SALINAS, Calif. (CBS) Two weeks after California newlywed Ryann Bunnell Crow went missing, her husband, Jesse Crow, has been arrested and charged with her murder, according to Salinas police.

Ryann Crow’s family reported the 23-year-old missing on Feb. 2 when she didn't show up for work at a local flower shop in Salinas, Calif. about 60 miles south of San Jose. The general manager told CBS affiliate KION that Ryann Crow was a great employee and described her as a sweetheart.

Two searches for Ryann on Feb. 6th and the 13th in the Salinas River National Wildlife Refuge area, the last place where police were able to trace a signal from her phone, yielded few leads.

Ryann Crow’s first husband, Cody May, told KION that he spoke to her about a month ago. She told him she was going through a messy split with her husband Jesse Crow.

Jesse Crow had avoided all organized searches for his wife, as well as the media spotlight.

Ryann's family told KION that police told them around 9pm Tuesday that Jesse Crow was going to be arrested on suspicion of murder.

Ryann Crow's mother, Pamela Pipitone, told KION that the family hadn’t had much time to get to know her daughter's new husband.

"They had a world-wind relationship," Pipitone said. "She met him in July, and kind of got swept off her feet and then they got married in August, so we really haven't known him that long."

Salinas police did not release any information about how they came to charge Jesse Crow with murder or whether they have found Ryann's body.

Lalo Villegas, public information officer for the Salinas police, said Jesse Crow would likely be arraigned on the murder charge in the next few days.

Salinas Police Chief Louis Fetherolf, Monterey County Sheriff Mike Kanalakis and Special Agent Bob Cook of the Department of Justice held a 20-minute press conference at 2 p.m. today to speak about the disappearance of Salinas' Ryann Bunnell Crow.

Her vehicle was recovered in a residential area of Foster City, he said, after several well-publicized searches in Monterey County by family and friends. Her husband, Jesse John Crow, has been arrested on suspicion of killing her.

Fetherolf extended sympathy to her family at the conference. He said multiple interviews and a “considerable body of evidence” show Jesse Crow killed his wife, but the investigation continues to determine whether other people were involved. Tips are encouraged.

"We presented the district attorney's office with a substantial file,” Fetherolf said, adding that he expects Jesse Crow to be arraigned by Friday’s deadline.

He did, however, decline to release any details on evidence, interviews and other sensitive materials in the case, and praised media outlets who have used sensitivity and not publicized information that may have damaged the investigation.
.
Due to the circumstantial nature of case, he said, "We have to be very careful about protecting as much of the investigation as we can."

Other county agencies, Fetherolf said, have taken over the search for Ryann Bunnell Crow’s body, which he said may or may not be in Monterey County. He offered praise to various state and federal agencies who have assisted in the search for Ryann, the collection of evidence and interviews, and analysis of evidence in the case.

Villegas said evidence acquired by detectives leads police to believe Bunnell Crow is dead. A motive in her death has also been determined, he said. He declined to elaborate on the motive and evidence.
Despite speculative media reports, Villegas added that it is unknown if Bunnell Crow was pregnant.Jesse Crow, a 1995 graduate of North Monterey County High School, may be in court today. But according to the District Attorney's Office, Crow will most likely appear for his arraignment Friday or Monday.
Unusual case
Although Crow has been arrested, Villegas said, "The investigation is far from over."
Police continue to follow leads and comb through evidence while also searching for the missing woman.

When I first heard that this guy let the cops in when he had all those pot plants growing I thought he was an idiot. But if he was growing them under the pot clinic rules then perhaps not so much.

Edward - have you heard anything else about the police actually having her body?

I wonder if Ryann was not feeling well because either she was pregnant or he was drugging her?  If you grow pot (which personally I have no problem with - but it is illegal) you likely have access to other drugs.

I still do not understand what the motive for either of them to marry was - She may have been a young girl enamored with a him but why would he marry her?

The police said they are turning over the search to Others.
I think those others is an underwater SAR team. I also think I know a logical place of placement, and we will see if they find the body at the location I am thinking about. It is near where her cell phone last pinged.

Here is a reader comment from an internet article where locals are posting.

