Not a good feeling at all.  Hopefully, the person responsible for this will come to their senses and release her.  Prayers to her parents.

Anchorage police say surveillance video shows that a man kidnapped 18-year-old Samantha Koenig at the Midtown coffee stand where she was finishing up work Wednesday night.

Police did not release a detailed description of the man Friday other than saying he appeared to be wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt and possibly a baseball cap. Koenig is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, 140 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. Markiewicz said the man was significantly taller.

Koenig's boyfriend, Dwayne, planned to pick up Koenig after her shift ended at 8 p.m., said James Koenig, her father. Markiewicz said the boyfriend was delayed by work.

"By the time he arrived, she was gone," Markiewicz said.

All the cash in the coffee stand also went missing when Koenig vanished, said Common Grounds owner Michelle Duncan. The door was locked and the windows boarded and locked, which is normal closing procedure, Duncan said. But what's unusual is that the security alarm wasn't set and nothing was cleaned, Duncan said.

Surveillance video shows an armed man wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt walk up to the turquoise Common Grounds Coffee shack in the parking lot of the Alaska Club at 630 E. Tudor Road, a detective said. He approached at about 8 p.m., near the end of Samantha's barista shift, and was somehow able to get inside the coffee stand, police said. The man appeared to force Koenig to leave with him on foot, heading east. Cash was missing from the stand, the owner said.

No one has reported seeing Samantha since.

James Koenig said his hunch is that Samantha knew the person or people responsible for her disappearance.

"But I can't give out any names," he said. "The police, I'm sure, have investigated it and I'm sure are questioning these people daily."

He refused to elaborate.

Court records show Samantha Koenig filed for a protective order against a man in November. She didn't show up in court for a hearing related to the case and the order was never issued, court records show.

Such an order would prohibit the accused from contacting the petitioner or coming within a certain number of feet of her.

Samantha Koenig's boyfriend, who would only provide his first name, Dwayne, said he and Samantha started dating about 10 months ago. They met while attending West High School, he said.

There are no new details in the investigation since Friday, when APD called it an abduction. Samantha's family is offering more than $12,500 as a reward for her return and is hoping to sell green ribbons, Samantha's favorite color, to raise the reward money.

My daughter and husband are traveling between our place and Anchorage today.   I made sure that I loaded them up with flyers, with instructions to post them between here and there.  I am praying so hard that Samantha is found safe.

Authorities charged three men and a juvenile with breaking into a Snead Ferry home Christmas Eve.

Christopher L. Bird, 22, of N.C. 172, Dion J. Deloney, 23, of Winter Place, Daniel J. Gibson, 17, of Puller Drive, and an unidentified minor were charged Thursday by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Department with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen property and conspiracy.

Bird was additionally charged with communicating threats and resisting a police officer because of alleged behavior during the investigation.

While waiting at the Sheriff’s Department to be questioned by detectives, Bird is said to have told Sheriff’s Deputy Edwin Roman, “I will put the handcuffs around your neck and choke you…”

He is also accused of kicking a door and having to be forced to remain inside an interview room, according to warrants.

His secured bond was set by Mitchell for $25,000.

(CBS/AP) ANCHORAGE, Alaska. - The father of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, who police say was abducted at gunpoint from her espresso stand says the reward for information that leads to her safe return has grown to $41,000. James Koenig had originally been offering a $12,500 reward.

Surveillance video captured a man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt somehow getting into the coffee stand, police say. He appears to be armed and it seems he forces Koenig to leave with him on foot, heading east.

ABC news reports all of the coffee stand's cash was also missing.

Police have not released the video, which is causing frustration for concerned Anchorage residents who want help finding the young woman. However, police say releasing it wouldn't help solve the case.

"If his face was shown, don't you think that would have been the first thing out of our mouths? 'Look at this video! Who is this man?' " Lt. Dave Parker, a police spokesman, said.

Detectives were working leads on Sunday, he said. But police lost valuable time early on. The coffee stand reported Koenig as missing around noon of the next day. By the time police suspected an abduction, snow had covered up tracks and scents, Parker said.

And, as far as the video goes...maybe it doesn't show his face, but what about his mannerisms and body movements.  Those might be familiar to someone.

I was wondering the same thing KittyMom.  I'm wondering if there's more to the viideo then LE wants to let on.  Maybe his face isn't shown, but I hope maybe there's something else they see and don't want to release because they're still developing a lead.  I hope that's the case, anyway.

Okay, from my understand, hot, windy weather causes scents to evaporate quickly.  A light rain can refreshen a scent trail.  So, wouldn't it make sense that snow would 'freeze' the trail?  Why not give the dogs a shot at tracking her?  What would it hurt at this point?

I really think they are withholding the video for other reasons.  I am holding onto the hope that the perp still has her and she is alive.

I hope Samantha is still alive and can be found. 

About the bolded part: The person named "Dwayne" (current boyfriend) that claims he was to pick her up at work, didn't call her father when she wasn't there when he came to pick her up that night? I would like to hear more about "Dwayne" and his actions or lack there of.....

As the search for Samantha Koenig continues, the family is focusing on getting the word out, any way they can. Samantha's mother, Darlene Christiansen, said on Monday, that the past five days have been a nightmare for her family. She says all she wants is to have Samantha safe and back home.

"I feel like somebody has ripped the life out of me... It's undescribable," says Christiansen. " It could be a stranger, it's the not knowing."

I wish LE would announce whether CB has been cleared or not. If he is completely innocent, loosing his job isn't very fair, imo. With the past charges, I can see why he is suspect #1. But if he has nothing to do with anything and has proven that to LE they should announce that so we can move on to other suspects rather than wrecking CB's life.

absolutely...that is why I didn't want to post too much about him...a lot of people are saying that he was with them that night...so I don't know.  But, for obvious reasons he is being looked at.  I'm sure we will know soon.

Less than two months before police say she was kidnapped, Samantha Koenig filed a request for a restraining order saying she was in "fear of death of physical injury" from Bird after he had allegedly sexually assaulted her.

In the civil protective order request, filed Nov. 15, Koenig wrote that she was at Bird's Anchorage home when he tried to force himself on her. He then allegedly sexually assaulted her, she wrote.

She requested the 20-day sexual assault civil protective order but, according to the file, left a hearing before the magistrate heard the matter. The order was not issued.

Bird was never charged with a crime and it's unclear whether Koenig ever reported the alleged assault to the police.

When asked about the November allegations against Bird, Parker, the police spokesman, said he was unable to comment because of a law that bars police officials from identifying victims of sexual assault.

Butler said there was nothing to the allegation.

Bird, meanwhile, was in court Monday on another matter stemming from a January allegation of an assault on a bouncer at the Anchor Bar in downtown Anchorage. The charge was dismissed Monday because there wasn't enough evidence to point to an assault, said municipal prosecutor Cindy Franklin.

Reached by phone Monday, Bird said that he was "mentally exhausted and stressed" and concerned that his name was being ruined.

Surveillance video reveals a young woman abducted nearly a week ago in Anchorage appeared frightened by the man who took her, a detective supervising the investigation said Tuesday.

In an interview Tuesday, police said the alarmed reaction by Samantha Koenig, 18, to a man who approached the Midtown coffee hut where she was working indicates the abductor was carrying a weapon. Police continued to reveal little else about a video or collection of videos that captured the apparent abduction.

Authorities have refused to make the clips or still photos from them public, saying doing so would compromise the investigation and would not reveal enough to help people identify the abductor.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Anchorage police say there's little doubt an 18-year-old woman was abducted after she closed up a coffee stand Wednesday night.

Detective Slawomir Markiewicz tells the Anchorage Daily News that surveillance tapes from that night show a man wearing a hooded sweat shirt and possibly a baseball cap approaching the Common Grounds Espresso stand in midtown Anchorage.

The tapes then show Samantha Koenig leaving with the man, who was apparently armed, and walking toward the Old Seward Highway.

Markiewicz says the case has been classified an abduction based on Koenig's demeanor and the man's actions from the tape. More than 20 detectives and other officers are working the case.

The investigation into the disappearance of the young barista is ongoing. Detectives released information that a surveillance camera had shown a man wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt forcing Samantha Koenig to leave the shack with him on foot at about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Police still do not know if the abduction was random or if the man in the video knew her.

"Our experience is usually these people are targeted in this type of situation," Anchorage Police Department spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said. Police are aware of Samantha Koenig's attempt to obtain the restraining order.

Robberies at Anchorage's dozens of coffee shacks do occur, Parker said, although he couldn't remember another case where someone was abducted from an espresso stand. These locations are where mostly young women work alone preparing coffee beverages.

Anchorage police say detectives are making progress in the search for abducted 18-year-old Samantha Koenig but declined to discuss specific details from the case.

Parker said the team of detectives working around the clock on the case has interviewed dozens of people, leading to more interviews and some potential evidence.

No arrests have been made, nor any suspects or persons of interest publicly named. And nobody has reported seeing Koenig for a week. Her last known images exist in surveillance camera footage from the Common Grounds Espresso hut where she worked, in the parking lot of the Alaska Club at 630 E. Tudor Road.

"The first baristas didn't see anything we haven't seen before (with other employees)," Tyler Duncan said. "It just looked like she did a real poor job of closing."

There was no sign of a struggle, he said. Soon after, when the Duncans watched the surveillance video, they saw something that made them call police immediately, he said. The couple would not elaborate on what triggered the call but said the video was obscured somehow.

