I just wanted to say thank you for the prayers!   ::MonkeyKiss::

My son's surgery went well. Now we're dealing with the pain that goes with it. They gave him a femural (sp?) block before they finished the surgery, and he was doing better until it wore off at 4:00 this morning. He had no control of his leg while the block was still in gear and I discovered what it means to have "Mama" kick in gear!  There IS a reason my legs look like a full back's! When push comes to shove, I can almost carry a 265lb. football player!  ::MonkeyHaHa:: The trip from the car to the bed was a real trip! His girlfriend (all 98 lbs. of her) was there trying to hold his leg up off of the floor while I had the rest of him! Sometimes I'm glad there aren't cameras everywhere. Crutches were useless at that point because he couldn't control his leg enough to keep it up. We made it............. and I made a beeline to the store to get a urinal!   :smt045

 TM? The ice pack machine has already been a tremendous help and I can't thank you enough for making me aware of it! We'll get through this and I'm so grateful for the prayers! That's not a cursory remark............. I really mean it! Thank you so much for praying for my son. CBB....so glad surgery went well and your son is getting good care.  He will have pain with that surgery...so my advice....give him the pain pill whenever he can have it....
it helps to control pain better....rather than wait until he is hurting badly.

Did TM answer you about the recliner?  That is a post-op persons best friend for many types of surgery....don't know about the leg.  I could go on....think I will be a nurse
forever....lol.

Last advice....sleep when the kid sleeps.... ::MonkeyHaHa::

CBB, I just got on to check on your son.  Am so glad to hear the surgery went well.  Take good care of him  (and yourself also).  ::MonkeySlide::

CBB, I'm so thankful the surgery went well, and you made it home with him and got him in bed.  That's an accomplishment!  Good idea on the urinal at least until he's getting around with control of that leg; and it will come in handy when he's really hurting and doesn't want to make it worse.  I don't know about yours, but my son made me a nervous wreck on crutches....another accident just waiting to happen!   ::MonkeyShocked:: ::MonkeyEek::  I agree with all of Mere's advice...she's such a good nurse.  The "machine" was our best friend through the first couple weeks, I'm so glad it's helping your son too.  The pain meds don't ever seem to last until the next dosage time, so hopefully the cold water circulating will help minimize the pain.  I'm sure they will have him doing some exercises with the leg soon (if not already) and the machine will come in handy after those too.  Take care of yourself too please!

Man OK After Penis Gets Stuck in Pipe

(Guys, you may want to skip this part)  A man who got his penis stuck in a metal pipe was freed after an industrial metal grinder was used to release him.

The Metro reports that the unidentified man, 40, showed up at Southampton General Hospital in the UK where doctors were unable to remove the pipe. So they called the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service who safely cut the pipe off using a grinder in what a spokesman said was a "delicate operation.

Hospital staff said the man never explained how the accident happened. The fire and rescue spokesman told the Metro, "It's certainly an unusual call-out, and I'm sure the man won't be getting into that situation again."

Thanks for all the good advice, guys! I'm listening.......... trust me, I'm really listening!

Tomorrow, he takes the brace off for the first time to take a shower. I have absolutely no idea how to accomplish that. He has managed to stand up on one leg beside the bed to use the urinal......... and that's it. That alone requires pain meds 15 minutes prior, in preparation. He has only tub/showers at his house. I have a walk in, but that would require getting in the car. I can't fathom any way for him to step up and over into a tub shower. We'll figure it out somehow. Maybe one of those tub seats would be best?

He sets his alarm to take the pain meds on time. The surgeon suggested we do that for the first 5 days, anyway. He starts Physical Therapy next week and all I can say is that I'm not going to think about that until it's time to put him in the car. I know it's for the best to do exactly what he's supposed to do.

OK, enough of me and my problems!

Mere? There are several things on that Louisiana list that applies to me! Maybe I could be an honorary Cajun? Michael called my Mother "Mam-Maw", I had to buy a separate oversized suitcase for the Mardis Gras beads for the plane trip home from New Orleans, and then decorated my whole deck and table umbrella with them for three years! I know what a dead crawfish is and I don't eat them, my utility bill has been higher than my house payment and are you really telling me that purple, green and gold DON'T look good together?   ::MonkeyShocked::   ::MonkeyTongue::

Your story reminds me of the time my brother was in a hip spica and we had to carry him up the stairs in the house and then up the stairs again.  We were looking for him one day, where was he?  Across the street leaning on his crutches shooting hoops!

What about a sponge bath at first?  Or, there are cloths just for this that you get at the pharmacy now that you can give someone a bed bath with and dispose of them.

It will all work out.  You are a very resourceful woman!  Pain meds usually take 20 mins to work if it is by mouth, he may need more for the full affect.  Did the doctor say he can also take extra Tylenol if needed?  He is a big guy!  I hope they are medicating accordingly!

