It's odd,it was daytime,kids everywhere,LE and people everywhere shortly after and through the night.It just seems she went with someone she knew or had seen before.Maybe someone watching the family,possibly seeing the mother's myspace party pics or an acquaintance of family.I hate myspace,I think people are too liberal with thier lives and even the boyfriend's myspace site saying his favorite movies are porn,come on.If you have a name and your location,all people have to do is look up where you live online.Not that it has anything to do with what happened,but it could.People gather all these people up on myspace and facebook friends list you don't even know,just to have the most number of friends and you tell everything you do everyday,good grief,it's stupid.

Investigators of Florida girl's death alerted about Albany arrest

The Dougherty district attorney confirmed today that Clay County, Fla., sheriff's investigators and the FBI have been made aware of the arrest of a man here who Edwards thinks could be linked to the death of a Florida girl, though the prosecutor says there is no evidence directly linking him to the girl.

Dougherty District Attorney Greg Edwards said that his office has forwarded the information to the authorities in Florida on Kenneth Kellam, who was arrested here Tuesday after following two elementary school boys home. Edwards says it's "geographically feasible" that Kellam could have a connection to the death of Somer Thompson in Florida.

"It's geographically feasible that he could have a connection to that case, and his M.O. is similar," Edwards said. "So we have passed the information along to the proper authorities in Florida and the FBI has taken an interest."

Edwards was quick to say there is no direct link between Kellam and the Florida slaying, adding that local authorities have acted out of due diligence to notify authorities in Florida.

"We've been told they've received more than 1,500 tips in that case and this may just be another one, but we have the obligation to report it," Edwards said.

FBI Special Agent Stephen Emmett refused today to comment on what he said were the "day-to-day" operations of investigators and would not confirm whether the FBI had interviewed Kellam at the Dougherty County Jail.

This morning, Kellam was denied bond by Magistrate Victoria Darrisaw and was remanded to the custody of the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities in Charlton County in Southeast Georgia confirmed last week that the remains of a young girl discovered in a landfill there were those of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, who police believe was abducted Oct. 19 while walking home from school.

Kellam was released from the Florida prison system in 2008 and was required to register as a sex offender.

I think Somer was a lonesome child, if I were Somer I would miss my Daddy who mommy is separated from and I would miss Auntie
who is in N.C.  Somer may have been used to military bases, where people were friendly and I would say trustworthy. Somer sounds
to me like she didn't want to go home, what I read about B.S. how the mom has a list of Somer's friends and would call looking for her. Mom was living with a stranger and a stranger-door greeter, man, I never grew up with these kind of folks. IMO

I hear ya, Seahorse, and that may well be the case.

OR ...she was just a very gregarious, curious, energetic child who wanted to meet everyone and be friends with everyone. Her mother kept mentioning (almost too much, IMO) how Somer "never met a stranger."

I can see it both ways, personally.

More charges filed against sex offender

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Dougherty County School Police say a registered sex offender planned to snatch and sexually assault two fourth grade boys.

36-year old Kenneth Kellam is now formally charged with two counts each of attempting to entice a child for indecent purposes, attempted child molestation, atemtped false imprisonment, and attempted aggravated sodomy.

Kellam was led into court in handcuffs and shackles  for his first appearance.  He was ordered held without bond.

Last week he tried to get 9 and 10-year old brothers to get into his van as they walked home from school. He was arrested Monday when he approached them again.

They confiscated evidence from Kellam's van, but they will not say what that evidence is.

Dougherty County School Police Chief Troy Conley said  "Some findings that were revealed through the course of the investigation has helped us piece together the entire aspects of what his intentions were."

School Police are contacting investigators in Tifton and several cities in Florida where Kellam has lived to give them information they learned from Kellam's interview.

I have not followed this case from the beginning but i did ask before about wheter or not she was in a garbage bag and a poster here said no because they could see her legs sticking out of the pile.... i don't know if that is accurate or not but if it is then it says to me dumpster as opposed to curbside pickup

so he was ballsy enough to go after 2 at a time and then the same 2 later on and they were 9 and 10 big enough to put up a fight... i bet the evidence was some sort of a restraint in case the 2 got out of hand... and i wonder if he planned to come more forceful the 2nd time or if he was hoping his repoire from the last time would get the 2 in...
either way ballsy... wonder what he would have done if 1 boy went with him willingly and the other didn't

and by ballsy i guess i kind of mean sloppy.... not caring about witnesses new neighborhood where the le was made aware of his new residence... people get sloppy /ballsy like this when they are spinning out of control... like nuts and off their meds manic as opposed to depressed... or have nothing left to lose...
one thing is for sure these people that don't offend everyday it is because something triggers them to re-offend stress,fear,loss,etc.
which leads me to wonder how the kuhn perv was feeling after his disabled,sick,girlfriend died.... imo if you date someone impared physically like that late on in life and especially throwing in the sex offender characteristic then you probably have severe etipus (<- don't know how to spell that) issues... clingy needy mother that you are unable to satisfy etc. and when you fill the void that your mother left with a girlfriend and then you lose the girlfriend too the chit would most likely hit the fan in your head... jmo and i am in no way experienced enough to be making these assumptions ... but that's what i do  ::MonkeyCool::

As far as I know, the details have not been released.

The sheriff said that her body was "partially covered" and that all they could see were the lower extremeties. He stated this at the 4 PM briefing on Oct. 21, the afternoon her body was located.

so if she was identified by the clothing she was wearing when found.. then what a re-dress? no undressing at all?if a re-dress that shows remorse after the fact by someone who is actually ashamed of what they did not a psycho who leaves his victim naked to cause them more shame. plus why a redress that would help to further identify her instead of dumping the clothes somewhere else? if a re-dress by someone capable of remorse then why just dump her in the trash instead of letting her body be found "honorably"

Hi Monkeys, hope you are doing well.

Did anyone catch Mike Galanos Prime News on HLN today? He had an FBI agent on to talk about Somer's case. I can't find the transcript or video but it was the first time I have heard anyone in the news talk about this case the way I feel about it...Mike asked the FBI agent Brent (?) if this seemed like an experienced predator and he said "No, not at all." I am paraphrasing but he said what MANY of us have said here--it is unusual for these experienced predators to take a child in broad daylight, in a crowded area, and then put the body in the local trash within a very short period of time. I wish I could remember exactly what he said, but he talked about the fact that he thinks they should be looking closer at family, friends, and neighbors and looking at the family home as a possible crime scene. He wasn't accusing the family, but he sounded like he knew his "stuff."

Lord knows the LE are working hard. And I am sure they are looking at all angles. But I have to say I'm very disappointed at the way the local media has been handling this case. They aren't doing investigative reporting. It's all about the vigils, fundraisers, etc. Believe me, I am for charity and kindness 100%. I am all about communities supporting each other. But there is a buzz around town about people wondering why the family needs this much money, what it will be used for, who is controlling it.

In other recent cases of this type around the country, were there a lot of fundraisers? I don't recall, to be honest. I usually hear about donations for sick children or orphaned children. 

Just from memory, the community has raised 20000.00 at a carnival, there were a couple motorcycle rides to raise money, there was a billiards tournament, and various other fundraisers. This is not including the fundraisers for the reward money--this is all money going directly to Somer's family. As we've learned, the funeral expenses, the hotel accommodations, etc were all paid for by area businesses.

No one argues that Diena and the rest of the family are suffering very much. She'll need counseling (which the area hospice will provide for free). But people are questioning why this much money is going directly to the family rather than to a charity in Somer's honor. The state pays victims a certain amount for related expenses. Also, there's life insurance, short term disability, and so on. Since Somer's dad was military, there may be money from that.

PLEASE don't think I am being mean. I am writing this out of concern for other families who have had extreme tragedies but maybe aren't as vocal or camera friendly as Diena is able to be. I am thinking of minorities in particular...

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - When Kenneth Kellam moved into a homeless shelter in South Georgia, they ran a criminal background check. It didn't reveal his record since those cases were from Florida.

We now know that while living at the shelter, Kellam was investigated for approaching a young boy in a Tifton neighborhood in the same manner two Albany boys claim he approached them.

We know that Kenneth Kellam's Method of operation is consistent. When he was convicted in 2003, it was for approaching two young boys and telling them he wanted them to take a look at some pictures.

That's the same thing he told two young boys here, and the same message he had for a 12-year-old in Tifton several months ago.