The abduction was apparently so stealthy that a person seen in the video, sitting in a pickup about 50 feet from the stand, didn't appear to notice anything strange, Tyler said.

"They were just oblivious," he said.

The security system at Common Grounds, with multiple cameras and an alarm with a panic button, is better than most small businesses have in Anchorage, Tyler said. "We took it seriously. We have young women working in here."

ANCHORAGE - One week after 18-year-old Samantha Koenig was kidnapped from a Midtown coffee stand, her family still waits for answers.

Family and friends are camped out in a motorhome in the Alaska Club parking lot. Friends said they're still optimistic Koenig will be found.

Officers said they've taken a lot of calls in the past week, even from psychics claiming to have answers.

“We can't accept stuff that comes from psychics,” said Anchorage Police Department Spokesman Lt. Dave Parker. “We've never had a psychic lead in the history of the Anchorage Police Department that turned out to be a lead – a true lead that assisted us in solving a case.”

John Bacon, a man who helped search for Koenig on Monday and said he was a private investigator and bounty hunter, now says he’s off the case.

After researching his past, KTVA has learned Bacon is a two-time convicted sex offender and was once publicly outed by a Florida television station for impersonating a psychologist.

Bacon told KTVA Wednesday he is heading to Virginia, and has passed off the case to another PI, but KTVA was unable to confirm that information, or for whom in Alaska Bacon was supposed to be working.

Something that I read on her father's FB page made me think he was on friendly terms with the current boyfriend.  I may be wrong, I am not positive.  Just a note on the pictures (they are great.)  Anchorage has had a crazy amount of snow and with the businesses plowing out their parking lots there are huge mounds of snow blocking visibility all over town, we are talking many feet high.  Pictures that I saw show very large mounds near the coffee shop.

This is the oddest case. 

My husband was just in Anchorage and said he'd never seen the mounds of snow so high.  It really makes it difficult to see things that you normally would be able to see.  Days ago on one of Samantha's FB pages a woman reported that she had seen a man who seemed to be holding a woman as they walked down the street, but she was uncertain of the exact night.  She reported that the woman had on black leggings and a green sweater.  It has not been released, to my knowledge, what Samantha was wearing.  I am so frustrated over this case.  People are angry that APD is not releasing any info.  Rumors were swirling last night(again) that she had been found.  People accuse APD of being incompetent, but the FBI is on it too.   I don't know what to think.  Her father has not made any FB comments in a few days.

CARTFLY, KTUU is an Anchorage station.  I did not see this, but I would think that if that actually happened, we would hear more about it.  But then again, FB is the only place I saw the person post about possibly seeing the man and woman walking near Common Grounds, with the woman possibly being detained by the man.

Thanks for the updates Monkeys. I can not get past LE not releasing the surv video of Sam being abducted with the excuse that it would harm the prosecution/trial. Why in hell at this point would anyone care about a trial......she hasn't even been found, sounds azz backwards to me, jmho. I can't recall ever seeing a case like this....

Her father, James Koenig, said he is now offering $60,000 for information that gets his daughter home safely. James has even offered to give his daughter's abductor the cash if the abductor or any accomplices release her.

But it's obvious now the abduction isn't and wasn't about money, James Koenig said.

"The reward is really moot at this point," he said. "Because if it was about money, I'd have her back by now. I could put a million dollars on that ... flier, and I don't think that would change a thing."

Still, James is keeping up hope and feeding information to the detectives, he said. He declined to elaborate.

"Every day, I think they're still getting good leads, and as far as what they're following up on or how good they are or how close they're getting, I don't know. I'm sure that's based on they don't want to get my hopes up ... It's just been a roller coaster ride. I feel like I'm going to find her, then I don't find her come midnight, and then crash. The next day I'm just kind of in solitude and not real talkative

    It was a little scary not being able to get into the cage.  Yeah, I have no personal knowledge, but I wouldn't put much stock in the info that the boyfriend was with someone else.  For one thing, he could have very well been with a group of friends.  I've wondered if his and Sam's relationship was fairly recent too, and maybe that is why his name hasn't been out there.  Maybe "boyfriend" is being used pretty loosely. 

Hi AkMom.  According to an early ADN.com article (posted on page 2 of this thread) they were dating for 10 months. I seriously doubt it was a love interest of his, surely he wouldn't be that stupid. I was sorry to see this today.  Is there some association between the Seeking the Lost Facebook page and SM or Websleuths?  I know I have seen it referred to but have never followed it until now.

I missed that they had been dating for 10 months.  I do know that in one post on his FB, James K referred to a Dwayne.  He said they hadn't had much sleep or something to that effect.  Can't say for sure that he was talking about the boyfriend, but may have been.

I am heartsick over this case.  In my own state and I can't think of a thing more to help.

I did check out some of the friends on FB of the woman JK got a restraining order against.  Some of them have posted on the FB pages for Sam, but I wasn't able to find out anything else. 

Seeking the Lost has no connection to SM.  I can't answer for Websleuths.  I'm not sure they have a real connection to any forum but I could be wrong.

This case must be frustrating to you being so close.  Seems to me like LE has more info than they are letting on.

Perhaps, LE has some kind of forensic evidence and is waiting for results? I want to believe they have more than what has been released but I am starting to think LE thinks she may be deceased. I pray that is not the case.

I really don't understand this.  I think the "official" flyer has remained the same.  But the Please Find Samantha Koenig page is putting out this one, I believe with the father's blessing. 

This description of Samantha's clothing is interesting.  Early on a Facebook poster on one of the sites I had been reading,  reported to have seen a man with a girl under his control who's clothing matched this description.  She was urged to go to the police. I may be able to dig tonight and see if I can find it.

Then there is this woman Phillana Dobbs-Sager, Martial Arts Teacher for Southside Kickboxing.  She had said she witnessed something.  Don't know right now if it is possible she is the one from the FB post????????

I don't know about the door.  I guess if someone approached with a weapon and demanded access, there is really no protection, so you might as well unlock the door.  From what I understand there was a panic button, so don't know why she didn't push it, unless she was too closely being watched.  There was a mention of "cups" being in there, which made me wonder about possible DNA from a cup??  It was reported from the beginning that it was also a robbery, but what I find confusing is first her stuff was there, then it was said that her stuff, including a pretty rare Harley Davidson purse was missing, then it was said that her stuff was there and that it wasn't that purse anyway???  Confusing.

If I am remembering correctly, in town, the new Seward Highway, is also called C Street.  The old Seward runs parallel, but only runs part way thru town and dead-ends.  It is one block over from the new Seward.

I don't know how to state this properly, but I am having trouble with the "culture" of the missing person thing.  Does anyone understand what I mean???

I tried to search for the post on a FB page by a woman who claimed early on, to have seen a man with a woman under his control wearing a green shirt and black leggings.  I have not been able to find it and I believe that it may have been on the SeekingtheLost FB page that was made for Samantha.  This is the page that was taken down, because the owner was being very cautious(very smart in my mind) about what she allowed to be posted.

Yeah, since we know about the guy she was supposed to be getting a RO on I was very surprised that there was never a leak of the boyfriend's name.  No one on FB ever seems to question it either? 

Haven't we seen other crime victims have their FB pages go poof, or have most things disappear while they are missing?   For some reason I thought that the FBI frequently causes that to happen???

akmom...very powerful from James.  I wonder why he believes that she is being held captive and passed around for pay back to someone?  Interesting?  Who?  He must have information of the sorts because he was so specific.  I don't know.  He obviously wears his heart on his sleeve and hopes that the captors will see that...I can't say that I wouldn't do the same thing if my child were taken...I would like promise the same...please just give him/her back to me and I will get you the heck out of here.  It may not be the right thing to do but I would want my child back more than doing the right thing.

Wow.  That message from the Sam's father is strange.  It almost sounds like he's into something illegal.  And is it really smart to threaten an abductor that way?  I wonder what LE says about this message?

It broke my heart to read James post. As a parent, I could feel his passionate desperate plea and the love he has for his little girl. Most of us would go to the ends of the earth for our children and I don't think James is any exception.

I think now he is fed up with whatever Le is doing or not doing. He is getting very desperate and I am afraid he may go after who ever he believes is responsible. He certainly has an idea about the who and what that led up to her being abducted. I pray that God gives him the strength he needs as he awaits news on Sam. I can't imagine the sheer hell he is experiencing. It is so heart wrenching.

I have a tremendous amount of sympathy for Mr Koenig.  I am just not sure, at this point, if threats are the best way to go.  Not sure if the offer of help is wise either.  I hope I am not coming off as too critical, I just know that he has already been scammed by that sex-offender.  Not sure if someone with seriously bad intent is going to be affected by anything he says.  I just hope LE or the FBI actually know SOMETHING....

Meanwhile, a reward fund built on donations has swelled to at least $65,000, and a clock keeping track of how long Koenig has been missing continues to tick forward at a new website dedicated to her safe return.

Police Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz said Tuesday that detectives trying to solve the mystery of Koenig's disappearance are putting in long hours, working late into the night and over weekends. They've talked to hundreds of people, followed up on more than 350 tips and conducted searches at various locations and on the Internet, Markiewicz said.

"It's a continuous effort," he said.

Police have not publicly identified any suspects, and no one has reported seeing Koenig since the night of Feb. 1.

It was just before 8 p.m. when a man wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt and carrying a weapon walked up to the Common Grounds Espresso stand outside the Alaska Club at 630 E. Tudor Road, police said. Police say a surveillance video shows Koenig leave with the man on foot, and the pair walked west.

