No worries Nana, glad he got the death penalty. That is one SOB that deserves to die tonight.

I will post here...I did not post it there because I was waiting for someone to say "ok",post it here. lol
I wrote and asked her what she had to go thru...here is what she said;
Hi Aunt Mandy,
It was a pretty complicated and timely process.***** & I actually legally got married (on paper) while I was here on a 3 month visitors visa to avoid me having to go back to Australia until our wedding. I applied once we did that b/c it was the least complicated and expensive way to do it.... although is was still complicated & expensive! There was just a bunch of applications to submit and time to wait for them to be processed. I had to go in for several interviews and keep evidence that our marriage was legit. I think it ended up costing a couple of grand. I had to have a doctors exam. It took me almost a year just to get a work permit, while my application was processing, although that was longer than normal because they accidentally lost my paperwork at one stage.
Hope that helps! You can also visit the immigration website, it's uscis.gov.
Love,

Thanks! I find it intriguing and admire what you went through! I presume it is not over yet? Would it bother you if I shared this with some friends? Just a personal perspective type of thing and you were a great help!
and
Yes, that is fine, tell whoever you like. I now have a 10 year Green Card, I'm a permanent resident/or legal alien. I'm eligible to apply for citizenship now if I like but I'm not really rushing to do that.. it costs money & you have to take a test (that many say most Americans would fail). I may do it before my 10 years is up otherwise I just get my green card renewed.
Glad I could help

Thanks Nana29. I thought from the first that he came as a visitor and just stayed. I know when we immigrated it cost money that these people didn't have and we had to have a verified job or prove cash assets to live on. I wish ICE would pick him up and hold him for trial on his existing charges.

Thanks Nana for posting the email and the info. I know there is all kinds of fees and stuff to get a green card. My coach couldn't leave the US until her work visa was straightened out and I think all total minus the attorney, she spent up to $5,000 just to get the visa fixed.

Yes, indeed.
My Canadian husband had to provide a "sponsor" even after we were married here, who would be financially responsible for him until he finished 40 quarters of employment (
10 years
) or until he became a US citizen. And he had to wait 3 years, IIRC to be eligible to become a US citizen.
Because I was not working at the time, I could not sponsor him, although I had a bundle in the bank (from an inheritance.) So a friend of ours chose to sponsor him.
I cannot imagine how Adam got sponsored, unless it was his boss who sponsored him, and I have my doubts as to whether that happened.
Information about sponsoring an immigrant here:

Thanks, I will pass on the info.
Until Zahra I never thought about what might have been involved for her(and one of her two sisters).
I have 2 bros in WA, they have boys who married sisters from OZ, thus, cousins and Brothers in law! They also have a 3rd sister who married a friend, also considered part of the fam. The oldest sis(as I find out) has triple citizenship...Aussie mom, Canadian Dad, born in CA!
I don't know how they did it. BTW...Oldest nephew and #1 been married 10 years in Dec, 2nd nephew and #2, was 5 years in July(and expecting miracle #2), #3 and hubby just had their 4th anniversary last week.

Thanks Brandi. I still say he came as a visitor and never left. I don't see these scam artists going through the cost and paperwork needed to be here legally. I had to provide police statements from every place I had lived from the time of 16 yo on up. There were medical exams, financial statements, job verification, fingerprints (even FBI) and paperwork up the wazoo. Not to mention costs. Also had interviews. Don't see them bothering if they thought they could fly under the radar.

Over on Zahra's thread you mentioned an email from your Aussie niece. Could you post it here or tell me where it is posted. TIA
I will post here...I did not post it there because I was waiting for someone to say "ok",post it here. lol
I wrote and asked her what she had to go thru...here is what she said;
Hi Aunt Mandy,
It was a pretty complicated and timely process.***** & I actually legally got married (on paper) while I was here on a 3 month visitors visa to avoid me having to go back to Australia until our wedding.
Love,
***
ME;
I visited the site...wow! Beyond me!
http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis
Thanks Nana29.
I thought from the first that he came as a visitor and just stayed
. I know when we immigrated it cost money that these people didn't have and we had to have a verified job or prove cash assets to live on. I wish ICE would pick him up and hold him for trial on his existing charges.
I cannot imagine how Adam got sponsored
, unless it was his boss who sponsored him, and I have my doubts as to whether that happened.
Information about sponsoring an immigrant here:

Hi monkeys!
BBM
Overstaying his visitors visa would make absolute sense then...

Tell her you can download the questions and answers for the citizenship test. That's what I did and it's not tricky. The government site has this info plus FAQs etc. Tell her good luck.

To be here legally is an expensive and timely process.
Not easy.
Most people think that if an immigrant marries a US citizen, then they are here legally, etc.
It's just not like that at all.

Not to mention interviews.
We went to Norfolk (the closest Immigration office) at east 4 times for interviews. Yes, fingerprints for hubby too, and of course they checked criminal records. Interpol, as I recall.
It simply was not easy, cheap or quick to do it legally. Took years, not months.
