Police say Thomas Whaley (right) abducted Ranaldo Brown, 5, in Mount Vernon Sunday.

Officials issued an Amber Alert this morning, one day after a career criminal abducted a 5-year-old boy in Westchester County, police said.

Ranaldo Brown was abducted at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday on West 3rd Street in Mount Vernon.

Police say his abductor, Thomas Whaley, 49, used to date the boy's mother -- but he and the child are not related.

Officials think Whaley and the boy could possibly be headed for New York City.

Ex-Con Accused of Snatching 5-Year-Old Boy, Amber Alert Issued
Authorities issued an amber alert for the child early Monday

July 2, 2012

Police are searching for the career criminal who allegedly abducted his ex-girlfriend's 5-year-old son in Westchester County.

Authorities issued an amber alert for the child early Monday after Thomas Whaley, 49, allegedly picked him up from his grandfather's house in Mount Vernon Sunday morning without authorization.

Whaley, who police say has an extensive criminal history, has no relation to the boy. He is the former boyfriend of the child's mother, who had a restraining order against him. The boy's grandfather did not know about the restraining order and allowed Whaley to take the child, police said.

Police say Whaley was last seen on foot, possibly heading for New York City. Police say he frequents the Bronx and investigators are pursuing leads in the borough. He has no known vehicle and uses public transportation.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or Mount Vernon police at 866-NYS-Amber.

Amber Alert Issued For 5-Year-Old Mount Vernon Boy
July 2, 2012

Police said the boy was taken by 49-year-old Thomas Whaley, who is not related to the 5-year-old, according to police.

Brown was at his grandfather’s house when Whaley came by to take him out around 7:30 a.m. Sunday to visit friends in the Bronx, police said.

“The child was with other family members who were unaware of the status of the relationship and the suspect used deceit to take him,” said Gary Kelly, senior investigator with the New York State Police.

The grandfather allowed the boy to leave, police said. Whaley said they’d be back in an hour, but never returned.

The boy’s mom called Whaley around 6 p.m. Sunday, but he hung up on her, police said.

The suspect has an extensive criminal record, including violent and weapons offenses, police said.

Anyone with information should call 911 or Mount Vernon police at 866-NYS-Amber.

This is an AMBER Alert Cancellation. The Mount Vernon Police is cancelling the AMBER Alert that was activated at 9:14 AM on 7/2/2012 regarding Ranaldo Brown.

Sure wish there was a reason as to why.

Officials Say Details Of 5-Year-Old Mount Vernon Boy’s Disappearance ‘Shaky’
July 2, 2012 12:00 PM

Ranaldo Brown is back home after being missing for more than 24 hours. The 5-year-old’s mother told police her son had been taken by her ex-boyfriend, 49-year-old Thomas Whaley, early Sunday morning.

Several hours later, Whaley called to say he and the boy were in the Morrisania section of the Bronx where he lives. The boy was picked up by police and Whaley was placed into custody.

But Bell said the child seemed very close to Whaley and didn’t want to leave when investigators arrived.

“It would seem from the relationship that they have, that he’s played a major part in the young boy’s life,” Bell said. “He was emotional when they were separated.”

I'm glad Ranaldo has been located and he's safe.  I hope there's more investigation on what's going on in his home and his surroundings.

Moving this on over to "Missing Found Safe".

I agree Muffy.  Sounds like there is more to this story.
