I find all the discussion about extreme weather, such as ice storms and freeze overs is fascinating.  Do not get anything that extreme here anywhere.  Must be terrible to have to contend with especially with loss of essential services.  Long term repercussion would have to be a baby boom in nine months.

Heh, heh, guess it kinda depends on whether you fancy yourself as a mountain man or not.

Klaas I am sorry to hear about the earthquake suffering. Will turn into MSM immediately. Any channel covering it???

We know what that means... one over there then one over here or somewhere on this side of the world. They seem to come in doubles

Need to find my Farmer's Almanac... is it also that time of the moon too? the Farmers Almanac said late Jan and Feb would be cold/rainy for So. CA. Had forgotten that! Thought since they joined So CA with San Fran. they would be as good this year... I am wrong!

PS all my CafePress including Christmas stein came out of Louisville then to a UPS depot in MO or ILL or Indiana. My poster came from someplace else.

Oh.. there's still a chance I can get Carnut's in exchange for a ride or Oldfart's in exchange for a roast. Laughing  Laughing geez, have to order 2 mugs now!

I am starting a Thread on grits (don't laugh) in the Lounge after I find something warm to eat and drink. All these smooth Southern Monkeys and transplant Southern Monkeys made me buy instant Grits. Now I want the real thing! or at least what to do with it.

If you are on well water, the 5 kW generator will run the well pump alone, but if you have electric water heater with a 30 amp breaker, you'll need 6,600 watts. A 5 kW generator will barely do the job. You need at least a 10 kW generator if you're an electric household. Same goes for heat pumps usually requiring 8,800 watts. 10 kW units are very expensive, $5,000 and up.

it all depends on what you want the generator to do

like i said,, for some people that have a wood stove or propane heat
BUT need the generator to RUN the well... a 6600 watt generator will do it

i think around 1200.00

im the last BOY SCOUT  Cool

You're getting warmer.  Man from utility company plus two others said minimum of 10KW, next size was I think 13KW.

And seem to be discussing two entirely differnet things.  I am talking about sufficient water for a herd of cattle and Carnut seems to think barely enough for personal survival and to flush a toilet.

But I don't think any dinky little $500 generator would cut it for very long, certainly not 8-10 weeks.

I could be wrong but that's what I think.  (And that's what I know.)

.

i have  farmer down the road........
cows and horses and a few other critters

he spent a lot of money on a generator for the exact reason you said

$500 generator and $1500 generator are not meant for long term use

you might get lucky and get one that works fine ..BUT ....BUT ....BUT

but in your case you might need to spend considerably more

the IDEA of military surplus is a GREAT IDEA
some are in great used condition or EVEN NEW OLD SURPLUS

very very cheap compared to FACTORY NEW

  LOL

So far. I cant complain about our winter here  in Pennsylvania. I am sure we will get hammered with snow sooner or later.  Sad

Ang,  not sure if your getting all the rain like here in Ohio, but I'd rather get some snow.  We need at least one good freeze to kill all the germs and bugs for the summer.  Besides, I like snow, hate rain.  We get enough of that the rest of the year....

yep.. rain here as well hon.. and  warm temps.. Dont seem normal at all for this time of year.   You are right about the bugs and germs.. ~!!! I agree totally.

[Yah do realize that most of the farmers out here have gigantic fields of wheat or corn and that they irrigate them with big with giant rolling irrigation rigs that are powered from very deep wells that have automotive engines powering them.

Again I ain't real worried about the farmers.

I guess you don't think I've ever lived in the boonies but I have and I do know a little about what I am talking.

And yes I have experienced power outages during snow blizzards.

It once took three weeks to restore power in my area and also in parts of Chattanooga.  This was following an ice storm like in the midwest where there is no snow to melt, etc.

And no, I certainly never thought for one minute you were concerned about the farmers or anybody else.  You are right about that part.
