In wake of Sandusky scandal, Penn State holds child sex abuse conference
October 27, 2012
(Reuters) - Pennsylvania State University, which was shaken by a molestation scandal that put former coach Jerry Sandusky in prison and tarnished its famed football program, holds a three-day conference starting this weekend aimed at preventing child abuse.
::snipping2::
Dr. Kate Staley, a member of Penn State's Justice Center for Research and lead organizer of the conference, said the event was not meant to be an attempt by the university to restore its name.
"The last thing I would have done is put on a PR stunt," Staley said.
She said the conference was intended to be "substantive and educational and awareness-raising."
Attendees from 27 states include police officers, preschool teachers and child sex abuse experts as well as people who may not deal with the issue on a regular basis.
Staley said the topic made people very uncomfortable and reluctant to talk about it.
"One of the things this conference is trying to do is end that silence," she said.

Mike McQueary's Hearing Postponed Due to Weather Concerns
October 29, 2012
The hearing to decide whether the court will postpone Mike McQueary's $4 million lawsuit against Penn State was canceled because of inclement weather concerns and will be rescheduled, court officials confirmed on Monday.
McQueary sued Penn State for $4 million on Oct. 2, citing irreparable damage to his career and reputation. Penn State subsequently petitioned the court to postpone the case until the trial of two former administrators, Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, wraps.

Jerry Sandusky child abuse victim gains support
Originally Published October 27, 2012, Updated October 28, 2012
LOCK HAVEN, Pa - A small group of people rallied on Saturday to show support for a man whose sexual-abuse claims triggered the investigation of former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
The 18-year-old accuser, Aaron Fisher, and his mother, Dawn Daniels, addressed a crowd of about 30 supporters outside his former high school in Mill Hall. Both called on school officials and other people in the community to listen to children who make allegations of abuse.
Fisher, who went public earlier this month after being known for more than a year only as Victim 1 in court papers, complained about the way he was treated at the school after telling school officials he had been abused. He said he was "bullied, not believed and not taken seriously."
"They make a kid feel worse if they tell," he said. "I'm here to say that kids always need to tell."
School officials reported Sandusky to Clinton Country Children and Youth Services, which triggered the criminal investigation into Sandusky.
Those attending the rally wore ribbons to signify child abuse and bullying prevention, and some wore blue T-shirts that read, "We support Aaron and the Victims."

Man Claims Sandusky Sexually Assaulted Him Over 40 Years Ago
October 29, 2012
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A 57-year-old man has told the KDKA Investigators that he was sexually assaulted by Jerry Sandusky more than 40 years ago.
This is the first case outside of the Penn State scandal.
The man told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that he was sexually assaulted in the basement of a recreation center started by the Sandusky family in the late 1950s in Washington, Pa.The facility is called the Brownson House.
The man, who has been interviewed by police, said he was sexually assaulted when he was 11-years-old. Jerry Sandusky was 22-years-old at the time.
“He started fondling and touching me. I’m 11-years-old, it felt good. I didn’t know any better. Next thing I know, he was raping me,” the victim said.
“He kept repeating ‘Real men don’t cry.’ I kept telling him how bad it hurt. My stomach was hurting awfully. He kept saying “Real men don’t cry’ until I finally pushed backwards and he fell away from me,” the victim said.
Sources tell the KDKA Investigators the 57-year-old man is the third man who claims he was sexually assaulted at the Brownson House more than 40 years ago.
No one with the Sandusky family is associated with the Brownson House at this time.
The alleged victim said Sandusky tried to assault him one more time, but he ran away.
“A weaker individual would be dead by now,” the victim said.

Sugar Ray Leonard is more than a boxing champion, he's one heck of a person to standing up and speak out. JMHO

Boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard: 'I cried for' Jerry Sandusky's victims
October 29, 2012
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Retired boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard said Monday he cried for Jerry Sandusky's accusers after hearing of the former Penn State assistant football coach's arrest on child sex abuse charges nearly a year ago.
An abuse survivor himself, Leonard said he hopes the accusers can draw from his own story and willingness to speak out about a problem that garnered national attention following the Sandusky scandal.
"What I had heard about Penn State — I cried for those victims," Leonard told reporters after speaking at Penn State's inaugural Child Sexual Abuse Conference. "Because I knew what they'd dealt with, what they lived with ... It's such an awful thing that eats away at you, that makes you feel that you're to blame."
::snipping2::Penn State said 500 people had registered to attend the conference. About 420 showed up as of Monday, with Hurricane Sandy disrupting travel plans across the eastern United States.
After morning classes were held as scheduled, the main University Park campus shut down by about 1 p.m. But the university said the conference would go on as scheduled, wrapping up Tuesday with a keynote address by former kidnapping victim Elizabeth Smart.
The university hopes to become a leader in the research, treatment and prevention of child sex abuse. President Rodney Erickson said the origins of the conference go back a year, after Sandusky's Nov. 5 arrest.
::snipping2::
At the first full day of the conference, Erickson outlined ways the school is reaching out to help victims of abuse.
"Child abuse is a tragedy for children, for families and for society, and the time to step up the effort to stop it is now," Erickson told attendees.
Experts contend cases of abuse are underreported.
About 68,000 cases of abuse were reported to protection services in 2010, according to data cited by University of New Hampshire researcher David Finkelhor. A 2006 study estimated there are 180,000 cases known to professionals.
But Finkelhor cited an academic study that estimated there may have been 1.6 million "contact sexual offenses" of juveniles in 2011.
::snipping2::
Leonard revealed last year in a book that he was sexually abused by a coach while in the amateurs, something that haunted him throughout his life and led him to turn to alcohol and drugs.
The issue is still difficult for Leonard, who said he has been sober for six years. He choked up at times during his speech in a conference center ballroom.
Beside the book, Leonard said he had spoken out before a large group on the topic just once before, for a TV show. He had qualms about speaking at Penn State and sought beforehand to prepare his 15-year-old daughter, Camille, who accompanied him to State College, about what he would talk about since he thought she did not know.
It turns out, she did.
"She looked at me, and said, 'Pop, I know,'" Leonard said. "And that's a good thing because our kids need to know more. They need to be protected more."
Leonard said Monday he was abused in separate instances by two men, both of whom are now dead. He did not identify them.
"People need to hear more of this. You know what, use me, I will be that leader," Leonard said. "I will stand right there and say, 'Yes, something must be done now.' Not later, now."

