Government-party AVP: Motion against construction of Ritz-Carlton

ORANJESTAD — The entire government-party AVP still hopes to halt the construction of the five-star Ritz-Carlton hotel through a motion. One is still working on the motion but in a press report, the party already announced that the motion would be introduced during the follow-up debate in the parliament on the granting of terrains for construction of hotels and condominiums.

With the motion, the party opposes the decision of their government who had recently given the green light for the hotel project. At the time, the cabinet stated it could not wriggle out of the contract that had been concluded during the latter days of the MEP-government. According to Premier Mike Eman (AVP), a breach of contract would cost millions.

However, the AVP-party now wants the government to halt the building activities immediately and withdraw the construction permit.

In the meantime, the government is to obtain external legal advice to see whether the contract could still be terminated. In addition, the green party wants one to examine how the terrain – where the hotel is to arise – could be preserved for anglers and water sportsmen.

According to State-member, Juan David Yrausquin (AVP), one is still working on the exact contents of the motion.

The latter will be introduced during the continuance of the States-debate. “The motion will include many more items, but that will become clear during the public meeting.”

The debate should have continued last Friday, but States-chairman Andy Lee (AVP) postponed such until further notice. “I decided to adjourn the meeting as emotions were still roused and to avoid confrontations or even scuffles.” The meeting had been adjourned last week Wednesday after a verbal confrontation in the corridors between State-members Yrausquin and Xiomara Maduro (MEP). This had developed into a shouting match in the parliament room between both parliamentarians. A new date for the debate has not been fixed yet. Lee: “It will not be possible this week and we will be leaving for the Netherlands afterwards with a States-delegation to discuss the National laws. This States-meeting could be continued after our return on April 16th.” Last week, the parliament-chairman stated that the mutual atmosphere within the States is ‘becoming worse’. He addressed the party-leaders of both AVP and opposition-party MEP on this matter.

In the meantime, one is also searching for legal ways outside the States to halt the arrival of the Ritz-Carlton. Environmental institute Fanapa is currently evaluating whether there is any point in starting a legal case against Ritz-Carlton. “However, nothing has actually been determined yet,” says Chairman Ramsay Acosta. “We are currently obtaining legal advice.” He confirms that several people, including lawyers, are thinking along with his initiative, in the background.

These deaths were a terrible tragedy that could have been avoided if Aruba enforced its laws, and meted out punishment accordingly.  Instead, their LE is corrupted, their OM is useless, and their judiciary is defunct.  And Aruban citizens know that - they got that message loud and clear when Joran, Deepak, Satish and Paulus got away with the kidnapping, rape and murder of Natalee.

I wonder if there is any shame in the hearts of Aruban citizens who sat by and not only said and did nothing when their LE and govt did this same thing to Natalee's family, but actively protested against them.

I wonder if they thought at the time that their LE and govt would only fail the victim, if the victim was a tourist?  I wonder if they thought that their LE and govt would never, ever fail them in this same manner?

I wonder if any of them now regrets not standing up against their LE and govt when they did this do Natalee and her family......

This is about the accident where Walter Franken and his two children were killed, and Cheremy Croes was driving the car that struck them.  It seems the family still has a lot of questions and aren't getting any answers, or seemingly any response at all.  If I understand correctly they think another car may have been involved too.

I found the trap sonar target at 1:42 am on Christmas morning.  I was asked if I had any targets to investigate with the ROV on Dev 29th.  I did.  We then performed the 1st ROV dive and confirmed the sonar target was the trap.  This was the first ROV dive performed.  No other dives were performed prior to this.  I kept the sonar target list very confidential.  I didn't need people knowing about it and people on board knew well enough not even to ask.  When it was time to dive I have the target location. Until then, it was kept confidential.

Good points jen.  However, I don't think any of those protesting have ever been ashamed for a second.  Any part of that group that John Merryweather and/or Julia Renfro were able to gather to protest anything regarding Natalee's case were more than likely some that would also be subject to the same "special treatment" that Cheremy Croes was afforded in that car accident.  Both protests that I'm aware of in July and Nov 2005 were actually a small number of people in relation to the population.

I think the SILENT MAJORITY of the people in Aruba knew in their hearts, from what they'd witnessed through the years, exactly what was happening with Natalee's case.  That same majority watches in disgust every time Joran van der Sloot benefits yet again from his crime and reminds the world what he and his father and friends got away with in Aruba.  You would think they might be disgusted enough at this point to make Joran feel a little unwelcome sitting around on the beach...gambling in the casinos...and whatever else he's doing when he's there.  But instead, their silence continues.  The murderers are free to do as they please, and Aruba will forever have a black cloud over it.

If anyone watched the funeral procession of the Franken family members that were killed, and the numbers of people who lined the streets with tears streaming down their faces.  The devastated school children being comforted by their parents at the loss of their 12 year old friend Lorraine, releasing balloons in her memory...  The many college students who watched Mrs. Franken being presented her son Randy's diploma that he should have received at his graduation, at the back of the hearse carrying his body ...  The grown men shedding tears at the loss of their friend Walter, from my understanding someone who would help anyone in need... 

Well, the numbers were much greater than in either of the protests from 2005.  Many of those same people were at the site of the accident the night it happened, they saw the blood being taken from Walter's arm before he was removed from the car he died in.  They all know the other driver was excluded from the same test.  If they didn't witness it themselves, we all know how fast everyone on the island knew it!

Will they get behind this family of THEIR OWN and demand that this family receive the answers they deserve...demand justice?  Or will they continue to remain silent?

I guess we'll have to wait and see...
