/WOIO) The Cleveland dog warden is holding three canines discovered in the home and car of accused Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro, CBS affiliate WOIO reports.

The warden, John Baird, told WOIO that a Chihuahua was found by police in Castro's car as he was arrested, and two other dogs that appear to be terrier-poodle mixes were found in his home.

The dogs appeared to be in good health, but needed heavy grooming, Baird told the station.

The FBI reportedly asked Baird to hold the dogs in case kidnapping victims Amanda Berry, 27, Gina DeJesus, 23, and Michelle Knight, 32, wanted the animals.

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WKYC) -- Accused kidnapper Ariel Castro is expected to undergo a psychiatric evaluation this week, and could be moved off the mental health floor of the Cuyahoga County jail depending on the results.

Jail guards are required to record their observations of Castro every 10 minutes because he's on suicide watch.

Records the Investigator Tom Meyer obtained show that Castro spends much of his time resting, sleeping, eating, and looking out the window of his small cell.

One guard observed him walking around his cell naked on the same day that he asked a guard for the time and for the temperature outside.

Castro has been in isolation for only a few weeks and already he's getting a taste of what the three women experienced inside his Seymour Avenue home. Police say they were allowed outside only twice in the 10 years they were held captive.

OLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A man accused of holding three women captive in his run-down home in Cleveland for a decade and fathering a child with one of them has been indicted on 329 charges including murder, kidnapping and rape, prosecutors said.

A Cuyahoga County grand jury returned the indictment Friday against Ariel Castro, a former school bus driver fired last fall.

Castro, 52, is accused of kidnapping Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight and holding them captive along with a 6-year-old girl he fathered with Berry.

The grand jury charged Castro with two counts of aggravated murder related to one act, saying he purposely caused the unlawful termination of one of the women's pregnancies. Castro also was indicted on 139 counts of rape, 177 counts of kidnapping, seven counts of gross sexual imposition, three counts of felonious assault and one count of possession of criminal tools.

Castro's attorneys have said he would plead not guilty to any indictment. Castro, during his brief arraignment last month, tried to hide his face, tucking his chin inside his shirt collar, and did not speak.

Castro is being held on $8 million bail. He has been taken off suicide prevention watch, jail officials said this week.

(Reuters) - The Ohio man accused of kidnapping three women and holding them captive in his Cleveland home for a decade will plead "not guilty" to several hundred charges that also include rape and aggravated murder, his attorney said on Saturday.

Former school bus driver Ariel Castro was indicted on Friday on 329 criminal counts in connection with the imprisonment of Gina DeJesus, 23, Michelle Knight, 32, and Amanda Berry, 27. The women were freed from Castro's house on May 6.

He is charged with aggravated murder in the assault and impregnation of Knight between November 2006 and February 2007 and forcing her to miscarry, according to the indictment.

Castro, 52, is being held in jail on an $8 million bond and is to be arraigned on the charges next week.

"The indictment is being reviewed and a ‘not guilty' plea will be entered at the scheduled arraignment," attorney Jaye M. Schlachet told Reuters.

The indictment issued by a Cuyahoga County grand jury includes 139 counts of rape and 177 counts of kidnapping. It includes some details on how the women were restrained during their ordeal, including that Castro at one point taped the legs and mouth of one of the victims and chained her to a pole in the basement, with a motorcycle helmet on her head.

The indictment covers only the period from August 2002, when Knight disappeared, until February 2007, and more charges are expected.
The aggravated murder charge stems from Knight's fourth pregnancy. According to a police report, Castro caused Knight to suffer at least five miscarriages by starving her and beating her in the abdomen.

Prosecutors said a committee will consider seeking the death penalty as a possible sentence after a complete indictment is finalized.

Schlachet said the death penalty is not warranted in Castro's case and should not be used to pressure his client into a taking plea bargain in lieu of a trial.

Ohio is one of 38 states to have a fetal homicide law, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Legal experts said the murder case will be complicated by a lack of physical evidence of the miscarriage and medical records.

"It would be unprecedented to pursue the death penalty for an alleged death of a fetus, without the death of the mother," Schlachet said. "We remain hopeful that the prosecutor's office and the public understand and agree that a death penalty should never be used as leverage to attempt to obtain a plea bargain."