I spent 10 minutes looking at his deceased girlfriends memorial slideshow and i think it is weird he was only possibly in 1 out 0f prob 30 or more pictures and he was surrounded by kids... are all s/o required to stay away from kids?
can we find out the age of his victim? i know up here in mass we have different age laws like a person under 12 a person under 16 etc... but as far as i can tell florida is one of those under 18 no dice law states... i would liketo know if he was molesting a 17 year old or a 7 year old... it does make a diffrence

Somer Thompson: FBI hunts for clues in Georgia landfill

Everything from taking crime scene photographs to lifting fingerprints

When FBI agent Larry Meyer heard that police found Somer Thompson’s body in a Georgia landfill last week, he mobilized a group of co-workers whose gruesome, painstaking work may reveal her killer.

Some were gun-toting agents who regularly hunt criminals on the streets of North Florida. Others included FBI support staff whose full-time jobs entail photography and data analysis.

They are all part of the Jacksonville-based FBI Evidence Response Team, a highly trained group of forensics-fascinated folk who could run circles around any CSI television star, though it’ll take more than an hour.

The team put their game faces on when they got to the Folkston landfill, focusing on finding even the smallest clue that could solve the case. It was only days later that some felt the emotional drain of recovering the body of the 7-year-old Orange Park girl.

Alex Silverstein felt it on his first day off.

“I probably hugged and kissed my kids more in that one day than I have probably in a month,” said Silverstein, 39, a 13-year agent and father of two.

Angela Hill felt it when she set eyes on her infant son. While Silverstein is a veteran of body recoveries, having worked as part of a team at the Pentagon after 9/11, this was Hill’s first.

“It’s not an easy thing to do, knowing it’s an innocent child,” said Hill, 30, an agent for 3 1/2 years. “But it’s for a greater purpose: To find evidence; to get some answers.”

The 16-person team seeks those answers through everything from taking crime scene photographs to lifting fingerprints. Their arsenal includes special lighting that spots invisible bodily fluids; a kit that lifts dust prints from a surface using an electromagnetic charge; and a machine that can vacuum human scent that is then tracked by bloodhounds.

They have a stocked equipment van and a high-tech command center vehicle. They also have a pipeline into the FBI’s state-of-the-art laboratory in Quantico, Va., where some of the evidence collected in Somer’s case is being analyzed.

But it’s the people on the team and their drive to help solve cases that make the biggest difference, said Meyer, the senior team leader and a 23-year agent.

“There’s a motivation to do more than the regular job,” said Meyer, 50.

FBI agents, analysts and other support staff who volunteer for the team get two weeks of forensics training and take follow-up classes. They are responsible for scenes on federal property and in FBI cases, such as collection of evidence during search warrants. They can spend upwards of half their normal work week on a case such as Somer’s.

They also assist smaller police agencies with evidence collection and body recovery, including another Clay County case this year in which the buried remains of a murder victim were being search for in Keystone Heights nearly 30 years after the slaying.

“I have a great deal of confidence in them,” Clay Sheriff Rick Beseler said.

Meyer said the team spent about six hours recovering Somer’s body and evidence around her, then returned two days later to collect more. They were joined at the landfill by Clay detectives and agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

“At first it was a great disappointment because we all hoped to find her alive,” Meyer said.

“Then when we got up there, as emotional as it was for everyone, we had to get the job done.”

Team members also worked with Clay detectives and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement at a property on Gano Avenue where Somer disappeared.

Though the team couldn’t discuss details of the case, members said they are hopeful their work will make a difference.

“Bring people to justice. There is no more noble cause than doing that,” Silverstein said.

sorry to mention this again because like i said it is rumor and it makes me sick even thinking about it but if true... why remove the fingers instead of the whole hand?
that is a double bladed sword (no pun intended and it makes me absolutely sick even thinking about this but...)
it is physically easier to cut through a finger as opposed to a wrist obviously smaller bones etc
but it is a severe sicko that can take the time and even go through with it to cut off 10 little fingers...

The Justice Coalition says a lot of people have been willing to part with their dollars in the name of Somer Thompson.

The crime victims advocacy group is offering a $31,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in the murder.  And while the bulk of that came from the Allied Veterans of the World group, Justice Coalition Assistant Director Judith Chapple says many people have reached into their pockets.  "Old Navy did a fundraiser over the weekend where they asked us to come in and set up a table in their store," says Chapple.  $900 was raised there.

Another $5,000 in reward money is being offered by Crimestoppers.

I don't care if they raised 20.00, 20,000.00 or 200,000.00 and just gave it to them. The money was for them and it was given freely and from the hearts of the persons who gave it. The persons who gave it didn't ask for a receipt or an accounting for funds. Diena won't be able to work for a long time. She has 3 other kids at home and can you imagine going to work again and letting the kids walk to school ? There is a predator on the loose that just killed a precious girl. .
She is going to take years to heal up to possibly normal on a good day.
She has just had a traumatic shock. She just buried a child this week.
Pick on the predators whose pictures we see here. If it wasn't one of them, it was one just like them.
Sure look close to home. Neighbours, people passing through in the course of the day that you see every day. She doesn't owe us an explanation of how long she was with this boyfriend, why it looked as if she had makeup on or some smirk. Or anything.
She didn't set up some foundation for funds or sell stinky ANT bears. She didn't solicit funds from anyone. 

Samuel Thompson, father of Somer Thompson stated on NG that LE had informed him that there was some soot on Somer's body.

And when I heard about the burnt out abandoned house, I mentioned that perhaps the autopsy showed soot in her lungs, so if she had soot on her I would be willing to be the abandoned house is the crime scene, or either that or from the garbage perhaps. WELCOME to all new monkeys  ::MonkeyCool::

According to the police report, Diena works at the Park Street address.

If she was missing fingers (God hope she wasn't, but if the rumor is true) Does the rumor say the fingers were "cut off" or "missing"?

She was placed in a dumpster, transported to a landfill. If her little fingers were (God forbid) exposed in the landfill, that would be the first thing rodents, possums and other critters would find to nibble on and that could be why (if her digits are missing) the rumors are out there.

Penny, I've probably approved nearly 40 new members in the last few days.  I'd say it's very likely that some new members are interresting particularly in this case and they may not have posted yet, but I don't know for sure.  It would be too time consuming to check on those things.

Hi to all of you Monkeys. I don't know if this has been addressed on here before. I have not read through all of the posts. I just started reading today on this site about this particular case. I will appologize in advance if this has been answered.

I would like to know if anyone has investigated the obvious similarities between the Jennifer Marteliz case and Somer Thompson case? Both went missing after school within a mile of their home. Both lived near railroad tracks. Which by the way runs from Tampa to Jacksonville.  Evidence was found in an abandon/empty home in both cases. Both were around the same age, 7/8 years old. Thomas Peter Welnicki was the prime suspect in Jennifer's disappearance. In 1999 Thomas Peter Welnicki was supposed to be serving a 7 year sentence on drug charges.NOT a sex crime or sex offender. Where is he today? Where was he when Somer went missing? According to his behavior after Jennifer went missing, he also fits the profile that the sheriff described people should look out for. If it is not Welnicki that could be involved? Could it be someone working for the rail road system there? There are too many similarities to ignore with these 2 cases..
I pray they find the person or persons responsible for both crimes.

John Walsh said he has been talking to the Sheriff and they both believe the person has done this before and could have just come out of retirement as well.

from the above it seems as though they were in the stages of renovation to where there would no longer be soot:
Investigators collected evidence and also searched inside the vacant home at 1080 Gano Avenue. Police say the home has been empty for several months since a fire.

Carlson says the home was being renovated: "You can see in the windows, it's gutted. It just has two by four framing."

i totally think you could be right but also i am considering the fact that she went missing mon afternoon and was found wed afternoon... that means dump transport was either tues morn or wed morn.. is that enough time to have an animal do that much damage... i mean how much could she have decomposed? animals are drawn on scent and unless there was no food in the dumpster then i don't see why they would have targeted her fingers instead of their normal trash eating but i could totally be wrong and it is still rumor at this point anyways so i'm not going to talk about it anymore because it is a horrible thought

Are you from florida? I never heard of jennifer until you mentioned her... but i don't see the similarities to be that outstanding in fact jennifer was never even found... her killer/abductor must have been a lot more crafty then this guy who obviously cannot cover his tracks at all... if it is the same person he should go back into retirement because he is sloppy and has obviously lost his touch... why do you suspect he would come back out of retirement? to bait the police as a haha you never caught me... why wait 27 yrs or did he?
well as far as i'm concerned i don't see the connection this guy is nowhere near as smart as jennifer's killer at all. in fact i think this guy is the dumbest killer yet and if he came back to prove otherwise he failed miserably

I think the cases are very similar and just like john Walsh said. They have unsolved cases going back 20 some odd years. He and the sheriff believe this person who took and killed Somer has done this before. Never being caught.

