Mar. 12, 2013 2:18 PM

Judge Steven Munsinger on Tuesday continued the plea hearing of 18-year-old Austin Sigg until April 12.

Sigg walked into court wearing an orange jumpsuit. He flashed a tight smile and talked with his attorneys before the hearing.

Police say Sigg previously confessed to killing Jessica Ridgeway.

About 10 people, including Jessica’s mother, were in the audience, all wearing purple, Jessica’s favorite color

Austin Sigg arraignment delayed for 30 days in kidnapping, death of Jessica Ridgeway

GOLDEN  — Attorneys for Austin Sigg successfully argued on Tuesday that before he can enter a plea, they need more time to plow through "massive" evidence compiled during the investigation of last fall's kidnapping and murder of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

But Jefferson County District Court Judge Stephen Munsinger granted Sigg's defense team only 30 additional days to enter a plea, not the two months they had sought. The judge set a new arraignment date of April 12.

 ::snipping2::

The defense also requested a private meeting with the judge, without prosecutors present. They alluded to possible evidence they wanted to discuss but didn't want prosecutors to be aware of. Munsinger instructed them to file a written request for that conference.

Boy organizes run in memory of Ridgeway; money raised to help find missing children
8:37 PM, Apr 6, 2013

KUSA - More than 100 people came out to "Run the Ridges" Saturday for a 5K race in memory of Jessica Ridgeway.

The run was made possible thanks to the efforts of a 9-year-old boy. It took Trevor Long just six months to organize the event.

Runners wore "Run the Ridges" shirts and purple ribbons-- Jessica's favorite color-- all in honor of the young girl who was kidnapped and killed in 2012.

The money raised benefits the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

I hope so, too, Kermit.  His arraignment is on April 12, and it might give us an idea if any useful information will be given by him.

Free child safety class offered to the public
Posted: Thursday, April 11, 2013 10:21 am

Javier Lozano Jr., owner of The Dojo of Karate in Westminster is offering a free child safety class. The third degree black belt and world champion hopes to empower the community after the loss of Jessica Ridgeway, the 10-year old girl kidnapped and killed last October in Westminster.

“What happened to Jessica really affected everybody,” he said. “I wanted to wait a while before I did anything, but now I really want to educate people to make the right decision those sorts of situations.”

The class is from 6:15-7 p.m. on April 19 at the Lozano’s studio, 12910 Zuni St. # 200. Lozano said the class is a great opportunity for children to gain knowledge in the importance of staying safe, being aware of their surroundings and learning very easy and effective self-defense skills.  Children will also learn safety tips when staying home alone.

“Some of the self-defense skills will be basic hits and punches,” he said. “But another focus will be how to prevent being bullied and teaching kids how to make the right decision when faced with a bullying situation or a dangerous situation.”

GOLDEN —  The teenager accused of killing and dismembering 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway last fall pleaded not guilty to all charges during a court hearing on Friday.

Austin Sigg, who turned 18 in jail, is charged with 18 counts related to Jessica's death, as well as an attack on a jogger at Ketner Lake last Memorial Day weekend. Four of the counts carry mandatory life sentences.

Sigg's attorneys reserved the right to change his plea. The judge set a Sept. 20 start date for Sigg's trial.

Austin Reed Sigg Enters Not Guilty Plea In Jessica Ridgeway Case
Posted: 04/12/2013 3:49 pm EDT  |  Updated: 04/12/2013 3:59 pm EDT

The teen who allegedly confessed to the killing and abduction of Colorado fifth-grader Jessica Ridgeway entered a plea of not guilty Friday.

Sigg is charged with murder, kidnapping, sexual assault and robbery. Prosecutors added three counts of sexual exploitation of a child because child pornography was allegedly found during the investigation. Sigg denied to investigators that he sexually assaulted Jessica.

Sigg also faces attempted an attempted kidnapping charge for the jogger attack.

Sigg's plea took many by surprise since just last month multiple media outlets reported that Sigg was expected to plead guilty to killing Jessica and attempting to kidnap a female jogger at Ketner Lake because he allegedly confessed to police and 911 dispatchers.

"I murdered Jessica Ridgeway, I have proof that I did," Sigg is heard saying on the recording. "I'm giving myself up completely, there will be no resistance whatsoever."

When the dispatcher asked Sigg if he'd committed any other crimes, he confessed to his attempt to kidnap the jogger.

