I am glad to hear this news.  I am in hopes they waited until they found enough evidence to get a conviction on this heartless killer.

Slain child's mom: Charges bring some relief

Thompson said she goes through a gamut of emotions and that the pain is excruciating

(AP) -- The mother of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, who vanished while walking home from school in north Florida, says charges filed in her daughter's murder have brought
some relief.

Diena Thompson told NBC's "Today Show" her family is doing "a little bit better" after detectives charged 24-year-old Jarred Mitchell Harrell with premeditated murder Friday.

Thompson said she goes through a gamut of emotions and that the pain is excruciating. She also said she thinks it would be fair for Harrell to get the death penalty.

Somer Thompson's body was found in a Georgia landfill two days after she disappeared in October.

Harrell has also been charged with lewd and lascivious battery and sexual battery.

He was already being held on child porn charges in a separate case.

JMO I think the allowing pedophiles to plea bargain is a huge mistake. As some of you will remember I told of my step brother being charged with rape of a minor. They said they had proof, but allowed him to plea bargain to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor between the ages of 13 to 16. He received 9 years on two counts, supposedly to run consecutively. He was arrested in April of last year and is getting out Easter Sunday. Less than one year in prison for having an ongoing rape with a young lady from the age of 9 or 10 until she was 15. My dad and step mom are upset with me because I have said he is not allowed anywhere around my house. They are both in their 70's and he has convinced them that they only convicted him of contributing. You can find him on escorn under Brian Sies. But they both believe that this is wrong also that there has been some mistake. He fits right along with JH, pudgy, doesn't seem to take care of him self, and can't find a woman his own age to date. The judges and lawyers need to quit worrying so much about their paychecks and start realizing what these monsters are doing to our children.
I know that God says revenge belongs to Him. I pray that He decides that these monsters start receiving there justice right here on Earth where they can feel the pain and hurt that they have caused to so many.

Lenie thank you for being so honest. I believe your parents are fighting for your brother for the love they have for him as their child. That his actions are separate in their minds - that possibly they simply cannot wrap their brains around what he was arrested for/his convictions.

Deenie I have to say he is NOT my brother, step brother and my dad married his mother after we were all fully grown. If this would have been one of my 5 brothers I don't think he would have made it to jail cause the rest of the brothers would have taken care of him. Rumor has it that this "man" and I use the term loosely will be taken care of once he is back in town.
Thank you so much for the hug! Hopefully my dad will wise up and see this fella for what he really is.

Clay Grand Jury: Jarred Harrell Indicted on 4 Counts in Somer Thompson Case
Ann Butler  Dave Wax     Created: 4/1/2010 5:12:50 PM    Updated: 4/1/2010 6:50:00 PM

CLAY COUNTY, FL - A grand jury indicted Jarred Harrell today on four counts, nearly a week after he was charged in the death of Somer Thompson.

A Clay County grand jury returned a four count indictment charging Harrell with murder in the first degree, kidnapping, sexual battery, and lewd or lascivious battery in connection with the death of Somer.

Seven-year-old Somer disappeared on Oct. 19 on her way home from school. He body was found a couple of days later in a Georgia landfill.

Around 4 p.m. today, the grand jury returned the four-count indictment against Harrell, which Judge William Wilkes accepted. Wilkes did not set a bond on the charges.

Harrell's arraignment on the indictment is April 8. He was charged Friday with the death of Thompson.

Harrell was extradited from Mississippi on child pornography charges, not related to the Somer case. The Clay County Sheriff's Office said, however, at that time that Harrell was a person of interest.

Former Prosecutor Weighs In on Jarred Harrell Case
Jackelyn Barnard  Taren Reed     Created: 4/2/2010 5:12:51 PM    Updated: 4/2/2010 6:40:55 PM

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Jarred Harrell has been indicted in Somer Thompson's kidnapping and murder. The state said it will seek the death penalty in his case.

Former prosecutors of high profile cases said don't expect Harrell's trial anytime soon.

Former State Attorney Rod Smith tried Danny Rolling's case. It is known as one of Florida's most high profile cases. Rolling was executed in 2006 for the brutal murders of five college students in Gainesville in 1990.

Smith said Rolling's trial back in 1991 was tough because of all the publicity. He said with more cable news and information available online, trying Jarred Harrell's case will be even tougher.

The toughest part? Looking for a jury.

"By the time this case gets to trial, it will be, 'Yes, I've heard of him,'" said Smith, and added death penalty cases are handled differently altogether.

"You must make sure every 'T' and 'I' is crossed and dotted, because the last thing you want to do it do it (trial) again," Smith said.

Smith feels Harrell's trial will not happen in a year. He said Harrell's defense attorneys will slow things down with a lot of motions.

"A focus over time will switch from the focus on the crime to circumstances to the life of the defendant," Smith said.

He also said while Harrell's case will be tough to handle, he is certain of a couple of things. "It will be a case that gets a trial. I have no reason to believe it's a plea-able case. It will be a death penalty case and probably will not be in Clay County."

State Attorney Angela Corey has mentioned a change of venue is possible, but that decision will be made by a judge down the road.

Harrell's next court appearance will be Thursday.

One of the very sad things is now her twin brother will forever be reminded of his sister on his birthday.  He won't be able to celebrate a day that is his, just like we all do, without remembering what was taken from him.  Not only his sister, but his twin sister, with whom he shared a womb and all the milestones, was ripped from him.
