Pope at Mass: Pope praises heroism of nurses
12 May 2020, 08:07
On Tuesday, International Nurses Day, Pope Francis invites us to pray for nurses. During his homily, Pope Francis notes the difference between the peace the world gives and the peace that Jesus gives.
By Christopher Wells
Pope Francis prayed especially for nurses during his daily Mass at Casa Santa Marta on Tuesday morning. More than just a profession, he said, it is a vocation. He acknowledged that nursing is a calling that, especially in this time of pandemic, is marked by heroism – even to the point of giving one’s life.
Worldly peace and the peace of Christ
In his homily, Pope Francis reflected on Jesus's words from the Gospel of St John: “Peace I leave you; my peace I give you” (Jn 14:27).
This peace is not “universal peace”, the peace that comes from the absence of war, the Pope said. Rather it is “peace in the heart, peace in our souls, the peace we all have within”.

Pope: Nurses are the guardians of life
12 May 2020, 12:04
Pope Francis celebrates International Nurses Day on 12 May, noting that through the tragedy of coronavirus we have rediscovered their fundamental role, one that makes them “the guardians of life”.
By Francesca Merlo
Pope Francis opened his Message for International Nurses Day by noting that due to the global health emergency in which we find ourselves, “we have rediscovered the fundamental importance of the role being played by nurses and midwives”.
Those who put others first
He said each day, as we face this critical time, we witness the courage and sacrifices made by healthcare workers and by “nurses in particular”. They dedicate themselves, “to the point of putting their own health at risk”, he said, adding that, sadly, this has been demonstrated through the high number of healthcare workers who have died “as a result of their faithful service”. “I pray for them”, said the Pope, “and for all the victims of this epidemic”. “The Lord knows each of them by name”.

Pope to celebrate Mass for JPII centenary on 18 May, cease live-broadcast of daily Mass
12 May 2020, 18:13
Editorial
On Monday, 18 May, Pope Francis will celebrate Mass at the tomb of Pope St. John Paul II for the 100th anniversary of his birth. As of that date, the Pope will no longer live-stream his daily Mass in the Casa Santa Marta.
By Andrea Tornielli
Pope Francis’s morning Mass on Monday, 18 May, will be the last in a series that has daily accompanied millions of people around the world for more than two months.
Public Masses in Italy are being allowed to resume that same day. On that occasion, the Pope has decided to interrupt the live broadcast of his morning Mass.
The last Mass will be a special one, because 18 May also marks the 100th anniversary of Karol Wojtyla’s birth. Pope Francis will celebrate Mass at the altar over the tomb of his predecessor.
Pope St. John Paul II was born in 1920, elected Bishop of Rome in 1978, died in 2005, and canonized in 2014.

Pope at Mass: Mutual remaining in Jesus
13 May 2020, 08:37
At Mass at the Casa Santa Marta on Wednesday, Pope Francis prays for students and teachers. During his homily he also emphasizes that Christian life means "remaining" in Jesus.
By Vatican News
Pope Francis presided over Mass at the Casa Santa Marta on the Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Easter. It is also the day the Church celebrates the memorial of Our Lady of Fatima. At the beginning of the celebration he turned his thoughts to students and teachers:
“We pray today for students, the boys and girls who study, and for their teachers who need to find new ways to continue educating. May the Lord help them on this path and grant them courage and success.”
In his homily, the Pope commented on Wednesday’s Gospel (Jn 15:1-8) in which Jesus says to his disciples: "I am the true vine and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit.”

Pope at Audience: Christian prayer is intimate, trusting, confident
13 May 2020, 10:19
Pope Francis reflects on the essential characteristics of prayer in his catechesis at the weekly General Audience, and says prayer is universal, intimate, and entirely trusting in God.
By Devin Watkins
At the Wednesday General Audience, Pope Francis considered several of the core aspects of prayer.
He said prayer is common to all people, no matter what their religion, and “probably even to those who profess no religion.”
The Pope recently demonstrated the universality of prayer. He has invited people of all religions to take part in a day of prayer on Thursday, 14 May, to implore God for an end to the coronavirus pandemic. The initiative is promoted by the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity.
Flows from heart
In his catechesis, Pope Francis said prayer involves the most intimate mystery of our being. Christian writers have always said prayer is “born within the secrecy of our beings, in that interior place called the ‘heart’.”
Our emotions, intelligence, and body all participate in prayer, though prayer cannot be identified with any one aspect of our being. “Every part of the human person prays,” he said.