I knew this guy in High School and he's always been an asshole, so I'm not surprised this has happened. I recall one time he even locked a Teacher in a closet, while she was getting something out, she had left the keys in the door and in a quick minute he had locked her in and took the keys out. Everyone was so intimidated and afraid of him that no one did anything until the end of class. Even today she's very shaken up by students with similar behavior attitudes like Mr. Crow.

Crow's defense argues jail clothes skew media coverage    :2boohoo:

3:29 PM
Jesse John Crow didn't appear in court Wednesday for 40 minutes of legal jousting in his high-profile murder case. But his physical appearance - for media cameras - was the central issue.

Attorneys for the 33-year-old Prunedale man accused of murdering his wife, Ryann Bunnell Crow, 23, who vanished Jan. 30, waived his appearance, which would have put him before cameras in jail clothing.

Instead, the defense was granted a request that Crow be allowed to wear civilian clothes every time he comes to court - for pretrial hearings, as well as at trial.

Defense attorney Brian Worthington said the clothing issue was critical to protect Crow's presumption of innocence in a murder case that has garnered pervasive local media attention, as well as national coverage.

Superior Court Judge Russell Scott didn't grant a defense request that Crow be allowed in court for pretrial proceedings without shackles or restraints.

Scott said the Salinas court facility, in which many courtrooms are in portable buildings, is not secure enough to treat Crow differently from other inmates who are routinely shackled during pretrial proceedings.

"It's not exactly steel and cement," the judge, alluding to his courtroom in a portable building.

Worthington argued that media images of his client in restraints would go to the same issue of presumption of innocence and take a psychological toll on Crow.

Crow has been held in the Monterey County jail in lieu of

$3million bail since he was arrested Feb. 16 by Salinas police who investigated his wife's disappearance.

Ryann Crow was last seen driving in Prunedale on Jan. 30, and her family reported her missing Feb. 2, but her body has not been found. Her car was found in a Foster City neighborhood Feb. 9.

Deputy County Counsel Traci Kirkbride argued that bringing Crow to court in civilian clothes all the time would put an undue burden on the Sheriff's Office. She strongly objected to the defense request on shackles.

The only other time such defense requests were granted was in the case of John Kenney, an elderly Carmel Valley man who murdered two neighbors over a property dispute, she said.

Crow's appearance in jail clothing before a judge in a pretrial proceeding wouldn't prejudice the judge, Kirkbride said. As for shackles, she said, Kenney was elderly and frail while Crow is the opposite.

"From what I have seen, he seems to be in fairly good shape, and he's fairly young," she said outside court.

Crow's absence from the courtroom and the judge's ruling about his attire for future appearances short-circuited a possible showdown with several media representatives. They were on hand to contest an order by Judge Adrienne Grover at his Monday arraignment that barred media photography that would have showed Crow's orange-striped jail jumpsuit.

Outside court, Worthington said he still is concerned about images of his client in shackles, but he said that would be handled on "an appearance-by-appearance basis."

The judge set a March 3 hearing to schedule a preliminary hearing for Crow. He directed the prosecution and the defense to file briefs before then regarding pending media requests to make public now-sealed case documents, including sworn statements in support of search and arrest warrants.

Its so sad what happenend to this poor girl..and even worse where it happenened. Prunedale is a innocent hick town with great families, and for once its on the news, for all the wrong reasons. I grew up there, and to this day think it is a wonderful place to raise a family! Originally I started out reading about this case because of the location...and now its because i actually know the suspect! He was a good friend of my brothers and they graduated together. I didn't even recognize him, but i knew his name rang a bell. As a scared monkey poster i feel its my responsibility to let people what i know. My brother let me know that this kid always smoked, and sold marijuana throughout high school and was known as a stoner. Tis a shame a low life like this could steal the life of a beautiful woman, as well as taint the town of Prunedale with this horrible crime! RIP RYANN

Jesse John Crow, accused of killing wife Ryann, faces additional charges
March 24, 2010

A Prunedale man accused of killing his missing wife is expected to plead not guilty Friday to amended charges that he used a firearm to kill his wife.

