Pope Francis greets the officers and new recruits of the Pontifical Swiss Guards on the day of the swearing-in ceremony, and encourages them to cultivate human relationships and community life in their service.

Pope Francis received in audience the Swiss Guards on Monday as they prepare for the traditional swearing-in ceremony of the new recruits which takes place every year on May 6.

The day marks the anniversary of the heroic sacrifice of 147 Swiss Guards who died while defending Pope Clement VII during the Sack of Rome in 1527 by the landsknechts, the German mercenaries of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.

Pope: With His Ascension Jesus leads our way to Heaven
12 May 2024, 12:07

Addressing the crowds gathered in Saint Peter's Square for the Regina Caeli prayer on Ascension Sunday, Pope Francis recalls how Jesus' return to the Father opens the way to Heaven for us.
By Lisa Zengarini

At the Regina Caeli prayer from the Apostolic Library this Sunday, marking the Ascension of the Lord in Italy and many other countries around the world, Pope Francis reflected on the meaning for us of Jesus rising into Heaven and sitting at the right hand of God (Mk 16:19).

The Pope explained that Christ’s ascension opens the way for us.  “Jesus' return to the Father appears to us not as a separation, but rather as an anticipation of our final destination,” he said.   As a “climbing partner” when we climb towards the summit of a mountain, He drags the Church, His body, to Heaven where he has ascended.

Pope Francis: ‘Knowledge must be inclusive’
13 May 2024, 12:35

Meeting with students at a number of Vatican institutions, Pope Francis warns against the “toxic, unhealthy and violent” information that can lurk in social media.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis received in audience on Monday some 200 students and teachers of the Vatican School of Paleography, Diplomatic and Archival Studies and of the Vatican School of Library Science as they celebrate their 140th and 90th anniversary of foundation, respectively.

Welcoming them in the Clementine Hall, the Pope expressed his gratitude to the two reputed higher education institutions, and underscored the importance of their work of forming people who "do accurate research in all circumstances to reach the truth”. “Yours is truly a service to solidity of the teachings you have received, a much-need solidity in times when news is sometimes spread without checks and research,” he said.

‘A Jubilee grace’: Vatican announces Holy Year Indulgence
13 May 2024, 12:34

Following the solemn indiction of the Jubilee 2025 by Pope Francis last week, the Apostolic Penitentiary has published a Decree that provides the details for the Indulgences that will be granted during the Holy Year.
By Christopher Wells

The Catholic faithful will have multiple ways to gain the Jubilee Indulgence for the 2025 Holy Year, according to a new decree promulgated by the Apostolic Penitentiary – the Vatican Office with overall responsibility for the granting and use of indulgences.

In the wake of the Second Vatican Council, Pope St Paul VI taught, “An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints.” Indulgences are plenary (full) or partial depending on whether they remove all or part of the temporal punishment due to sin.

For second time in a month, weapons detected at a papal event
By Crux Staff

ROME – Less than a month after a man on New York’s “most wanted” list was arrested in St. Peter’s Square with three knives ahead of a papal audience, a parish priest from the Czech Republic was detained Sunday before the pontiff’s Angelus address after being found to have an air gun, two knives, a box cutter and a screwdriver in his bag.

According to media reports, the 59-year-old priest, identified as Father Milan Palkovic, who was wearing a cassock, claimed the items didn’t belong to him but to another man attending the Angelus, who was also detained, and that they were for “personal defense.”

The two men reportedly were part of a group of pilgrims from the Czech Republic who had arrived in Rome by bus.

A police spokesperson said the items have been confiscated, and an investigation is underway to determine why the two men wanted to bring them into the pope’s Angelus address. One theory is that the other man, aged 60, whose name has not been revealed, may have passed the bag to Palkovic, believing that his priestly garb would allow him to pass undisturbed.

9 things to know and share about Fátima
By Jimmy Akin
National Catholic Register, May 13, 2024 / 14:09 pm

May 13 is the optional memorial of Our Lady of Fátima, arguably the most prominent approved apparition of the 20th century. It became famous the world over, particularly for its three-part “secret.”

Here are nine things to know about this Marian apparition.

1) What happened at Fátima, Portugal?

A young shepherd girl, Lucia dos Santos, said she experienced supernatural visitations as early as 1915, two years before the famous appearances of Our Lady of Fátima.

In 1917, she and two of her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, were working as shepherds tending their families’ flocks. On May 13, 1917, the three children saw an apparition of a lady from heaven. She told them, among other things, that she would return once a month for six months.

At her third appearance, on July 13, Lucia was shown the secret of Fátima. She reportedly turned pale and cried out with fear, calling Our Lady by name. There was a thunderclap, and the vision ended.

The children again saw the Virgin on Sept. 13.

In the sixth and final appearance, on Oct. 13, a dramatic outward sign was given to those gathered to witness the event. After the clouds of a rainstorm parted, numerous witnesses — some as far as 40 miles away — reported seeing the sun dance, spin, and send out colored rays of light.

Pope: The elderly are the 'firm foundation' of the future
14 May 2024, 14:03

In his Message for the Fourth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, which will take place on 28 July 2024, Pope Francis recognizes the situation of many elderly people today, and assures them: “God never abandons His children, never.”
By Sr. Francine-Marie Cooper, ISSM

“Do not cast me off in my old age” (cf. Ps 71:9): This sincere plea, taken from Psalm 71, is the theme of the Fourth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, which will take place on 28 July 2024.

Pope Francis chose the Theme for the Day, which is organised by the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.

In his Message for the Fourth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, Pope Francis reassured the addressees that “God never abandons His children, never.”

