Steve Jobs, Apple founder, dies
By Brandon Griggs, CNN
updated 8:11 PM EST, Wed October 5, 2011
(CNN)
-- Steve Jobs, the visionary in the black turtleneck who co-founded Apple in a Silicon Valley garage, built it into the world's leading tech company and led a mobile-computing revolution with wildly popular devices such as the iPhone, died Wednesday. He was 56.
The hard-driving executive pioneered the concept of the personal computer and of navigating them by clicking onscreen images with a mouse. In more recent years, he introduced the iPod portable music player, the iPhone and the iPad tablet -- all of which changed how we consume content in the digital age.
More than one pundit, praising Jobs' ability to transform entire industries with his inventions, called him a modern-day Leonardo Da Vinci.
"Steve Jobs is one of the great innovators in the history of modern capitalism," New York Times columnist Joe Nocera said in August. "His intuition has been phenomenal over the years."

He Died 'Peacefully'
Steve Jobs "died peacefully today surrounded by his family" .... the Apple mogul's family said in a statement.
The family said, "In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family."
"We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories."
The statement concludes, "We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief."

Tim Cook's Memo to Apple Employees on Passing of Steve Jobs
October 5, 2011
Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs died Wednesday at the age of 56. Jobs' successor, Tim Cook, delivered the somber news in an email to Apple employees, calling Jobs a "visionary and creative genius."
Here's the full text of the note:
Team,
I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.
Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.
We are planning a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon. If you would like to share your thoughts, memories and condolences in the interim, you can simply email
rememberingsteve@apple.com
.
No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.
Tim

5 cool things Jobs left us that weren't gadgets
October 6, 2011
If all Steve Jobs was was the sum of his iPods, iPads and iPhones, then that'd be a lot.
But the legacy of the Apple co-founder, who died Wednesday at age 56, goes beyond innovative gadgets and computers.
Here are five other pop-culture gifts he gave us:
::snipping2::
5. A Meditation on Mortality; an Action Plan for Life: "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life," Jobs said in his 2005 Stanford commencement address. "Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition."

Google Celebrates Steve Jobs With Homepage Link, Exec Tributes
October 6, 2011
Apple and Google have had a complex relationship over the years, competing primarily in the mobile OS space with iOS and Android. But when Apple co-founder Steve Jobs passed away yesterday, Google put differences aside and added a direct link to Apple's tribute on the Google.com homepage.
Beneath its search bar, Google posted: "Steve Jobs 1955-2011," which links directly to Apple.com.
"We're very sad to hear the news of Steve Jobs' passing," Google said on its official Twitter account last night, while co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin offered their own thoughts via Google+.
"I am very, very sad to hear the news about Steve. He was a great man with incredible achievements and amazing brilliance," Page wrote. "He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me."

Why We Mourn Steve Jobs
October 5, 2011
It is a strange thing to mourn the death of the chairman of one the most profitable companies in the world. But we do.
Steve Jobs believed in more for everyone: more money for him and his shareholders, more power through personal technology for the people. He was the white wizard in the black turtleneck holding the forces of decline at bay. Apple enjoyed one of the greatest runs in the history of industry right into and through the teeth of the worst economic times since the Great Depression. Steve Jobs was hope backed by manufacturing and an empowering outlook on life, a child of the grooviness and bigthink of the 1970s married to the drive of the 1980s.
So, as Occupy Wall Streeters and Tea Partiers cry in outrage that the American system is crumbling under corporate influence, many sympathetic to their causes pause and note the passing of a businessman.
Jobs created objects of prestige that induced envy because they could change your everyday life. But then, like Henry Ford before him, Jobs quickly pushed those objects down the socioeconomic pyramid. What was once only for the rich would be for everyone. Just wait. The great forces of technology and industry were working to make it so! It is appropriate that a version of his defining invention, the iPhone, will be free (with a contract) soon.
::snipping2::
We mourn his death as if he were a beloved state leader precisely because he embodied some glorious piece of what it is to be American with all our contradictions. He was an exception to nearly every rule, went off nearly every chart, overrode any sense of purpose but his own. We could not have a society filled with Steve Jobses, yet we could all want to be Steve Jobs (even and especially people who are not American). But for most of us, the occasional glimpse of our better selves in the reflection of an iPad is enough.
Nothing was never enough for Steve Jobs. (One more thing.)
Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true. -- Steve Jobs

