Marinade Dave stirs up blog, Casey Anthony case
By Bianca Prieto, Orlando Sentinel
April 25, 2010
Among friends, Dave Knechel has always been known for three things: loyalty, fairness and dependability.

The self-taught artist, writer and cook has left his mark designing slogans for companies, creating advertisements for department stores and selling homemade marinade.

His biggest mark might be from his newest venture — his blog about accused child-killer Casey Anthony.

Knechel (pronounced NECK-al) is "Marinade Dave," a Casselberry blogger whose monicker comes from his days as a meat marinade maker. He was thrust into the public eye this month after he was the recipient of kind words from Orange Circuit Judge Stan Strickland.

The judge's comments sparked a defense request for Strickland to recuse himself from Anthony's high-profile case.

Strickland granted that request. And just like that, the judge was out and Chief Judge Belvin Perry was in.

It was an outcome Knechel never imagined when several months ago he posted a blog entry about the day Strickland called him to the bench to compliment him on the coverage.

"I rue the day that I wrote about it," Knechel said while seated in front of his laptop at the Seminole County Library. "I'd rather be remembered as a writer," he said, not the guy who played a role in Strickland's recusal.

But the incident itself speaks to what Knechel's friends say about him — that other people naturally like him.

Knechel's jovial and friendly personality has earned him friends in every walk of life, says his best friend of more than 40 years, Stew Bacheler.

"He's a real stand up guy," Bacheler said. "You've got a guy here who is a decent human being, who is extremely friendly to everybody, outgoing and has always been concerned about people and willing to help."

Bacheler pokes fun at his BFF, commenting that while he's happy that they're as close as brothers, he's sure glad they don't look alike.

"I still have most of my hair," Bacheler jokes. Knechel is bald on top with salt and pepper on the sides.

A 57-year-old, self-described former master hotdog maker who lives at home with his parents, Knechel started the Marinade Dave blog in 2004 with an idea about marinade and the aim of becoming a writer. Years earlier, he mixed and sold 12,000 bottles of "Marinade King," a wine-based sauce he cooked and bottled at home and sold in local stores.
The business, he said, ultimately was a victim of its success. He couldn't keep up with the demand.

The blog, Knechel thought, would allow him to teach people about how to marinade properly.

But over time, the blog evolved beyond sauces and food. Fast forward to November 2008. A conversation with his best friend's wife sparked Knechel's interest in the Casey Anthony case. Until then, he said, he knew nothing about it or the accused young killer.

The next day, with video camera and cell phone in tow, Knechel drove to Jay Blanchard Park to watch divers hired by a California bounty hunter scour the Little Econ River for the remains of Caylee Marie Anthony. Nothing turned up.

Knechel was hooked. He published his first post about the day's events.

"I have a unique view point on the case," Knechel said. "I could write about it as a regular person."

Knechel said he has tried hard to keep his blog posts about Casey Anthony —more than 200 of them so far — fair and balanced. He does, however, insert his opinions or emotions into his writing. Often he writes in the first person.

He said he has guidelines for those who want to comment on posts. He said he won't tolerate those who only want to trash the Anthony family.

"I won't run my blog at a third-grade level," he said.

Since that first Casey Anthony posting, readership has grown exponentially. Prior to writing about the Anthony case, he said he averaged about 5,000 page views a month. In March, the total was 100,000.

He saw a spike in page views after news broke of his low-profile friendship with Strickland. The blog has drawn 145,000 views so far this month.

Last year, long before anyone realized Knechel knew Strickland, the blogger won an Orbbie award for best news blog from the Orlando Sentinel, an accomplishment he said he's proud of achieving.
Knechel, who has health problems and is unemployed, devotes much of his time the blog. He researches laws, writes about motions and puts his thoughts together on the case. He even attends court hearings, takes video footage of news conferences and takes pictures.

Despite the effort, Knechel said he doesn't earn a dime from the blog. (He declined to talk about personal finances or how he sustains himself.)