CLEVELAND (AP) — A man accused of holding three women captive in his home for about a decade pleaded not guilty Wednesday, and the defense hinted that it would like to avoid trial with a plea agreement if the death penalty was ruled out.

Attorney Craig Weintraub addressed the death penalty issue after his client, 52-year-old Ariel Castro, pleaded not guilty to hundreds of charges including rape and kidnapping.

Castro, dressed in an orange jail outfit with his hands and ankles shackled and a full dark beard grown in jail, kept his chin tucked on his chest through the brief court appearance. He didn't speak or glance at his two attorneys standing by his side.

Weintraub said the defense was working to avoid an "unnecessary trial" involving the death penalty. Current charges Castro faces involving an alleged forced miscarriage don't include death penalty specifications, but the prosecutor says that's under review.

"Mr. Castro currently faces hundreds of years in prison with the current charges," Weintraub said after the arraignment. "It is our hope that we can continue to work toward a resolution to avoid having an unnecessary trial about aggravated murder and the death penalty."

Joe Frolik, spokesman for Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty, said the defense remarks were under review.

The 329-count indictment returned Friday covered only the period from August 2002, when the first of the women disappeared, to February 2007. More charges could be filed.

A statement issued on behalf of the women said days like the arraignment "are not easy" and added: "We are hopeful for a just and prompt resolution. We have great faith in the prosecutor's office and the court."

(Reuters) - Authorities plan to present evidence next week to a grand jury as they seek to bring more charges against the former Cleveland bus driver accused of holding three women captive in his home, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty said Wednesday.

Cleveland kidnapping suspect competent to stand trial

Ariel Castro, charged with holding three Cleveland women captive for more than a decade, is mentally competent to stand trial, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Court-appointed psychiatrists, who evaluated Castro for two hours, found Castro competent and capable of assisting his attorneys with his defense, Cuyahoga County Judge Michael Russo said Wednesday. Castro answered "yes" when the judge asked him whether he understood the purpose of the evaluation and the court proceedings.

The judge denied Castro's request to see the elementary-school-aged child he fathered with one of the captive women.

"I won't be allowing that, not during the pendency of this case," Russo said. "I just don't think that would be appropriate."

The judge said Castro's adult children could visit him in jail if they wished. Castro is being held on $8 million bail.

CLEVELAND — A man accused of holding three women captive for a decade was scolded repeatedly by a judge to raise his head and open his eyes in a brief court appearance where he pleaded not guilty Wednesday to nearly 1,000 counts of kidnap, rape and other crimes.

For the most part, Ariel Castro, 53, responded to the judge's questions with one-word answers as he faced charges that included 512 counts of kidnapping and 446 counts of rape.

The charges returned Friday by a grand jury against Castro expanded on a 329-count indictment filed earlier that covered only part of the time frame of the alleged crimes. He previously pleaded not guilty to that indictment.

Castro has been jailed since his arrest on May 6 shortly after the women escaped to freedom.

The judge continued his bond at $8 million.

Besides kidnapping and rape, the new 977-count indictment also charges him with seven counts of gross sexual imposition, six counts of felonious assault, three counts of child endangerment and one count of possessing criminal tools.

He previously was charged with two counts of aggravated murder related to one act, charges alleging that he purposely caused the unlawful termination of the pregnancy of one of the women.

Castro is scheduled for trial on Aug. 5, a date that could be delayed if the defense requests more preparation time. His legal team has hinted Castro would plead guilty if the death penalty was off the table.

Weintraub said after the arraignment that he didn't expect a trial postponement.

"We have a trial date of Aug. 5, so either we're going to have a plea or we're going to trial Aug. 5," he said.

The prosecution has said it would be ready for that date.

The Cleveland man accused of holding three women captive in his home for about a decade agreed to plead guilty in a deal to avoid the death penalty.

In exchange, prosecutors said 53-year-old Ariel Castro would be sentenced to life without parole plus 1,000 years.

Castro had been charged in a 977-count indictment. He had been scheduled for trial Aug. 5 on allegations that include repeatedly restraining the women and punching and starving one woman until she had a miscarriage. The former school bus driver also was charged with hundreds of counts of kidnapping and rape, plus assault and other counts.