I just thought there were tremendous coincidences in the 2 cases. I listed some in my first post on here. I could be wrong but it doesn't hurt to look at all the options out there to catch this monster.

The police report states the employers address in Jacksonville but that does not always mean that your work location. Since they also have a location according to there web site around the corner on Kingsley is it not possible she worked at that location. If the girl were very upset and Mom worked there she could have been running to that location and not running home.

I see that they have two addresses. The Kingsley address is indeed a mile away from Somer's home.

The Park Street address is ~24 miles away.

Diena did list her employer's address as the Park Street one.

But she did come home "for lunch" with the "family friend."

So it sounds more plausible that she would work at the Kingsley address.

However, she reported Park Street address as her place of employment.

So ... I dunno. These are just the facts that I do know. I think ;-)

Sorry if I offended you with my questions about the fundraising...Please et me clarify something: First, I'm not suggesting that the money has anything to do with the case or that it should reflect poorly on Diena or any of the family. I agree that any mother (or father/sister/brother) of a murder victim deserves to have extra money to take care of their family in a time of terrible grief. However, I was merely asking for examples of other cases where this large amount of money has been raised, is the commonplace? I was also wanting to look at it philosophically. Unfortunately, many people in this world endure heartbreaking traumatic events and it would be a wonderful thing if we could give to all of them. I don't think that is the case, however.
I have no doubt in my mind that Somer's mom and siblings will have broken hearts for the rest of their lives. But I'm not sure if money will change that. In fact, it may bring on a negative impact based on some of the comments I see on news websites. Everyone knows what Diena looks like and where she lives...If she needs a new car or a hair cut or new clothes, people may be watching her and judging her. Unfortunately that's how humans are sometimes.
My own personal belief is that the money raised by the Victim's Advocacy and Crimestoppers to find the murderer is a terrific way for the community to support the Thompson family. It's also my belief that helping them with the funeral costs and other costs related to this crime is a terrific gift. I'm just not sure how it will be perceived by other family and friends of victims if they receive hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even charities that benefit hundreds of people have to be audited. Most people don't just say "It's ok--I'm sure it'll be put to good use."

This is no personal attack on the family. Just the opposite...I hope no one tried to take advantage of this especially while they are in shock and unable to think clearly. 

I'm sure the Thompson family will make good use of that money and perhaps the excess will be used to help others to honor Somer's memory.

I do want to say, though, that it's insulting to suggest that we're picking on the family and not the predators. I just like discussing these matters openly in this type of forum vs. openly on some news website. It has nothing to do with wanting justice or peace for our community.

The soot remark and the house.
Fire was three months ago.
There were construction dumpsters with what was pulled out of the house.
The construction dumpsters were full weren't they ? I am pretty sure I saw a pic of a LE guy going thru one filled to the brim. Those things are never picked up by reg. garbage, it is usually the contractor who takes that stuff away after.
She could have been in there at first for a while. Then moved to another dumpster later that night ( Monday ) or the next day ( Tuesday ). Or stuck her in a vehicle using stuff from dumpster in the yard to cover her up.

I agree, cookie. When I visited Somer's place at the cemetery the other morning, I cried and felt sick the rest of the day (and have felt awful all week, actually). I can't even read the posts about what may or may not have been done to her body...Someone on the news said there is a "War on Girls" and although I hate to think that way, it certainly seems to be the sad truth. In the last thread, I read your posts about Somer's mother, the videos, and your take on what seems could be smirk/smile, expressions not congruent with anger, and etc. 

I watched the videos you gave links to, thanks for those, by the way.  Helps to see what you are referring to.  Am bringing those links over in this post (incl below), just for reference. 

I watched all three videos below, with the sound OFF, just so I could watch her expressions better.  Got my impressions, then rewatched the three videos to see how her expressions matched up with her words, etc.  Interesting! 

I do see what you are saying, it does seem that in the 2nd and 3rd video below, the way she's holding her mouth "could be" seen as a smirk/smile.  Only saw that once, very fleeting in the 1st video. 

Mainly I watched her eyes.  Which, didn't match up well with her other expressions, IMO.  Again, in the 2nd and 3rd videos, her eyes at many times seem to "light up" with excitement, while she has the smirk/smile, yet neither seem to be congruent with each other or with her words of either grief/anger at the given moment.  Three different things going on at the same time?  (excitement, smirk/smile, grief/anger).  Seems to me that's why it doesn't 'seem' congruent.  To be fully congruent, the eyes/mouth/words will match up. 

A few times, during a recall moment, she looks off to the right rather than the left, which is suspicious to me.  (recalling something, a person looks to the left.  looking to the right at a moment like that is 'being creative', thinking up something good to say, and/or flat out lying.. not saying which it is for her, not without seeing her in person etc, just making that comment).

Just wanted to add one thing about eye movements:

A typical left-handed person would have the opposite meanings for their eye-directions.

Not sure if Diena is left-handed or not.

I have noted a little thing that bothered me from the onset: Diena kept saying (too much, IMO) how Somer "never met a stranger." Seemed to say it over and over.

She also said something to the effect that she did not raise her to be a child who ran off. The babysitter interviewed said it was a common occurrence.

"Megan Reese, 17, who has babysat Somer in the past said that she was head strong and contradicted the mother by saying that it was not anything new for Somer to run ahead of her siblings on the way home from school and that she would take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to make her way home; and that her mother had a list of phones numbers for her friends and would start calling the friends if she took too long to get home." http://www.aworldnews.com/missing-florida-child-somer-thompson-9841

Those things and the verbal stumble she made while being interviewed about who might have taken her daughter, and she replied, "It could be anyone, It could be my ..." then seemed to stop there are the only things I have noticed about Diena that I find a little odd.

But I believe all these things could be explained as well. I just don't know what the explanations are.

Man accused of making lewd comments located

Alachua County sheriff's deputies have located a man accused of making lewd comments to a 13-year-old girl as she was walking home from school earlier this week.

Officers had searched for the individual, increased some patrols and sent home fliers about the incident, which occurred Monday afternoon, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Steve Maynard.

The man, who is in his 50s and from Newberry, is not facing any charges, but officers wanted parents to know the person had been located.

"We have him on our radar," Maynard said.

The encounter was reported after a family friend read comments the girl made about the incident online and told the student's parents.

The incident occurred in the 19000 block of Southwest 46th Avenue in Archer.
A man in a white vehicle stuck his head out of the window and made derogatory sexual remarks to the girl, she said.

The incident comes soon after the apparent kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Somer Thompson in Clay County.

Somer's death is a somber reminder that children and parents need to take precautions.

"Today's world can be dangerous," the flier stated. "Children should not go out alone or walk to school alone. They should always take a friend with them. If no friend is available in the area consider walking with them."

DA: Suspect could be involved in girl's death

ALBANY - Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards confirmed Thursday that Clay County, Fla., sheriff's investigators and the FBI have been made aware of the arrest of a man here who Edwards thinks could be linked to the death of a Florida girl, though the prosecutor says there is no evidence directly linking him to the girl.

Edwards said his office has forwarded information on Kenneth Kellam, who was arrested here Tuesday after following two elementary school boys home. Edwards said it's "geographically feasible" that Kellam could have a connection to the death of 7-year-old Somer Thompson in Florida.

"It's geographically feasible that he could have a connection to that case, and his M.O. is similar," Edwards said. "So we have passed the information along to the proper authorities in Florida, and the FBI has taken an interest."

Edwards was quick to say there is no direct link between Kellam and the Florida slaying, adding that local authorities have acted out of due diligence to notify authorities in Florida.

"We've been told they've received more than 1,500 tips in that case, and this may just be another one. But we have the obligation to report it," Edwards said.

FBI Special Agent Stephen Emmett refused to comment on what he said were the "day-to-day" operations of investigators and would not confirm whether the FBI had interviewed Kellam at the Dougherty County Jail.

Kellam was denied bond by Magistrate Victoria Darrisaw Thursday and was remanded to the custody of the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities in Charlton County in southeast Georgia confirmed last week that the remains of a young girl discovered in a landfill there were those of Somer Thompson, who police believe was abducted Oct. 19 while walking home from school.

Kellam was released from the Florida prison system in 2008 and was required to register as a sex offender.

this would be great! there are probably enough moms/dads/grand parents/wanna be grandparents /retired folks etc. who are home during those hours who could look out for these kids walking to and from school everyday in every neighborhood..
some parents in neighborhoods must car pool...maybe now they will include some of the kids whose parents are working and can't be with their kids during their walk to and from school...I still say that children should not have to walk a mile to get to school...I see young kids all the time walking along the side of the road to their homes, even after getting off the bus and I think how vulnerable they are....