The man is "significanly taller" than the 5-foot-5, 140-pound Koenig, police said.

Markiewicz said Koenig appears to be scared in the video, which police have refused to release. Koenig's frightened demeanor and the man's actions, as seen in the video, indicate she was abducted, he said.

"There may be many theories that need to be talked about or examined ... I don't want to say which one is the strongest, which one is the weakest. We have to be open-minded," Markiewicz said.

There is no evidence to disprove the abduction theory, Markiewicz said. Despite statistics showing that an abduction victim's chances of survival decrease with time, the detectives also have found no reason to think Koenig is dead, he said.

"We haven't found any evidence that anything else happened to her, at this time," Markiewicz said. "I think the main thing here is that there is no evidence to contradict that."

Koenig's father, James, said he is still hopeful his daughter will return unharmed.

"I feel her in my heart. I know she's still alive. She's close. I just have to keep the hope and believe in what the police tell me, that they're doing everything they can," he said. "I'll never give up hope until I find her."

James Koenig has offered to give the reward money to anyone with solid information that brings his daughter home safely, and directed pleas to her abductor or abductors saying that they can have the cash if she is released.

"I have resources, good and bad, I do not want to unleash the bad, I do not wish ill against you or yours, but if this does not end soon, you leave me no choice," James Koenig wrote in a recent Facebook post.

Police, including Markiewicz, have warned against vigilante justice.

"We certainly don't want people to take matters into their own hands," Markiewicz said. "At this time, we don't believe we have reason to be concerned about somebody doing something improper."

I often endure a lot of abuse while administrating the pages, with the last most unfortunate case being the Samantha Koenig page where her father was demanding I allow all posts to the page to show and that I not delete anything.

            When I make the pages for high profile cases, the content people try to post is often unsuitable and disturbing so I do not approve the posts.

            When people notice their comment hasn't appeared, they become angry and send me horrible e-mails and/or post outrageous comments attacking me.

            I also had the same problem with the Michelle Parker page and had to shut it down as well.

            It's not worth sitting here trembling because of the what ungrateful family members and their friends are doing to undermine my efforts.

Hmm, I had not thought about that possibility, Kitty Mom.  Sometimes, I too think they know who it is....BUT, if that is the case, why don't they do something??  If Sam is still alive, why not go in and get her?  If they are watching someone, I would think they would have an idea of where she is.  I have never understood why dogs were not initially brought in.  Snow would not necessarily have covered up the scent.  I am frustrated.

Maybe we just don't have any really experienced tracking dogs in this state.  I just don't buy it that a good dog couldn't have done some tracking.  Another thing is the timing.  She called her dad before she got off.  Was she going to spend the night with the boyfriend?  Did the boyfriends just assume that she went home?  Were there calls made to her phone, which I believe was left at Common Grounds?  I am really surprised that neither man contacted the other about her whereabouts?????  Nagging questions that won't go away......

Good questions.  I too want to know if the boyfriend called and told her that he was going to be late.  Isn't he used to talking to her after work?  Did he not find it odd that he hadn't heard from her?  Did he call the house phone (if there is one)?  It was the coffee stand employees or owners that actually reported foul play.  So, boyfriend wasn't concerned?  Or have we just not heard that part?

And has it been said who the boyfriend thought that she got a ride from since he was running late?  Did he not at least try to find out that she had made it home?  When she didn't answer after numerous attempts (if there were any) why didn't he drive to her home to make sure that she did make it home?  Maybe he did and I am not aware of it.

I haven't seen anything posted regarding the Harley Davidson purse etc.  The father was quite anxious at the news conference and a bit rough around the edges with his language and the letter he posted seemed to incinuate he may have inside info.

So, when the SeekingtheLost FB page on Samantha was taken down, it was because the admin wouldn't allow rumor or fundraising posts.  She was pretty careful, but I didn't think overly controlling.  The family wanted all posts to be allowed without censure.

What was she into?  Pot, drugs, drinking, sex, parties?  Did she ever run away or steal?  Cocaine, Meth, ecstacy?  Or did she abstain from all vices, teach Sunday School and have friends of like mind?  Where is her mom?  Any siblings?  What places did she frequent?  Did she go out to the valley or down to Girdwood much?  Talkeetna?  Friends out there?  Was there anybody from your past out to get you?  How long did she work at this shop?  How did she do on other jobs?  Is she anxious?  Is she resourceful?  Is there anyone she would be contacting other than you?  Have the investigators hushed this type of info or is it just too personal to talk about?  How long will it take before too personal doesn't matter?  My guess is that they know where she is because people are not asking for information on her.  These questions would be so out there.  They never have been.  Just vague questions.  By the looks of how few visit this site I don't expect an answer.  I did talk to a person about a tip I heard.  It was nothing.  Still caring.  Still listening.  STill beleiving this girl is in Kansas enjoying her tornado.  I hope!!  Prayers.

I agree.  There is something not right about her personal information. We have all seen the photo of her wearing the marijuana leaf printed bandana and if you do a quick search of public record you can find she has records of leaving the scene of accidents, driving the wrong way on streets, unsafe lane changes, and speeding.  She has a criminal record of her own. Of course, none of this is a reason to be kidnapped but it does provide information about what sort of life she may have lead and in turn, her risks and the sort of people that may be involved in her life that could be suspects or could simply provide more information.
According to an ADN article, James has stated, "'I have resources, good and bad, I do not want to unleash the bad, I do not wish ill against you or yours, but if this does not end soon, you leave me no choice,' James Koenig wrote in a recent Facebook post."  To me, this indicates that James has some idea, I mean, after all you can't "unleash the bad" unless you know who you are unleashing it toward.  Its just very confusing.
I don't wish any ill will to this young woman, nor her family, but I feel a lot is being asked of the public without any respect toward the public that is providing as much help as they can. We aren't stupid.  We know something is not right.  At some point, the public will be discouraged and will not provide anymore help...financially or what not.

It is really hard to tell as the officer answers questions he looks over at a woman investigator (not the camera) as he answers almost like he is trying not to say too much. I have a feeling they might be waiting on some sort of forensics testing to come back.....then possibly an arrest.(?) I did get the feeling they have much more than they are saying. (at least I pray they do. I want justice for Sam's family and peace for her Father)

On another note, did you see on CB's Mothers FB page that they are packing and putting into storage all of their things possibly relocating back to North Carolina? Her reason being CB is getting death threats. I can't hardly blame her for wanting to protect her family but relocating thousands of miles? Why not ask for police protection? I guess she feels it is serious enough to warrant leaving everything.

I wish something, anything would come of this case. It appears to be moving into "cold" case territory as we speak as LE remains silent ::MonkeyMad::

I believe CB's mom said it was temporary, but I don't understand moving stuff into storage if that is the case?  On the other hand, I believe they are military and her spouse has been deployed.  It is not unusual for family to go back home or the area that they feel the most home at, when the spouse is deployed overseas.

Your input is greatly appreciated. Although honestly just because she was wearing a bandanna with a marijuana leaf does not mean she smokes marijuana. I am not sure if you are from Alaska but you can go to the Alaska state fair and find shops that sell all sorts of clothing with this on it. And really if she does or has makes no difference in this case. I can tell you there are many many Americans who do use marijuana.
She has wonderful friends. I can not say what type of life she may have led or what mistakes she has made in her past. But I can say most people have made mistakes in their pasts. Speeding tickets.. if anyone goes through there life without one then I give them all the credit, because most everyone I know has had at least one. I don't see any thing in her records that say she was involved in things she shouldn't be and there for that is why this Kidnapping happened.
Traffic violations... but hasn't that happened to most people who drive. She did nothing to deserve this.
I believe the public wants information that cant be given out at this time for reasons we may not know but I am trusting they have their reasons and to protect Sam and get her home safe is what we all want. The public has been given the information that has been allowed to be released. Trust me I wish they would release more as well. But I dont want them to release more for my benefit if it could potentially harm the investigation or Sam.
If people don't understand this then I am sorry. There has been so much support world wide and it has been such a blessing. If the public chooses not to help because they cant be told some info then they are missing the point, in my opinion. If someone doesn't want to help or support Sams Dad and Family because they are frustrated that they do not know everything then they were not there to genuinely help anyways. I hope this makes some sense. Please know everyone's comments are appreciated and the questions are understood. Feel free to post. As more information comes available it will be released. No.  The point is "IF she is being looked for who is she?"  Everyone thinks they know their child and no one really wants to know what they didn't know.  For certain you don't want to be smacked down with details when such a terror is going on.  However, if she was anxious and/or self medicated or needed to get away often or couldn't hold a job or had a major change in personality or dreamed of a place she would like to go.. or couldn't handle interpersonal relationships so anyone getting to close to her would be a great emotional threat or (etc for ever) someone is going to want to inform and maybe has.  These might be more important tips and the only tips that people have.  Is anyone asking or open for this information?  If not..why not?  We (the public) absolutley do not need to know this stuff.  I think (and I hope I am right) that there is information and no one is in panic mode anymore.  (Except for those who do not have information).  It is sad that the public has to go through more than they should have to.  If this was a straight kidnapping it would have been handled differently.  Something isn't forthright.  THis is a hard point to make.  But it is the opinion out here.  Of course the reason for letting this continue down the avenue it has may be very sensitive or might just be hard to stop the flow of concern.  Here is a  question to the family that could be answered yes or no.  Is she still missing?  Should we still look?