Castro was in court Friday morning to enter the guilty plea. When asked if he understood he would never be released from prison, Castro said: "I do understand that, your honor."

He added, "I knew I was pretty much going to get the book thrown at me." Castro answered the judge clearly and made eye contact. During an earlier court appearance he had to be repeatedly asked by the judge to keep his head up and eyes open.

The deal comes more than a month after a statement issued on behalf of the women said they were "hopeful for a just and prompt resolution" and had "great faith in the prosecutor's office and the court."

The sticking point on a plea deal had been whether the prosecutor would rule out the death penalty. The Cuyahoga County prosecutor had kept that issue under review.

At one point when asked by the judge if he had any questions, Castro said he wanted to say that he "was a victim as a child and it just kept going."

(CNN) -- The Ohio man who imprisoned three women in his Cleveland home for a decade will speak at length during his sentencing Thursday, delivering a statement that his sister promises will allow people to see "the other side of Ariel Castro."
Castro pleaded guilty last week to 937 counts, including murder and kidnapping, in a deal that dropped a possible death penalty in exchange for life in prison plus 1,000 years.
He'll give a rather lengthy statement, explaining his life and who he really is, his sister, Marisol Alicea, told CNN on Wednesday night.
"(People will) see the other side of Ariel Castro ... not the monster that everyone thinks he is," she said, adding that she was in no way defending her brother.
"He must pay for what he did."
Alicea said she doesn't plan on attending the sentencing with others in her family, fearing the evidence will be too graphic.
The sentencing hearing is expected to last hours and include witness testimony and evidence, a Cuyahoga County court source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told CNN.
Prosecutors want to make sure there's a record going forward in case of a future appeal, should Castro want to try to get out of prison, said the source who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. Prosecutors also want the court and the public to understand the impact Castro's actions had on his victims and the community.

I found it very interesting when the judge brought it to the attention of everyone that he had a girlfriend without a violent relationship so that goes to show he made a conscious decision to mistreat these three women.

Ariel Castro, 53, apologized to his victims in a rambling, defiant statement before he was sentenced. He blamed a sex addiction, his former wife and even the FBI for not thoroughly investigating the abductions while claiming most of the sex was consensual and that the women were never tortured.
"These people are trying to paint me as a monster," he said. "I'm not a monster. I'm sick."
Just before the sentencing, one of three women he kidnapped stood within feet of Castro and told him his life was over.
"You took 11 years of my life away and I have got it back," said Michelle Knight. "I spent 11 years in hell. Now your hell is just beginning."

Judge Michael Russo dismissed Castro's claims that the women lived a happy life with him.
"I'm not sure there's anyone in America that would agree with you," he said.

The judge told Castro that there was no place in the world for people who enslave others. "These women never gave up hope," Russo said. "In fact, they prevailed."

Bedroom windows were boarded shut from the inside with heavy closet doors and doorknobs had been removed and replaced with multiple locks, he said. The house was divided in ways to make it more secure and to hide the existence of rooms, he said.
Burke also testified that Castro would occasionally pay his victims after raping them. But he then would require them to pay him if they wanted something special from the store.

Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Detective Dave Jacobs said he talked with Castro a few days after the women escaped and that Castro said, "I knew what I did was wrong."
A police officer who helped rescue the women said one was reluctant to come out of her room even when she saw the officers. They were scared even after they were taken out of the house and quickly began sharing details about the horrors they went through, saying that they had been starved and beaten.
"They were just shouting out a lot of things," said Cleveland police officer Barb Johnson. She described the women as thin, pale and scared.

CLEVELAND Demolition has begun on the Cleveland house where three women were held captive and raped over a decade.
The house is being torn down as part of a deal that spared Ariel Castro a possible death sentence. He was sentenced last week to life in prison plus 1,000 years.

One of the women imprisoned there, Michelle Knight, showed up early Wednesday before the demolition began. She made a brief statement and released some balloons.

Family members of another victim, Gina DeJesus, watched from across the street as workers started demolishing the house. While DeJesus wasn't at the demolition, one of her aunts, Peggy Arida, was in the cab of the equipment that first struck the house.

"It just felt great, knowing that it's coming down," Arida told CBS Cleveland affiliate WOIO-TV.