Child sex convict Sandusky sent to Pennsylvania maximum security prison
October 31, 2012
(Reuters) - Former Penn State assistant football coach and convicted child sexual predator Jerry Sandusky will spend the rest of his days in a maximum security prison in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania, the state corrections system decided on Wednesday.
Sandusky, 68, who was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison this month for sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period, was transferred to the State Correctional Institution at Greene County, near Pittsburgh, where he was put in protective custody.
::snipping2::
Before the transfer, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections had been evaluating Sandusky since his arrival October 23 at its processing center in Camp Hill, near Harrisburg.
In prison, Sandusky will be allowed one visit each week from his family. All visits to his restricted housing unit, including those by counselors, will be non-contact, meaning all communication will happen through his closed cell door.
Sandusky can have a television, radio or other personal property in his cell, as long as it is approved by the prison, located 185 miles away from his home in State College.
"He will eat all of his meals in his cell," Corrections spokeswoman Sue McNaughton said, adding that he will be allowed to exercise for an hour a day, five days a week.
SCI-Greene holds 1,800 inmates, including many convicted murderers.

Sandusky moved to prison housing death row inmates
October 31, 2012
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky on Wednesday was sent to serve his child molestation prison sentence at an institution in far southwestern Pennsylvania that includes most of the state's death row inmates.
The Corrections Department said Sandusky was transferred to Greene State Prison after being evaluated at a facility outside Harrisburg. Prison officials said he will be housed in protective custody.
"We make individual decisions based on facts," Corrections Secretary John Wetzel said in a written statement. "Given the high profile nature of this individual, coupled with the nature of his crimes, this makes him very vulnerable in a prison setting."
::snipping2::
The 30- to 60-year sentence imposed Oct. 9 means he faces the likelihood of dying in prison.
He will not have a cellmate and will be subject to heightened supervision and an escort when not in his cell. He will get an hour of individual exercise five days a week and three showers a week.
He will eat meals in his cell. Prison services such as counseling, religion, medications and treatment programming will also occur in his cell.
All visits will be non-contact, meaning no touching is allowed.
He may have a TV, radio and other property, according to the Corrections Department, if he is deemed to be in "compliant adjustment."
::snipping2::
The State Correctional Institution at Greene, as it is formally known, is a maximum-security prison that houses 1,800 inmates and employs 700 people.

Reports: Graham Spanier charged\
11/01/'12
Former Penn State president Graham Spanier has been charged in relation to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, and the Pennsylvania state attorney general is due to make an announcement Thursday, multiple media outlets reported.
Spanier will be charged with perjury and obstruction of justice by Attorney General Linda Kelly, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which cited anonymous sources in its report.
Kelly and state police commissioner Frank Noonan are scheduled to host a news conference in Harrisburg, Pa., to announce what sources are calling a major new development in the case, according to the report.
The news comes almost one year after Sandusky, a former Penn State defensive coordinator, was arrested and charged with repeated sexual abuse of young boys dating to 1996. The charges were the catalyst for one of the biggest scandals in the history of college sports. ::snipping2::

Lawyers: Penn State ex-president framed by 'vindictive' governor
November 1, 2012
Lawyers representing Graham B. Spanier angrily lashed out at prosecutors and Pennsylvania's governor, saying charges brought against the former president of Penn State University were politically motivated.
Spanier was charged on Thursday with being part of a cover-up of details in the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal. Two other former Penn State officials, who had been previously charged, face new charges as well, prosecutors announced.
“Graham Spanier has committed no crime and looks forward to the opportunity to clear his good name and well-earned national reputation for integrity,” his lawyers said in a statement emailed to reporters. The charges are “a politically motivated frame-up of an innocent man. And if these charges ever come to trial, we will prove it.”
::snipping2::
The statement is attributed to Spanier’s lawyers, Timothy K. Lewis, Elizabeth Ainslie, Peter F. Vaira and Jack Riley. The lawyers argued that the charges are a ploy by Gov. Tom Corbett, who was the state’s attorney general from 2005 to 2011. Corbett was involved in investigating Sandusky as early as 2009. Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, was arrested and charged in November 2011 and is now in prison.
The statement said the current charges against Spanier are designed to “cover up and divert attention away from the fact that he [Corbett] failed to warn the Penn State community about the suspicions surrounding Jerry Sandusky, and instead knowingly allowed a child predator to roam free in Pennsylvania. Its timing speaks volumes. These charges are the work of a vindictive and politically motivated governor working through an unelected attorney general, Linda Kelly, whom he appointed to do his bidding and who will be a lame duck five days from now.”