Things fell apart after Koenig’s boyfriend discovered the relationship several months later. Now that the 18-year-old has been missing for more than a month, both Bird and his mother said the past is behind them.

ANCHORAGE - It has been one month since an armed man kidnapped Samantha Koenig from Common Grounds Espresso.

The Anchorage Police Department (APD) has shared very little information about the case, which has caused community frustration.

Police said their mission is very clear. Even though they have no new developments to report, APD said there should be no doubt in people's minds that they are working this case hard and will continue to do so until they find Koenig.

“Every time a new lead comes in or we generate a lead, we follow up on those leads,” said APD spokesman Lieutenant Dave Parker. “We are eliminating people as suspects, eliminating things that aren't related to the case.”

As the search for Samantha Koenig goes into its second month, a combination of detectives and officers are working around the clock to figure out who took her and why.

APD hasn’t released any of the surveillance video from the coffee stand, but police said they are holding it back fro a good reason.

“Let us deal with the real life situation and make sure we don't give away information that might be of help to the kidnappers or that might taint a jury in the future,” Lieutenant Parker said.

I agree. People tend to air everything on FB when they should just remain quiet. It continues to amaze me how much dirty laundry people put out there on facebook. I agree, Tammie should just refrain from saying anything at all. It just keeps her and Chris in the spotlight and puts more scrutiny on themselves.

Curiously though, I've seen some instances where people remained quiet when they or one of the family members were accused by others in the media, forums and/or social networks and were criticized because they DIDN'T stand up and deny or fight back against the rumors and etc.  Some seem to think if what is being said isn't true, why aren't they disputing it?  Maybe a simple statement would be best if something need be said, and not continuous postings on FB.  JMHO

Definitely see your point Muffy.  I do believe in what is being said that JK is possibly involved in some things that may not be legal...he kind of hinted to that in his statements.  I disagree with Tammie and her online rage against this father that is missing his daughter.  I guess it is just how it hit me.  I also missed where he outright accused her son of kidnapping Sam.  I am not big on watching videos and such, so I may have missed that.

Thanks Klaas. I have the last name only because someone posted it in the comments section of ADN.com. I checked it out and the poster is correct. Apparently, he did not want his last name out there because his Father (whose name is identical to his own) has a bit of a history with LE and he did not want people to think he was like his bio dad. Good Christian folk, hmm, you may want to read the bible once more Ms. Counts, because you sure blasphemed my daughters good name all over the internet, and with absolutely no right, no fact to substantiate, and obviously, without Samantha around to refute your allegations, how convenient for you. You lady have no shame, and you should be very, very ashamed of yourself. I shouldn’t have to take the time away from Samantha’s case to let everyone know, what they can already see, when they read the garbage you are putting out about Samantha, let’s have everyone Youtube your bouncing baby boy, Whyte Tyson, and have them make their own decision, on what type of person he is, is this enough publicity for you Christopher, because we all know why you and your evil mother are doing this, as you stated before, this “Samantha’s case” is the best thing that has ever happened to your career, because of the 1200 or was it 2000 hits your Youtube videos were getting in such a short period of time, after someone found out who you were, through public records, and posted it in a public forum. Duane, Samantha, and myself, have all been working the swing shift, so we all kept the same hours, which was really nice so we could spend the most time together, Samantha and Duane would spend most of their time playing Call of Duty Black Ops on their XBOX 360, or watching television, and playing other board or card games. I have been making them stay out of the media, and decompress their emotions lately, so they don’t fall into a deeper depression, and for the most part it has helped, as well as having my other kids, friends, and family over to help keep us sane and focused. I feel for Sam's dad...his heart seems to really pour into his posts.  I do have to ask though...if Duane lived with them then why did they not know she was missing a lot sooner?  Since he was late picking Samantha up...if she didn't make it home that night...wouldn't they be suspicious?

I also find it odd regarding Duane. I wish James or Duane would clarify some of those questions.

James is having to defend his daughter instead of focusing on the only thing that matters.....FINDING SAM!

Yeah that's pretty crappy to do in the midst of what has happened.  I understand defending her son if he is innocent...but, she could approach it in a much more dignified way.  She isn't the one that has a child missing...he is right there with her...even if he is being accused of doing it...it isn't anything close to what Sam's dad is going through.  She is making it so much worse.  In my eyes it makes him look even more suspicious than if she never tried to public defend him by bashing Samantha. 

I was really peed that TC (birds Mom) went so far as to reveal something so personal as a STD. Seriously? What in hell was she thinking? Then CB posted a rant (that Sam's FB page has a screen shot of) talking about how she got that STD (if there is even any truth to that), calling Sam and James vulgar names, threats etc. I can't actually post it because every other word was f this f that but it is on their page. And Chelsea just gleans her info for her articles from the forums, topix and news reports. She is just interested in sensationalism IMO and getting her own name out there. I haven't read the FB page yet.  I was shocked when Tammie revealed the STD...why on earth would she do that?  How is that going to help anyone or anything.  Even if she is trying to point out specifics...to prove her son's innocence...why use THAT?  I cannot say that I believe anything that she says.  She seems like an over dramatic enabler that had a lot of help in how and why her son is the way he is.  I am not saying that I believe that her son is guilty of Sam's abduction...but I am saying she needs to sit down and zip it and probably even make herself invisible.

Yes, that is the other question that I wanted to ask...is there an official statement that I have missed of LE clearing him?

I'd like to see that too.  Of course, that may not mean much.  Sometimes LE can do sneaky things and even lie as a case is investigated.  What if they have told him he's cleared, but all the time they're still watching and waiting to see if he relaxes enough to make a mistake?  I think it's hard to tell at this point.  We aren't getting very much real info.  JMHO

Was just coming to post that from James.  I have not been able to understand why there seemed to have been no communication between Duane and James about Sam's whereabouts that night. Even odder, now, when you consider that Duane was living with James and Sam.   While we don't know for sure that they didn't communicate, we do know that her employer was the one who reported her missing, which makes no sense to me. 

I have heard no official confirmation as to whether CB has been cleared.

From what I've read, Christopher “Whyte Tyson” Bird is a freak and he would be #1 on my suspect list.

Anchorage police have reason to believe that missing 18-year-old Samantha Koenig is alive, according to a detective investigating her apparent abduction about five weeks ago.

Anchorage police have reason to believe that missing 18-year-old Samantha Koenig is alive, according to a detective investigating her apparent abduction about five weeks ago.

While police have revealed few details about the investigation since Koenig vanished Feb. 1 -- they say she was seen frightened in surveillance video as an armed man forced her from a Midtown coffee hut about 8 p.m. -- the team of detectives on the case is working hard to find her, said Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz, the head of the police department's Homicide Unit.

The team has interviewed more than 100 people and followed up on about 400 tips, Markiewicz said. They've been making progress on a daily basis and still hope to find Koenig unharmed, Markiewicz said.

"I'm privy to the details of the investigation, and I believe that she's alive," Markiewicz said.

In profanity-laden Facebook posts, Bird has blamed James Koenig for Samantha's disappearance, an assertion Koenig says is false.

 Markiewicz, the detective, said the investigation has not turned up any information indicating the abduction is related to James Koenig. Markiewicz would not say if Bird is a suspect or has been cleared in the investigation. The nasty dialogue between Bird's supporters and Koenig's was a distraction, Markiewicz said.

 "Our main focus is finding Samantha, finding her alive, and that's what we're focused on," the detective said. "That's why we're dedicating all of our resources to that. There are a lot of other things happening. But we have to maintain the focus and stay the course."

I agree about CB, he would be my #1 just from what I have seen so far.

I checked out Duane and his bio dad in court records. Duane Jr just has some minor traffic violations. I have found nothing out of the ordinary with Duane Junior.
Duane Sr however had a whole laundry list of court dockets. Some I couldn't understand but I did go through about 25 of them. The charges ranged from a long term stalking charge against him (dismissed) on 4/11, Theft 2nd degree in 1998, Shoplifting in 1990, Robbery 1991, Class C felony, wreckless driving, failure to stop when instructed by a LE officer in 2004, and a dissolution of marriage. There are other charges but I didn't understand what the charges meant.
I am still looking to see if he is incarcerated now or in another state. That is an interesting thought that maybe Sr wanted to hurt Jr in some way and it could certainly be a possibility. It would explain the tight lips by LE and Duane Jr.

I want to trust LE, but here we are more than a month into it and nothing has surfaced.

KTVA reporters tweeting last night about a major crime investigation in the Turnagain Arm area of Anchorage, Clay Products Drive.  APD would neither confirm or deny that had to do with Samantha Koenig.  Have heard nothing so far this morning.

Long time no see everybody! Reading on BlackBerry for months but not able to reply while gone working!  With all the little bits I have read like Sam stealing money (allegedly) and LE not showing footage of her being taken (allegedly) and other things that maybe this is a staged incident?  Just throwing that out there.  I get the feeling that there is an urgency to find her but that she isn't in danger.  I dunno, those who remember me know I am usually wrong but I just get a hinky feeling on this case.  I hope I am right because that would mean she is okay.

Muffy Bee, one thing that APD has said about not releasing the tape has to do with "prosecuting the case", or words to that effect.   Things that make me go hmmmmmmm......

Israel Keys, a 34-year-old construction contractor who worked under the company moniker Keyes Construction, was arrested in Lufkin on Tuesday. A joint effort between the Anchorage Police Department, the FBI and Texas law enforcement led to Keyes' arrest, the full details of which were not immediately available as police said the federal arrest warrant is sealed.