Prosecutors say Castro cried when he signed over the house deed and mentioned his "many happy memories" there with the women. The women escaped May 6 when one of them broke part of a door and yelled for help.

Google Earth has already blurred out a satellite image of the house, before the demolition even began.

The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer on Tuesday reported that the Cuyahoga Land Bank expects to complete the demolition of Ariel Castro's house in one day and shred all the building materials.

The land bank acquired Castro's home on Seymour Avenue last week, and the house's electricity was turned off on Monday after his family and friends removed personal items from it, including photographs and musical instruments.

Plans for what will replace the house on the site haven't been made public.

The land bank's president, Gus Frangos, told the newspaper that the organization is trying to keep away scavengers who might try to sell the rubble as what is known as "murderabilia."

In 2011, a website that sells items related to high-profile crimes put on sale 1-gram packages of soil from the home of Cleveland serial killer Anthony Sowell before a city agency razed the house.

Sowell was convicted that year of killing 11 women and was sentenced to death. His case is under appeal.

As the last part of the house fell to the ground, a church on the corner of Seymour rang its bells to mark the demolition and healing for the survivors.

Authorities from the Department of Corrections released this statement:

Inmate Ariel Castro was found hanging in his cell this evening at 9:20 pm at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient. He was housed in protective custody which means he was in a cell by himself and rounds are required every 30 minutes at staggered intervals.  He was in protective custody because of the notoriety of his case, meaning he was checked every 30 minutes, but was not on suicide watch, Smith said.

Kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro's apparent prison suicide may deprive his victims of a vital sense that justice has been done, a leading psychologist said Wednesday.
"Going forward now these girls are going to have to find a way of healing without a sense of justice," said Dr. Linda Papadopoulos, a U.K.-based psychologist and author. "We want the sense of justice when we heal. Sometimes we have to heal without it, and sadly that is what they will have to do."
She added: "He decided his fate, something they were never ever ever able to do for themselves. He had ultimate control. To some extent this was in a way his last slap to their faces --  'I’ve got this over you'."

Survivors of such experiences may also feel great grief, said Eva Usadi, a New York City-based therapist specializing in first responder and combat trauma. 
"The grief comes from there being no real justice," she said.  "That’s what victims want even when the perpetrators go to jail for all their lives. But, on some level, there is no way to regain what’s been truly lost, which is innocence, a sense of the world being safe. And so this produces deep grief."

While Castro’s death may make his victims anger and grief, they may also feel relief, according to Dr. Nihara Krause, a British clinical psychologist who specializes in the effects of trauma.
“I think a lot of it just depends on the person and on their coping techniques,” she said. It could feel like “a huge positive in terms of an immediate relief … Sometimes it can positively make people free to remember without threat."
Krause advised survivors of this sort of trauma to “use every strategy to get it out. Write down whatever you’re remembering or express it to somebody."
She added: "But most importantly, remind yourself that whatever you’re thinking of are memories, they’re not real – that’s the most important thing.  That’s part of trauma, you tend to experience it as if it were real. They are memories, no more than that.”

Castro was in protective custody in a cell by himself, but was not on suicide watch at the prison south of Columbus. Corrections officers were supposed to check on him every 30 minutes at staggered intervals, explained JoEllen Smith, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

Prison officials were huddling this morning reviewing the incident.

“A thorough review of this incident is underway,” Smith said in a statement last night.

It was the 7th suicide in an Ohio prison this year and the 35th since 2008.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio today called for a full investigation of the circumstances of Castro’s death.

“As horrifying as Mr. Castro’s crimes may be, the state has a responsibility to ensure his safety from himself and others,” ACLU Executive Director Christine Link said. “Questions remain whether Mr. Castro was properly screened for suicide risk and mental illness. Prisons officials must address these issues, not only to fully account for how Mr. Castro was able to commit suicide, but also to prevent this from occurring again.”

Link said prisons should take the opportunity to “assess the entire system to ensure those most in need are provided treatment” for mental health issues.

Tim Schafer, operations director with the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, saw many suicides during his years as a corrections officer. Schafer said he had no knowledge about how Castro hanged himself, but since most prisons cells by design don’t have beams or pipes overhead, inmates find other ways.

