Pope Francis celebrates Easter Sunday Mass in St Peter's Square
17 April 2022, 12:00
Pope Francis celebrates Mass with 100,000 faithful, united in the joy of Easter and in the message of peace brought by the risen Jesus
.
By Vatican News staff reporter
On Sunday, the celebration of Easter Mass in a crowded, sunlit St Peter's Square began with the rite of "Resurrexit" on the parvis of the square decorated with 40,000 flowers brought from Holland.
Deacons opened the doors of the icon of the Most Holy Saviour, which Pope Francis incensed the icon and around 100,000 faithful, returning after two years of pandemic to celebrate Easter Sunday together.
Risen from the dead
The first reading, taken from the Acts of the Apostles, recalling St Peter's words to the Colossians, was followed by the singing of the Easter Sequence, after which the Gospel of John was proclaimed in Latin and Greek - recounting the discovery of the empty tomb and the disciples' bewilderment at not having yet understood the Scripture, "that He was to rise from the dead".
The Pope and the assembly then fell silent after the proclamation of the Word of God.

Pope Francis celebrates Mass in St. Peter’s Square for Easter 2022
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Apr 17, 2022 / 04:00 am
The Gospel reading, John 20:1-9, was proclaimed in Latin and Greek. The passage recounts the moment in which Mary Magdalene and the apostles Peter and John found the empty tomb after Jesus’ resurrection.
Instead of giving a homily after the Gospel, following a custom of the last few years, Pope Francis kept a silence of several minutes for prayer and reflection

Pope at Easter Urbi et Orbi: May we be won over by the peace of Christ!
17 April 2022, 12:23
In his Easter "To the Church and to the World" message, Pope Francis announces that Jesus, the Crucified One, is risen, and he remembers victims of war, all those suffering around the world, and appeals ardently that the peace of Christ may enter our lives, our homes, and our countries
.
By Thaddeus Jones
Pope Francis presided over the Easter celebrations in sun and flower-filled St. Peter's Square, crowded with pilgrims in a way not seen since before the pandemic.
A brilliant display of forty thousand flowers and plants turned St. Peter's Square into a garden, thanks to the annual gift by florists from the Netherlands.
Following the Easter Vigil liturgy in St. Peter's Basilica on Saturday, the Pope presided over the Mass of Easter Day with an estimated 100,000 pilgrims in the Square on a breezy, cool Spring morning.
As in previous years, the Pope did not deliver a homily, but spoke at 12 pm when he gave his traditional Easter message followed by his blessing "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) from the central loggia of St. Peter's Basilica.

'Faces of the Gospels': Pope Francis reflects on amazement of encountering Jesus
18 April 2022, 09:47
In a programme curated by the Vatican's Dicastery for Communication in collaboration with Italy's RAI Cultura, which aired Easter evening on state-run TV station RAI1 in Italy, Pope Francis explores various Gospel encounters with Jesus and their protagonists
.
By Vatican News staff reporter
“Love is continuous contact. It is continuous talking and listening. That is why I insist that we have direct contact with the Gospels... If you do not have contact with the living Christ, the one of the Gospel,” Pope Francis says, you will have contact with ideas, doctrines and ideologies about the Gospel, that may or may not have come from Jesus.
“Redemption was not done by doctrines, but by a Person.” Even if you know all the dogmas, but do not have contact with the Gospel, you will only be Catholic in your head and not in your heart. Being a Catholic, being a Christian, insists Pope Francis, requires contact with Jesus.
This is how the Pope began a programme entitled Volti dei Vangeli ('Faces of the Gospels'), which was curated by the Dicastery for Communication in collaboration with the Vatican Apostolic Library, the Vatican Museums, and Italian television’s Rai Cultura, and aired Easter Sunday evening on Italy’s state-run TV channel RAI1 throughout Italy. Renato Cerisola directed and was responsible for photography, while Michelangelo Palmacci was responsible for the original music.