The national news has garnered him lots of attention – some good, like an increase in page views and national exposure; and some bad, like a few death threats and lots of nasty e-mails.

He has not reported any of the threats to the police.

"Most are idle threats, I hope," Knechel said.

So sorry for your family's loss, Capp..prayers for you all.
Thanks for posting this trim...

I'm so sick of all things concerning Marinade Dave, I could scream!  I promised myself that I was just going to ignore it but now we have Bianca writing this pile of crap, continuing to stroke his ego even more and it's sickening.  Also, Bianca can't seem to even get her own story straight because the following quote is just a lie; "...long before anyone realized Knechel knew Strickland, the blogger won an Orbbie award for best news blog from the Orlando Sentinel, an accomplishment he said he's proud of achieving."

Voting for the great Orlando Sentinel Orbbies was open until November 20th of last year.  Just another example of the complete attempt to manipulate the reader's mind with hyperBULL that isn't true.  The distortion of the truth is rampant and it is continuing to have a negative impact on justice for little Caylee.  It's hardly worth watching any shows on the news channels because they have become pure bunk, not worth listening or reading any commentator or expert views because they seem full of misinformation or partiality based on their own bias (with the exception of maybe Bill Sheaffer, for some reason I trust his opinion) and out of the hundreds of blogs and websites dedicated to true crime...face it, there are only about 4 or 5 that we trust for accuracy...I could be wrong about you but that's how it seems to me.  I read the docs, try to absorb the information and formulate my own thoughts and then come here, the hinky meter, blink's and folks...that's about it for me because most of the other boards are full of fighting, misinformation and speculation that it is unnerving.  Sometimes, we just need facts without having to read all about how great the blogger is, who is running the blog or the moderators are who are trying to keep the peace...

If I can just keep the focus on the evidence surrounding Caylee's death instead of all the stinking, contemptible drama of Casey, the Anthony's, the attorneys, and the countless individuals who keep wanting to inject themselves into this nightmare, I am confident that one day there will be justice served.  Dave's blog represents to me a person who is not pleasant or agreeable and I can't stand him personally.  I admit my curiosity and aggravation gets the best of me when he is slamming Blink, Val or Scared Monkeys and I've been to check it out but to me he is just an eccentric whacko who certainly contributes NOTHING that is scientific, beneficial or educational, information wise in his blogging.  He's a 57 year old self-asserting spieler of diatribes to women, (even though that's probably why he got that Orbbie, from women voting), worthless propaganda (for his benefit) and his language is intellectually vacuous...but he's also something of an egomaniac, though he needs constant praise and adulation from his followers. There was no "friendship" with Judge Strickland for crying out loud!  One more thing that got me was how Dave posted about the phone call coming (after his hospitatlization) from the Judge when now it seeems that never happened and then how he made that post about going out with Baez and crew after court and claims that was a joke and we were supposed to get that it was a joke, however, it was certainly no joke that he was passing out his card to Jose and everyone else that day after court, as we all were witness to that event.  For those of you that follow and like him, I apologize, I just won't waste my time on reading his blog... and I won't waste anymore time on writing about his obvious hunger for fame either.

Why would the Orlando Sentinel keep flaming the last embers of Marinade Dave and the firestorm he keeps taking credit for?  Judge Strickland, a good and human man who had a lapse in judgement for a brief moment last October made this recusal possible.  So many people with so much dramaticism performing actions in a histrionic manner.  Yet they proclaim they do it all for Caylee.  How can they think of Caylee when the blog is all about themselves and how much they sacrifice every minute of every day for their fans...geesh, now I am gonna be sick.

A quick thought about why Marinade Dave  at age 57  lives with his parents.  It could be a case of Dave helping his parents out, or it could be a pooling of resources and it's beneficial to all parties.     It doesn't really matter to me, just thoughts.