Pope at Mass: Pray together for healing from all pandemics
14 May 2020, 08:26
Pope Francis celebrates Mass on Thursday for the Day of Prayer Against the Pandemic, and reminds us that we are all brothers and sisters, no matter our religious affiliation.
By Devin Watkins
At the start of Mass in the Casa Santa Marta on 14 May, Pope Francis encouraged people of all faiths to pray, fast, and perform works of charity for an end to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Today, the Higher Committee for Human Fraternity has called for a day of prayer and fasting to ask the merciful God for an end to this tragic moment of the pandemic. We are all brothers and sisters. St Francis of Assisi used to say: “All brothers and sisters”. And so, men and women of every religious confession are uniting themselves today in prayer and penance to ask for the grace of healing from this pandemic.”
Fear in the face of the pandemic
In his homily, Pope Francis reflected on the example of the prophet Jonah.
“The city of Nineveh was afflicted by some sort of pandemic – perhaps by a moral pandemic – and was about to be destroyed. God called Jonah to preach a message of prayer, penance, and fasting.”
He said Jonah was initially overcome by fear and so ran away from his mission. God called him again, and the prophet went to Nineveh to preach.
Pope Francis said people of all faiths and traditions are called to pray and fast together for delivery from the pandemic, as the people of Nineveh did in response to Jonah’s preaching.

‘Day of Prayer’ sees humanity united in the fight against Covid-19
14 May 2020, 15:59
The Day of Prayer for Humanity unfolds as more than 4.3 million people across the globe have now been infected with Covid-19 since an outbreak was first reported in China’s Hubei province late last year.
By Vatican News
More than 296,600 people have officially died from the infection, and experts have issued dramatic forecasts regarding the aftermath of the pandemic that has devastated economies and left millions without a job.
A vast chorus of diverse voices across the world has expressed its support and confirmed its participation in this unique 'Day of Prayer for Humanity'.
They are Christians and Muslims, Hindus and Jews, Jains, Buddhists, atheists and agnostics.
They are uniting – in the words of Pope Francis – “as brothers and sisters, to ask the Lord to save humanity from the pandemic, to enlighten scientists and to heal the sick”.
The call for this day of prayer came from the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity which was established last August a few months after Pope Francis's Apostolic Visit to the United Arab Emirates. He expressed his support for it during his Regina Coeli Address on 3 May, pointing out the universality of prayer.
“Remember”, he said, “on 14 May, all believers together, believers of different traditions, pray, fast, and perform works of charity” imploring the Lord to save humanity from the pandemic.
The Committee meanwhile has launched the hashtag #PrayForHumanity to help people feel united and religious leaders across the faith spectrum have organised events and reached out on social media.
Individuals and communities are doing their thing in many ways and the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue has been actively promoting the event.

Pope provides funding for scholarships in Lebanon
14 May 2020, 13:33
An extraordinary intervention by Pope Francis intends to support the education of young people in Lebanon, which has been hit by “a serious crisis that is causing suffering and poverty” and risks robbing future generations of hope.
By Vatican News
On Thursday, the Holy See Press Office announced that Pope Francis has sent a donation of USD 200,000 to support 400 scholarships in Lebanon.
The donation was made “in the hope of achieving a gesture of solidarity and with the desire that all involved at national and international levels will responsibly pursue the search for the common good, overcoming every division and partisan issue”.
In a communiqué announcing the gift, the Press Office notes that “Pope Francis with fatherly concern has continued to follow in recent months the situation of beloved Lebanon… that has always been an example of the coexistence and fraternity that the Document on Human Fraternity wished to offer to the whole world”.