Pope at Regina Coeli: Be courageous and proclaim the joy of Easter!
18 April 2022, 12:08
On the Monday in the Octave of Easter, Pope Francis encourages us to take to heart the Risen Lord's reassuring words, "Do not be afraid", and to share the joy of Easter as witnesses to the truth sets us free

Pope Francis spoke to pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square on a brilliant Spring morning the day after Easter ahead of the recitation of the Regina Coeli.
The Pope reflected on the day's Gospel reading, which recounts when the Risen Jesus appeared to the women who went to his tomb, saying two things to them that we too can take to heart.

Pope to Italian teenagers: ‘Share your fears and they disappear’
18 April 2022, 19:01
Pope Francis presides over a prayer vigil with thousands of teenage pilgrims from Italy, and urges young people to cast aside all fears and seek Jesus with all their hearts
.
By Devin Watkins
A large group of young Italian pilgrims held a prayer vigil with Pope Francis on Easter Monday evening under the banner: “Follow Me.”
The event marked the first time a large event that was not a Mass was held in St. Peter’s Square since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, over 2 years ago. The prayer vigil was organized by the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI), and saw several teenagers share their experience of trials and faith and receive the Pope’s encouragement and blessing.
Some 80,000 Italian teenagers heard a girl named Alice tell about her suffering at the death of her grandmother and how she eventually understood how to turn her pain into a gift for others.
Another girl named Sofia spoke about her loneliness during the Covid-19 lockdowns, and how a new friend taught her to view life through different eyes full of hope and joy.

Cardinal Parolin discusses the future of Vatican diplomacy
By Andrea Gagliarducci
Vatican City, Apr 19, 2022 / 03:00 am
When it comes to diplomacy, the Holy See cannot pick and choose which challenges are the most urgent. Rather, it must simply address whatever issues need to be faced, from the wars in Yemen and Ukraine to defending Western Christians from the threats posed by new laws
.
That is what Cardinal Pietro Parolin said in the fifth and final part of his interview with CNA. The Vatican Secretary of State also spoke about the priorities of pontifical diplomacy and how it might look in the future. (In Part 1 of the hourlong interview, he addressed the Vatican’s efforts to end the Ukraine war, in Part 2, the reform of the Roman Curia, in Part 3, relations with China, and in Part 4, the promotion of peace.)
To understand what the future of Vatican diplomacy will be, we must look back. Parolin, who served under John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis, is a privileged witness to the evolution of the Holy See’s diplomatic work.

Pope at Audience: Elderly must be loved and honoured
20 April 2022, 09:30
During the first Wednesday General Audience in St. Peter's Square in over two years, Pope Francis highlights the importance of honouring the elderly, and calls for young people to be educated about life and its stages
.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ
Pope Francis continued his series of reflections on old age during his catechesis at the General Audience on Wednesday, the first held in St. Peter's Square since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic over two years ago.
The Holy Father noted that through the Word of God (Sir 3:3-6, 12-13.16), we explore a passage on the frailty of old age, marked by “the experiences of confusion and despondency, of loss and abandonment, of disillusionment and doubt.”
He explained that this experience of our frailty can occur at any stage of life. In old age, it produces less of an impression – or even annoyance, while the more serious wounds of youth and childhood, “rightly provoke a sense of injustice and rebellion, a strength to react and fight.”
The wounds of old age - even serious ones - the Pope said, are accompanied by the feeling that “life is not contradicting itself, because it has already been lived.”

Cardinal Parolin Orders All Vatican Vaccine Mandates to Remain in Place
The Holy See has chosen not to follow the lead of many EU countries, including Italy, that are already easing their COVID-19 restrictions
.
Edward Pentin April 20, 2022
VATICAN CITY — Despite a steady lifting of COVID-19 restrictions worldwide and the elimination of all rules in some countries, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state, has ordered that the Vatican’s tight controls will continue.
In a decree issued April 20, the cardinal said the decision had been taken due to the continuation of the current pandemic situation, which “requires specific extraordinary and exceptional measures to counter it and ensure the safe conduct of activities.” The Vatican also published on Wednesday, for the first time, a March 30 order from the president of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State that extended all restrictions until April 30 for personnel and visitors to the small territory.
On April 20, the German Catholic news agency KNA reported that Benedict XVI’s personal secretary Archbishop Georg Gänswein has had COVID-19 since April 11. Despite being triple vaccinated he remains in quarantine as he continues to test positive for the virus.
Archbishop Gänswein has assured the faithful that Benedict XVI and all others in the Pope Emeritus’ Mater Ecclesiae residence have tested negative for the virus.

