Radar control on Aruba through Coastguard

THE HAGUE — The Coastguard is solely responsible for the radar control on Aruba. The police and the Aliens organization IASA will no longer intervene. Premier Mike Eman (AVP) announced this during a conclusive press conference today in The Hague. He had been in the Netherlands on a working visit this week.

The Minister-President’s statements have ended a many years’ standing conflict. For a long time now the Netherlands had preferred that the Coastguard would become solely responsible for that form of border patrol, but the former minister of Justice, Rudy Croes (MEP) had detained such. Even though it had been agreed earlier this year that IASA would only supervise the radar this year, the responsibility now lies with the Coastguard. Aruba disposes of three radars and one of these will be allocated to the Coastguard. “They will be taking over the lease-contract” according to Eman this morning. The other two will be at the disposal of the Kingdom. One is most likely for St. Maarten, with the assistance of the Netherlands. Eman, “It will not regard a substantial amount, but the compensation will yield towards the budget.”

A choice for the most logical solution has been made, according to the Premier. “The Coastguard has the expertise and the equipment to act when they observe something on the radar.”

Relation
Premier Eman looks back on an enervating first working visit. His visit had been essential to improve the relationship between both countries, which had reached a low point during the past months. “It is an open secret that both countries had been on bad terms with each other”, the Premier had stated this morning. “We believe in the Kingdom and will do our utmost to put this relationship back on the rails again. We will try not to act emotionally, but on a rational basis.”
He had also been received well, he said. “It had been some challenge. However, we had toasted together on Thursday and it can be considered as a huge success. We had already invested considerably as opposition in the relationship with the Netherlands and I realize the importance of that previous history. Our discussion partners would have viewed us differently without that background.”

Steppingstone
Eman repeated during the press conference that Aruba would gladly be a steppingstone for large Dutch companies such as Philips and Unilever. The South American market could easily be swept from Aruba. “We are familiar with the South American language and culture. We have our contacts” according to Eman. Apart from economical growth, this could also include another substantial advantage, namely bearing surface, according to the Premier. “One observes that the support of Kingdom-concept is diminishing within the Dutch society. This could change if large Dutch concerns would become more prominent.”

Eman had had no time for a trade mission this week. However, there had been a conversation with KLM, which airline company had terminated the regular service Aruba-Amsterdam last March after dozens of years. “We would gladly welcome the blue bird again”, the Premier had stated. “The departure of KLM had symbolized the pauperization in the relations.” Eman still hopes that the KLM will return in due course, even though the conversation had been ‘very conceptual’. “I think that KLM wants to realize more than merely resume scheduled flights in due course,” he stated optimistically. According to Eman, the ABC-Islands should become a hub for flights from and to the Caribbean region.

Eman had laughed aloud, when asked about his conversation with Queen Beatrix on Tuesday. He had chuckled, that “The coffee had been good”. “We have furthermore experienced in the Netherlands how one fares, once you mention a thing or two.” Eman referred to the Lower Chamber-member Arend Jan Boekestijn of the VVD, who had blown the whistle on his confidential conversation with the Queen. He had eventually resigned as Chamber-member. “For that matter, I wish to mention that it had been quite an experience to speak with someone who exceeds beyond all political suspense.”

The debt reconstruction of Aruba had not been discussed during the past week, which would not have been wise either, says Eman. “The Netherlands is too familiar with challenges in the financial field. We should consider this once it actually becomes necessary to approach the Netherlands.”

WILLEMSTAD — The American Ministry of Defense is granting the research ship Henson permission to assist with determining the exact location of the plane wreck of Divi Divi Air, which aircraft had made an emergency landing and sunk in the sea at Small Bonaire last month. Smit Salvage will be carrying out the salvage operation.

The official permission mentions ‘assistance with localizing the Britten-Norman Islander-aircraft and the pilot’. In the meantime, Dutch commercial salvaging companies have been researching the possibilities to recover the aircraft and the pilot’s body. Mammoet, amongst others, - which had also salvaged the wreck of the Russian submarine Koersk – had submitted a quotation, but Smit Salvage had been given the order.

Transport-minister Maurice Adriaens (FOL) confirms that Smit will carry out the salvaging. The Henson could have done this as well, but there ‘are too many legal snags’ according to the minister. It is not clear yet when Smit will begin the salvaging operation. Henson’s official activities will start this Saturday.

The research ship Henson had arrived on Curaçao at the beginning of this month. The Schottegat functions as a temporary homeport, where the Henson will perform maintenance activities, bunker, test equipment, and the crew will also enjoy some R & R. They had immediately expressed their willingness to assist with the salvaging attempts of the aircraft. The USNS Sumner, which is also a research ship from the American Navy, will accompany the Henson.

The nine passengers had succeeded in existing the aircraft almost unscathed and rescued by surrounding boats. The pilot had become unconscious and trapped in his seat upon the emergency landing. They had not succeeded in freeing him from his position so that he had sunk to the bottom along with the aircraft. The question is what would be left of the body more than one month after the accident. The recovery of the aircraft could also provide more information on the reason for the emergency landing. Generally speaking, these two-engine aircrafts could continue to fly for quite a while on one engine.

International trade in stolen outboard motors

ORANJESTAD — The judicial authorities had apprehended several people yesterday afternoon in connection with an international trade in stolen outboard motors. The motors are supposedly from the United States. Moreover, several motors as well as jet skis and motor spare parts had been confiscated during house searches. The house searches had been conducted at numerous locations amongst which houses and garages in Bakval, Bubali, Bucuti, Bushiri, and Matividiri. The Prosecution Council had chosen not to comment on the case yesterday. The involved officials of the Prosecution Council had not been available for comment this morning.

It is reported that the judicial authorities had acted upon indications from the American Prosecution Council. The main suspect supposedly imports boats and had sold these to various owners on the island. The motors of all of these boats had supposedly been stolen in the United States. The other suspects state they know nothing about the large-scaled theft and point towards the suspected importer.

The judicial authorities had traced the suspect by checking the serial numbers of the motors with several boat owners. The origin of the motor had been requested upon a questionable serial number. It is reported that there had been three apprehensions and that more than 25 motors have been confiscated.

For that matter, the main suspect is no stranger to the police, according to various local media. He had supposedly tried to trick an insurance company out of 200.000 florins. There is a current criminal investigation into this fraud regarding this suspect. The man had supposedly lost a civil case in First Instance and the appeal to a higher court.