Court documents filed in the Eastern Texas District Court said that Keyes had been charged with access device fraud, a charge commonly used when someone uses a debit or credit card without the card owner's consent. Also listed in the docket was a criminal complaint based out of Alaska. Keyes was due back in court in Texas early Thursday, according to the most recent filings Thursday evening.

Texas news station KTRE reported that Keyes was arrested in the parking lot of a restaurant after a traffic stop, where a Texas state trooper discovered there was an out-of-state bulletin for Keyes. Police searched the car and "found enough evidence in the vehicle to arrest the driver for suspected kidnapping," KTRE reported.

Just after Keyes was arrested, police served a search warrant at a house near Clay Products Drive and Spurr Lane, in Anchorage's Turnagain neighborhood. Markiewicz said Keyes -- a construction company owner believed to be its sole employee -- lived at the house recently. Detectives have served nearly 40 search warrants in Anchorage at residences and to get phone records, Markiewicz said.

On a website for his business, Keyes lists his work history in construction. He says that he worked in Washington from 1995 to 1997. After that, the site says he served in the Army for three years, stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington, Fort Hood in Texas and in Egypt before he was discharged in 2000. From 2001 to 2007, he worked for the Makah Tribal Council in Neah Bay, Wash. He moved to Alaska and started his business in 2007, his website says.

I read about the arrest in Lufkin last night, but they only said it was related to an out of state kidnapping.  I wondered then if it would end up being a case I knew about!  I didn't put it together with this until I just saw the picture of the arrest from the fb link a few minutes ago.

Yes, I was surprised MuffyBee.  It was really a funny feeling because of that thought that I'd had when I read about the arrest...  No case in particular came to mind, and I never would have imagined it would have been related to Samantha.  I haven't followed very closely but had never read that a suspect may be in Texas, if it was ever mentioned.

Just after Keyes was arrested, police served a search warrant at a house in Anchorage's Turnagain neighborhood. Markiewicz said Keyes resides at the house on Spurr Lane, a narrow dead-end street off of Clay Products Drive.

Next-door neighbors Michele Buwalda and Tom McMillan said Keyes lives there with a woman named Kimberly Anderson, who is also listed as the owner of the house in city property records. A daughter they estimated was 12 or 13 lives with the couple at least some of the time, they said.

Markiewicz said Anderson is not a suspect or person of interest in the case.

Since Keyes and Anderson moved in a few years ago, the couple made many improvements to what is one of the more modest homes on the street, Buwalda and McMillan said. Keyes and Anderson were quiet and polite. They threw a couple of small parties each year, the neighbors said.

"I would be pretty surprised if he's involved with it," McMillan said.

Keyes spent a lot of time running saws and other equipment in the yard for his construction business, occasionally running afoul of neighbors because of late evening noise, they said.

Neighbors said that they noticed an unmarked police car idling for hours on Monday at an intersection a block away. Tuesday morning police arrived in unmarked cars, neighbors said. Wearing SWAT gear and carrying rifles, they swarmed the blue house. They took pictures and seemed to be collecting evidence. Later on that day, police followed Anderson's car as she pulled into the driveway, neighbors said. She left with them. Her car and Keyes' truck were towed. She returned the next day by cab. A crime scene van stayed parked outside the house until late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, neighbors said.

"We certainly want to find out what projects he did. Whether he had access to other residences, whether he had keys to other houses. Any information like that," Markiewicz said.

Koenig's fate remains unknown and the investigators continue to treat her disappearance as a highly sensitive abduction case, Markiewicz said.

"We investigated as if she's alive. We haven't found her. We don't know what happened with her. We're concerned. We don't know if she's alive," Markiewicz said. "We have investigated this from the beginning as an abduction. Nothing has changed with that. We are very concerned that she hasn't been seen for six weeks."

"The truth is, we don't know her whereabouts ... and we don't know what's happened with her since she was abducted," he said.

Arrest made in case of missing Alaska barista Samantha Koenig, police say


(CBS/AP) ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Authorities said a man who owns a construction company in Anchorage has been arrested in Texas on charges related to the disappearance of an 18-year-old barista.

According to police, 34-year-old Israel Keyes was arrested this week in the disappearance of Samantha Koenig. He was described in a statement issued by police Thursday as "a person of interest" in Koenig's disappearance.

"He's the only person we charged and the only person of interest. The biggest thing at this time is that we haven't found Samantha Koenig and we don't know her whereabouts," Detective Slawomir Markiewicz told the Anchorage Daily News.

This arrest is the only public break Koenig's case. The arrest warrant remains sealed and police have revealed few details in the incident. On Feb. 1,  Koenig was last seen on surveillance tape being led away against her will by a man with a weapon at about 8 p.m. from the coffee shack where she worked.

Police spokeswoman Anita Shell confirmed that few details would be immediately released.

"Because of the sensitivity of the case, they sealed it so it didn't compromise the case," she told the Associated Press.

Police have not revealed the charges against Keyes but according to the charging document filed in a Texas federal courthouse, Keyes is charged with access device fraud, which in the past has been used to prosecute people who illegally use another person's bank or credit card to steal money.

The police department said the arrest was a combined effort of the Anchorage police, the FBI and Texas authorities.

Shell said investigators want to speak to anyone who had personal contact with Keyes or his business, Keyes Construction.

"They're just wanting to talk to anybody who may have had contact with him in the past to see if there's any links that they can put together," Shell said.

Federal and local law enforcement are now asking for help from the public to find out more information about the self-employed builder.

"As I've said before, I believe this case will be solved. This is a step toward that goal, a big step," Detective Markiewicz said.

He was convicted in federal court of drunk driving, speeding and failure to obey a traffic control device in Tacoma, Washington, in 2001.
He also had a state charge there of driving with a suspended license

A Texas U.S. Attorney's office said Israel Keyes, the "person of interest" arrested in the Samantha Koenig abduction case, will be transported back to Alaska for court hearings.

The Jefferson County Downtown Jail in Beaumont, Texas confirmed Friday that Keyes is being held at its facility and that he's been there since Wednesday.

Keyes was arrested on Tuesday in a parking lot in Lufkin, Texas, after a Texas state trooper pulled him over for a traffic violation.

A U.S. Attorney said Keyes is charged with access device fraud -- making a transaction with someone else's access device, like a credit or debit card. Because Keyes is facing a federal charge, he's under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Marshal's Service.

Details related to his charge remain sealed under a federal arrest warrant, but according to the criminal complaint filed against Keyes, the violation happened in Alaska.

This is certainly confusing, things in his car linking him to Samatha but no details.

How and when did he arrive in Texas and where was he staying?

They are going to transfer him back to Alaska, sure hope they have checked out all of his hidey-holes here in Texas!

Terrible thought but what if he has her holed up in some abandoned house or building somewhere and she is unable to break free, just so many what-ifs.

Admittedly she didn't know him that well. She didn't even remember the name of the woman who he lived with. But she did recall when they moved out. They left the neighborhood two or three years ago to move into a house over in Turnagain that the woman bought. About a month later she says Keyes came back to the South Addition rental to fix it up for his former landlord. She thought that Keyes had built a new fence, done some painting and put in a new floor. These are all tasks that would come very easily for a professional carpenter. The neighbor says Keyes began his company, Keyes Construction, while living in the house across the street.

Oh, I see. So they both lived in Anchorage...they were just IN Texas...I guess I understood it as he lived in Texas with Kimberly Anderson.  Guess not, they both live in Anchorage.  So, why were they in Texas?  Or was it just him?  Where was Kimberly?  Did she suspect anything?  What on earth is going on?  I am so confused right now.

A man arrested this week in Texas and linked to missing Anchorage 18-year-old Samantha Koenig is in federal custody awaiting transport back to Alaska, authorities say.

The man, Israel Keyes, is a person of interest in Koenig's apparent abduction, Anchorage police said. Keyes, 34, allegedly committed access device fraud.

Police say Koenig vanished the night of Feb. 1 at the end of her shift at a coffee hut in the Midtown parking lot of a fitness center. A surveillance video shows an armed man "significantly taller" that the 5-foot-5 Koenig force her from the small building, a detective said. They walked away, and nobody has reported seeing Koenig since.

The backpack was pink, Rhea said. She said Keyes, who seemed cooperative, was put in handcuffs and into the back of a police car. Two days later, police identified Keyes by name and said he was involved in Koenig's disappearance in Alaska.

So many questions.  Why was he in Texas?  Was he driving his own car or a rental?  Was Kimberly Anderson with him?  Who did the pink backpack belong to?  What evidence was in the car?  It looks like someone in Texas filed the complaint saying that Israel used his/her card.  Was he staying in Texas or passing through?  Was anyone with him?  If he was staying in Lufkin, what are his ties there?  How long had he been there?  And more...I am curious about this pink backpack now...hmmmm a child's or one that an older girl may carry around?  Is anyone missing in the area?  Did it belong to Samantha?

To James' knowledge, Samantha did not own a pink backpack.

"Sam grew out of backpacks years ago. She was into purses," he said.

One of the neighbors had said that there was a girl that lived with him and his girlfriend but they didn't know if it was his daughter or her's.  Maybe the backpack belonged to the child.