Pope Francis: A true educator accompanies, listens and dialogues
21 April 2022, 11:52
Before the General Audience on Wednesday, the Pope met with a delegation from the "Global Researchers Advancing Catholic Education Project," reiterating the importance of a dynamic education
.
Tiziana Campisi - Vatican City
To educate is not "to fill one's head with ideas," because "automatons" are formed, but to walk together with people in a "tension between risk and security." This is what Pope Francis said in an impromptu speech - after handing over his prepared words - to a delegation of the "Global Researchers Advancing Catholic Education Project" (GRACE), a new international research project promoted by volunteers with the aim of promoting the values of Catholic education in respect of identity and dialogue. The meeting took place in the atrium of the Paul VI Hall before the general audience.

Ukraine: Pope Francis joins UN appeal for Easter truce
21 April 2022, 12:33
Pope Francis and the Holy See welcome the UN request for a "ceasefire" on the occasion of the celebration of Easter according to the Julian calendar, on 24 April
.
By Vatican News staff reporter
"Nothing is impossible for God" are the words contained in a Vatican communiqué, which states that the Holy See and the Pope join the UN appeal for a truce in view of Easter, which, according to the Julian calendar, is celebrated on 24 April.
The request was promoted by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, in agreement with Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and was launched on 19 April.
“Easter is a season for renewal, resurrection and hope. It is a time for reflection on the meaning of suffering, sacrifice, death, and rebirth. It is meant to be a moment of unity.”

Canada's Manitoba Métis Federation shares pain with Pope Francis
21 April 2022, 21:31
Some fifty members of the Manitoba Métis Federation are in Rome to pursue a journey of reconciliation with the Church after the findings regarding abuse in Canada's "residential schools"
.
By Salvatore Cernuzio & Linda Bordoni
Pope Francis on Thursday received 55 indigenous peoples of the Métis Manitoba Federation from Canada in the Vatican’s Clementine Hall.
The Manitoba Métis Community has consistently asserted and protected its rights and identity as a self-governing people, and in recent times has been recognized in Canada as the Manitoba Métis Federation.
This is why the members of this Federation - known as "Red River Métis"- came to Rome as a separate entity and did not participate in the Pope's audiences with other groups of Canada's indigenous peoples (Métis, Inuit, and First Nations), who were received in the Vatican at the beginning of April.

Pope to 'La Nacion': I am ready to do everything to stop the war
22 April 2022, 14:29
In an interview with Argentinian daily newspaper 'La Nacion,' Pope Francis says even if he is not planning to go to Kyiv or meet Patriarch Kirill in the near future, "there are always" ongoing efforts to arrive at peace in Ukraine. "The Vatican never rests," the Pope insists, noting, "I cannot tell you the details because they would cease to be diplomatic efforts. But the attempts will never stop.

Pope Francis says he is ready to do everything to stop the war in Ukraine, and insists that the Vatican is working tirelessly diplomatically to achieve peace.
The Holy Father gave this assurance in an interview with the Argentinian daily newspaper La Nacion published 21 April, telling journalist Joaquin Morales Solá, that even if he is not planning to go to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv or meet Patriarch Kirill in the near future, "there are always" efforts to arrive at peace in Ukraine.