Madmom and Wyks, I see exactly what you are both talking about with the mom. I have a feeling that mom is maybe suspicious of someone, maybe a neighbor, or relative, who knows. Maybe she has been thinking about past things that happened, and at the time, seemed odd, but didn't dwell on it. Now perhaps she is dwelling on them and may feel she has an idea of who may have done this, imo.

Dr. Imray and Gesek split their time between the two offices. I had my wisdom teeth pulled out by Dr Gesek (wonderful man) and my appointment was for the Kingsley address as it is closer to my home.

That's a good point you made about if someone is left-handed, and thanks for that link.  What our eyes are doing while we speak is an area of interest to me.  It's easier to do that with a video with the sound off, so there's no distraction.  But again, in person is best, due to getting the full picture.  The person speaking may have a family member/friend standing nearby off camera, which we wouldn't know, and could be looking briefly at that person.  Plus, it helps to know how the person typically reacts while speaking about things in general.  Someone who is right-handed, who continually looks off to the right while speaking, is very likely lying their little butts off.  (such as Misty, for example)  Heh.  Not so sure with Somer's mom.  Need to see more of her talking and such. 

Yes, these same things that you have mentioned have bothered me as well.  Yet, as you say, there could be some explanation, I'd just like to hear what that might be.  They have been the only red flags on her, from the start.  IMO.  The guy that she supposedly met for lunch and supposedly asked to stay for after school care, am curious to know why that particular day.  Or, was this something that had been done before.   It doesn't sound like she had reg. after school care, perhaps relying on the older sibs for that, I dunno.  However, despite my questions, the mom gets a shaky pass from me so far, as she does seem to be more believeable than not.   Certainly nowhere near the questionable stuff that we've seen from some caregivers in other cases.   IMO.

When the mom said, "It could be anyone, It could be my..."  any of those that you've mentioned could fit there and make sense.  I wish she would have finished her thinking out loud.  LOL 

Am thinking that many folks have done this, with one thing or another, maybe not fully suspicious of someone until something major happens that makes them think back hmmmmm, and begin to connect the dots.  I do hope whoever it was she was thinking about at that moment, she has shared that, continued that thought in private with LE.

It very likely will rub off on you, just stick around and jump in whenever you can!  Sleuthing can become very addicting!  LOL  The more we dig around in what's available to the public, the more we find.  And it becomes easier with practice too.  For the good majority of us, we have different ways of sleuthing, certain sites that we each like to head to first when beginning to research a case. 

There's tonssssssss of different areas we can sleuth around in, and the beauty of it is that we each have some interest in some area, and can do whatever we each do best. 

For example, there are some monkeys who can pull up public court reports in a heartbeat, while I'm still sitting there scratching my head wondering 'how did they do that?'.  lol  Other monkeys are a whiz at doing maps and charts, others who we can count on to bring us the latest news updates, still other monkeys who are the cheerleaders and readers/thinkers who help pull it all together.   

Personally, I am a thinker, as well as being one of the resident brats.  hehe.  We need humor from time to time, or we'd all go friggin nuts!  Glad to have ya aboard!

Agreed Rosie!  Feels like a slap in the face to Somer's father.  Whatever his past, the obit was no place to pull that BS.  IMO too.  Seems to me that if for no other reason than he helped bring Somer into the world, he at least deserved recognition for that.  And yeah, it's none of our business anyway, yet we can give our opinions of what happens in these cases.   

It saddens me when I look around at those I know who pass away and see the infighting that often goes on in the families.  Makes me want to run right out and preplan my own funeral down to the nth degree, and then in my will... leave everything to my doxie, with the 'Dog Whisperer', Cesar Millan, as his caregiver.  heh.

FindingAnswers - I don't think you're a 'nut job'.   ::MonkeyWink::  I believe in psychics to an extent, do see that as a gift/talent in some folks.  Yet as with everything else, that can be exploited, and then there are a lot of fakes which makes it harder for those who truly have that gift.  It's the way I look it anyway. 

I've known one true psychic, for many years, and what she knows (without having prior knowledge of any kind) is stunning, to say the least.  Made a believer out of this skeptic.

Seems that I believe more in those who do not run around telling everyone all that they know/see.  It's the quiet ones that I tend to listen to more.  Rarely if ever will I listen to one advertising in the back section of some magazine/newspaper.  lol 

Having said all that....... Yes, some LE do pay attention to certain psychics.  Just as some LE scoff at the whole idea.  In the Laci Peterson case out in Cali, it was a psychic who cracked that case, yet LE paid her no mind for the longest time and never have given her credit.  She was insistent and persistent tho, and when LE finally did listen to her, they found Laci's body.  She would have been found MUCH earlier had they paid attention from the start.  IMO. 

In the Stacy Peterson case out in Illinois, there is a psychic who tried to help the chief of police, even to the point of telling him what files were on his desk at that very moment, to help him believe in her abilities.  He just scoffed at her, despite that.  Altho her being able to do that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.  lol 

I do wish more LE would take some of these folks seriously.  Especially when a case is going cold and they say they've done all they can do and have run out of leads.  Sheesh.

Wyks I know what you mean. I agree too. I started thinking about the use of psychics after reading about the one in the Marteliz case yesterday. I think one could be very helpful in cases like this and the Haleigh Cummings case too. They just need one that is proven to be legit and not a fraudster like some that are out there.

I agree! in fact, were any of Somer's family mentioned on the father's side of the family? grand parents? for sure Dad should have his name in the obit...he is her father...wonder if father could have the obit reprinted with his name on it? it should not be just up to the mom who is listed as survivors imo...

I was also just reading on WS, that the police called the dad to tell him Somer was missing, the mom didn't even do that, has anyone else heard or read that? Wrong, just wrong, I don't believe anyone on Somer's father's side was mentioned, I will have to read that again. Just like they didn't exist.

I agree it's wrong but we don't know the circumstances.  He hadn't even seen her in 2 years.  Definitely a bitter relationship for whatever reason.

Regarding the obit, I think it is sad that her dad wasn't mentioned. I also believe it was due to animosity from the mom, which I think is awful.

I read two obits on the same person one time. One didn't mention the other family. The other mentioned that the family from the first obit and "thanked" them for letting them find out that Mom had died in the obit from the previous days paper.  ::MonkeyConfused::  ::MonkeyNoNo::

It could be that LE told the mom they would contact the father. He has talked really good about her when I have heard him on TV. I agree he should have been included in the obit. Hopefully it was just an oversight and not out of spite. It's also possible someone other than Diena helped the funeral director write up the obit and left him out of it. Who knows but I do agree with those who say it is wrong if it was done out of spite.It was his baby girl who was murdered too.

I feel if we look at the basics of Means, Motive and Opportunity I believe it's the Mother 1) Means =the ability  2) Motive = the reason 3) Opportunity = Location. I think she was angry that she had to go out looking for her... They ruled out the sex offenders very quicky. They seemed to know to look in the garbage. They know they are following the case close. They are not really warning the area that a predator is on the loose.  What they dont say -if it was a sex crime which would mean it's a man. That the family has been cleared. Not to mention all the interviews that the mother has made and the letter of thanks which was all very odd if you ask me.

Can any monkey who is good at that please point me to where I can find those things in Texas?  Iknow each state has their own system and have been very unsuccessful finding ours.

I have mixed feelings on this whole thing.  I probably would put my "husband" on an obit but that would be it.  Somers father is a lot like my soon to be ex in the fact of how he talks about the mom.   My husband rarely says anything about me that is bad.  In fact everyone I meet who knows him just talks about the good things he says.  One lady didn't even know that we are seperated and at that point had been for 2 years, he never goes into details or he flat out lies.  They all say how much he loves his kids and NONE of them, not even the best friend knew that he sees them once a month, lives 10 miles from me and works 1 mile away, can go to his friends house every Tuesday but still cannot see his kids.  I'm not saying her dad is doing that but since I live through it I can see it as a possibility and can tell you it has caused serious bitter feelings over here, especially when my youngest cries to see him.  I won't throw a stone at Somer's dad or the mom but I do say I don't agree with leaving his name off the obit.

Somer Thompson Case

Somer Thompson was born on April 5, 2002, she disappeared while walking home from school on October 19, 2009. An Amber Alert was issued for her the following day. The Amber Alert was not issued on Monday due to the fact that investigators needed to gather more information to ensure that Somer’s disappearance met the qualifications for an Amber Alert.