The amended charge was filed by the Monterey County District Attorney's Office against Jesse John Crow, accused of slaying Ryann Bunnell Crow, whose body has not been found.

Crow is expected to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Crow was arrested Feb. 16 on suspicion of his wife's murder. Bunnell Crow was reported missing by her family on Feb. 2. According to court documents, Crow was the last person to see his wife.

Crow remains in county jail, withheld on a $3 million bail.

Tom Worthington, Crow's attorney, said this afternoon that the District Attorney's Office also added allegations of felon in possession of a firearm and cultivating marijuana. The cultivation of marijuana charge stems from Feb. 3, when Monterey County Sheriff's deputies allegedly seized more than 300 plants from Crow's home in Prunedale.

He used a gun and they have evidence of it..

They still do not have her.

This is where I believe she is located.. In the water next to the railroad tracks.
The star on the map does not represent where her cell phone was located..
This area is an inland estuary of sloughs and is all park.. The railroad runs through it and I theorize they wrapped up her body with tarp and rocks and tied it together with rope and threw her body off into the water in this area along the railroad tracks and most likely off the train trestle area..
This is the last known location of her cell phone. Her car was found 70+ miles away in another city.

Search Warrant Reveals Details In Jesse Crow Case
3 Warrants Remain Sealed

March 23, 2010

Action News has uncovered new information shedding new light on Jesse Crow and how police began their investigation into the man now accused of killing his wife Ryan Bunnell Crow in January.

The information comes from a search warrant that was released on Tuesday.

Details of the warrant describe a sophisticated marijuana growing operation in and around Jesse Crow's Prunedale home and how police first discovered it when Ryan Bunnell's sister and mother asked police to go to the home to talk to Jesse and find out if he knew where Ryann had been for the past few days.

When police arrived, Ryan's family had blocked Jesse's truck in the driveway and told police they believed Jesse had a history of abusing Ryan -- abuse that had gone unreported -- and they suggested Jesse had a drug operation because he didn't have a job, but he seemed to have plenty of money.

Action News also learned Jesse said the last time he saw Ryann was on the evening of Jan. 30 -- the last and latest time anybody can confirm they saw Ryann.

The warrant also calls attention to Crow's father -- a physician -- confirming that Dr. Crow runs a medical marijuana dispensary. The warrant said it operates out of Soledad.

Action News previously confirmed that the dispensary operates in Stockton. However, an office manager Action News spoke with at the clinic said her office does not dispense medical pot and never has.

There is still a lot more information about the investigation which remains under seal by court order.

Three warrants are under seal and Judge Russell Scott has yet to rule on whether or not those warrants should be opened to the public.

There may be a ruling on that on Wednesday during Jesse Crow's next scheduled court appearance.

New Charges Filed Against Jesse Crow
March 24, 2010
SALINAS, Calif- Jesse Crow was in court this morning and the DA's office has decided to file additional charges against him.

"We can not imagine why they chose to wait like this to this late date and file that amendment complaint without notice," said defense attorney Tom Worthington. In court today, prosecutors said they are making changes to the charges against Crow adding seven more charges, surprising the defense, "We were prepared to proceed we could not proceed in the face of this new material that had been kept from us until today," said Worthington.

The main revelation-- investigators think Crow used a gun to kill his wife in late January or early February, "We have an additional 400 pages of material that they served on us today even though a lot of this goes back to the middle of February," said Worthington.

Ryann Bunnell Crow's family reported her missing February 2nd. Court documents released Tuesday show her husband Jesse was the last person to see her and when police went to ask him about her disappearance they found dozens of pot plants in his Prunedale home. But today, Crow's attorney maintained his client is not guilty. "He is not responsible for her disappearance and we hope that she will turn up that she is ok but if not if indeed there has been a homicide he has pled not guilty to that charge," said Worthington.

Crow will be arraigned on the new charges Friday morning. The preliminary hearing, which was scheduled for Friday as well, will be moved to a later date.

Jesse Crow last person to see wife
March 23, 2010

Jesse Crow was the last person to see his wife Ryann Bunnell Crow on the day she went missing, according to court documents.