Sorrow at Penn State on Spanier cover-up charges
November 1, 2012
People who love and care for Pennsylvania State University reacted sorrowfully today to news that former President Graham Spanier had been charged with helping cover up child-sexual abuse allegations against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, sentenced last month to 30 to 60 years in prison.
But child-care advocates said the charges were necessary - and wondered how many boys could have been spared if Spanier and others had spoken up.
Spanier, once among the nation's most prominent college presidents, was charged with perjury, obstruction of justice, endangering the welfare of children, criminal conspiracy, and failure to report suspected child abuse. Similar, additional charges were lodged against former university Vice President Gary Schultz and former Athletic Director Tim Curley, already scheduled for trial in January.
"I was hoping we had turned the corner," said a disappointed David Dimmick, a retired Penn State sports-ethics instructor who taught for 33 years. "This is what we're going to be known for, for years and years, and that's unfortunate."
Dimmick taught Curley as a student. And he considers Spanier a friend. He knows them to be good people - and can't imagine they would willingly ignore or cover up allegations of child abuse.
Perhaps, he said, "they were guilty of not understanding the seriousness, of not knowing what to do, perhaps trying to protect a person they thought a lot of, Jerry Sandusky."
The school has been stained, and "the 100,000 of us who are students, employees, former employees, we're suffering for it," Dimmick said. When he wore a Penn State T-shirt on a recent out-of-town trip, "I could see people looking at me sideways.
In announcing the charges today, authorities mentioned occasions in 1998 and 2001 when Spanier, Schultz and Curley discussed allegations that Sandusky had abused boys on the Penn State campus, but took no action.
"What boys would have been spared?" asked Pastor Aaron Anderson, who has visited campus as a board member of Prevent Child Abuse Pennsylvania, based in Media. "Spanier, that's where the buck stops. He's the one who has to report it. When something like that is happening, you have to bring in the experts and let them do the investigation."

Ex-Penn State officials accused of 'conspiracy of silence'
November 1, 2012
(CNN) -- Three former Penn State University officials -- including ex-President Graham Spanier -- have been charged with conspiring to cover up years of sexual abuse against children by former football coach Jerry Sandusky.
Spanier, along with former Athletic Director Tim Curley and ex-Vice President Gary Schultz, each face the same eight counts related to the Sandusky scandal, including perjury, conspiracy and endangering the welfare of children, Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly announced Thursday.
The three men are scheduled to appear in court Friday for a preliminary arraignment.
It's the first time Spanier has been charged in the wake of the scandal, which started unfolding publicly a year ago. Curley and Schultz previously had been charged with perjury and failing to report suspected child abuse.
The three men "essentially turned a blind eye to serial predatory acts" by Sandusky, Kelly told a news conference in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

As a result of the charges, Penn State said Spanier -- who was removed as president in November 2011 -- will be placed on immediate leave. He had continued to serve as a tenured professor, although he was on a sabbatical.
Penn State said it recently informed Curley that his fixed-term contract will not be renewed when it expires in June. Schultz had retired after he was initially charged last year.
The university refused to comment on the charges "out of respect for the legal process."
CNN has reached out to attorneys for Curley and Schultz, who have previously said the two men are innocent of the initial charges and would fight to clear their names.

Speaking Thursday, Kelly cited as evidence a series of e-mails among Spanier, Schultz, and Curley from February 2001, referring, somewhat in code, to the infamous incident in which assistant coach Mike McQueary walked in on Sandusky sexually assaulting a young boy in a university shower room.
::snipping2::
Curley and Schultz are scheduled for a January trial on the initial two charges. Kelly said she thinks now that Spanier has been charged, the three men should face a joint trial, because of the intertwined nature of the charges.

Graham Spanier’s charges don’t shed light on fed job
November 1, 2012
An update on everyone’s favorite fed: Former Penn State president Graham Spanier, who claimed to be working on a top-secret government project after being ousted from the Happy Valley campus, has been charged with eight counts connected to his role in the child sex-abuse scandal that engulfed his former employer’s football program.
It was never clear which government agency Spanier was working for — he said it was related to national security and his lawyer told the Loop back in July that it was so hush-hush even he didn’t know. A spokesman for the Pennsylvania Attorney General tells us that it’s still a mystery. “I’m not aware of anyone who has claimed ownership of him,” spokesman Nils Frederiksen tells the Loop. “He’s obviously good at keeping secrets.”