Somer Thompson had walked home from her school, Grove Park Elementary located in Orange Park, Florida. She left school at 2:50 p.m. and was walking home with her twin brother and 10-year old sister. The three were walking with friends. Somer became angry at one of the children and ran ahead of the group, her siblings lost sight of Somer as she turned the corner heading towards her home. Within 15 minutes, the time it took for Somer Thompson to leave her school and walk ahead of the children, she was kidnapped. Somer’s siblings arrived safely home at 3:05 p.m., Somer was nowhere to be found.

The children had told their mother’s friend, Sean Patton that Somer did not come home. According to police reports, Sean Patton is a friend of Diena Thompson’s and had agreed to stay at her home until the children came home from school. When Somer did not return he searched the neighborhood, then he sent a text message to Somer’s mother, telling her that Somer had not come home. He sent the text at approximately 4:00 p.m. Diena Thompson told authorities that the text message stated that Somer failed to come home with the children. Diena Thompson left work and drove through the neighborhood, she also picked up her oldest son and they searched the area. When Diena Thompson saw a police officer, she flagged him down and reported Somer missing.

At approximately 5:00 p.m., Diena Thompson’s live in boyfriend, Charles Currier returned home from work. Charles Currier told authorities that he received a phone call from Diena at approximately 4:20 p.m. Charles left work immediately and assisted in the immediate search for Somer.

The Amber Alert was issued Tuesday morning, October 20, 2009. News coverage spread quickly and soon everyone was concerned and praying for Somer’s safe return.

not saying it is right or wrong but how obits work is you pay for them you get to decide what goes in them. the father could have put an obit in his local paper if he wanted to and excluded the mother as well... do i think it is morally right? no not really but you don't know the story behind their breakup and it was posted that he didn't see his kids much because of financial reasons... maybe he didn't see the kids because he honestly didn't care to maybe the mother knows that and in her eyes he was no kind of a father maybe even during the marriage he wasn't...
i'm not trying to bash the dad... i'm just saying there might be a lot of reasons why he was omitted and i don't think we are owed an explanation... i know in my obit there better not even be an utterance of my fathers name he was never there for me thru out my life so why be there in my death. am i bitter that he wasn't there? no not at all... i never knew him really so how could i miss him or be upset that he wasn't there I'm just saying you do not have to list biological parents in an obit if you don't want to

A common misconception.  Think Melissa Huckaby, as just one example.  There are others that have been caught after her (like the one in Maine that was caught abusing her little girls over the internet, and recent woman from Texas that was indicted for filming kiddie porn with her 4 year old daughter).

Yes I think the Mom did it. The mom was in the area searching for her when she left work so that does give her location and no one would think it suspicious either since everyone knows she is looking. The Motive would be anger for running off like that and hiding or playing when you are supposed to come stright home. Mom said she raised them better then that. In the one video the of the mother were she is wearing the purple ribbon she was asked if she knew what the firght was about between the kids and she said she did not know. I think I would have asked my older daughter why she ran off right away that very first day.  In the same video when she was asked how the other kids were doing she got very emotional and could not talk. I think it shows the difference between the mothers fake and real emotions. Also in the same video she said they should pay for what they have done to her family.. Not pay for what you did to my child.

I've immersed myself in the Elizabeth Olten case and haven't kept up with Somer's case.

Reading back, I'm so surprsied at the new insight into Somer's mom.  I haven't seen the vids but I will go and watch them, with the sound off as Wyks did.

One thing, though.  I do remember a quick look at Somer's mom's myspace page and noticed that she had a friend that was either a person or organization that was Pro-Marijuana.

Wouldn't she remove that from her myspace if she was planning something like this? 

-they stated as a protocol that the first thing they did was follow the garbage trail...
-i have my own intense theory as to why they think the perp is folllowing the case closely
-they did say that they have a child killer on the loose (which i was shocked that they would say due to risk of panic)
-sex crime does not mean a man at all there are plenty of sicko women like that dbag who hurt a child in a church with a   
 foreign instrument then put her in a suitcase and dumped her in a pond
-they usually don't clear the family right away but they did say it was a stranger abduction (IIRC)
-as far as her thanking the community i think it is because she is normally the loud take no crap don't nedd nothing fromnobody type... she did say that this was the first time she ever knew/felt what it meant to be part of a community... i think she is genuinely greatful

Agree with you on this. I can't think of any reason to omit the ex on the obit save for being a pedofile or something of that nature. When my ex would pick up the kids he got as far as the front porch and that's it but I would never delete him from something like this. Out of respect for my child I would include him in whatever relating to the death and funeral of our child. Shows a side of the mother that is too cold........A lot of us on here know what it's like to have an ex behind on child support but that's no reason to act as if he doesn't exist........

Thank-you for answering, I thought that she was picking up the oldest child at the park? I would like to know more about him, but of course since he is only 13 or 14 I suppose we won't. I really don't know what to think, I sure don't think she killed her daughter, but I suppose if it would turn out that way I would be surprised, but certainly not shocked.

But it IS illegal, and if she had commited a major crime, I wonder why she wouldn't remove something that might make LE look at her more closely.

This statement from the sheriff is really grabing my attention. It sounds like they have a person of interest but they need more information to find the person or get a warrant etc..

Candycane,  I think you are way off in suspecting the Mother, though you certainly have a right to your opinion.  Have you ever grieved for someone you are very close to?  The range of emotions, and medications they prescribe for you let you get through the day really impacts your emotions, communications, decision making, really just everything.  I think she was very articulate, I certainly do not see any indication that she is smirking, i think those are normal facial expressions for her. She was emotionally connected to her family, and was trying to give the information and interviews everyone was begging for.  She called her boyfriend, picked up her son to search.  Where are you seeing time and opportunity?  She had full support from LE and had someone with her constantly.  I am sure they would be looking for any signs of involvement by the Mom.  When she was speaking, i think she was about to say it could be a neighbor, and then realized she was surrounded by helpful neighbors helping her cope. JMO

though I'm not as up on this case as so many others are, I got the feeling last week from what was being said by LE that the killer is a male.

When I realized last week that LE was operating as if this was a given, it made me wonder if there was evidence from Somer's body or evidence connected to Somer's body that indicated that the killer was a male, be it blood or other pointers that could help distinguish (quickly) male or female.

just my hunch.

I think it is really sad.  I think the woman has gone through enough with the loss of her daughter for people to try to manipulate, or read something into her manner of speaking. Who are we to judge her emotions in this awful case.  Clearly those near her, LE, friends, neighbors and the community think she is not involved, or they would not have rallied their support for her so readily.

If they have tissue under her nails, they most likley have blood from the perpetrator.

If they have even the smallest amount of blood, they can quickly (minutes) find the sex of the perpetrator.

Add a couple of days, and they will have a DNA report.  I've seen DNA (not mitochondrial, but definitely definitive in many ways) come back in 2-3 days.

One sentence in the mom's letter of thanks I think may show that this was something that happened TO them, not that she did it.  She writes "Please accept my thanks to all who helped us thru that very difficult time where we had to say our final goodbye to Somer."
When she said that they HAD to say goodbye it seems to me she's verifying in a way that it it weren't for this they wouldn't have to say goodbye. If she had something to do with it ( which IMO she didn't) she may have just said.."that very difficult time where we said our final goodbye to Somer".
It's hard to have every move analyzed and I feel so sorry for them all.  Just a thought.

I don't know. I think it is possible that he thought it was ok to give that information because of the way LE put out the last information. Telling people to look for sudden wounds or unexplained wounds on a person.

Lets just hope that he doesn't tell the way she was killed or if she was sexually assaulted until LE gives the ok on it or releases that.
I know many people suspected there may be soot and other evidence that took LE back to that house for extensive searching and lab work. Not just the fact she was last seen in front of that specific house.

I think they are close to getting the person in this case. I just hope it is before he strikes again anywhere else.

What you said in this post is what made me think that it is possible there was no sex yesterday when I found the information on Thomas Welnicki in the Jennifer  Marteliz case. He claims in his visions he gave police that it had nothing to do with sex. Whoever committed the crime, according to him.

When he describes everything in his vision to police in that case. it sounds like he is describing the Somer Thompson case.

I keep going back and forth on the issue of sexual assault only because of what we know and statistics but I agree that it may not be sexual and just a serial killer. I do feel it is male and I assume for sexual assault but I may be wrong about the sexual assault.

An autopsy done in Savannah Thursday has revealed the cause of death of the Orange Park 7-year-old, who disappeared Monday while walking home from school. Somer was initially identified through a birthmark and clothing she was wearing when her body was found Wednesday in a Folkston, Ga., landfill.

Prime news didn't have anything new.