Jesse Crow told deputies he saw Bunnell Crow leave his Prunedale home at around 5 p.m. Jan. 30 in her own car, according to the search warrant affidavit filed in court by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Deputy Michael Smith requested the search warrant after seeing tools for an alleged indoor marijuana growing operation when he went to the house to question Crow about Bunnell Crow's disappearance, the document said.

When the home was later searched deputies allegedly found 300 marijuana plants.

Bunnell Crow’s family had asked the Salinas Police Department to send a deputy to speak with Crow when they reported Bunnell Crow missing on Feb. 2.

According to the statement used to request the search warrant, when Smith arrived at Crow’s home, both Shelley Bunnell, Ryann’s sister, and Pamela Pipitoni, Ryan’s mother, were at the house.

Ryann Bunnell Crow’s family had tried to reach Jesse Crow since his wife disappeared but were unsuccessful.

Then, on Feb. 2, Bunnell Crow’s family had followed Jesse Crow to a storage unit after spotting him in Prunedale area.

The family asked Crow to go to his home to speak to police, the documents said, but Crow reportedly refused “stating he was on his way to Santa Cruz.”

However, the documents said, Crow went back to his house after the confrontation. Bunnell Crow’s family followed him there and blocked his pickup truck in the driveway to wait for the deputy.

Crow has since been arrested on suspicion of homicide in his wife’s death, although her remains have not been found.

Crow pleaded not guilty on Feb. 22.

Jesse John Crow's arraignment on additional charges delayed

Jesse John Crow, 33, Prunedale, appears in court March 3 during a preliminary hearing in his murder case. Crow is charged with killing his wife, Ryann Bunnell Crow, 23. (Scott MacDonald)
A Prunedale man, accused of murdering his wife, is expected to plead not guilty to additional charges including using a firearm to kill her, next month.

Jesse John Crow, accused of slaying Ryann Bunnell Crow, was initially anticipated to enter the plea this morning, but his arraignment was continued to April 9 at the request of his defense lawyers.

This week, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office also added allegations of being a felon in possession of a firearm and cultivating marijuana.

The cultivation of marijuana charge stems from Feb. 3, when county sheriff's deputies allegedly seized more than 300 plants from Crow's home in the 7600 block of Chester Drive in Prunedale. The felon in possession of a firearm charge comes from a March 1997 conviction Crow received for possession of marijuana.
Crow was arrested Feb. 16 on suspicion of his wife's murder. Bunnell Crow was reported missing by her family two weeks earlier, Feb. 2. Her body has not been found.

Brian Worthington, an attorney for Crow, said the defense requested that the arraignment be delayed because of the “tremendous amount of new discovery” they received from the prosecution on Wednesday.

Crow remains in county jail on $3 million bail.

Jesse John Crow faces new charges, possible death penalty
by Sunita Vijayan • svijayan@thecalifornian.com • April 29, 2010

Comments (7)  The charges are mounting against Jesse John Crow, the Prunedale man accused of killing his wife and disposing of her still-missing body, and prosecutors now have a chance to pursue the death penalty.

The Monterey County District Attorney's Office on Wednesday filed a special circumstance to the existing murder charge against Crow, alleging that the crime was committed intentionally and carried out for financial gain.

Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Hulsey said the special circumstance makes Crow eligible, if convicted, for either execution or life in prison without the possibility of parole. The office has not yet decided which option it will pursue. Hulsey declined to go into detail on why prosecutors added the special circumstance, citing the ongoing investigation.

Crow, 33, was arrested Feb. 16 on suspicion of murdering Ryann Bunnell Crow, 23, who was last seen alive Jan. 30. Authorities said they have not found her body.

" Local Law Enforcement "
It appears..
They are not so good at finding people unless they trip over the dead body..

When somebody purchases rope and tarp.. add in some Rock
I am pretty sure that spells out water disposal ! hence the cell phone in a water area !!

I do not want to interfer in there investigation by going out to where I think this poor girl is located...
LE does not appear to read at scared monkey's.. they are behind in technology over there in Salinas. So much time spent on gang members who they find with ease in cars and in the street. finding a body in water is just beyond them I suppose.
I really doubt they disposed of the body in the san francisco bay at Foster City. Most like her body would be near the area first searched.

