Pope on Pentecost: We are not alone, but helped and empowered by the Holy Spirit
19 May 2024, 10:50

In his homily for the Solemnity of Pentecost, Pope Francis reflects on how the Holy Spirit, operating in the Church with power and gentleness, never leaves us alone, and, if we let Him, gives us His presence and gifts to accomplish that for which us, alone, would have otherwise been impossible.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Even at the most challenging of times or amid the day-to-day struggles, the Holy Spirit and His gifts enable us to persevere...

Pope Francis gave this comforting reminder during his homily on the Solemnity of Pentecost on Sunday in the Vatican, marking the end of the Easter Season.

During the Eucharistic celebration in St. Peter's Basilica, the Pope drew his cue from the account of Pentecost in the Acts of the Apostles, which he observed, shows the Holy Spirit’s operating in the Church, both in us and in mission, with the characteristics of power and gentleness.

The Pope remembered how the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples and remained at their side, as the Paraclete "who transformed their hearts and instilled in them a serene courage which impelled them to pass on to others their experience of Jesus and the hope which motivated them."

Pope's Pentecost Regina Coeli: How can I better listen to Holy Spirit?
19 May 2024, 12:05

During his Regina Coeli address on the Solemnity of Pentecost, Pope Francis urges faithful to ask themselves how well they listen to the Holy Spirit, and offers suggestions on how to better do so, including meditating on the Gospel daily and staying close to the Lord in prayer.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

May we be docile to the voice of the Holy Spirit, Pope Francis prayed this Solemnity of Pentecost during his noon Regina Coeli address in the Vatican.

As he addressed the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square from his window of the Apostolic Palace, the Pope recalled that today we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Mary and the Apostles.

Highlighting that in today's Gospel, Jesus speaks about the Holy Spirit and says that He will teach us “whatever He hears,” the Pope asked, "what does this expression mean? What has the Holy Spirit heard? What will He speak about?"

Shedding light on the responses, the Pope said He speaks to us with words that express wonderful feelings, such as affection, gratitude, entrustment, and mercy, "that reveal to us a beautiful, luminous, concrete, and lasting relationship, such as the eternal Love of God."

Pope Francis says conservative critics have a ‘suicidal attitude’
By Jonah McKeown
CNA Staff, May 16, 2024 / 16:58 pm

In an interview with “60 Minutes” airing this Sunday, Pope Francis takes aim at his “conservative critics” in the United States, reportedly saying a conservative is someone who “clings to something and does not want to see beyond that.”

“It is a suicidal attitude,” the pope said as reported by “60 Minutes,” which released a brief clip of the upcoming interview conducted by CBS’ Nora O’Donnell.

“Because one thing is to take tradition into account, to consider situations from the past, but quite another is to be closed up inside a dogmatic box.”

The full interview, conducted April 24, will air as part of “60 Minutes” on May 19 from 7-8 p.m. ET on CBS and will be available on Paramount+. More of the interview will air in an hourlong prime-time special on Monday, May 20, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+.

Pope to Loyola University staff: Be ‘diligent dreamers’
20 May 2024, 11:33

Pope Francis gives an unusual piece of advice to representatives of Loyola University Chicago, urging them to become “diligent dreamers.”
By Stefan Von Kempis

“To move forward in life, we need to dream," said Pope Francis during his audience on Monday with staff from Loyola University. "A person who has lost the ability to dream lacks creativity, lacks poetry, and life without poetry does not work."

Loyola University is based in Chicago and is run by the Jesuit order, to which the Pope also belongs. In recent days, members of the university's board of trustees have been making a pilgrimage to places associated with St. Ignatius of Loyola. The Basque-born nobleman Ignatius was the founder of the Jesuit order, back in the 16th century.

"Always keep alive in you this desire to go on a journey, on pilgrimage,” said the Pope.

Pope Francis on female deacons: ‘No’
By Daniel Payne
CNA Staff, May 21, 2024 / 11:26 am

Pope Francis has once again come out strongly against an ordained female diaconate, reiterating what for the Holy Father has been a consistently firm stance against women becoming clergy.

The pope made the remarks this week in an interview with CBS News anchor Norah O’Donnell during an appearance on the network’s flagship magazine program, “60 Minutes.”

“You will have many young boys and girls that will come here at the end of next month for World Children’s Day,” O’Donnell said to the pope at one point during the interview. “And I’m curious, for a little girl growing up Catholic today, will she ever have the opportunity to be a deacon and participate as a clergy member in the Church?”

“No,” the pope replied.

Pope: ‘Chinese Catholics bear witness to faith in charity and mercy’
21 May 2024, 10:02

Pope Francis recalls the 100th anniversary of the Concilium Sinense in Shanghai, and encourages Chinese Catholics to testify to their faith through works of mercy and charity, while promoting the harmony of social coexistence.
By Devin Watkins

The Pontifical Urban University in Rome hosted a conference on Tuesday to mark the 100th anniversary of the Concilium Sinense, the first and only Council of the Chinese Catholic Church, which was held in Shanghai in May and June 1924.

Pope Francis sent a video message to participants attending the event, calling the anniversary “a precious occasion for many reasons.”

He noted that the Sinense Council marked an important step forward for the Catholic Church in China.

“The Holy Spirit,” he said, “brought them together, allowed harmony to grow among them, led them along paths that many of them would not have imagined, even overcoming perplexities and resistance.”

Pope Francis: Palliative care a sign of closeness to those who suffer
21 May 2024, 22:36

Pope Francis addresses a message of hope to participants in the International Interfaith Symposium on Palliative Care, saying we are called to accompany those who suffer and who have difficulty finding reasons for hope.
By Christopher Wells

“Hope is what gives us strength in the face of questions raised by life's challenges, difficulties, and anxieties, Pope Francis says in a message to participants in an international interfaith symposium on palliative care taking place in Toronto, Canada.

