Title: Anyone have crime stats for Aruba?
Post by: Cerulean on June 24, 2005, 05:14:30 PM
If you could post them, that would help.  If you could cite the sources all official like.  If you have any stuff to supplement that like interviews with domestic violence shelters and rape crisis centers and polls of citizens to say if they have been victimized by crime.  What is the population on a daily basis including tourists?

The info that you need seems hard to come by. There's a bit at www.usatoday.com/travel/news/2005-06-14-aruba-image_x.htm?csp=34 and of course you could check the CIA World Fact Book to see what they have.

Good USA today article.

They are obviously hiding the their crime statistics.  Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.  They do have some problems, apparently but less than other places.  I sent a letter to Aruba Today asking them to write in detail about their crime statistics and crime rates.

I know compared to other islands and Mexico that Aruba is relatively safe.  I've been there twice and will be returning in November.  If you leave valuables in a rental car chances are that they will be gone upon your return.  For those familar with Aruba, my best friend and I have walked at night from El Gacho back to the casino in town at night without a worry.  I have heard of drug dealers approching tourists but not in an aggressive manner.  I really believe this is an unfortunate isolated incident and will have no concern when I return.  No more than when I travel anywhere that is!

Thanks everyone.  Looks like Aruba is widely considered safer than other places in the vicinity, or not even in the vicinity, but that they have some problems.

EVERY country has problems with crime but from what I just read.....Aruba has no REAL problems compared to other countries in MYYYYY opinion. When I went to a certain country, I had to worry about being kidnapped (coming from America), arms being chopped off b/c of my gold bracelet (hanging your arms out the taxi window), etc....

ARUBA
CRIME: Street crime is low, but there have been incidents of theft from hotel rooms. Armed robbery has been known to occur. Valuables left unattended on beaches, in cars and in hotel lobbies are easy targets for theft.

Car theft, including that of rental vehicles for joy riding and stripping, can occur. Vehicle leases or rentals may not be fully covered by local insurance when a vehicle is stolen or damaged. Be sure you are sufficiently insured when renting vehicles and jet skis. For more information see the section below entitled “Special Circumstances.”