There was a suitcase found this morning with a body in it not far from Foster city where Ryan's car was located.

They have not identified the body yet but remember this area has a high population and it could be anyone in the suitcase.

Thanks Edward.  The article states that the condition of the body indicates the suitcase has only been in the water a few days.  I would guess that pretty much leaves out the possibility that she is Ryann.

I'm checking here regularly for updates.  Appreciate your posting.

Human Remains Found; Salinas Police Contacted
Ryann Bunnell Crow's Car Discovered In Foster City

UPDATED: 5:18 pm PDT May 28, 2010

Department is assisting Bay Area law enforcement agencies after human remains were found in the Union City waterfront area Thursday.

The remains were discovered across the Bay from where the car of Ryann Bunnell Crow, a missing Prunedale woman, was found in February.

Sources also tell Action News that the state of the decomposition of the remains indicate the victim died around the same time Crow disappeared.

Alameda Search and Rescue teams sent out 10 dive members and three cadaver dogs to search an ecological area after a torso, leg and arm were found scattered between the Dumbarton and San Mateo bridges. Authorities, including officers from the Salinas Police Department, set up a command post Friday on Veasy Street in Union City.

Crow was last seen alive on January 30. Her husband, Jesse John Crow, has been charged with her murder.

Investigators said they will conduct a DNA test on the bones, but that results may take a few months.

Jesse John Crow has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder. Last month, prosecutors said they may have evidence that Crow killed for money, which could make him eligible for the death penalty if convicted.

He is currently being held at the Monterey County Jail.

You pegged it Edward!  I have a question...I live in FL and there are a zillion swampy, gator infested areas, not to mention backwood roads everywhere in which to dump a body but why so many in the suitcases in open water where they do wash up?  Doesn't seem like the best place to get rid of someone.  Is it just so many murders there, the police not looking?  I don't get it!

Monterey County DA to make announcement today in Jesse John Crow case
BY SUNITA VIJAYAN • svijayan@thecalifornian.com • June 8, 2010

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said it will hold a press conference this afternoon to announce a major development in the Jesse John Crow case.

The press conference will be held at 4 p.m. at the District Attorney’s Office, 240 Church St., Salinas.

Crow, 33, is accused of killing his wife, Ryann Bunnell Crow, 23, who was reported missing Feb. 2. She was last seen alive Jan. 30.

Last month, District Attorney Dean Flippo said his office received information that Hayward police had found the human remains in an area near where the missing Salinas woman's car was found in Foster City in the Bay Area.

Hayward police contacted other agencies with missing-person cases after the discovery of human bones found scattered along the Hayward shore.

Hayward police Capt. Darryl McAllister said investigators found the remains spread across an area of about 300 yards after being notified by a man who saw a bone on the shoreline near the San Mateo Bridge.

The Alameda County coroner made a preliminary ruling that the bones are human.

Crow was arrested on Feb. 16 on suspicion of murder and is undergoing court proceedings.

A preliminary hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence for the case to proceed is scheduled for July 1 and 2.

In April, the District Attorney’s Office filed a special circumstance to the existing murder charge against Crow, accusing him of committing the crime intentionally and carrying it out for financial gain.

The special circumstance allows the District Attorney's Office the option to pursue the death penalty.

The office said it plans to make that determination after the preliminary hearing.

SALINAS, Calif- After detectives made a public announcement that the remains of Ryann Bunnell Crow were found, Jesse Crow was moved to an isolation cell in the Monterey County Jail.

Jesse Crow is accused of killing his wife and dumping her body. Several law enforcement agencies had been looking for the body of Ryann Bunnell for months when human remains were found on the Hayward water front and later identified as Ryann.

There have been no specific threats against Crow and his lawyers says that the move to isolation was done as a precaution.

Central Coast News Reporter Brooke Holmquist sat down with the public defender for Jesse Crow. To see the interview watch Central Coast News at 6pm or check back here.