They also said on that show. The killer may be from the area and had to dump the body quickly before getting caught. A person not known to the area would have had a chance to take the body miles away but they didnt. So something caused them to have to dump her body very fast without getting caught. I know that is not verbatim but that is what i took from the information.

The soot obviously tells the story of why the house was searched. The house could still have soot, it depends if the beams have all be replaced yet or not. Like someone said the dumpster at the house could still have items with soot. Where else does soot come from? Fires but are there any other places?

The cloths, could be the perp couldn't get the cloths off fully if she was fighting.

I believe she was taken by a child preditor and killed because she was most likely saying she was going to tell. I do not rule out there being more then one person involved.

What about if the person just panicked ? Persons in that area probably know where their trash goes, which is far away. If it hadn't been for LE acting so quickly with the trucks she would have never been found. Maybe the person lives with other persons and had no where to put her for a while. I doubt if she was put in the perp's trash, but close to where his trash can is.
He could have a vehicle but others might be able to access the vehicle.

Why do they think that some one has info and isn't talking ? Because Somer put up a fight
and the person would have some explaining to do re marks on the body. Plus any strange behaviour. Can they round up the RSO's who like little girls and check them for wounds ? Or do they have to have some sorts of probable cause to do so ?

I don't rule out more than one person either but going by statistics it is most likely one person and male. I wish we had more information to go on at this point.

Penny,  Mikelle Gibbs lived about 3 miles from my old house.  That was so sad. 

I think they have excluded all the RSO's in this case for a reason. I also think you bring up some very good points that i agree with. The words the sheriff used in his last conference really stick out to me. I believe they know some information by the trash found with Somers body and know that people in the area must know the person and they just dont realize it. Possibly mail collected with her body or other items that lead them to specific people in the community. The trash closest to Somer when she was found is what they will be looking at. I don't know. Something is leading them to believe someone in the community knows the person and that person may just be a visitor or friend or roomate receiving mail at a specific persons address. Am I rambling? lol

i don't want to stack quotes and o/t kind of but AZSUNNY there was an update about her the other night on tv and her sister that was with her that day who felt guilty for over 10 yrs for letting her stay outside by herself while she ran in to get her coat... her bike wheel was still spinning her dad failed lie detector tests and voice stress tests but he really didn't do it... they had the entire neighborhood searching within minutes and she was never found... there was one guy who showed up at one of the searches and was screwing with police who they say they knew in their gut did it

"Kyle" called in to a news reporter and said he saw Somer here that afternoon telling the workers (so they must have been working on it) that they were doing a good job.

About LE getting access to the house, all I know is they waited until they contacted the owner and got permission.

I believe LE stated they had to get full permission from the home owners to enter and do a full search and collection of evidence. They Most likely just peeked in the windows at first.

The killer could have had access by a door or window that was unsecure or open at the time but LE can't just go in a vacant home without permission unless it is exigent circumstances or they could be liable for things that happen and sued.

i hope you guys are right and that it is a first time local sex pred and that they are on his trail...
but even if they are going by trash found near here addresses on mail etc... who's to say that they dumped her near their own home or area of residence
and as far as the no car so dumped in trash theory... maybe but what did he do walk down the street even if at night with her slung over his shoulder in an area that was already crawling with searchers? did he put her in some sort of container that he took back with him... maybe a container that had soot on it? like a drop cloth used in renovations or plastic sheeting used to temp repair holes in roofs windows etc...

This may end up being a case where the LE have to investigate one of their own. I don't think that is the case but it could be a possibility. I read a story yesterday about a kidnap and killing and it was one of their own. I don't know i guess you never know.

I really wish we knew Kyle's last name. Why he was at that house at that time. Where he saw Somer go after she told the crew working on the house what a good job they were doing. Very odd also that he PHONED in his info saying he was the last person to have seen Somer. (The last person would be her murderer as far as I can see.) Just very odd, IMO.

I don't believe it is standard protocol to search trash.  If so why was it days before they did so for Annie Le?  What about everyone else that goes missing?  I think  a lot of dead bodies do not get found because their bodies do end up in the trash.  That may just be MO but I really think it is the case.  Either we have one very smart detective that went with his gut feeling or they had a tip that led them to search the trash, usually that is the only reason they do so.  Did they check the trash for Haleigh?  What about Caylee? And if so, did they do it right away?

Actually they did search the dumpster for Haleigh, right outside the trailer park. They dumped it out and went through it on the spot. And the Dumpster at the AMScot was very predominate when they found out where the car was last parked in the Caylee case. Plus, they searched the landfill. IIRC

i noticed that the owner of the construction company james vinson is also a full licensed real estate broker... there are 7 homes for sale on the street listed on realtor.com

That is interesting. The custody of the house was returned to the owners. 
They were in the middle of doing some work in the house, probably took plenty of pictures, then they turn it over and now they are back in. Wonder if any work had resumed ? I could see them guarding the house, sightseers, Gate Nite, etc.

Penny - Yes I am local. I will check on my walk tomorrow for the Vinson signs. Here is another little thought for you smart monkeys to process. If they know the area where the garbage was taken from, and we all assume she was placed in a dumpster, then why do we not see the police out checking all the dumpsters within a 1-2 mile radius? When the truck comes, it takes the garbage, not the dumpster (unless it is a construction dumpster). We have only heard of them looking and testing the dumpster at the house. What do you guys think?

I didn't notice any crime tape up this afternoon, and this evening I didn't want to seem like a lurky loo (even though that is what I was doing). I will check again tomorrow.

I read that they did check trash for Haleigh.

Caylee was not reported missing for 31 days, but I also think they checked landfills for her as well.

But as you said, it could have been on a tip as well. They did check RIGHT AWAY!

Thanks Brandi! This community will not heal until this creep is caught. It is comforting though that every business around has signs that say "Please keep the Thompson Family in your thoughts". It's hard to drive by them and not start to team up. Then walking past the memorial across from the house, sepecially at night when you can see the candles lit. It just hits home, that this poor little girl is gone and her family will never be the same.

I just watched Nancy Grace. It was that Mike detective filling in for her. There was nothing new. it was a discussion about that sex offender who was arrested for trying to pick up the 2 boys that are brothers. They have no reason to think the cases are connected accept for proximity and opertunity with his MO of luring kids near a school.

I just don't understand how the laws can be so different in states. My step mom's son started having sex with one of his daughters friends when she was 9 or 10, this little girl is 15 now, she told on Brian in August of 2008 but because of her age and the fact that she admitted to being sexually active with other boys (her age) it took them almost 6 months to arrest and charge him with rape. They allowed him to plea bargain down to where he only got one year in jail and pleaded guilty to corruption of a minor by drugs. This is so unfair to this little girl that had her childhood taken away from her. We live in a very very small town and he has already been warned not to come back when he is released. It is just so unfair. He actually got 9 years but reduced to 1 and 5 years probation. (ohio)

Here, we have two types of garbage pick up ( Contracted out and non contrated out.
Where my bro lives there is a large dumpster every three to four houses in the lane for the houses. The stuff just gets dumped into the truck.

Where my daughter lives, they do the recycling and she has the bins and the regular Oscar the Grouch garbage can with a lid. The guys get out of the trucks and empty into the truck.

I'm no expert, but unless Somer was murdered at the dump where her body was located I believe it would be a secondary crime scene. That doesn't make it any less important than the primary crime scene. In fact, they may be able to obtain more evidence from her body found at the dump than if they locate the original site of the murder......Here's a link for a pretty good article on crime scenes.....

I was wondering if she was dumped in a local dumpster or a trash can. With the way those trucks dump trash in and trash out and compact it. Its possible she was originally in a bag of trash that ripped open.

They were in the mens room at the park for 6 minutes one time. Maybe the trash can was missing from there or something? I don't know.

Kat, There is residential service (Also includes recycling), then there is commercial service, and yes there are many dumpsters around both large and small. Kinglsey Ave is nothing but businesses. Then their are construction dumpsters like the one at Gano house. When called, the company comes and actually takes the whole dumpster away and replaces it if necessary. The others do not get taken away, they just get dumped into the truck.  As for the house having water, I believe it would have water and electricity but am not 100% positive. I assume the electricians and plumbers would have to do their work prior to the walls being put back up. I will take the kids to the park tomorrow and see what is going on at the house. Hope this answers all your questions ::MonkeyWink::

It makes you think with some of the things listed for the profile that maybe they have some evidence of cigarettes and alcohol at the scene of the crime.

The actual trash truck did a pickup from Grove Park. The truck driver would have known his route. They have this narrowed down.

IMO I think that unfortunately that the perp is someone that Somer knew. I think that is why she was ultimately killed. But again that is only my opinion.