Admittedly she didn't know him that well. She didn't even remember the name of the woman who he lived with. But she did recall when they moved out. They left the neighborhood two or three years ago to move into a house over in Turnagain that the woman bought. About a month later she says Keyes came back to the South Addition rental to fix it up for his former landlord. She thought that Keyes had built a new fence, done some painting and put in a new floor. These are all tasks that would come very easily for a professional carpenter. The neighbor says Keyes began his company, Keyes Construction, while living in the house across the street.

The new flyer reads shows two prominent photos of Keyes along with information about his arrest last week in Texas.

A small group of volunteers gathered Monday at Common Grounds Espresso -- the site of Koenig's abduction -- where they picked up a stack of flyers and then fanned out across Anchorage and Eagle River, to tack the posters up at busy intersections and pass them out at storefronts.

 ::snipping2::Anchorage police and federal authorities would not comment on what evidence was recovered from Keyes' car in Texas, what led them to Keyes or why they think he traveled outside Alaska. For security reasons, the U.S. Marshals Service will not say when it expects to transport Keyes back to Alaska, where he owns a one-man carpentry business called Keyes Construction.

Texas and Anchorage police, the marshals, the FBI, Texas Rangers and Texas Highway Patrol are all involved in the case, Alaska U.S. Attorney Karen Loeffler said Friday.

"Everybody's biggest concern is Ms. Koenig, of course. And we're working together as hard we can," Loeffler said.

According to a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in East Texas, Keyes appeared in court Friday and waived his right to a preliminary hearing, which will likely be held in Alaska at a later date.

"He agreed to detention and removal to Alaska. So it's out of our hands now," said the spokeswoman, Davilyn Walston.

The Marshals Service said it could take weeks for Keyes to arrive in Alaska, depending on its transport schedule.

APD Investigating Human Remains Found Near Eklutna Lake

ANCHORAGE, Alaska—

The Anchorage Police Department says detectives are investigating human remains found Tuesday near Eklutna Lake, but have not said whether the case is related to the Feb. 1 abduction of barista Samantha Koenig.

APD spokeswoman Marlene Lammers told Channel 2 she spoke with Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz, head of the department's homicide unit, who confirmed that human remains have been found and a death investigation is in progress.

When asked if the death investigation into the remains is related to the Koenig case, Lammers said, "I have no idea at this time."

Investigators at the scene said they couldn't yet identify the gender of the remains or how long they'd been there, but said a snowshoer discovered the remains and called police at about 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say early autopsy results Wednesday determined that the body found Tuesday night off Eklutna Lake Road was that of a male.

The man's identity and cause of death remain unknown, said police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker. It could be days before his name is released, Parker said.

Confirmation of the body's gender Wednesday came just before noon after much speculation that the remains -- discovered in woods by a person snowshoeing about 5 p.m. Tuesday -- were those of missing 18-year-old Samantha Koenig.

Obviously, there are quite a few that can be ruled out.  It is also not unusual for someone to come into town from a village and be out of touch with relatives and be missing for a while, before it is reported.  At least once a year, it seems like someone comes up here and goes missing while visiting.

The body found Tuesday night near Eklutna Lake is that of a Houston man missing since December and he was the victim of homicide, Alaska State Troopers said Thursday.

Troopers reported Loy Suthammavong, 30, missing on Dec. 6 after his family had not seen him for several days, troopers said in a written statement. That same day, as investigators were looking for Suthammavong, police officers and firefighters found a vehicle on fire in Anchorage that was later determined to belong to Suthammavong, troopers said.

Investigators said the fire was arson, and an autopsy this week showed that Suthammavong was the victim of a homicide, troopers said. A person on snowshoes found his body Tuesday night two or three miles down Eklutna Lake Road.

"From the onset, circumstances surrounding the apparent disappearance of Suthammavong (were) suspicious and resulted in investigators considering a variety of factors," the troopers wrote in the statement.

One factor included Suthammavong's conviction on two felony drug charges, troopers said.

According to an FBI agent's affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Alaska and made public Thursday, a stolen debit card found on Keyes was used in Anchorage hours after Koenig's disappearance. The card, from an unnamed man's bank account, was used again in several more transactions for a total $2,440 in cash disbursed, the affidavit says.

At 3 a.m. on Feb. 2, a man described as "Person A" in the affidavit reported seeing an unknown man wearing a ski mask and dark clothes going through his vehicle, the affidavit says. The alleged robbery victim said his Credit Union 1 debit card was missing afterward and that he had not given it to anyone or given anyone permission to use it. Person A's gender is described as male in the FBI agent's affidavit.

A light-skinned, muscular man tried to use the card to withdraw $600 at an automated teller machine in Midtown Anchorage about 10:15 p.m. on Feb. 28, but the transaction was rejected because it exceeded the daily withdrawal limit, the affidavit says. About two hours later, a man fitting a similar description used the card to withdraw $500 from an ATM in Spenard, the document says. The following day, he withdrew $500 from an ATM in East Anchorage, the document says.

A week later, the card was being used in the Lower 48 to steal cash again, according to the affidavit.

On March 7, just before midnight, a "light-skinned male adult with a muscular build" in a gray hooded sweatshirt, glasses, gray ski mask and gloves withdrew $400 from an ATM in Willcox, Ariz., according to the affidavit. He was seen driving what appeared to be a white Ford Focus sedan, the affidavit says. Willcox is along Interstate 10 east of Tuscon.

The next day, at about 1:30 a.m., a man with a similar description tried to withdraw another $400 in Lordsburg, N.M., also along I-10, but again the withdrawal was declined because it exceeded the daily limit, according to the affidavit. He used the same ATM to check the account's balance and found that $3,598.91 remained in the account, the charges say. Video showed the man was wearing similar clothing as in the Arizona withdrawal and was driving the same car, the affidavit says.

On March 10 at about 2:20 a.m., wearing the same clothes, the man used the stolen bank card again to get $480 in Humble City, Texas, north of Houston. He made another withdrawal in Shepherd, Texas, farther north, for the same amount on March 12, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit says law enforcement spotted the white sedan the next day at a hotel in Lufkin, Texas, which is farther north. They watched a man -- later identified as the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Keyes -- leave a room, put some personal items in the car's trunk, then drive away, the affidavit says. A Texas State Highway Patrol Officer stopped the car for speeding in Lufkin, and Keyes told the officer he'd flown from Anchorage to Las Vegas on March 7, the affidavit says.

"Keyes was unable to describe the route he drove or explain why he elected to travel in this manner, given that he was reportedly going to a wedding in Wells, Texas. There were rolls of rubber-banded cash on the floorboard of the car and maps with highlighted routes from north to south through California and highlighted areas in Arizona and New Mexico. In the trunk, officers found a gray, hooded sweatshirt, glasses and a piece of gray T-shirt cut to make a face mask and other clothing that matched those worn during the withdrawals in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Ok, I have a couple of questions. 

 If person "A" saw perp going through his car and found that his Debit card was missing,
 why didn't person "A" notify the Credit union of the theft and have the card canceled.

 How did perp withdraw any money unless he also had the PIN number?

This sounds like a scam type deal that one of my clients (criminal offender) told me about.  They say that they would allow someone else to take their card (with pin number) and dress up in a disguise and take money out of their accounts.  After a bit they would report it stolen and refute those charges and get their money back from the bank. 

Because how else would the guy have his pin number?  That makes no sense.  You have to have a pin number to withdraw money, right?  What was it in the car with the card?  No.

Also, the man that was found with his car burned is from Houston, Texas?  Is that correct.  What a coincidence.

No, it's Houston, AK.  There are lots of things that don't make sense about this case......

The process of transferring Israel Keyes, the “person of interest” in the abduction of 18-year-old barista Samantha Koenig arrested earlier this month in Texas, from Texas to Alaska has begun according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Rochelle Liedike, a spokesperson for the Alaska office of the USMS, said Friday afternoon that specifics of Keyes’ transportation -- including when he might leave a federal facility in Beaumont, Texas, how he’s traveling and when he’s expected to arrive -- are not being released for security reasons.

Keyes, 34, was arrested March 13 in Lufkin, Texas by local law-enforcement authorities in conjunction with the Anchorage Police Department and the FBI. APD Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz, the head of the department's homicide unit, told Channel 2 later that week that investigators believed Keyes was "the main figure" in Koenig's abduction.
Keyes is being held on federal charges of access device fraud, an offense typically conducted during credit-card and debit-card thefts. Court documents from Keyes’ Thursday indictment claim he repeatedly withdrew and attempted to withdraw funds from a debit card he allegedly stole from a man’s vehicle -- hours after Anchorage police say Koenig was abducted from Common Grounds Espresso by an armed man.

Koenig's father, James Koenig, told Channel 2 Friday that the debit card is not his, and that he has no idea whose it may be.

Markiewicz told Channel 2 there is an "important reason" Koenig is not mentioned in those court documents, but would not comment on what that reason is.  Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Fields added, "That (Keyes') arrest was made in conjunction with the investigation.  But the charge that was filed consists of fraud with an access device."

According to an FBI agent's affidavit, Keyes was caught in Lufkin, Texas, on March 13 with a debit card stolen from an unnamed man -- "Person A" -- hours after Koenig was forced from a Midtown coffee hut by an armed man. The card had been used in Anchorage to make cash withdrawals or attempted withdrawals and later used in New Mexico, Arizona and Texas, the affidavit says. When he was arrested, Keyes had a mask and clothes matching those worn by the suspect, seen on surveillance video at several ATMs in the Lower 48, according to the affidavit. Koenig's father, James Koenig, said Friday that the card is not his and that he doesn't know who owns the card.

