Gates: AP decision 'appalling'
Mike Allen Mike Allen   – Fri Sep 4, 10:38 am ET

Defense Secretary Robert Gates is objecting “in the strongest terms” to an Associated Press decision to transmit a photograph showing a mortally wounded 21-year-old Marine in his final moments of life, calling the decision “appalling” and a breach of “common decency.”

The AP reported that the Marine’s father had asked – in an interview and in a follow-up phone call — that the image, taken by an embedded photographer, not be published.

The AP reported in a story that it decided to make the image public anyway because it “conveys the grimness of war and the sacrifice of young men and women fighting it.”

Northern Rose -- I'm late by days with this, but wanted to thank you for your answer about the bread.   Going to buy me a machine this weekend & give it a try !   Thanks again !
BG

You are welcome.  I have a old Black & Decker. It has lasted without a problem doing at least one batch of dough every day, sometimes two a day if I am making cinnamon buns or something else I want to use it to do the work. One thing I forgot to tell you, use metal bread pans.  Glass ones just do not give you the same crust as metal ones, and grease them with lard before you put the dough in to rise. Lard works better than oil or that spray on stuff.  Do not get Teflon nonstick pans.  Teflon is very bad, does flake off in your food once the original surface gets scratched, is a well know carcinogen and has been documented to cause various types of chronic diseases as well as birth defects.  Teflon is as deadly as CFL bulbs and I have ranted about those many times.

You & I are very much on the same page about all this!  I threw out all my nonstick and aluminum stuff years ago; only use stainless steel, cast iron or glass pans to cook with.  And I don't buy spray on at all, only use bacon drippings or lard.

I'll have to buy bread pans cause I don't have any kind of those, glad you let me know about the glass ones not working as well - the crust is my favorite part of the bread !   mmmm, I can't wait for the smell while it's cooking, we used to live in a town with a bread factory when I was kid (just a few yrs ago  ) and the smell was always awesome.   Your house must smell wonderful!

JSM - hope you feel better soon.  I always hated having to go to work when I was sick.

One more post to Northern Rose please --   you mentioned cinnamon buns.  My mom didn't bake bread but one in a great while she made homemade cinnamon rolls.  And, when she did, she also made some kind of buns that instead of the cinnamon filling, had a chocolate filling.  But it wasn't gooey, it was a dry filling like for cinnamon ones.

All I can remember is that she always used Hershey's cocoa out of the tin to make them with.  Have you ever made those?  I would guess it was a mixture of cocoa & sugar, do you have any idea?

I have made those (or something similar) a long time ago when my older boys were little.  I am going to have to go through my recipe box to find the recipe for you.  I have my cinnamon bun recipe posted in the recipe forum with a picture.  Use the breadmaker to make the dough for you (always liquid first, dry goods, then yeast) .  They are really worth making and please never use margarine, butter it much better for you and the taste is much better.

Once you make white bread and feel more adventurous let me know, I have a lot of different bread recipes from rye, whole wheat, onion, cheese, even bagels.

JSM- I hope you take some time to get healthy.  Sending you some chicken soup as well with home made noodles.

Trimm and No Rose, went to the doctor, now I am back at work. I have been trying to catch up, but it has been an uphill battle. Thanks for worrying about me. I have antibiotics and cough medicine with codiene. I will be just fine as soon as I get home.
Can you make it a short day at work? Be careful with the codeine please  an angelic monkey
I am hoping to make it a short day, but I doubt it will happen. Thanks y'all for worrying.

I haven't caught up, is Tevye going home today? TIA JSM
JSM. I'm glad you went to the doctor and got meds. You're right, you'll feel better once you get home.

I AM HOME! I'm all tucked in my bed in my "new" room upstairs, watching my soaps and smoking lightly. I didn't go as crazy as I thought I would by not smoking at the hospital. They gave me the patch, and DH gave me some gum and I was just fine. That tells me that eventually, I will be able to quit.

Now I just have to wait for the pathology reports. The sentinal node was cancerous, so he took some more out to see what they had. I'll find out Tuesday. I'm ok with that. My biggest worry is lung cancer, because if I get that (which last week's xrays show no evidence of!! there will be no sympathy, no mercy, and no excuse. That will be my own darn fault...so I can skate on that guilt trip for now!

Oh, it's so good to be home! My sis is coming out later, she'll help me set up my room so it's more comfortable for computing. I'll get my homework done by Sunday, even the big paper that's due Wedsnesday. I told my husband I'm staying in bed till Monday, and he's ok with that. He's handling this very well, after a rough start. He's a good guy...but being a guy, doesn't handle fear and freak outs very well. But he's learning!

And tomorrow morning, I'm sending someone to BK for that darn sausage croissandwich! I only eat them about 4 times a year, so I think I'm due!

Now, JSM, YOU get plenty of rest. From what I understand, there was a doc dump...I''m gonna get all loaded up on drugs and then maybe I won't go postal when I read them. I suggest a little codiene and a litttle ML to make them go down easier for you!

hugs and thanks to all,
Tevye

Hello, sweet monkeys.  I have been very busy, I don't even have time to read back, so I am just going to say hello.  We are still waiting for my granddaughter, she is being shy......  I had my other two grandchildren yesterday, while mommy went do a doctor appointment she thought she would never have to keep.  Her actual due date was yesterday so she isn't really very late but her old scheduled C-section was for August 28, so it is feeling very late to us.  I think once again she made the right decision to go with the 2vbac.  They took my first granddaughter 2 weeks early and she had a lot of feeding problems.  This baby obviously wasn't due on August 28th and God knew better.  Even though I am not able to read as much right now.  My heart is always here with all of you.

Hugs, Magic

PS:  As I usually do, posting this in both Musings and JSM's thread, I want to make sure to say hello to everyone.  an angelic monkey

Tevye I was on my way out the door and am glad to see you are at home now. I'm glad your spirits are up. Don't worry about the smoking you will quit in your own time. I am off to the bank now and going to home to get some rest (i.e. looking at SM).

You take good care of yourself. I will see you in a bit. JSM

I hope JSM is o.k.
I've been wondering myself, maybe she took the day off to rest  an angelic monkey

I suggest a little codiene and a litttle ML to make them go down easier for you!

hugs and thanks to all,
Tevye

Glad you are home.I'm sure hubby is flying by the seat of his pants.Guys just don't handle stress very well. They don't know what to do when the woman gets sick.
Be sure and have the BK breakfast.     You deserve it. Don't push yourself too hard.Be sure and get some rest.   an angelic monkey

Hi Magic, I hope all goes well with the baby. Thanks for posting here too!  an angelic monkey

Tevye glad you are home and resting, rest up and let other's take care of the household duties.  an angelic monkey           JSM, you rest and get to feeling better.  an angelic monkey
Joe is at school for one more night. I actually am feeling much better than I was last night and this morning. I guess either the antibiotics are working or my magic cough syrup. Crazy doctor gave me a refill on it, I don't plan on being sick forever.
