I had to take a second look when I saw the update on the forum.  It's been so long.  My heart knew that she was gone, but there was always hope that she really did just run off somewhere.  I'm so sad to hear this and I pray so hard that justice is served.  I pray for little Hailey's soul and that it can rest when her killer is behind bars forever!

I have received such a great out pouring of love & condolences,so much so that I couldn't name you all individually. Thank you to everyone who held hope up until we couldn't any longer. My hope has ended,but now closure can begin for me,my beautiful son & husband,all our family & friends. My baby has been found. Now to get her home where she belongs & get her justice. Today I learned my daughter has been murdered. Robbed of her short,innocent life. I'm just so grief stricken,but on the other hand,I can take some comfort knowing my baby is safe & happy.

Grandmother wants justice for Hailey Dunn

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -
More than two years of searching and holding out hope ended Friday, and now family and friends want nothing more than justice for Hailey Dunn.

Scurry County officials confirmed that the remains found near Lake J.B. Thomas back in March were identified as missing Colorado City teenager Hailey Dunn.

Hailey's paternal grandmother, Connie Jones, was devastated by the news.

"What made somebody want to hurt her? What did she did she do that was so bad," Jones said. "I'm numb, I'm numb, I just don't want to live."

However, Jones believes she knows where the investigation should begin.

"I think Shaun Adkins had something to do with it. That's the first thing that came out of my mouth, I asked, where the Hell is Shaun?" Jones said.

Friday, officials wouldn't answer any questions about the investigation, but we do know Hailey's mother's ex-boyfriend, Shawn Adkins has been the only named person of interest over the past two years.

"I think Billie was afraid of Shawn, because Billie told me she was afraid of Shawn," Jones said.

This grandmother says she wants nothing more than a few moments with the man she believes took Hailey's life.

"I wouldn't say anything, just smile. He's kept us in Hell and now his Hell is just beginning," Jones said.

I haven't been keeping up with everything released, but the last I read it was not reported that way.

It IS telling, so many things from the time Hailey disappeared have been telling IMO about her mom.

Really makes me so sad for Hailey.  She didn't have a chance.  JMO

Remains of Colorado City teen identified through DNA

SNYDER — The remains found a month ago in Scurry County were confirmed to be those of missing Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn, reported missing Dec. 28, 2010.

The remains were found March 16 near Lake J.B. Thomas.

During a brief press conference Friday Scurry County Sheriff Trey Wilson confirmed what many had speculated since the remains were found.

Investigators took no questions at the press conference. A press release from the Scurry County Sheriff’s Office listed no manner or cause of death in the case.

The remains were sent to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification and positively identified on Friday.

The remains were identified through DNA, said John Young, attorney for the Billie Jean Dunn, mother of Hailey.

Young did not attend the press conference and nor did his client Billie Jean Dunn.

“Billie is devastated, although we realized this could be the result. One can never be ready for the information that one’s child has died.” Young said. “Billie is joining with her son and other family members in central Texas and will be making arrangements to travel back to Colorado City over the weekend. She and her family will be trying to come to grips with the loss of Hailey and planning her services.”

Young believes the investigation will involve Shawn Adkins, the former live-in boyfriend of Billie Jean Dunn, and the only named suspect in the case. The remains were found 22 miles west of the community of Dunn, where Adkins lived with his grandmother, just after Hailey’s disappearance.

“I’m not suggesting he’s guilty of anything but based on my experience, I would not be surprised if he is the focus (of the investigation),” Young said.

Young said he spoke to the man who made the discovery in March and said some identifiable clothing may have helped investigators confirm that the remains were those of the missing teen.

The case

Hailey Dunn was first listed as a runaway, but on Jan. 3, 2011, a task force including FBI investigators, local, area and state law enforcement took on the investigation.

According to affidavits from Mitchell County, Hailey was last seen by Adkins on Sept. 27, when he said she went to spend the night with a friend. But the friend’s family would tell police that Hailey never showed up there that night, affidavits state.

Investigators looked at family members first and both Billie Jean Dunn and Adkins would flunk a polygraph. Investigators cleared Hailey Dunn’s biological father Clint Dunn almost immediately after she was reported missing.

Early on, Billie Jean Dunn asked Adkins to move out of their home after he flunked a polygraph test. Police later confiscated a computer from Adkins’ mother’s home, which was found to contain almost 109,000 images of child porn, bestiality and deviant acts. Billie Jean Dunn and Adkins reunited briefly, but separated again in 2011, this time for good.

David Dunn, Hailey's brother who was 16 at the time, told investigators he returned home at about 4 p.m. on Dec. 27 and pounded on the door for about five minutes. Upon entering the residence through the window, David Dunn observed Adkins "standing in the hallway with a deer in the headlights look," according to the affidavits.

Adkins never gave any statements to any member of the media except the Associated Press, when he denied any involvement with Hailey’s disappearance.

As recently as December, Billie Jean Dunn said Adkins is among those the FBI continues to investigate.

A community mourns

The identification of the remains spread like wildfire in the community of Colorado City Friday.

“There were many ladies crying at the press conference here,” said Jim Baum, owner of KAUM Radio and the former mayor.

Baum said he felt for everyone involved and added that “the kids will be devastated.”

“There will be a lot of kids talking amongst themselves this weekend,” Baum said. “It is very sad.”

Mark Merrell, principal of Colorado Middle School, said he was in a meeting at 3 p.m. with law enforcement before the announcement was made in Colorado City. Merrell held a staff meeting at 4 p.m. to inform teachers.

“There’s a lot of sorrow,” Merrell said. “Many of the teachers had her as a student through middle school. We always held out hope that maybe Hailey would come home but it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Merrell said the middle school was working with Region 14 office in Abilene so they could help provide counseling to any of the students who may need it.

The next step

So far no arrests have been made, but Adkins remains the only identified suspect.

It is not clear where the case will be tried, since Hailey’s remains were found in Scurry County and and she went missing from Mitchell County.

Baum said it could be that she was killed in Mitchell County and her remains were dumped in the neighboring county.

“We just don’t know yet,” Baum said.

The investigation is ongoing with Scurry County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, the Colorado City Police Department, the FBI and the Texas Rangers.

“The investigation into the circumstances of Hailey’s disappearance and death is ongoing,” the press release stated.

The announcement of Hailey Dunn's death was something no one wanted to happen but it was especially hard for those who vowed to bring her home alive.

For the last two years and four months, the Hope for Hailey Dunn Group has pushed through the rumors and patiently waited out any possible leads, but this time, their worst fears were confirmed.

"Her life was ended too early," volunteer, Stacie Campbell, said.

Remains found over a month ago in Scurry County were positively identified as the missing cheerleader.

Hope for Hailey Volunteer Stacie Campbell said she found out the news after getting a hysterical phone call from Hailey's mother, Billie.

"She was screaming. It was so hysterical I didn't know what it was at first," Campbell said. "She was screaming 'my baby.'"

Campbell said it's been an emotional roller coaster.

"You want it to be wrong and you want Hailey to be alive," she said. "She was a human with a family that adored her. Not just a person, not just a picture, not just a flier."

Strangers from all over, many who never even met Hailey, spent countless hours searching and sharing her story.

For Susie Griffith, a volunteer with Hailey Dunn - Inspirations of Faith, Hope and Love, this tragedy is personal.

"She's become a part of my life," Griffith said.

Volunteers are trying to understand how this happened.

"Whoever is guilty of this has to be evil," Griffith said. "To just be thrown away out in the elements. Alone."