A Saint and his family
14 May 2020, 12:30
Unshakable faith in the Lord, devotion to Mary, the spirit of sacrifice, the commitment to one’s neighbour, even at the risk of one’s own life. In his own family, Karol Wojtyła encountered all those characteristics that were then developed in his own life, and in an extraordinary way, in his Pontificate.
By Alessandro Gisotti
In his “service to the People of God, Saint John Paul II was the Pope of the family”. These words of Pope Francis during the canonization of Karol Wojtyła and Angelo Roncalli on April 27, 6 years ago, have a special meaning today as we approach the centenary of the birth of the holy Polish Pope. In fact, celebrating the beginning of his earthly life naturally leads us to want to “meet” his family, to try to discover the “secret” of his parents. Their cause for canonization began last week in Poland. Simply reading the basic biographical data of his mother, Emilia, and father, Karol, after whom he was named, one can understand how deeply their witness impacted the personality of the future Pope. Without a doubt, it can be said that the pillars of his priestly, and then pastoral, ministry first as the Archbishop of Krakow, and then as Bishop of Rome, were laid down in the early years of his life in Wadowice, a small town in the far south of Poland, where he was born on 18 May 1920.

At the start of Mass on Friday of the Fifth Week of Easter, Pope Francis turned his thoughts towards families.
“Today is the International Day of Families. Let us pray for families, that the Spirit of the Lord - the spirit of love, respect and freedom - may grow in families,” he said.
The early days of the Church
In his homily, Pope Francis remarked that, in the first reading (Acts 15: 22-31), the early days of the Church were filled with a mixture of peace, persecution and turmoil.
In times of peace, the Church grew and the word of God spread, he said. There were also persecutions beginning with Stephen and then Paul, who changed from being a persecutor to being persecuted. The primitive Church also had some turmoil like the situation in the first reading.
The newly converted Christians in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia had believed in Jesus, been baptized and received the Holy Spirit without an intermediary stage. However, there were some who felt that pagan converts first had to be initiated as Jews before becoming Christians, called judaizers. This disturbed the pagan converts and made them question their status. They felt they were second-class Christians.
For this reason, the Apostles wrote to the Church in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia. They acknowledged that some of their number had upset them with their teaching and disturbed their peace of mind without any mandate from the Apostles.
The danger of rigidity
Pope Francis reflected on the attitude of those early Christian preachers.
“Rigidity is not from the Spirit of God, it puts into question the gratuitousness of redemption and the resurrection of Christ,” said the Pope.

The Pope emeritus’ words on mercy in Saint John Paul II
15 May 2020, 11:30
Pope emeritus Benedict XVI sends a letter to the Bishops of Poland for the birth centenary of his predecessor, Pope St. John Paul II.
By Vatican News
"The whole of the Pope’s life was centered on subjectively assimilating the objective center of the Christian faith – the teaching of salvation – and allowing others to accept it.”
Pope emeritus Benedict XVI wrote those words in a letter for the centenary of the birth of Saint John Paul II.
"Thanks to the risen Christ, the mercy of God is for all", recalls the Pope emeritus. He adds that "everyone must know that the mercy of God will eventually prove stronger than our weakness".

Ahead of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Polish Pope, the archivist of the John Paul II Family Home Museum in Wadowice encourages everyone to discover it online.
By Vatican News
Karol J. Wojtyła, known as Pope Saint John Paul II, was born on 18 May 1920 in a modest apartment in Wadowice, a small city about fifty kilometres from Krakow, Poland. The Wojtyła family lived in this home from 1919 – 1938, when Karol was eighteen years old.
Today, that building on Kościelna Street is the John Paul II Family Home Museum, which attracts approximately 250,000 visitors annually. It was opened on 12 April 2010 by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Małopolska region, the Wadowice Township and the Archdiocese of Krakow.
The archivist encourages everyone to visit the Museum’s website where further information can be found.