He referred to the elderly as “the firm foundation" on which “new” stones can rest, in order to join in erecting a spiritual edifice (cf. 1 Peter 2:5).”

Pope Francis meets elderly priests in a Roman parish
14 May 2024, 19:55

Pope Francis meets some 70 priests who have been ordained 40 years ago or more for a closed-door conversation at a Roman parish near the Vatican, and greets a group of primary school students and children attending catechism classes there.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

Pope Francis’ visit to the Roman parish of San Giuseppe al Trionfale, not far from Saint Peter’s Basilica, on Tuesday afternoon, began with a kiss on the head of little Rebecca, 2 years old, daughter of one of the parish catechists, when he hadn't even got out the car. Then, as he left his white Fiat 500L, he was greeted by the applause of the hundreds of people gathered in the churchyard of the basilica (or even looking out from windows and balconies) and hailing “Francesco! Francesco!"

The church founded by Don Luigi Guanella at the beginning of the 20th century and still run by the Guanellians (also known as Servants of Charity), was the setting of Pope Francis’ private meeting with some 70 priests who have been ordained 40 years ago or more.

What has the Vatican already said about discerning Marian apparitions?
By Courtney Mares
Rome Newsroom, May 14, 2024 / 13:52 pm

Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández will unveil guidelines for discerning Marian apparitions and other supernatural phenomena on Friday, but it is not the first time that the Vatican’s doctrine office has issued a directive for how the Church should respond to news of an alleged apparition.

Fifty years ago officials from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith identified how the emergence of mass media had created an environment in which news of an alleged apparition could spread rapidly and quickly draw larger crowds than in past centuries thanks to the ease of modern travel.

Officials from the congregation met to discuss problems that could come up in examining apparitions in November 1974 and agreed on a procedure for Church authorities to follow in the case of a reported apparition.

The Vatican’s doctrine office made these norms public with the approval of Pope Paul VI in 1978, just three years before Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was named the prefect of the congregation.

First, when a Church authority is informed of a new purported apparition or revelation, specific criteria should be used to judge whether or not cult or devotion should be allowed.

Criteria that would lead to a negative judgment on the alleged apparition included:

Pope Francis blesses the "Voice of the Unborn" bell, which will be taken to Kazakhstan, and will serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting human life from conception to natural death.
By Fr. Paweł Rytel-Andrianik & Fr. Jakub Nagi

"The Holy Spirit always raises us to a higher level of selfless and practical love towards the poor, the sick and the vulnerable, such as conceived children."

Pope Francis offered that reflection during his greetings to Polish pilgrims at the Wednesday General Audience.

He praised an initiative that will bring a bell called the “Voice of the Unborn” to Kazakhstan, saying it will “serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting human life from conception to natural death.”

Ahead of the General Audience, the Pope blessed the bell and rang it with two Polish children.

The initiative was promoted by the Yes to Life Foundation of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, based in Poland.

Pope at Audience: Charity is the work of the Holy Spirit in us
15 May 2024, 09:18

Pope Francis reflects on "charity" at his weekly General Audience, saying that the theological virtue "comes from God and is directed towards God, and enables us to love God... and to love our neighbour as God loves them."
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis turned his thoughts to the theological virtue of charity on Wednesday as he continued his series of catechesis on the vices and the virtues.

He began his reflection with the passage of St Paul: “So faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” The Holy Father noted that these words were addressed to the Christians of Corinth, who suffered from division and strife – even in the celebration of the Eucharist.

Pope: 'Peace is made with our hands not just by the powerful'
15 May 2024, 13:40

Pope Francis pens the preface of the book "Justice and peace will embrace", a collection of reflections published ahead of his pastoral visit to the Italian city of Verona, in which he reaffirms that we are all called to be artisans of peace in our daily life.
By Salvatore Cernuzio and Lisa Zengarini

“Peace is made with our hands”. It is not only built by the powerful "with their choices and their international treaties,” we too can build peace, "in our homes, in the family, among neighbours, in our workplaces, in the neighbourhoods where we live".

Pope Francis offered that reminder in the preface to a new book collecting texts and reflections on the relationship between justice and peace.

Titled “La pace e la giustizia si baceranno” ("Justice and peace will embrace "), the book, was released on Wednesday by the Vatican Publishing House LEV and L'Arena, ahead of his pastoral visit to the  northern Italian city of Verona , on May 18 , which will have justice and peace as its focus.

Global experts and leaders convene for Vatican climate summit
15 May 2024, 15:16

Scientists, regional and local leaders, and experts from universities around the world meet in the Vatican for a Summit entitled, "From Climate Crisis to Climate Resilience," promoted by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.
By Thaddeus Jones

Experts and leaders from around the world are meeting at the Vatican for a Summit looking at the climate crisis affecting the planet with a special focus on how to effectively manage and deal with it. The Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences are hosting the three-day Summit entitled, "From Climate Crisis to Climate Resilience."

Sharing ideas and solutions

The meeting from 15 to 17 May brings together experts in the field of climate change together with city mayors and regional government leaders who are dealing with its effects. They come from the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Researchers from universities around the world are also participating. All are contributing their own presentations in the meeting sessions taking place inside Vatican City.

Respecting the dignity of human life

In his Apostolic Exhortation, Laudate Deum, Pope Francis, underscored the dangers the world faces due to the impact of climate change, affecting the most vulnerable people especially, as well as the urgent need to work together to address the crisis.

“This is a global social issue and one intimately related to the dignity of human life. The Bishops of the United States have expressed very well this social meaning of our concern about climate change, which goes beyond a merely ecological approach, because 'our care for one another and our care for the earth are intimately bound together.'”