Cyber criminal scams prey on Jobs' death already
'Chance to win MacBook Pro' more likely an invitation to a flood of spam email
October 6, 2011
Samantha Murphy / TechNewsDaily
New Yorkers place flowers, notes and apples outside the Apple store at Fifth Avenue to pay respect to Steve Jobs.
As millions around the world mourn the loss of Apple co-founder and visionary Steve Jobs, opportunistic online crooks have already begun to cook up schemes exploiting the tragedy for their own benefit.
One such scam, spotted by researcher Dmitri Bestuzhev from the security firm Kaspersky Lab, is a fake contest you can enter for the chance to win "1 of 15 MacBook Pros in memory of Steve Jobs!" Beneath the enticing offer is a space to enter your email address; while you won't win a new laptop, the chances of you winning a whole new batch of spam emails are high.
Another part of the scam Bestuzhev found was the chance to see exclusive photos and video footage from Steve Jobs' funeral. Below a header reading, "The Life, Death, and Legacy of Steve Jobs," the message says, "Video footage and images will be here uploaded live from the funeral ceremony. Check back each day to see if they are posted."
These scams are similar to one found spreading on Facebook Thursday claiming that 50 free iPads are being given away in memory of the former Apple chief executive officer. The messages come from an account named "R.I.P. Steve Jobs," according to the security firm Sophos, and redirect those who fall for the trick first to a survey page, and then to an online casino website.
For now, these scams don't appear to infect victims' computers with any malicious software, but that could quickly change.

Steve Jobs Funeral Is Friday, Sources Say
October 7, 2011
PALO ALTO, Calif. – The funeral for Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is taking place Friday, a person familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal.
The funeral will be a very private ceremony," Lt. Sandra Brown, a spokeswoman for the Palo Alto police department, told FoxNews.com. She believes it is being held outside of the city of Palo Alto, even though Jobs lived within the city limits.
The event comes two days after Jobs -- who invented ever-sleeker gadgets such as the iPod, iPhone, and iPad that transformed everyday technology -- died at age 56. Jobs passed away Oct. 5 after battling an undisclosed illness.
He previously underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer and had a liver transplant.
There is no public memorial planned for Jobs' death, said an Apple spokesman.
In a letter to Apple's employees on Wednesday, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said that the company is "planning a celebration of Steve's extraordinary life" for staff that will take place soon.

Steve Jobs at the heavenly gates - there's an app for that
October 8, 2011
With the passing of Steve Jobs comes some humor. The Oct. 17 New Yorker cover shows him at the gates of heaven, getting checked in by St. Peter with an iPad.
The New Yorker also published online a slide show of Apple cartoons from years past.

The cartoon below, found on cartoonist Pailheads Facebook page, was also posted near Jobs' home at the Apple store in Palo Alto, CA.

What a loss of an extraordinary, innovative mind. He will be missed. My prayers go out to his family.
He said some great things in a commencement speech he gave in 2005. This quote here is my favorite:
When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself:
"If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?"
And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
What a great credo to live one's life by.

It's a shame that with all that money, he couldn't buy good health.

Steve Jobs Memorial Service To Be Held Oct. 16
October 14, 2011
Apple Inc. has invited some of Silicon Valley's biggest names to a memorial service for Steve Jobs Sunday, Oct. 16, according to a copy of the invitation and several invitees.
The event will be held at Stanford University's campus Sunday evening, according to the invitation. It follows a small private funeral held for the Apple co-founder last week.
The memorial is expected to be attended by Silicon Valley luminaries and others close to Mr. Jobs, said the invitees.
An Apple spokesman said the Sunday event is a private service.

As previously reported, Apple also plans to host an event for Apple employees to celebrate Mr. Jobs's life at its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., on Oct. 19.

What a nice man and creative genius the world is now missing.
I think about his accomplishments..and so man others in the technology fields today ..and I am speechless. Where do these dreative ideas and genius to come from to even think of the techology that he did..and it's applications ..and then sitting down and making it work..then the fact that it develops so quickly..that it outdates itself with months and years is such a precedent..truly remarkable..and truly genius