I had wondered if renovation had resumed after the house was released last week. I think I asked the night before the funeral, and you didn't see it, since you needed some time away after the funeral.

Hi Lenie!  I agree, probably someone she knew and that's why he had to kill her.

This case has just grabbed me hard, Somer reminds me so much of our daughter who is 9. I have probably talked to her about abduction and molestation more in the past two weeks than I have in the past 9 years. Letting her know that it is of up most importance to tell someone if someone is touching them in anyway that makes them feel uncomfortable. That nasty mean people are not always strangers. I thought I was just way over protective until I read this story.

Lenie i know what you mean. I started teaching my children about things like that as soon as they could talk clearly and understand me. We are definitely in a different time.

I raised 3 daughters and Samantha is our daughter by adoption and granddaughter by birth. It was nothing for the older girls to walk a mile to a girlfriends house 25 years ago. Shoot when I was growing up the closest swimming pool was about 10 miles and my brother and I would walk there a couple times a week. It is very sad that things have come to this. My Dad lives a block away and I will not allow Sam to walk there by herself, even though I can see her every step of the way.

When you both are talking about 'someone she knew', are you thinking she knew very well, or someone she recognized, but may not have known his name.  Someone she may have said hello to everyday on her way home from school, for instance.

I was reading various news articles and I knew the police were not giving out much info so I thought if I read the comments on the news articles I might find someone who seemed to know more than the police were letting out. That's when I found the comment about missing fingers - See the comment I found below along with the link where I found it.  I just thought it was odd that someone would jump to the conclusion that Somer was missing her fingers because LE said to look for someone with scratches etc.  Just struck me as odd ....

When somone rapes or molest or murders a child they need sent away for life. The laws need to change drastically.

I think police have an idea but they do not have enough evidence to arrest or bring them in. That is the impression I got from the last press confrerence and the profile by the sheriff anyway.

I don't think the mom committed this crime. However, I do think something is different about this case. I know that people handle grief and crises in different ways. But I've rarely seen a mom (or close family member) acting this vocal and visible from the beginning, so soon after a horrible tragedy. I know there is no such thing as "normal" in a traumatic event. Some people are stoic or adrenaline takes over (or medication). But when I think of the famous cases like Lacey Peterson, Nicole Brown Simpson, Maddie Clifton, and many others over the years, the reactions of those families came across as very "normal" to me. In this case, it's just unusual, I think. Some things don't add up at all, like the timeline. Also, the fact that the poor little girl was put in the local trash. I think most people who do these things would want to take her far away, at LEAST to another zip code, if not further. Right? And you are correct about the lack of "warning" from the LE. No one is repeatedly saying "Please be extra cautious and safe." They are basically saying "There is a child killer on the loose." Period.  Well, I'm just glad we have these forums to discuss these things without feeling silly or judgmental. I'm not judging--I'm just concerned/curious.

Many of us have made comments about the marriage, the family situation and the myspace and facebook pages and such. I agree it seems to be a bitter or sad situation, just based on what we've seen. However, I have often thought that if someone were to look at my family or friends' situations "at a glance" or read our facebook pages briefly, I would hate for anyone I know to be judged solely on that. I've done internet searches on myself and it's very misleading. Not necessarily positive or negative, just inaccurate. According to the internet, I am related to people who I have never met, lived in towns I've never lived in, own property that I don't own, and so on. (And I know it's me listed--not just another person with my name). It's actually kind of funny. Oh, and according to google maps, my house hasn't been built yet, LOL! We've all known people who have been separated or divorced or who've written silly things on their facebook pages. But we know they're good people and stable etc. No one can really tell someone else's character just based on internet searches. However, I will say, in this situation the obit things speaks volumes and it is sad. Valerie Bertinelli said it best:"Love your children more than you hate your ex."

I don't think the Mom did this either.  I think she is swinging between grief over the loss of her child and anger at whoever did this. 
The day that Somer went missing I read that she had a disagreement or fight with another child at school and her sister was fussing at her about it on the way home.  Maybe her sister was going to tell her Mom and so Somer ran up ahead and then was afraid to go home.  Maybe she ran through that apartment complex and hid behind a dumpster there.  Maybe that's where the perp saw her and took advantage of her being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I wonder if the trash was being picked up at the house that was burned out? I know the construction dumpster wasn't emptied for a while but I don't know about the regular trash?

This person was fast and sneaky. they grabbed her did what they did and dumped her in a very short time. I wonder if they hid her in something and dumped her the morning of trash day which was Tuesday on their way to work or they waited and dumped her at night Monday night?

I'm just trying to figure out how and when they put her in the trash.

Just a point: No one was living in that house, so I don't think there would be "regular trash" to pick up. The construction crews would use their dumpsters. JMO.

Seems like everything had to take place very quickly.  One thing that is really bothering me is that we don't know for sure that she was sexually molested.  LE is not saying much of anything so what if she wasn't molested and that is why she was wearing her clothes etc????  God forgive my thoughts but what if the perp was too young to drive???? Garbage Trucks Lead To Missing Girl's Body

Somer's body was found miles from her home in Clay County. It was quick thinking by a detective that led to the break in the case.

Detective Bruce Owens said he alerted Beseler that clues could be found in trash from around Orange Park.

"If a truck was seen, it would be best to follow it to its next location, so they could search or follow it to the closest landfill, so they could isolate it from the dump," Owens said.[
Owens said he got dozens of deputies and police officers on the road after Somer was reported missing. He said he wanted all garbage trucks checked as quickly as possible.

"Time is of the essence. That collection was being done by outside companies," Owens said.

Dozens of squad cars stayed on the trail of the garbage trucks as they traveled across the state line into Georgia.

"They sifted through about 300,000 tons of waste," Owens said.

About 200,000 tons of trash was searched at a landfill in Clay County, and 100,000 tons was searched at a dump in Folkston, Ga.

After hours of work, the fears of investigators turned into reality. The body of a young girl was found and identified as Somer.

Beseler praised Owens for his effort.

Lenie . The producer for the nancy grace show said tha they have tracked down the truck that Somers body was dumped from. They don't know the dumping site that that truck picked up her body from tho.

Brandi. I also didn't think the regular trash would run at that house but a friend of mine told me that when she was selling her home and having some minor work done. she had the trash pick up still in effect. So I thougth I would ask.

This case is madening. I hope it doesn't become another unsolved case.

Because this all happened in a very narrow space of time and so many people around at
the time (mostly children) it makes me wonder if its someone everyone knows. I wish
LE would say if she was sexually assaulted. At least that would narrow the field somewhat. I don't think she was because of the short time to get rid of her, and they

year old 1/2 brother. Did they get along to-gether etc. I know his mom picked him up on

I looked for Andrew, the 13 year-old brother in videos and pictures at the memorial and funeral and vigils. I don't believe I ever spotted him. I saw Sam, the twin, and Abigail, the 10 year old sister quite a bit. The fact that I never spotted Andrew made me wonder why. He is listed as Andrew Cardinal in the obit, and I don't know if that is his middle name or surname. The police report names him as Andrew Thompson. I have never seen anything to suggest that Samuel Thompson, Somer's dad, is or is not his bio dad.

I do know that according to the police report, Diena drove from work to pick him up at Grove Park OPAA before contacting police about Somer's disappearance. The police report states that she flagged down Officer Coan at Gano Avenue and Floyd Circle West and told him Diena was missing after looking around with Andrew for Somer.

That's about all I can tell you. I found his absence from any videos and pictures odd. Could be he just likes his privacy and was staying out of the media's eye. I dunno.

After the case of Somer Thompson, all parents will become more watchful over their children.

According to the Web site, connectforkids.org, approximately 2,000 kids go missing every day. If we ignore our children when they're outside, this will increase.

Parents should keep a better watch on their kids on Halloween.

Stranger danger should be a permanent rule, no exceptions.

We need to watch for opportunists, and we need to proceed with caution while letting our children eat candy.

I agree that we need to look at the brother/half brother. I wish we knew more about him. when did mom and dad get married - if it was after this kid was born it would lean to a half brother. Did he live with mom? So many details I can not remember them all.
I am sure if he was a half brother there was a lot of jealousy at mom having new kids. And since he was a bit older, he could have been into something that he did not want Somer to tell mom about. Would not have to be anything big - could be he was smoking with some other boys or skipped school. But kids Somer's age love to tell on brothers or sisters! 

Someone here who lives in the area said that Andrew went to a different school as he was older and that the school he went to had a dismissal time of 3:45. From what we have read, it seems as if he went to play some sport
after school and Diena went to pick him up. Kid probably knew nothing about this until she went to get him. Time doesn't work for me. Neither does motive.

Also LE had asked  / mentioned wounds on a perp.