Pope at Mass prays for those who bury the dead during pandemic
16 May 2020, 08:36
At Mass in the Casa Santa Marta on Saturday, Pope Francis urges prayers for those who bury the dead during the pandemic, and delivers a homily on the spirit of worldliness.
By Robin Gomes
Pope Francis celebrated Mass at the Casa Santa Marta on the Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter. At the start of Mass his thoughts turned to those who bury the dead during this pandemic.
“Let us pray today,” he said, “for people who bury the dead during the pandemic." "To bury the dead," he said, "is one of the works of mercy and, obviously, it is not something pleasant. Let us also pray for them because they also risk their lives and can be infected.”
Later, in his homily, the Pope commented on the day’s Gospel (Jn 15:18-21) where Jesus says to His disciples: “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you."

Pope at Mass: We have a Father, we are not orphans
17 May 2020, 08:50
Pope Francis celebrated the last Mass broadcast live from the Casa Santa Marta chapel on Sunday praying for trash collectors and reminding us that we are not orphans because we have a Father in heaven.
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp
“Today our prayer is for all those persons who clean hospitals, the streets, who empty dumpsters, who go to each house to remove trash”. This was Pope Francis’s intention for the Mass he celebrated for the Sixth Sunday of Easter in the chapel of Casa Santa Marta. He continued saying, “It’s a work that no one sees, but it is a job that is necessary to survive. May the Lord bless them and help them”.
He then reflected on the Sunday’s Gospel passage (John 14:15-21) and the Second Reading (1 Peter 3:15-18) during his homily.
Jesus bids farewell with a promise
Pope Francis began his homily saying that as Jesus bade farewell to His disciples, He left them hope. That hope was the promise that He would not leave them orphans. It is this sense of being orphaned, of not having a Father, that is, and has been, the root of many problems on earth, he said.
“We live in a society that lacks the Father. A sense of being orphaned touches one’s sense of belonging and fraternity”.

Pope at Regina Caeli: ' the Holy Spirit illuminates our steps''
17 May 2020, 12:05
Pope Francis’ catechesis on the Sixth Sunday of Easter is dedicated to the gratuitousness of God’s love and to the gift of the Holy Spirit.
By Vatican News
Pope Francis prayed the Regina Caeli on Sunday and addressed the faithful, linked via live-streaming, to the Vatican’s Apostolic Library, encouraging them to live the Gospel with joy in the knowledge they are sustained by the Holy Spirit who lights the way.
Taking his cue from the Gospel passage of the day (Jn 14:15-21), the Pope said it presents two fundamental messages: the observance of the commandments and the promise of the Holy Spirit.
In his words to the disciples, he said, Jesus links love for Him to the observance of the commandments, something he had insisted upon in His farewell discourse at the Last Supper when He said: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments”.

Raphael's last paintings unveiled: A discovery made during a Vatican Museums restoration
17 May 2020, 15:00
The Vatican Museums unveil the final paintings of the Renaissance master Raphael Sanzio, which were discovered during the restoration of the frescoes in the Vatican’s Hall of Constantine.
By Paolo Ondarza
The allegories of Justice (Latin: Iustitia) and Friendship (Comitas) likely represent the last work of Raphael before his death in 1520.
These two figures were painted in oil alongside the frescos in the Hall of Constantine in the Vatican.
The exceptional discovery is the result of a careful restoration begun in March 2015. Restoration work has so far been executed on three of walls of the great Hall, which measures 18 by 12 meters with a height of about 13 meters. The Hall of Constantine was destined by Pope Leo X (Medici) for meetings with representatives and diplomats.

.
By Devin Watkins
In a video message sent on Monday, Pope Francis urges the young people of Poland – and youth around the world – to let Christ enter every aspect of their lives.
His message came on the evening of 18 May, which marks 100 years since the birth of Karol Wojtyla, the future Pope Saint John Paul II.
“Saint John Paul II was a gift of God to the Church and to Poland, your motherland. His earthly pilgrimage,” said the Pope, “was marked by his passion for life and by a fascination with the mystery of God, of the world and of humankind.”