Reflecting on the theme of the gathering – “Towards a Narrative of Hope” – Pope Francis says, “As members of the human family and especially as believers, we are called to accompany, with love and compassion, those who struggle and have difficulty finding reasons for hope.”

Especially those who are suffering from sickness and approaching death, the Pope continues, “need the witness of hope provided by those who care for them and who remain at their side.”

He goes on to explain that palliative care, in attempting to lessen the burden of suffering is a “concrete sign of closeness and solidarity to those are suffering,” and can help those facing the end of life and their families and loved ones “to accept the vulnerability, frailty, and finitude that mark human life in this world.”

Pope Francis clears path for canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis
23 May 2024, 10:38

Pope Francis recognizes a miracle attributed to Blessed Carlo Acutis and another to Blessed Giuseppe Allamano, and approves the canonization of 11 martyrs in Syria.
By Devin Watkins

Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, met Thursday with Pope Francis, who approved the promulgation of several decrees related to the causes of canonization of several men and women.

For young Catholics, the most interesting is surely the recognition of a miracle attributed to Blessed Carlo Acutis.

The young layman was born on May 3, 1991, in London, England, and died on October 12, 2006, in Monza, Italy, succumbing to leukemia at the age of 15.

Pope Francis beatified the millenial in 2020 in Assisi, where Blessed Carlo had made multiple pilgrimages and where his mortal remains rest.

Pope reminds plastic surgeons that true beauty reflects the image of God
23 May 2024, 10:54

Pope Francis reflects on the true nature of beauty during his address to a group of plastic surgeons.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis on Thursday received in audience a group of plastic surgeons and thanked them for their compassionate service, particularly in helping sick children.

The physicians present were in Rome to attend the AEXPI meeting taking place 24-25 May on the theme “When science meets beauty.”

He highlighted the fact that as men, doctors, and Christians, they respond to a calling that goes well beyond physical aesthetics.

True beauty, the Pope noted, transcends what is visible to the eye.

This beauty, he added, “is not subject to trends programmed by the business of fashion and the culture of appearance but is connected to the truth of man, to his most intimate being, which we cannot disfigure.”

Pope to Hospitaller and Camillian Sisters: ‘Be audacious in love for the sick'
23 May 2024, 11:44

Pope Francis holds a joint audience with the Sisters Hospitallers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Daughters of St. Camillus, and urges them to be audacious on behalf of the sick and poor whom they assist.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis, on Thursday, addressed a group of Sisters Hospitallers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Daughters of St. Camillus on the occasion of their respective General Chapters. Both congregations are devoted to assisting the sick and the poor.

Opening his address, the Pope encouraged the religious sisters to heed the example of their foundresses and founders, pointing to their audacity and the “holy madness of love” that drove them to found their Congregations in the late 19th century. “If we don’t have love, we are finished,” he noted.

Pope to Scholas students: Rediscover life's playful dimension
23 May 2024, 18:09

Pope Francis closes the first ‘International Meeting of Meaning' in the Vatican, organised by Scholas Occurrentes in collaboration with CAF - Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, and responds candidly to four questions.
By Sebastián Sansón Ferrari

"What is your earliest memory?" was the question that triggered the dialogue between Pope Francis and participants in the first ‘International Meeting of Meaning,’ organized by Vatican foundation Scholas Occurrentes from 21 to 23 May in the Vatican.

At the closing of this event in the Vatican's New Synod Hall, the participants presented to the Holy Father the conclusions of their work, and engaged the Pope in a lively dialogue in Spanish.

For three days, rectors of leading universities from around the world, personalities from the worlds of culture, politics, and technology, influential young people in their communities, and artists, sought concrete solutions to the challenges of the ‘University of Meaning,’ whose management the Holy Father has entrusted to Scholas.

Responding to the first question, Pope Francis recalled, as he has done on other occasions, when his grandmother would take him home and spend the day with them until lunch, and how they spoke the dialect of Piedmont in northern Italy. He called 'Piedmontese' his "first language," adding, "Then I learned Spanish."

Fiducia supplicans: Fernández visits Tawadros
23 May 2024, 13:36

The meeting in Cairo centred on the Coptic Orthodox Church’s March 2024 declaration rejecting "same-sex marriage".
By Vatican News

On Wednesday, May 22, Pope Tawadros II, the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, received Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, in Cairo. They discussed the declaration Fiducia supplicans and the Coptic Holy Synod’s March 7 statement regarding "same-sex marriage". This was reported in a communiqué from the Coptic Orthodox Church itself.

Fernández conveyed greetings from Pope Francis, recalling the pair's previous meetings. The focus of the discussion was on the declaration Fiducia supplicans, published last December by the Vatican Dicastery. In March, the Coptic Synod released a declaration reaffirming its rejection of “so-called same-sex marriage.” Cardinal Fernández reiterated that both Fiducia supplicans and the subsequent doctrinal declaration, Dignitas infinita, affirm that marriage is solely the union between a man and a woman open to the transmission of life, and confirmed the Catholic Church’s opposition to "same-sex marriage".

Vatican News has been informed that the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith explained to His Holiness Tawadros II that the Catholic Church shares the teachings of the March 7 declaration, and has a positive view of its pastoral approach. Regarding Fiducia supplicans, Fernández explained that—as Pope Francis told the DDF plenary assembly — these blessings are not given to the union between individuals. If two people present themselves together, they can be blessed, making the sign of the cross over each and adding a short prayer. But this must happen briefly, spontaneously, without any rite, without liturgical vestments, and without any outward manifestation that might confuse this blessing with a marriage.