I'd also just like to add this....
I haven't posted anywhere for a very, very long time now.  Ugly drama that was totally NOT ABOUT CAYLEE drove me away from the desire to even share at all with any board.  I just can't take the ugly, offensive, rude and hateful personalities that a few posters have.  Klaasend has always seemed to keep it safe here and demand respect for each other.  I really appreciate ScaredMonkeys and enjoy my time just reading and I really and truly only visit here, Blinkoncrime and The Hinky Meter (I love to read posts by Valhall, JWG, Maura, and Silverspnr because they are based on fact or their interpretation of such) and I may not always agree what is said but I do respect and appreciate these three sites particularly, (even though I just hang in the rafters,) and the posters that contribute to them.  Thanks...just wanted to say that.

I'd like to comment on the article about "marinade for brains" by the OS because I have nothing positive to say about it but I cannot and will not be negative today as I am mourning the loss of my kind & gracious southern charmed mother-in-law that passed this morning at 5:30AM.   As many may have seen a post or two this past month, she was failing after a very full almost 88 years.  When I arrived down south from Jersey, she welcomed me with open arms & heart, we became close instantly.    I told her years ago that she reminded me of a southern version of my "auntie" who literally was a saint on earth, in my eyes there is no higher compliment one could receive from me.   It is impossible to express at this time how much I will miss her  an angelic monkey

I'm sorry, Capp ... please accept my sympathy.

I have been here since the day that Caylee hit the national news of "missing".  Hope you continue to post here.  I read the debacle arms length posts about GUM/Cindy and otherwise on Hinkey ..which to me was of no respect for Val. I don't know what to think about that .. But your Welcome Here
No worries of Ugly ..its not posted via posters here and if were to be - it would be nipped faster than you can say Banana. Were a pretty solid bunch.

I do not have anything to add right now - other than I pray that this new Judge Perry will put the fear into BOBO.

That his Circus of Grand Standing will be put to a Halt within the Court room. I watched a video of Judge Perry and I even felt my hairs stand up - totally different aura within the room. This Judge is Straight up - NO play, No give, NO way is he going to put up with the antics of the dream team Dufense.  Judge Strickland did nothing wrong. He actually is a Gift. He allowed the public to see " The real Dream Team" He, Judge Stickland in a essence gave Caylee a Voice.

He within his courtroom allowed free flowing words to be said - and within the words documented on paper, video etc..  It was truly a benefit for Caylee.

Casey Anthony case: Why is there such interest in it?

You know a story has a touched a nerve when your physician, unsolicited, launches into a fiery editorial on the subject.

That’s precisely what my doctor did last week on the topic of the Casey Anthony case,  which just keeps piling up headlines. It was one of the more memorable visits to the doctor’s office. And to stay on good terms with my wonderful doctor, I won’t be sharing her incisive insights.

I recently asked WFTV-Channel 9 anchor Bob Opsahl if he’d ever seen a story like this one and why there is such interest in it.

“It is the ultimate reality show involving wild parties, multiple sex partners, serious family problems, lies, deceit and murder,” Opsahl told me.

Of the players, Opsahl said, “Each one appears to be hiding a dark secret. The only innocent in the whole scenario is beautiful Caylee, the victim of a horrible crime. And almost every week, there are surprising new revelations, and a never-ending supply of fascinating plot twists. No, I’ve never seen a news story like that before. It’s going to be hard to forget the Casey Anthony saga, but I’ll try.”

Casey is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Caylee. I think Caylee is the main reason the story holds enduring interest. People want justice for her and the full story about what happened to her.

The other secrets and revelations are interesting, but Caylee supersedes everything. What do you think?

If anyone understands your grief it's me. I too just buried my husband on April 16th. It was so surreal the way my four children treated and disrespected my mother and I. We were treated with more dignity and respect from  my husbands family. I am suffering with nightmares! my mother had to be escorted on the plane by wheelchair to and from our destination.
So I know your pain! my husband was a good  man a true christian with such a gentle spirit! he would have been heart broken to know his children acted  in such a manner.

 please accept my sympathy.