How sad :(

Father of Ryann Bunnell Crow mourned
Family patriarch kept everyone's spirits up
June 21, 2010

Rod Bunnell, father of Ryann Bunnell Crow and the man who family members say kept everyone's spirits up despite four months of heartbreak, died Friday after suffering a stroke about three weeks ago.

"I would have loved for him to still be here," Shelley Bunnell said Sunday of her father. "But to know that [he and Ryann] are together, that does give me some comfort."

The 53-year-old electrician was born in Oregon. He was also a Eucharist minister at Madonna del Sasso church. His wife describes as a "happy-go-lucky" man with always a smile on his face.

"Rod had a great personality," said Teresa Dorney Bunnell of her husband. "Despite the past few months, he always came through with a smile. He lifted everyone's spirits."

Rod Bunnell's death comes about a week after the Monterey County District Attorney's Office announced on June 10 that remains found on the East Bay shoreline of Alameda County are those of Ryann Bunnell Crow.

Jesse John Crow, Ryann's husband, was arrested on suspicion of her murder on Feb. 16. The 23-year-old Ryann Bunnell Crow was reported missing Feb. 2. She was last seen alive Jan. 30

Shelley Bunnell said her father suffered the stroke a day after officials first found Ryann's remains. He had gotten better over the next couple of weeks.

On Friday, however, she said, his condition turned for the worse.

Bunnell said her father will be buried Saturday in Coos Bay, Ore. Locally, a rosary is set for Wednesday and a funeral service on Thursday at Madonna del Sasso.

On Father's Day, Shelley Bunnell said her family remembered her father through prayer and reminiscing of their favorite memories.

"He coached [Ryann and me] in softball. He called us 'kiddo,' " she said. "He was just a wonderful person."

Jesse John Crow found dead in jail cell
By MIKE NEMETH • mnemeth@thecalifornian.com • August 7, 2010

Jesse John Crow, the Prunedale man accused of killing his wife and dumping her body, was found dead this morning – hanging in his jail cell from a makeshift rope, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Jail deputies with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office found Crow, 33, hanging about 3 a.m.

Deputies entered the cell, removed Crow from the rope and started CPR.

He was rushed to Natividad Medical Center but could not be revived.

Authorities have told Crow’s family and his defense lawyer about his death.

Crow was in county jail awaiting a preliminary hearing on charges he murdered his wife, Ryann Bunnell Crow, and left her body on the East Bay shoreline of Alameda County.

Crow was arrested Feb. 16, two weeks after his wife was reported missing.

In April, the District Attorney's Office filed a special circumstance to an existing murder charge against Crow, accusing him of committing the crime intentionally and carrying it out for financial gain.

Crow also faced charges of using a firearm to commit a crime, being a felon in possession of a firearm, cultivating marijuana, attempted solicitation to commit a crime, and possession and transportation or sale of marijuana.

He had pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was being held on $3 million bail.

Most convicts do not 'rot in jail' anymore.  Many prisons are nearly as nice as a Holiday Inn Express. They tend to have more benefits than the average Joe...education, medical treatments, dental visits, exercise rooms...the list is endless. All paid for by you and me.

Jesse John Crow murder case would have proven guilt 'beyond any reasonable doubt,' prosecutors say
August 10, 2010

Jesse John Crow strangled his pregnant wife, shot her and hit her with a hammer on Jan. 30 out of fear that she would report his marijuana-growing operation, prosecutors revealed Monday.

Details of the murder were released nearly eight months after Ryann Bunnell Crow was last seen alive, and two days after investigators say Crow killed himself at the Monterey County Jail.

"We have no doubt that, if we had gone to trial, we would have prevailed," Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo said at a news conference at his Salinas office.

Officials said Crow hung himself early Saturday with a bed sheet in his jail cell. The Sheriff's Office announced Monday that he died from asphyxiation through hanging. His manner of death was deemed a suicide, the sheriff's coroner's office said.

Crow had been scheduled for a preliminary hearing, in which a judge decides whether enough evidence exists for a case to go to trial, in September.

Argument before death
Investigators said they had plenty of evidence for the case to proceed, including the presence of Bunnell Crow's blood in her husband's truck, videos and photos of her car in the East Bay area near where it was eventually found abandoned, and witness accounts.