The person who called the news station calling himself " Kyle " who was working at the house is more interesting to me. The Kyle Wade Rose person is an RSO. he lives in Jacksonville. Wish there were more details available on the exact nature of what he did. He was into kiddy porn that was the basis for the conviction. Don't know if it is the same person.

At times Florida can seem to be the national epicenter of reported missing children and child abductions.

The cases here gain national prominence and rarely have happy endings. After the media fanfare is over, the children's names stick out as sad reminders: Carlie Brucia. Jessica Lunsford. Trenton Duckett. Caylee Anthony. Haleigh Cummings. And now Somer Thompson.

The state does hold a number of unfortunate distinctions when it comes to measuring the number of children reported missing and, what some consider a related statistic, the number of registered sex offenders in the state.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Florida generally ranks third in the nation — behind only California and Texas — for reported missing persons, most of whom are children, registered sex offenders and the number of "stereotypical kidnappings," the most serious kind of stranger abductions.

The numbers can seem frightening for parents. Florida had nearly 62,000 missing-person reports during 2007. And as of July, the state had 51,560 registered sex offenders.

The vast majority of missing-person cases end up getting resolved. Many times reported missing children are kids who get lost or are runaways, said Ernie Allen with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Many other cases involve custodial disputes. So of the roughly 800,000 kids reported missing nationwide each year, only about 58,000 represent "nonfamily abductions," Allen said. And only about 115 of those are defined as "stereotypical kidnappings."

Those involve someone the child does not know or has only a slight acquaintance with and who "holds the child overnight, transports the child 50 miles or more, kills the child, demands ransom or intends to keep the child permanently," according to Allen and U.S. Department of Justice statistics.

The large missing-persons numbers in California, Texas and Florida may be explained by a number of common factors.

"You've got large, populous states. You've got magnet states," Allen said. "You've got year-round climate, and kids tend to be relatively more accessible."

The large numbers of sex offenders in those states "probably" have some correlation, Allen said, but he also noted that not all sex offenders' crimes involve children.

Good morning Monkeys
Has anyone done a business search for the company working on the house? Can someone post the name of the business? It starts with a "V" Versallis or something. I can't find it. 

I think "kyle" is a made up name, if not then I think every news person and their brother would be all over this person.

I was coming on to post about the construction dumpster and that they are not picked up with regular trash. I am also thinking maybe the person wanted her to be found? This morning I was considering whether or not they placed her in a truck, tool box, trunk and took her out of the area but not sure why they would bring her back to dump her.

Depending on the condition of the electrical and if it had been repaired after the fire, they most likely do not have electrical. Usually a house under construction that is down to framing the plumping and electrical are still being repaired or installed. Once those things are done, the drywall goes up. I wonder how long they had been working on the house. To be at the stud stage still seems a bit slow to me unless the house was determined to be condemned or the permit process in Florida is slow. Anyhow, my point is, the electrical is most likely being worked on.

On a construction site there are many people usually. Electricians, plumbers, laborers, foremen...If she was taken at the house, and if I am correct in my thinking there were more then just 1 or 2 workers and could have been many, someone saw something. I would like to know the size of this design company and if they use subcontractors. It is also not unlikely that a construction worker have scratches and bruises, it is a common occurrence, that is why the workers comp for the industry is so expensive!

I have considered if it may have been another child. There are so many possible scenarios. Accident/panic or on purpose...Somer was so little....It could have been another elementary student. It could have been a high school student. (High school lets out between 1:30 and 2:00 pm). It probably would not have been a jr high student since school isn't out until 3:45. However, we don't know when Somer was actually taken or killed. All we really know is the time her brother and sister reported her running ahead. Like many have theorized, she may have hidden or gone a completely different direction.

As far as her being last seen at the abandoned house, my first thought was that people tend to remember odd landmarks like that more often than just a regular yard or house. In other words, maybe she went farther than the abandoned house but that doesn't stand out in anyone's mind.

I do wish more would be revealed to the public. For example, if there were construction workers at the house that day or not. Many people would know that/remember that. I wonder why they haven't reported it on the news. Also, I totally understand/agree that LE should not give out too many details. But I suppose I am naive enough to wonder why it would hurt the case to let us know if she was sexually assaulted or not. Or to tell us if the perp is male or not. Or other very generic details. If someone were to give a FALSE confession, I am sure there would be other ways to verify it--details NOT given to the public, etc. It would just make those of us in the community better able to guard ourselves if we knew WHAT we were guarding ourselves from.

I noticed the sheriff has said "Child abduction and murder" which sort of leads me to believe they don't think it was a family member or another child. However, they have never actually said predator or pedophile, to my knowledge. John Walsh said predator but not the local LE. Am I right about that...?

My gut has told me from the beginning that this was something accidental or unplanned. Possibly a pedophile opportunity. But possibly a known offender. Like we have all said. The timeline is just so quick. And my gut also tells me it was someone local who knew trash pick up was Tuesday.

One last thing, I'm sure this has been clarified but I just wanted to mention this about LE checking the landfill. They said this IS common practice but what was different in this case was them following the trucks to the landfill so they would know where to look and not lose sight of the specific trucks.

Thanks for this Heart! I've been wanting to know the statistics. Did you notice the three top states are also hot climates? Statistics show that there are more violent crime in hot summer months. Also, there are more transient people in these states. People come from all over. Easy to just wander or live in a car or a trailer.

Love your new Avi! John Walsh said he had talked to the sheriff and they had agreed it could be a serial predator. But I don't think we have heard the sheriff say it. IIRC

Man arrested for sexual battery in Palatka

PALATKA, Fla. -- A 59-year-old Orange Park man has been arrested on armed sexual battery charges in Palatka.

Putnam County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a sexual battery at the Telstar Motel, located in East Palatka.

The victim reported that she met with a male friend, who was identified as Maroun Ata, at the motel.

According to detectives, when she refused to have sex with Ata, he pulled a gun on her and forcefully removed her clothing. He then forced the victim to have sex with him.

Investigators from the Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Unit responded and took over the investigation. Maroun Ata was taken into custody and interviewed by investigators. Subsequent to the interview, Ata was placed under arrest for armed sexual battery.

He is currently being detained in the Putnam County Jail without the benefit of a bond.

Thanks Brandi, I bet they use sub contractors if they only list 4 employee's. They also most likely work with architects or professional designers for blueprints. No telling how many people were at that house that day. I just can't get past that house...seems like everything points back to it. She was last spotted in the front, "Kyle" said she was there, soot could be found there and was supposedly found on her. I can honestly say, if that house is not connected somehow, I will fall off my chair.

Brandi - Nothing going on at 1080 house. Also for the first time since Somer went missing there was not a sheriff's car in the yard. Could just be a shift change, but they were gone when I went by.

Oh.... another observation. Lots of homes for sale in the neighborhood, but not one sign in a yard for "Vinson" Realty.

Interesting to note. I know they had an officer as a liaison to the family with them 24/7 for  long time. Diena even stated that he/she was now considered a family friend.

That's what really jumped out at me, the swings being so close, I didn't realize that, and the picture sure brought that home  ::MonkeyEek:: I didn't read anywhere about the crime as being heinous, just the thought is heinous, but what I mean is I have not read any type of description. I know there was talk of her little fingers being cut off, but I have no idea if that was true or a rumor.  ::MonkeyNoNo::

One more pic. This says alot. On every single light post, stop sign, street sign throughout the neighborhood there is a purple ribbon.

Did anyone notice the carpets in the dumpster? hmmm rolled her up in a carpet maybe? Are there other construction site around there? It wouldn't be too unusual to see a constructin truck pulling up to a dumster and throwing out a roll of carpet. It also wouldn't seem that unusual for a person along that street to see a construction worker at the house or leaving.

I also notice, it is a bit dark or shady outside that house. Somer could have been on that property and not been seen or noticed. I really do think a little 7 year old can get lost in a crowd of people walking and talking, not really paying attention. Can any tell me what side of the street people were mostly walking on? Do they walk along the houses or the park side?

Tracygirl. there are lot of trees, and it does look dark even in the daylight. As for construction near by, I have not noticed anything else going on in the neighborhood to this extent.

The one thing I do want to check out is when the park across the street starts filling up on a Monday night. Last night the place was packed. It would be interesting to see what games are played on Mondays and what time they start. If they start at 5:00-6:00 (for the pee-wee kids) that would narrow down the time that someone would have to do something without a lot of people being around.

About the swings: Here is twocents' picture again and one from google maps to show where the swings are in perspective to the restrooms. (I grabbed her large image and looked real close. There appear to be Mens and Womens doors in the little restroom house.)