"The only other (incident) was Ketner Lake, where a woman was attacked. That was me," Sigg said.

Jessica Ridgeway Update: Austin Sigg, Colo. teen charged in slaying of 10-year-old, pleads not guilty

By Crimesider Staff Topics Daily Blotter

(CBS/AP) GOLDEN, Colo. - Austin Sigg, a Colorado teen, pleaded not guilty Friday to murder and kidnapping in the slaying and dismemberment of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, in a crime that panicked Denver-area residents last fall - despite police testimony that the suspect confessed to the crime.

The 18-year-old Sigg stunned a courtroom by entering the not guilty pleas in the girl's death in the Denver suburb of Westminster. Sigg also pleaded not guilty to a May attack on a 22-year-old jogger at a lake in Jessica's neighborhood.

Sigg's not guilty pleas came despite his alleged confession and the discovery of some of the girl's remains at his home.

Jessica disappeared while walking to school on Oct. 5, 2012, leading parents to take extraordinary precautions to keep their children safe. Residents were encouraged to report suspicious behavior by neighbors.

If convicted, Sigg would face life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years. He cannot get the death penalty because he was 17 at the time of the slaying.

Sigg is charged with murder, kidnapping, sexual assault and robbery. Prosecutors added three counts of sexual exploitation of a child because child pornography was allegedly found during the investigation. Sigg denied to investigators that he sexually assaulted Jessica.

 ::snipping2::

A resident contacted authorities Oct. 19 to report Sigg because he reportedly had a fascination with death, Westminster police Detective Luis Lopez testified at a preliminary hearing. Two FBI agents took a DNA sample from Sigg. His mother called 911 on Oct. 23, saying he wanted to confess. Lopez said Sigg's DNA was found on Jessica's clothing.

Austin Sigg’s Ridgeway Murder Confession Will Be Closely Analyzed
April 13, 2013 3:49 PM

DENVER (CBS4) – The teenager who confessed to killing Jessica Ridgeway set the stage for a potential court battle.

Despite the confession, Austin Sigg, 18, pleaded not guilty to the 10-year-old’s murder.

After Friday’s plea of not guilty, the judge set a trial date for September, estimated to last three weeks, which means it will stretch on in to October — almost a year after Ridgeway was killed. But things could change later on if the district attorney decides to offer Sigg a plea deal.

During the preliminary hearing in February, a recorded conversation between Sigg and a police dispatcher was played in the courtroom. Sigg confessed saying, “I murdered Jessica Ridgeway. I have proof that I did it.”

“No matter how overwhelming the evidence may be, no matter where there have been confessions, everyone is entitled to plead not guilty,” CBS4 Legal Analyst Karen Steinhauser said.

Steinhauser said the confession itself will have to be closely analyzed.

“There may be some other issues that the defense wants to look at with regards to the nature of that confession, how it was made, to whom it was made,” she said.

Too much concrete evidence against Sigg.
I do hope there is a plea deal because I am hoping/praying that somehow we can learn how this kid went from pornography to
murder. And the plea deal better be life because if he has an opportunity to get out of prison, he will murder again. Whatever
went wrong has not been fixed.

Hearing for Colo teen Austin Sigg charged in Jessica Ridgeway's slaying, defense questions DNA evidence
4:54 PM, May 3, 2013

GOLDEN - Austin Sigg, the teenager accused of kidnapping, killing and dismembering 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, appeared in court Friday morning.

During the motions hearing, Sigg's defense team asked for documents from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation in regards to their testing of the DNA evidence against Sigg. The defense is questioning the reliability of the testing procedure. According to the defense from Oct. 23 to 26, 2012, three contamination memos from the CBI were sent in regards to the DNA samples.

Two of those memos had to do with the Ridgeway case. One had to do with the jogger who prosecutors believe Sigg also tried to kidnap. A contamination memo does not mean that contamination necessarily happened, however, it means that it could have happened.

The defense is also calling for the validation of the DNA samples and a review of the machines used to test the samples. According to the court, the last time the DNA machine was evaluated was 2010, however the CBI does daily maintenance and protocols every day.

During the motions hearing, the lab director for the Denver regional DNA testing facility talked about DNA analyzation and how a sample could get contaminated.

The judge decided the CBI should provide some of the documentation that the defense requested and enter it into the discovery group for both the prosecution and defense to read.

A new motions hearing was set for June 21 at 9 a.m.
