Deadline For Women’s Life Conference Registration extended

LAUREL — South Central Regional Medical Center’s 21st annual Women’s Life Conference is set for Saturday, April 24 at Jones County Junior College. The deadline for registration has been extended to Thursday, April 22 at 5 p.m. Registration packets can be picked up in the Marketing/Community Relations Office at South Central Place in Laurel.

Karen Vanderslice, Women’s Life Conference Coordinator, said, “I have been flooded with calls from women requesting registration packets. We have extended the deadline so that they will have time to complete them and return them to my office.” Seating is still available and we encourage those planning to attend to get their completed registration packets in the mail as soon as possible. “If you have a registration packet and have not mailed it back to us by Tuesday, April 20, please drop it by our office so you can be sure we receive it by the conference deadline.”

The cost for the full day of activities is only $25. Vanderslice said, “Financial contributions from our conference sponsors have allowed us to keep our conference registration fee at this low rate. The value of the event is so much more than the $25 registration fee, because it includes a full day of activities for women.”

It is a conference tradition each year to begin the day with laughter. “Women attending the conference this year will thoroughly enjoy the mind-boggling comedy and magic of award winning magical motivator Debbie Leifer. She has entertained crowds for years with her highly energized presentation,” Vanderslice said.

The Women’s Life Conference this year will also include a special presentation by Jean Smith Vaughn, Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Mississippi and our very own Alex Hodge, Sheriff of Jones County.  They will discuss a variety of women’s safety related issues. “It is important that we learn how to keep ourselves safe,” Vanderslice said. “They will talk about scams, how to protect yourself from being a victim, and more.”

Women will also attend a health related seminar of their choice presented by area physicians and other health care professionals. Topics this year include medical weight loss, women and heart disease, advancements in eye care, diabetes and wound care, peri-menopause and issues relating to joint pain. One physician will also talk about advancements in medical technology.

“After the educational sessions, women will attend the conference health fair. There will be numerous booths providing free health screenings and a variety of health information,” Vanderslice said.

Women will gather between 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. in the dining facility at Jones County Junior College for a wonderful conference luncheon. “During the luncheon, Debbie Leifer, our opening speaker, will call out the winners of our door prizes.” This year conference planners have received more than 90 door prizes donated by area businesses. “We have two grand prize gifts this year,” Vanderslice said. “We will be giving away a diamond and sapphire dinner ring valued at $725 and a pink sapphire and gold necklace valued at $400.”  Numerous other items will be given away at the conference including gift baskets, gift certificates, decorative glass, jewelry, pewter, scented candles and more.

Jones OnStage, the entertaining show choir of Jones County Junior College, will perform prior to the 2 p.m. keynote presentation by featured speaker Beth Holloway. Holloway, the mother of missing teenager Natalee Holloway, will present an inspiring message—one that has touched the hearts of women across America. “There is no way to fully comprehend what this family has gone through,” Vanderslice said. “Beth Holloway has made it her mission to travel the country and talk about women and safey. Holloway’s presentation at the conference will certainly be one that you will not want to miss.”

At the end of the day, every woman attending the Women’s Conference will be given a beautiful floral print designed by local artist Amelia Crumbley. “We have been giving participants a conference print since our first event in 1990,” Vanderslice said. “Many women have a complete collection.”

Thirty minutes prior Jug and Beth Twitty’s arrival at the VDS' residence on the morning of May 31, 2005, Deepak Kalpoe’s was observed parked inside the gate of the VDS' compound by the handlers who had met them at the airport upon arriving on the Island.

Deepak's June 13th suspect statement give an account of his movements from the time he left his workplace at 11:00 PM on the evening of May 30, 2005 right through the wee hours of May 31, 2005.  His presence at the VDS residence prior to the arrival of Jug and Beth was an obvious omission..

Deepak Kalpoe related to one of the security guards while they were both detained in the same period of time in June, 2005 that he was a participant along with Paulus van der Sloot and others in the collaboration of the Holiday Inn fabrication.

Considering the Holiday Inn fabrication was conveyed to Jug and Beth in the early hours of May 31, 2005 ... the meeting Deepak had with Paulus and others must taken place prior to the Twitty group's arrival at the VDS' residence.

Deepak had to have been aware that Natalee Holloway was deceased on May 30, 2005 or he would not have been a participant in a lie ... a lie that would be exposed if a live Natalee had turned up.

Canadian killed in ATV crash in Aruba

LONDON, Ont. - A St. Thomas man is dead and his wife in hospital after a crash on an ATV in Aruba that has raised questions about the safety of some vacation excursions.

According to Aruba newspaper reports, Frederich Norman, 41, was killed Friday and Christine Norman, 37, was injured when an ATV they had rented was struck by a pickup truck that may have swerved into an oncoming lane.

The crash occurred on the main road that connects the port city of Oranjestad, where cruise ships dock, with resorts that line beaches to the north.

The pair was travelling on a seven-day cruise on the Caribbean Princess, said Julie Benson, vice-president of public affairs for Princess Cruise Lines in California.

"The whole thing is just so tragic," Benson said Tuesday. "We were very saddened to learn about the accident."

Benson confirmed the couple was from the St. Thomas area.

Benson also said Christine Benson had been airlifted from a hospital in Aruba to Canada.

A patient named Christine Benson was listed in fair condition Tuesday at London Health Sciences Centre, but the hospital could not confirm her age.

A four-wheel ATV ridden by the Normans collided head-on with the pickup truck, throwing both Canadians from the vehicle, according to a report in an Aruban newspaper, Diario, and online accounts from fellow passengers.

According to the newspaper story, the truck may have swerved into the ATV and police reportedly found drugs in the cab.

Photographs on the newspaper website showed the front end of the ATV smashed and ambulance crews working on victims by the side of the road.

Many travellers cited the accident as reason to be wary when choosing vacation excursions.

The ATV rental was not one sanctioned by Princess Cruise Lines, which requires a stringent set of rules and safety measures before recommending local companies to passengers, Benson said.

"I'm going to post a warning on the Aruba board -- wear a helmet and be aware of local driving rules," said a fellow cruise passenger from Philadelphia.

From different lane directions to looser safety standards, travellers take a risk when driving in other countries, several cruise ship veterans said online.
