Sheriff’s Dept encourages teens, families to attend safety seminar

FALLBROOK – In light of the recent tragedies involving North County teens, the Fallbrook Substation of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Dept. will host an informative Personal Safety Seminar on Thursday evening, April 8 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Fallbrook High School’s Bob Burton Theatre, 2400 S. Stagecoach Lane.

Tips and guidelines on personal safety will be presented by Corporal Debbie Eglin, a core defensive tactics instructor for the San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Training Center.

Fallbrook Sheriff’s Substation Commander Lt. Phil Brust said the seminar has been organized in response to the tragedies of Chelsea King and Amber Dubois. While it is especially valuable for teens, the seminar is open to the public and designed for all ages.

Surprise Hearing in Gardner Case Today

A status hearing is scheduled for John Gardner Friday afternoon, but it’s not clear if the subject of the hearing is tied to recently uncovered documents that explain what detectives found at his home.

Search warrant documents posted online show investigators removed a number of items from John Gardner’s home on March 9, 2010 including shovels, pick axes, digging tools and articles of clothing -- just two days after police found the body of missing teen Amber Dubois.

Friday's status conference was rescheduled from 2 p.m. to 2.30 p.m. Friday, according to San Diego County District Attorney spokesperson Paul Levikow. It’s not clear if Gardner will attend the hearing.

Officials are not releasing details about the subject of the hearing. Superior Court Judge David Danielsen issued a gag order in March. Gardner was not due back in court until Aug. 4, for a preliminary hearing.

NBC San Diego will live stream the hearing at 2.30 p.m.
