Thanks, Trimm.  I'm looking forward to seeing this.  I've got to do Mobile Meals today and run some errands, but I'll be back late afternoon.  I can't remember if we've ever had formal status hearings before, when the Honorable Judge S. was presiding.  It will be interesting to see how the equally Honarable Judge Perry handles it.  (With speed, authority, and plenty of case law citations, I would imagine.)

Casey Anthony attorneys back in court today

Prosecutors and defense attorneys in the Casey Anthony murder case will go back to court today.

Orange Osceola Chief Judge Belvin Perry will conduct a status hearing this afternoon, although it's unclear if he will rule on any pending motions.

The state and the defense team are haggling over the relevance of 911 calls made by Cindy Anthony when she called police to report her granddaughter missing. On one of the calls, Cindy Anthony said she had gone to a local impound lot where her daughter's car was and detected a foul smell in the vehicle.

"I found my daughter's car today and it smells like there's been a dead body in the damn car," she said.
Casey Anthony is not expected to be in court for the status hearing. She is jailed in the death of her daughter, Caylee Marie Anthony.

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A status hearing is scheduled for today at 1:30 p.m. in the Casey Anthony murder case.

The defense and prosecution will be in court to give an update on what's going on with their cases.

Anthony is not expected to attend the hearing.

Casey Anthony's murder trial is set to begin on May 9, 2011. She remains jailed on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of her daughter Caylee who was last seen in June of 2008, but she was not reported missing until a month later. Her remains were found in woods near the family's home on December 11, 2008. Investigators say the toddler's body was found with duct tape over her mouth.

A status hearing in Casey Anthony’s case starts at 1:30 this afternoon, but the defendant is not expected there.

“Casey never wants to come to court, so the judge said she does not have to come to status hearings,” WFTV-Channel 9’s Kathi Belich said at noon today. “So there probably won’t be any major legal issues being argued today.”

WFTV turned to the issue of Cindy Anthony’s 911 calls. The prosecution wants the jury to hear them; the defense says the calls should be excluded as hearsay.

“The issue could come up during today’s hearing,” Belich said. “The defense now wants a special hearing on the issue before the judge rules.”

Casey Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- The case against Casey Anthony will be back in court Monday afternoon at 1:30pm, but Casey is not expected to attend. Judge Perry said she doesn't have to come to the monthly status hearings, which won't involve arguments on major issues.

WFTV.com will have a livestream of the hearing starting just before the 1:30pm start time.

Attorneys from both sides will meet for a status hearing with Chief Judge Belvin Perry Jr. and the judge could decide whether a jury should be allowed to hear Cindy Anthony's incriminating 911 call. This could be an important ruling for the case for a number of reasons.

“There's something wrong. I found my daughter's car today and it smells like there's been a dead body in the damn car,” Cindy Anthony said in the 911 call (hear it).
Cindy Anthony made the frantic 911 call minutes after Casey told her that Caylee had been missing for 31 days. Cindy allegedly told co-workers that George thought the car smelled like a dead body. It was the reason her manager made her leave work that day and get to the bottom of why Casey's car was towed and where Caylee was.

The defense is claiming the 911 call was not an excited utterance, but rather hearsay that should not be allowed in as evidence. Prosecutors, however, say they want a jury to hear that third 911 call and Cindy's first call to 911, which reveals Casey’s claim about Caylee disappearing with a nanny named Zenaida Gonzales. That is what Casey told her mother to explain why Caylee was missing.

The issue could come up during Monday’s hearing, but the defense now wants a hearing on the issue before the judge rules whether it stays or goes.
