I found it very interesting when the judge brought it to the attention of everyone that he had a girlfriend without a violent relationship so that goes to show he made a conscious decision to mistreat these three women.

Ohio man gets life term in kidnapping of 3 women

CLEVELAND (AP) -- The man convicted of holding three women captive in a house he turned into a prison and raping them repeatedly for a decade was sentenced Thursday to life without parole plus 1,000 years.
Ariel Castro, 53, apologized to his victims in a rambling, defiant statement before he was sentenced. He blamed a sex addiction, his former wife and even the FBI for not thoroughly investigating the abductions while claiming most of the sex was consensual and that the women were never tortured.
"These people are trying to paint me as a monster," he said. "I'm not a monster. I'm sick."
Just before the sentencing, one of three women he kidnapped stood within feet of Castro and told him his life was over.
"You took 11 years of my life away and I have got it back," said Michelle Knight. "I spent 11 years in hell. Now your hell is just beginning."
 
Judge Michael Russo dismissed Castro's claims that the women lived a happy life with him.
"I'm not sure there's anyone in America that would agree with you," he said.
Castro pleaded guilty last week to 937 counts including aggravated murder, kidnapping, rape and assault. A deal struck with prosecutors Friday spared him from a possible death sentence for beating and starving a pregnant victim until she miscarried.
The judge told Castro that there was no place in the world for people who enslave others. "These women never gave up hope," Russo said. "In fact, they prevailed."
As Castro was led away, Knight watched, smiling.
Thursday's hearing gave prosecutors a chance to detail some of Castro's assaults and law enforcement a chance to describe the jury-rigged prison he built in his ramshackle home.
FBI agent Andrew Burke said Castro created a makeshift alarm system and chained the women inside bolted bedrooms.
Bedroom windows were boarded shut from the inside with heavy closet doors and doorknobs had been removed and replaced with multiple locks, he said. The house was divided in ways to make it more secure and to hide the existence of rooms, he said.
Burke also testified that Castro would occasionally pay his victims after raping them. But he then would require them to pay him if they wanted something special from the store.
 
Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Detective Dave Jacobs said he talked with Castro a few days after the women escaped and that Castro said, "I knew what I did was wrong."
A police officer who helped rescue the women said one was reluctant to come out of her room even when she saw the officers. They were scared even after they were taken out of the house and quickly began sharing details about the horrors they went through, saying that they had been starved and beaten.
"They were just shouting out a lot of things," said Cleveland police officer Barb Johnson. She described the women as thin, pale and scared.

CLEVELAND A fund to help three Cleveland women who were held captive in a house for over a decade has now raised more than $1.3 million.
Organizers of the Cleveland Courage Fund said Friday that close to $20,000 has been donated since Thursday's sentencing of the man who admitted kidnapping and raping the women.

Castro victim returns to Cleveland neighborhood

CLEVELAND (AP) — Residents of the Cleveland neighborhood where three women were held captive for a decade say one of the women visited the neighborhood and expressed her wish that a park and a statue of an angel replace the home where Ariel Castro beat and raped them.
WEWS television station (http://bit.ly/1ehhTi5) reports that 32-year-old Michelle Knight thanked neighbors for their support and smiled and took pictures with well-wishers on Friday, a day after she spoke in court at Castro's sentencing.
 
His house, a drive-by attraction, has been fenced off and under police guard since the women escaped in May. It will be demolished.

The electricity was turned off at Ariel Castro’s home on Seymour Avenue on Monday after his family and friends removed personal items from it, including photographs and musical instruments.
The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer ) reports that the Cuyahoga (KY-uh-HOH’-guh) Land Bank acquired the home last week and plans to demolish it beginning Wednesday.
A contractor is tearing down the home at no cost. Plans for what will replace the house on the site haven’t been made public.

CLEVELAND Demolition has begun on the Cleveland house where three women were held captive and raped over a decade.
The house is being torn down as part of a deal that spared Ariel Castro a possible death sentence. He was sentenced last week to life in prison plus 1,000 years.

One of the women imprisoned there, Michelle Knight, showed up early Wednesday before the demolition began. She made a brief statement and released some balloons.

Family members of another victim, Gina DeJesus, watched from across the street as workers started demolishing the house. While DeJesus wasn't at the demolition, one of her aunts, Peggy Arida, was in the cab of the equipment that first struck the house.

"It just felt great, knowing that it's coming down," Arida told CBS Cleveland affiliate WOIO-TV.
 

Prosecutors say Castro cried when he signed over the house deed and mentioned his "many happy memories" there with the women. The women escaped May 6 when one of them broke part of a door and yelled for help.

Google Earth has already blurred out a satellite image of the house, before the demolition even began.

The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer on Tuesday reported that the Cuyahoga Land Bank expects to complete the demolition of Ariel Castro's house in one day and shred all the building materials.

The land bank acquired Castro's home on Seymour Avenue last week, and the house's electricity was turned off on Monday after his family and friends removed personal items from it, including photographs and musical instruments.

Plans for what will replace the house on the site haven't been made public.

The land bank's president, Gus Frangos, told the newspaper that the organization is trying to keep away scavengers who might try to sell the rubble as what is known as "murderabilia."

In 2011, a website that sells items related to high-profile crimes put on sale 1-gram packages of soil from the home of Cleveland serial killer Anthony Sowell before a city agency razed the house.

Sowell was convicted that year of killing 11 women and was sentenced to death. His case is under appeal.

In less than one hour, Ariel Castro's Seymour Avenue house was reduced to a pile of rubble.

As the last part of the house fell to the ground, a church on the corner of Seymour rang its bells to mark the demolition and healing for the survivors.
 
Family members say the women hope "the monster" was watching the demolition of his house in prison.

Survivor Michelle Knight came to watch the demolition in person.