“Most cases they’re not dangling from the ceiling. They will tie a bed sheet around the window bar and around their neck, stand and then drop. It usually snaps their neck. A lot of times they end up in a kneeling position. You might not even see them at first, especially if the lights are low.”

Schafer said corrections officers are often scapegoated in suicides, but they may not be at fault because prison staffing cuts over a number of years has increased the inmate to officer ratio to 7.3 to 1.

“Being overcrowded and understaffed is a dangerous thing for everybody involved, whether you’r e staff, offender or taxpayer.”

On Aug. 1. Castro was sentenced on Aug. 1 to life in prison plus 1,000 years after pleading guilty to 937 counts that included kidnapping and rape.

The sentence imposed by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Michael Russo followed a rambling 16-minute statement in which Castro blamed his actions on a sexual and pornography addiction that led to compulsive behavior.

“I do want to let you know there was harmony in that home,” the former school-bus driver told a courtroom packed with media members as well as Knight. “I was a good person.”

But Knight, as well as family members of the other victims, gave a strikingly different account of their years of captivity.

“I spent 11 years in hell,” Knight said. “Now your hell is just beginning. I will overcome all that happened, but you will face hell for eternity.”

Prosecutors had agreed to take a possible death-penalty charge off the table in exchange for Castro’s plea.

"These degenerate molesters are cowards," Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty said in a statement. "They con and capture vulnerable children. This man couldn't take, for even a month, a small portion of what he had dished out for more than a decade."

"Let this be a message to other child kidnappers: There will be a heavy price to pay when you are caught," he said. "You won't enjoy the captive side of the bars."

Castro's attorney Jaye Schlachet told ABC News' Cleveland affiliate WEWS-TV that the defense team had requested for a forensic psychologist to evaluate Castro when he was in the county jail and the state's prison reception center.

"Local and state authorities denied our requests," Schlachet said in the statement. "There is an institutional failure beyond Ariel Castro and the citizens of Ohio are entitled to something better. It's just sad."

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said focus should remain on the survivors.

Sometimes, true justice — as opposed to the courtroom kind — arrives so quickly that we are taken by surprise.

The presumed suicide of Ariel Castro, who imprisoned three women for about a decade in his Cleveland home, is a perfect example. His apparently self-inflicted death is the coda to a case that might have dragged on for years, but instead flowed swiftly through the system to this ultimately satisfying conclusion.

Did Castro kill himself because his conscience got the better of him?

Doubtful.

In court, when he had the opportunity to come clean, he took virtually no responsiblity for his grotesque crimes.  “I’m not a monster,” he said. “I’m sick.”

He had been victimized as a child, he said. He had become an unwilling sex and pornography addict. He had only beat his first wife “because she wouldn’t quiet down.”

Contrary to accounts of rape in the journals kept by his three victims, he maintained that sex with them was consensual, that there was “harmony” in the home, and that he never beat or tortured anyone.

“I feel like the FBI let these girls down,” he said.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said Wednesday that it would investigate Castro's death. That's appropriate and right, given the circumstances.

But we already know one important thing. Ariel Castro didn’t kill himself out of remorse. He overdosed on self-pity.

The body of Castro, 53, was turned over on Friday morning to a funeral home selected by the family, Franklin County coroner Dr. Jan Gorniak told the Los Angeles Times. Gorniak had conducted the autopsy on Castro and ruled he had committed suicide by hanging.

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro made a phone call to the mother of one of his victims, saying her daughter was still alive and "she's my wife now," according to interrogation tapes obtained by NBC TV and broadcast on Friday.

Castro, who committed suicide on Tuesday by hanging himself with a bed sheet in his cell at an Ohio prison, told investigators after his arrest in May that he used the cell phone of victim Amanda Berry to call her mother, the tapes showed. He then quickly hung up before hearing any response.

It was unclear when Castro claimed to have made the call. Berry disappeared in 2003 and was held captive in Castro's house until May 6 when he left a bedroom door unlocked, allowing her to reach the front of the house, alert neighbors and escape.

(CLEVELAND) — A judge says the name of a girl fathered by a Cleveland man who held her mother captive for a decade will be deleted from the public court record.