Asked if he had any information on how his daughter might have known Keyes, James Koenig responded, "Sam does not know him. Period."

One article claims the alleged stolen card was used hours after Samantha went missing.  Another states the card was stolen just hours after she went missing.

If one witnessed their car being robbed, wouldn't would call the police while the crime was ongoing?

If one knew their CC was missing, wouldn't one report it ASAP, unless it was reported and then was used as bait to trap the thief?

The articles don't make it clear if the person who committed the alleged burglaring of the car was the same person they thought was using the card to make illegal withdrawals.

If the burglar of the car and the thief making the illegal withdrawals are the same person, why would they wait almost 3 weeks in between stealing the card and using it for the first time?

Could the credit card and its PIN be a payoff of some sort?

There are more questions than answers, but LE seems to be playing it close to its vest.

Seems that they did allow this man to keep withdrawing money until they could find him/her?  I'm thinking that the reason for Keyes to wear a mask to steal this card is that he knew where this card was kept and knew the info on it because he might have been friends with this person prior to?  Unless the skimming tactic was used like suggested in previous posts how would a stranger know your PIN?

Keyes was a construction worker who did repair jobs.  Maybe the card was taken from a project he'd recently completed.  Remember LE asking for anyone who'd employed him since January to contact them?  Maybe there is a connection there.  The person may not have realized that the card was missing until the Feb billing cycle or hearing from LE.  I'm thinking that he may've worked some jobs where there was no one at home during the days and he was left alone to snoop at his leisure.

That makes sense too...keep letting him withdraw so that they can find him; however, how did he know the pin?

The FBI and the Anchorage Police Department Homicide Detectives are asking the public for any information related to the Samantha Koenig abduction case.

Investigators have released new photos of the person of interest in the case, Israel Keyes, and his work truck. Anchorage Police have said that Keyes is the "main player" in Koenig's disappearance. Police believe the white Chevy full-sized extended cab truck was used by the business, Keyes' Construction, which he owned and operated.

  On Friday, the U.S. Marshal's Service confirmed he was en route to Alaska to face a fraud charge.  Police said the charge is in connection to the Koenig case.

Israel Keyes was arraigned on a charge of access device fraud this afternoon in federal court in Anchorage.

Keyes pleaded not guilty to the fraud charge and told a judge he was broke. According to an FBI agent’s affidavit, Keyes took money from another man’s bank account using a stolen bank card. He was caught in Lufkin, Tex., with the card and rolls of cash.

Judge John Roberts appointed Keyes a public defender after reviewing Keyes’ financial statement and asking some questions.

Keyes told the judge his bank account was empty. When the judge asked if Keyes had any cash, he said he didn’t know.

“I’m not aware of how much cash I have at this time, your honor,” Keyes said. “I would say my account is probably overdrawn at this point.”

A contractor who operated under the name Keyes Construction, Keyes told the court on Tuesday that he was in debt and his checking account was likely overdrawn. He added that his assets amounted only to several thousand dollars worth of tools and "a couple thousand" more that he said he might be able to get for his trailer -- but even if he sold it all, it wouldn't be enough to pay off his debts.

During the arraignment, it also was revealed that Keyes has 10-year-old daughter.

U.S. Attorney for Alaska Karen Loeffler said investigators were not trying to obstruct the flow of information, but because of the sensitive and ongoing nature of the case, were wary of providing too many specifics.

"We're not giving you details on the investigation because ... we're still looking for Ms. Koenig" and "things that aren't public and aren't advised in court, we're not going to put out there because the investigation is still ongoing."

Had Keyes's attorney sought bail for his client, new details would have been released about the case. To make sure Keyes stays put and isn't released, prosecutors were prepared to let an investigator take the witness stand and demonstrate why Keyes is a both a flight risk and a danger to the community. But because Keyes's newly appointed defense attorney didn't immediately take up that fight, there was no need for prosecutors to show their hand -- yet.

"We don't have all the details yet," Loeffler said. "And what we don't have is Ms. Koenig."

FBI seizes outbuilding from Keyes home

Federal agents tonight seized a shed from the Turnagain home of Israel Keyes, the man police linked to the abduction of Samantha Koenig.

A man participating in the Friday night seizure at Spurr Lane, a dead-end street off of Clay Products Drive near West Northern Lights Boulevard, confirmed the dozen or so plainclothes men and women there were with the FBI. He declined to comment further, and the FBI personnel did not respond to questions.

Neighbors said about 10 p.m. a flatbed truck pulled in front of the house. Men unloaded a forklift from the back of the truck and went to work shoveling snow off what looked to be a roughly 6-foot by 8-foot metal shed with green trim.

Later, reporters watched as a forklift operator picked up the shed and backed slowly out of the short driveway while four men held the shed steady. At one point, a woman inside the house where police say Keyes lived poked her head out to quiet a barking dog. Lights were on in the blue house and blinds covered all its windows.

The forklift operator carefully loaded the shed on the truck, and after blocking the base and strapping it down, the truck backed out of Spurr Lane and drove to the FBI's headquarters in downtown Anchorage.

Anchorage police and federal agents Saturday examined a shed seized the night before from the home of Israel Keyes as part of an investigation into Keyes' possible involvement in the disappearance of Samantha Koenig, the FBI said.
The Anchorage Police Department and FBI are collaborating on the Koenig case, said FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez.

"Obviously we're processing the shed with APD. This is obviously tied to the abduction of Samantha Koenig," Gonzalez said. "This is a joint investigation. We're working very closely with each other."

"Unfortunately, because it's still ongoing, we're just limited about what we can say. Clearly, we'll state the obvious," he said.

Neither Gonzalez, the FBI spokesman, nor police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker would comment on why the shed was taken or what is inside it. Parker said it is common, when possible, to seize something as large as a shed or a vehicle so investigators can transport it for analysis in a controlled environment.

Gonzalez said he was unaware of anything else taken from the property.

Investigators say a Matanuska Lake crime scene investigation Monday is related to the abduction of 18-year-old barista Samantha Koenig.

The Anchorage Police Department, Alaska State Troopers and the FBI were at Matanuska Lake, off the Glenn Highway near the Palmer-Wasilla Highway interchange and the Matanuska-Susitna Regional Hospital, since mid-morning Monday. FBI spokesperson Darrin Jones confirmed that authorities were conducting an investigation that was related to Koenig’s Feb. 1 abduction.

Steven Hebbe, APD’s deputy chief of operations, told Channel 2 that officials were following up on leads in the Koenig case, and are searching for evidence.

Access to the lake was blocked off, but several undercover APD vehicles and a U-Haul van that may or may not have been related to the investigation were present.

A wide area was roped off with crime-scene tape, and several marker cones had been placed on the ground.

It was not immediately clear what the developments are.

A number of police investigators could be seen on the frozen surface of Matanuska Lake, near the intersection of the Glenn and Parks highways, on Monday afternoon. They would not discuss what they were doing and were keeping people away from the area.

Police find body they believe is abducted barista Samantha Koenig

More than two months after Samantha Koenig was abducted from the coffee stand where she worked, investigators announced on Monday that they had found what they believe to be Koenig’s body at Matanuska Lake off the Glenn Highway near Wasilla.

Anchorage police chief Mark Mew said a team of forensic divers discovered the body.

Mew added that investigators believe Koenig died “within hours” of her Feb. 1 abduction, and they are confident they have Koenig’s kidnapper in custody. The investigation however, will continue.

Mew offered condolences to Koenig’s family, as did FBI special agent in charge Mary Rook, who expressed thanks to investigators from Alaska to Texas, where the only person who police have publicly stated is tied to Koenig’s abduction, 35-year-old Israel Keyes, was arrested.

“Although some questions have been answered today, I know those answers offer little consolation for the Koenig family and many questions remain,” Rook said.

No matter who was first. Samantha's family lost first. Her friends. Her co-workers. There's a photo of the location where she was found if you go to this article link and the photo is on the right side.  It's such a remote location, and it's said in the articles divers located her body, so I tend to agree with you at this time that Israel Keyes gave the location.  I guess we'll find out the sad details of this senseless murder  soon.   ::crymonkey2::

Anchorage police announced Monday evening that a body believed to be that of missing barista Samantha Koenig was found during a crime-scene investigation in Matanuska Lake, apparently ending a months-long mystery that has gripped the city and attracted national coverage.

In a joint appearance with FBI officials at APD headquarters, APD Chief Mark Mew said divers discovered the body Monday morning during an investigation at the lake. The search drew numerous members of APD, the Alaska State Troopers and FBI to the scene, which lies off the Glenn Highway near the Palmer-Wasilla Highway interchange and the Matanuska-Susitna Regional Hospital. State medical examiners will verify the identity of the body.

Mary Rook, special agent in charge of the FBI's Anchorage Division, said investigators believed there was no connection between the abductor and the Koenig family. She credited callers ans officials who provided information in the case from Alaska, as well as the Lower 48, for their role in the investigation.

"We received hundreds of phone calls from people in Anchorage and from many locations across the Lower 48," Rook said. "Likewise, when assistance was required in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, local, state and federal authorities moved quickly to support and move this investigation forward. In fact, were it not for the efforts of several very alert and dedicated Texas law enforcement officers, Samantha's abductor may still be at large."

Investigators had been at the lake since mid-morning Monday, where FBI spokesperson Darrin Jones confirmed that authorities were conducting an investigation that was related to Koenig’s Feb. 1 abduction.