Pope commends Cardinal’s explanation of curial reform document
22 April 2022, 16:19
In a preface to a book-length interview with Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga on the Apostolic Constitution "Praedicate evangelium," Pope Francis says the Honduran prelate and head of the Council of Cardinals “adequately unravels the meaning and itinerary of this meticulous and decisive work of revision and proposals.”
By Christopher Wells
Pope Francis has praised Honduran Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga for a new interview in which the President of the Council of Cardinal Advisors discusses the new Apostolic Constitution Praedicate evangelium and the reform of the Roman Curia.
The Holy Father notes that the ongoing reform has its roots in the Second Vatican Council, and has been pursued by his immediate predecessors going back to Pope St Paul VI. More immediately, Pope Francis recalls that in the General Congregations prior to the Conclave that elected him, the Cardinals strongly urged that the new Pope would undertake a new reform of the Curia, a reform they saw as urgent and necessary.

Pope Francis’ agenda canceled for needed ‘medical checkups,’ Vatican says
By Hannah Brockhaus
Rome Newsroom, Apr 22, 2022 / 04:52 am
Pope Francis’ agenda was cleared on Friday for needed medical checkups, a Vatican spokesperson said
.
Francis, who is 85 years old, has been suffering from pain in his right knee, causing him to take smaller roles in some Vatican liturgies and to remain seated more often.
“The pope has slowed down his activities today because of medical checkups that are needed today. That is why the schedule is empty today,” Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office, said on April 22.
The pope’s movements have been visibly more limited since the start of the year.

Vatican clears Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz of negligence in Polish abuse cases
By Hannah Brockhaus
Rome Newsroom, Apr 22, 2022 / 05:22 am
The Vatican has ended an investigation into allegations that Polish Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz failed to investigate claims of clerical sex abuse when he was archbishop of Krakow, saying his actions were “correct.”
“The analysis of the collected documentation made it possible to assess these actions of Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz as correct and, therefore, the Holy See decided not to proceed any further,” the apostolic nunciature in Poland announced on Friday.
Dziwisz, 82, was archbishop of Krakow from 2005-2016, after more than three decades as the personal secretary of St. Pope John Paul II.
According to the nunciature’s statement, Italian Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, archbishop emeritus of Genoa, visited Poland from June 17-26, 2021, to carry out an investigation on behalf of the Holy See.
Dziwisz, in his own statement on April 22, said he is “grateful to the Apostolic See for having judged the case fairly.”

Divine Mercy Sunday 2022: Here's how to obtain a plenary indulgence
By Joe Bukuras
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Apr 21, 2022 / 16:07 pm
What do a certain Polish nun and a certain Polish pope have in common? They both became saints and they were both instrumental in the institution of Divine Mercy Sunday, which offers many graces to the faithful
.
Be sure to thank St. John Paul II and St. Maria Faustina Kowalska this April 24 because as Divine Mercy Sunday rolls around again this year, the faithful have the opportunity to take refuge in the depths of Christ's mercy by receiving either a plenary or partial indulgence.
Some facts about Divine Mercy Sunday, including the Church’s guidance on how to receive indulgences on the day, can be read below:
What is Divine Mercy Sunday?
Divine Mercy Sunday is the Sunday after Easter each year. Divine Mercy Sunday was first announced in an April 2000 homily given by John Paul II for the Mass celebrating the canonization of Maria Faustina Kowalska.
St. Faustina is a Polish nun who received prophetic messages from Christ. These messages included revelations about the infinite mercy of God – coined the “Divine Mercy” – and her obligation to spread the message to the world, as recorded in her diary, “Divine Mercy in my soul.”
The late pope said in his homily that “the light of divine mercy, which the Lord in a way wished to return to the world through Sr Faustina's charism, will illumine the way for the men and women of the third millennium.”
John Paul II granted plenary and partial indulgences to the faithful who observed certain pious practices on Divine Mercy Sunday each year in a June 2002 decree. He did this in order to inspire the faithful in devotion to the Divine Mercy.

Easter isn't over yet. Here's when it officially ends
By Katie Yoder
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Apr 21, 2022 / 17:00 pm
Catholics recognize Easter — when Christ rises from the dead after sacrificing his life for all of humanity — as the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. But, as it turns out, they can continue saying “Happy Easter” into June
.
Easter lasts for a total of 50 days, from Easter Sunday until the feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit comes upon the apostles, Mary, and the first followers of Christ.
This year, 2022, Easter runs from April 17 until June 5.