The decision by Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County Common Pleas Judge Michael Russo involves the daughter of kidnapper Ariel Castro and one of his three victims, who gave birth on Christmas 2006. The Plain Dealer reports the prosecutor asked to have the child’s name deleted from court records to protect her privacy.

The child’s mother, Amanda Berry, kicked out the door of Castro’s house in May and yelled for help, freeing herself, the 6-year-old girl and two other women. DNA evidence confirmed that Castro was the girl’s father.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (KABC) -- A new report suggests that it's possible that Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro died during auto-erotic asphyxiation, not suicide.


According to a report from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, the 53-year-old Castro was found with his pants and underwear pulled down to his ankles.

The state forwarded those facts to police to consider the possibility of auto-erotic asphyxiation, whereby individuals achieve sexual satisfaction by briefly choking themselves into unconsciousness.

It was also revealed in the report that prison guards failed to check on Castro in the hours before he killed himself on Sept. 3 and falsified observation logs.

CLEVELAND, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Increased scrutiny of missing
person cases in a Cleveland neighborhood following the arrest of
kidnapper Ariel Castro led to charges against a neighbor for the
murders of two women in the 1990s, the FBI said on Friday.

Elias Acevedo, Sr., 49, was charged late Thursday with the
kidnapping, rape and murder of his 30-year-old neighbor, Pamela
Pemberton, found strangled in 1994, and another woman believed
to be Christina Adkins, a pregnant 18-year-old who disappeared
in 1995. He also is charged with the rape of two young girls.

"Because the public became more aware and investigators were
determined and relentless, people were re-interviewed and there
was an increased interest in these missing person cases," FBI
spokeswoman Vicki Anderson said.

Acevedo, who lived on the same block as Castro, was arrested
in June at his Seymour Avenue residence after police questioned
Castro's neighbors and discovered that Acevedo was a convicted
sex offender who had failed to report his current address.

Acevedo became a suspect in the Adkins and Pemberton murders
after the FBI re-examined the disappearance of other missing
women from the Seymour Avenue neighborhood in the aftermath of
Castro's arrest, according to a statement from the Cuyahoga
County prosecutor's office.

Cleveland's Seymour Avenue garnered international attention
after three women - Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina
DeJesus - were found with Berry's 6-year-old daughter in a
dilapidated home owned by 53-year-old Castro. The women had been
missing for about a decade - Castro had fathered the child.

While incarcerated, Acevedo's DNA was linked to a 1993 rape
that occurred near the location where Pemberton's body was
found. The FBI then linked Acevedo to the 1995 disappearance of
Adkins, last seen in the vicinity of Seymour Avenue.

Acevedo has confessed to the murders, which means
authorities will not seek the death penalty, according to Joe
Frolik, spokesman for the Cuyahoga County prosecutor's office.

Acevedo led authorities to a spot near a highway where he
had put Adkins' body in a manhole 18 years ago, according to the
FBI and prosecutors.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office is in the
process of positively identifying what are believed to be
Adkins' remains after her identification card was found nearby.

Castro pleaded guilty to 937 charges and was found hanged in
his prison cell just a month into a life sentence. His death was
ruled a suicide by the Franklin County coroner but an
investigation into his death by prison officials has called into
question whether he died accidentally while performing a sex
act.

The indictment against Acevedo includes 115 kidnapping
charges and more than 173 charges of rape involving Adkins,
Pemberton and the repeated rapes over a period of months of two
girls, starting when they were 8 and 11 years old. He was also
charged in the 1993 rape of his brother's common-law wife.

(CNN) -- Six months after she was freed from the "house of horrors" where Ariel Castro held her captive for 11 years, Cleveland kidnapping victim Michelle Knight is speaking out.
In an exclusive interview with Dr. Phil McGraw scheduled to air Tuesday and Wednesday, Knight describes a moment when Castro trapped her in a room and tied her up with an orange extension cord.
"I was tied up like a fish," she said, "an ornament on the wall."
In excerpts of the interview posted on the show's YouTube channel, Knight says Castro taped her mouth shut with duct tape. She tells McGraw she once picked a lock to try to escape, drawing an ominous warning from Castro: "Now you're gonna be punished."