"Based on all of the evidence that continued to mount over the months ... the case got stronger every day," Flippo said.

He thanked Ryann's family for inspiring law enforcement officers and prosecutors to work tirelessly on the case. Tears streamed down Shelley Bunnell's face at the press conference as Flippo spoke to her about her sister.

On Monday, Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Hulsey provided an overview of the prosecution's case against Crow, describing details of Bunnell Crow's final hours and her husband's elaborate planning for the disposal of her body in the Bay Area.

About 3:15 p.m. Jan. 30, Hulsey said, Bunnell Crow left her workplace at Swenson and Silacci Flowers in Salinas. She was planning to attend her father's birthday party, she said, but stopped by a home she shared with Crow on Chester Drive in Prunedale. Hulsey said a witness later told police that Crow and his wife began to argue over his infidelities, and that she threatened to expose his extensive marijuana growing operations.

Jesse John Crow brutally strangled his wife, Ryann Bunnell Crow, shot her and hit her in the head with a hammer the night she went missing, prosecutors said today.

Monterey County District Attorney officials laid out the case against Crow at a press conference in Salinas.

“We have no doubt that if we had gone to trial we would have prevailed,” said Dean Flippo, top prosecutor.

But that trial will never happen.

Months after Bunnell Crow’s body was found in the San Francisco Bay, officials said Crow hung himself early Saturday with a bed sheet in his Monterey County jail cell, where he was awaiting trial in the killing.

An autopsy shows Jesse Crow, 33, died of asphyxia due to hanging; the manner of death was ruled a suicide.

According to prosecutors, Bunnell Crow was dead by 6:30 p.m. Jan. 30.

At that point, officials said, Crow began calling friends for help. He asked his girlfriend to follow him on the highway, to see if there was blood dripping from his truck, according to prosecutors.

He conned Bay Area friends who worked with him in his pot business into helping get Bunnell Crow’s body to the East Bay, officials said.

One friend, fearful that Crow would kill again, agreed to drive around the state with Crow, making late-night purchases of bleach, a trash can and cement that Crow used to dispose his wife’s body, investigators said.

Over months of investigation, law enforcement said they located several witnesses, found Bunnell Crow’s blood in her husband’s truck, videos and photos of Ryann’s car in the East Bay near where her car was found.

“The evidence continued to mount,” Flippo said.

See video where lawyer explains exactly what happened when he murdered her.

Family to celebrate life of Ryann Bunnell Crow
Memorial service is set for Sept. 11

Ryann Bunnell Crow's mother says she hopes a memorial service to remember her 23-year-old daughter's life can help bring some healing to her family following an eight-month ordeal with her death.

"We didn't really get any closure," Pamela Pipitone said Friday. "I want the community to know what a special person [Ryann] was."

The Celebration of Life ceremony is set for 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the First Presbyterian Church, on 830 Padre Drive.

It will include a musical performance by Ryann Bunnell Crow's brother, Wes Ambrosini, 19, a soldier visiting from Afghanistan.

The public memorial comes about a month after Ryann Bunnell Crow's accused killer — her husband Jesse John Crow — was found hanging in his Monterey County Jail cell.

Prosecutors have said Bunnell Crow was killed Jan. 30 after she threatened to expose Crow's pot-growing enterprise in Prunedale. Her remains were found washed ashore in May in the East Bay.

Along with the chance to tell her daughter's story, Pipitone said, the memorial event will give the family a chance to thank many of the people who helped with the searches organized to look for her daughter.

"There were about 150 people in each of the searches," she said. "Half of them were people we knew; others were just wonderful people who wanted to help."

The memorial event will include music, food, a chance for friends and family to speak about Bunnell Crow, and a reception. Pipitone said her son, along with Salinas musician Tyee Miles, will play guitar.

Ambrosini, a member of the Army infantry 101st Screaming Eagles, was given 10 days of leave to visit his family, Pipitone said.

"It's all going to be positive things about her life. We don't want anything negative," she said. "It's going to be beautiful."

To attend

A Celebration of Life event to remember Ryann Bunnell Crow is set for 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the First Presbyterian Church, 830 Padre Drive.