Access to the lake was blocked off, but several undercover APD vehicles and the department's Major Crime Scene Unit van were present. A wide area was roped off with crime-scene tape, and several marker cones had been placed on the ground.

At Monday's press conference, Rook again asked the community for further information relating to a white Chevrolet pickup truck Keyes drove as part of his business, Keyes Construction, as well as tips from anybody who helped Keyes remove a large utility rack from the vehicle or saw it in the vicinity of Common Grounds Espresso on Feb. 1.
"We would like to reiterate our request for information relative to the movement of the white pickup truck," Rook said. "Specifically, we want to hear from anyone who may have seen the truck in the vicinity of Matanuska Lake."

That crossed my mind too and I guess we'll find out later.  I'm hoping there was a tip or some tips that led to the lake.  Maybe someone saw his truck in the area.    But LE is still looking for anyone that may have seen his white truck around the lake, so I just don't know.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The body of a missing 18-year-old barista was found in a lake Monday, almost two months to the day she was last seen on a surveillance camera video being led away from the coffee shack where she worked, Anchorage Police Chief Mark Mew said.

The state medical examiner will conduct an autopsy, which will include verification of identity, he said.

"Investigators believe Samantha died within hours of her abduction," Mew said, adding the investigation is ongoing.

"Investigators further believe the person responsible for Samantha's death acted alone, and we are confident that we have that person in custody," Mew said.

When Keyes, the owner of an Anchorage construction company, was transferred to Alaska by federal marshals, Koenig's father said she did not know Keyes. James Koenig told the Anchorage Daily News he believes his daughter was the victim of a random abduction.

Mary Rook, the FBI's special agent in charge, confirmed the apparently chance nature of the abduction.

"Investigators found no direct association between the abductor and Samantha or any member of her family," Rook said at the news conference. "I believe it was largely the dissociative nature of this crime that so perplexed investigators, at least initially."

akmom, I really know how you feel.  I too (as well as other monkeys) have helped search only to have the precious child be dead.  It is a dreadful feeling.  But please don't give up hope on people.  Not all people are bad and there are so many good, decent folks in this world.  Unfortunately, we don't often hear about the fantastic children, just the ones who are missing, dead, or perform poorly.  Hope springs eternal.  It did take me a while to follow another case . . . but we are here (as you know) giving voice to those who no longer (or for at least a while), can no longer speak for themselves.  Be of good courage.

I have been wondering that as well.  Seems impossible that this would be his first time.  Difficult to imagine a person wakes up one day and decides out of the blue to kill (and God only know what else) someone.  And how would someone hide that tendency from those closest to him.  Don't much care what happens to him as long as he suffers greatly each and every second of his miserable existence.

CRIME SCENE ON THE LAKE

Authorities didn't reveal how they knew to look under the ice at Matanuska Lake. The lake, part of the Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area, is about 35 miles north of Anchorage near the intersection of the Parks and Glenn highways.

On Monday afternoon, investigators could be seen moving on the ice. They used snowmachines and ATVs to make runs between a parking lot staging area and the crime scene investigative site about 400 yards away on the lake's frozen surface. Authorities blocked off public access to the lake. .

Several tents and other portable structures, including a red one that resembled an ice-fishing shelter, ringed a triangle-shaped hole in the ice that observers estimated at about 4 feet long on each side. Investigators used chain saws to cut away at the ice.

At around 7:30 p.m., two divers lowered themselves into the hole. Investigators then moved two white tents over that spot. At 8:20 p.m., a snowmachine pulling a long, covered sled left the white tents and headed across the lake to the parking lot.

At the sun set, investigators began breaking down the tents. At 9 p.m., the Anchorage Police Department's big blue mobile crime scene unit drove away..

I'm hoping for lots of dna since Sam's remains were found under ice.  Let this be a slam-dunk for the state.

The pictures were so heartbreaking...for some reason seeing them taking down the missing person sign really got me.  I cannot imagine what James is going through right now...this is so heartbreaking...I would not be surprised if he tries to go after him during the trial...he is a very vocal man.  I say let him at the scum.  Why would he do this?  Did he just drive through to get some coffee and she caught his eye so he decided to take her?  I just don't get all of these sickos...just today we found that our local Game Bus/Van (one that you rent for parties that has the game systems hooked up and all) was used to molest kids.  I have seen it at different school events and parties.  Ugh...I wish there were some sort of screening at birth that said this child is going to grow up to murder and/or molest.

Sad, sad day for the people of Anchorage and Samantha's father.  The light of his life is gone and my heart breaks for him.

What a blessing that this case was solved, though.  Too many remain unsolved and at least this time the wicked is not left free to do this again.

He probably drove through her stand and had previously noticed her.  He knew what time the shack closed and knew the camera was there and also knew the streets would likely be empty.  This was planned, IMO.

There is nothing wrong with that.  Your heart was in the right place.

And I can't help but believe that every one of us that CARE, at least worry those who are so evil just a little bit.  We might not be able to stop them, but we can at least make them uncomfortable knowing that we're determined not to let them get away with it!

Federal prosecutors say it will be at least a couple of weeks before much new information about the abduction and killing of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig becomes public.

An FBI forensic dive team discovered her body Monday under the ice at Matanuska Lake, north of Anchorage in the Mat-Su Borough near the intersection of the Glenn and Parks highways.

Anchorage police and FBI agents are jointly investigating the case.

Neither of the agencies involved will say how they zeroed in on the spot on the lake where Koenig's body was found, nor how they linked her abduction to Israel Keyes, an Anchorage self-employed carpenter jailed without bail last month on a fraud charge.

Authorities say he is directly tied to Koenig's disappearance but he hasn't been charged with her kidnapping or death.

Police Chief Mark Mew on Monday said investigators believe the person who killed Koenig acted alone, and that they are confident he is in custody.

New details about what happened to Koenig are not expected to emerge unless additional charges are filed, authorities said.

"Until and unless there are charges, there's nothing else that we are going to comment on," U.S. Attorney Karen Loeffler said Tuesday. "We have that ethical obligation. ... We don't try to go out and say 'this is what the person did,' before they are charged. That's not fair."

A federal grand jury next convenes in Anchorage in a couple of weeks.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Anchorage police are working with the FBI to build a case against Israel Keyes, the man they believe is responsible for 18-year-old barista Samantha Koenig's disappearance and death.

Keyes won’t be named a formal suspect until he's actually charged, and authorities say that could take a few weeks.

In the Mat-Su Valley, the Matanuska Lake Recreation Area -- where authorities say a body believed to be Koenig's was found Monday -- has reopened. A few hundred yards out onto the ice, a simple memorial of flowers marks the spot where police recovered the remains.

Parker said investigators “knew where they were going” when they descended on the lake Monday. They likely received information that led them to a specific area, though they won't say who if anyone tipped them off, or how they obtained that information.

Neither APD nor the FBI are actively searching for any other person of interest, or any other individual who may have abducted Koenig or caused her death. They say they're quite sure Keyes is responsible and he is already in custody, facing federal fraud charges.

Once investigators have gathered evidence and information related to the case they’ll hand things over to the U.S. Attorney's office or the Alaska Attorney General's office -- perhaps even both.

A MAJOR EFFORT

The operation to find and recover the body relied on the FBI's highly specialized forensic dive team.

Twelve people from the FBI, including nine divers, came from the Lower 48 for the search, said Charles "Bart" Bartenfeld, an FBI agent based in Quantico, Va., and program manager of what the FBI calls its Underwater Search and Evidence Response Team.

Members of the team are stationed in four of the FBI's biggest offices -- Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C., and Miami -- and join up for operations and training. All but the leaders also carry a regular caseload.

Usually the divers get weeks or even months of notice before going into the field, Bartenfeld said. Federal cases typically take a long time, and often divers are following up on old leads. They may be looking for weapons thrown into the water or trying to recover drugs from semi-submersible vessels at the bottom of the sea.

Bobby Chacon, an FBI agent and senior team leader of the Los Angeles dive unit, supervised Monday's dive. He spent four months diving in the Atlantic Ocean to recover bodies and airplane debris from the 1996 crash of TWA Flight 800 off Long Island.

Both Chacon and Bartenfeld went to Iraq to check a canal for an AK-47 suspected of being used in the 2006 rape of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the murder of her and her family. The person whose tip drew them there later recanted.

This time, Bartenfeld got the request from Anchorage to help on the Koenig case Friday night, and was told "we need you now." By Saturday, they were mobilizing.

ICE DIVING IN MURKY LAKE

Before a pair of divers went into the water Monday, the team used sonar and a remotely operated vehicle to look under the ice, Bartenfeld said. Investigators cut a dive hole through ice 2 1/2- to 3-feet thick.

"If you can cut down on the amount of work in the water, that's good. You're working in an environment that's hostile to human life," said Chacon, who's been diving for the FBI for 17 years, longer than any other agent.

That evening, Bartenfeld and another diver slipped into the murky, dark lake water. They couldn't see, but they were guided by the sonar, he said. They felt well-prepared. They are ice-diving certified and use layers of extra FBI procedure to ensure safety, Chacon said.

The divers were tethered to land through hoses that supplied air from a surface tank and provided a channel for communications and depth measurements. They wore helmets to protect their heads from the cold and ice.

They didn't have to dive deep, maybe 40 feet. They stayed in the water just under an hour.

Still wonder what led them to the lake...confession...receipt from being in the immediate area on or around the date of Samantha's abduction...pings from a cellphone?