Knight, 32, was 21 years old when she was reported missing.
Before their rescue, Knight's disappearance generated less publicity and attention than the kidnappings of Berry and DeJesus, and a level of mystery still surrounds her case.
But since their rescue, Knight hasn't shied away from speaking out.
"After 11 years, I am finally being heard, and it's liberating," she said in a powerful statement at Castro's sentencing describing the abuse she endured.
"You took 11 years of my life away, and I have got it back. I spent 11 years in hell, and now your hell is just beginning," she told Castro. "I will overcome all this that happened, but you will face hell for eternity."
When crews demolished the 1,400-square-foot house where Castro held them captive, Knight was there, handing out yellow balloons to onlookers.
She said she was at the demolition site in part to remind relatives of abducted children that all is not necessarily lost.
"I want the people out there to know -- including the mothers -- that they can have strength, they can have hope, and their child will come back," she said.
Since their release, accounts have depicted Knight as someone who cared for the other victims during their captivity while also enduring great suffering herself.
A family friend of one of the victims said this year that Castro used Knight as his main "punching bag."
The friend said Castro hit Knight with a variety of objects, including hand weights. She has suffered vision loss, joint and muscle damage, and other problems from her time in captivity.
According to an initial incident report obtained by CNN, Knight said she became pregnant at least five times while in Castro's home.
When that happened, she told investigators, Castro "starved her for at least two weeks, then he repeatedly punched her in the stomach until she miscarried."
Knight said Castro ordered her to deliver Berry's child, according to a police source familiar with the investigation.

Acevedo also was charged with rape and sexual assault involving attacks on minors, some dating back more than 25 years. He folded his cuffed handed together as Judge Michael Donnelly read the terms of the plea deal and explained it.

Acevedo's case is the latest among a group of high-profile cases involving violence against women in and around Cleveland.

Authorities re-examined the disappearances of women in the city following the escape of three women held captive for a decade in the run-down home of Ariel Castro.

The prosecutor's office said Acevedo most recently lived about a block away from Castro, who kidnapped the three women when they were in their teens or early 20s, imprisoned them in his home and raped them repeatedly, fathering a child with one of them.

CLEVELAND -- The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's office says Jeremi J. Alicea, of Bedford, has been charged with 22 counts related to child pornography.
Alicea is the nephew of Ariel Castro, the man who kidnapped and raped three women over the course of 10 years. The girls escaped last year and Castro hanged himself in prison.
Alicea, 26, who turns 27 on Friday, was charged with 21 counts of pandering sexually-oriented matter involving a minor and one count of possessing criminal tool, according to court records.
His arraignment is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. February 13 on the 12th Floor of the Justice Center.
Court records show that the alleged crimes occurred September 17 and October 8 and the "criminal tool" charge is for a laptop he owns.

A Wednesday statement from attorneys for Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus calls Rivers' remark hurtful and shocking. The attorneys say the women have endured painful media attention and the comment is "a new low" that warrants an apology.

CLEVELAND — Ariel Castro deliberately left doors to his house unlocked for months preceding the day three women he had held captive for more than a decade escaped.

“He intentionally became much more negligent in the house about locking the door and keeping them inside,” Craig Weintraub, one of two attorneys representing Ariel Castro, revealed in an interview with WKYC.

Castro explained that he had become attached to the daughter he had with Berry. Weintraub said Castro dismissed any thoughts of killing the three women because of his relationship with the child.

“He didn’t have the courage to go to the police department and surrender, and the only way this was going to happen is if he was negligent and allowed them to leave the house and be able to find a way out while he was gone a few hours,” Weintraub said.

Castro told Weintraub that he knew he would spend the rest of his life in prison. Weintraub said he wasn’t the least bit surprised Castro killed himself because he says Castro demonstrated suicidal tendencies in the Cuyahoga County Jail and when he was transferred to Lorain Correctional.

“There weren’t any cemeteries that would take his remains. They certainly don’t want to be subject to vandalism,” Weintraub said.

Weintraub and his co-counsel, Jay Schlachet, were the subject of death threats but have no regrets taking on the case.

Weintraub says a number of Castro’s family members have been verbally abused and harassed during the past year. Castro’s son, Anthony, changed his name after his home was ransacked and profanity was scrawled on his front door.