We are fine.  He has contacts now and it takes me anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours to put in.  He refuses to wear glasses, he says he is afraid the kids will know his eyes are bad.  It sucks to be a teenager as much as we look upon those years wistfully, we only look back knowing what we do now.  Fortunately, they are extended wear and I take them out Saturday night and put them in Sunday night.  I too am glad there are no cameras watching!

Daughter finely got to move her computer home so she is working from home now.  They are adjusting pretty well to their new schools. Even with the ups and downs I love having them here. Every Mom has that certain "Mom" thing that they do that makes them special.  She knows what is important to her child and knows each child is different.  There is no such thing as normal or typical for either a child or a mother. 

I think what I have learned from being a Monkey since Natalee is this:  drugs, alcohol, sex, and any other addiction or distraction breaks that mother-child bond and the connection is no longer there.  The addiction is the important part of the relationship, all else pales until that is satisfied and then the drug, etc. takes the mother away.  This goes for Fathers, too.

No one, no one, in their right mind would leave a child with Misty.  As soon as someone takes an interest in her, she turns away from them and is jonesing for drugs and trolling for anything and everything.  It is as if she is a zombie that has inhabited a shell of a body.  Quite frankly, I have never seen anything like it. 

If there wasn't this 'toy in the sandbox' way of looking at the children by both Ron and his Mom (mine, mine) they would have recognized the instability of their situation to raise both HaLeigh and Jr and take care of that before Ron sniffed and snorted his life away.  It was a tragedy waiting to happen.

Klaas , I am very sorry ! I thought it was clear not to watch the video . I know nothing about computers but I thought maybe there was some way to get information fron somewhere on the page .

All I can tell for sure is that the video was made by a Dutch person, likely made in the Netherlands and it was made 1 year ago.  Not much anyone can do about it.  It's horrible.  Something I would expect Joran van der Sloot to do.

In this case it appears to be someone Dutch and likely in the Netherlands.  It was also uploaded to google videos a year ago.  The chances of figuring out who did it and doing something about it are nil.

I visited with Harley yesterday & he can walk all over the house, he has healed so quickly!! You can tell he feels better because he wiggles all over again when you pet him. before, he hurt too bad to move!

THE LAKE CUMBERLAND AREA AS WELL AS LOCATIONS ACROSS SOUTH-CENTRAL KENTUCKY CLOSEST TO THE TENNESSEE BORDER WILL SEE THE LARGEST SNOW ACCUMULATIONS... NAMELY SOUTH OF A LINE FROM MORGANTOWN TO LIBERTY. THESE AREAS COULD POTENTIALLY SEE SNOWFALL TOTALS IN THE 5 TO 9 INCH RANGE. No provisions in the house.  Was off work yesterday due to being sick (got even sicker watching KC's court date).  Need to go to the grocery but can you imagine how many people will be doing the same thing?  LOTs for sure.  If we get upwards of 9" of snow that will be close to a record for us around here--4" is considered a lot.  It has been 14 yrs. since we got that much snow.  Our largest was 26" and that happened in the 1960's---I remember it.  The national guard was out clearing roads and going house to house checking on people.

I've noticed a change in the past hour, too. 

Noticed the Search function is disabled and also through individual profiles you cannot find a posters recent posts.   Hope that isn't permanent.    ::MonkeyWaa::

Some of the functions go away when there is a higher load on the server.  I'll find out for sure.  I knew about the posters recent posts as I tried that today myself, didn't know about the search function.

My questions for the tech guy:

1.  Is the inability to search a persons posts permanent or is it based upon server load?  It's kind of important to be able to search posts.
 
2.  Is the SEARCH function in general gone for good or is it only during higher load on the server?


Answer:

Those are both disabled only as load climbs. If things are going smoothly during trafficky times we can up the limit on their use. I'll try bumping them up a couple points for starters and see how that goes :)

Muffy, I finally got out and bought some groceries yesterday afternoon.  I got the last of the bread, hamburger/hot dog buns.  It is a madhouse everywhere in town.  We are under a Winter Storm Warning with still the 5-9" inches snow (more locally heavier snow possible). 

Mere, this is considered a BIG snow for us.  1-2 inches is considered bad for us.

BluMonkey, it is VERY unusual that we get this much snow and you "Northerners" don't.  If I can make it through work tomorrow at least I will have the rest of the weekend.  Got my groceries, have my wood for the fireplace so LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW.   ::MonkeyJnBox::

For a few years now I've used Amazon for most of my Christmas shopping and the bulk of my online shopping and I'm never disappointed, especially when the product SHIPS from AMAZON.

Example: 

Tuesday evening at 7:30pm I ordered a vacuum cleaner from Amazon.com.  I used the free standard shipping because I knew I'd get it pretty fast from Amazon anyway.  Our old vacuum broke.

I received the vacuum TODAY and was using it by 3pm.  So we got it in less than  48 hours standard FREE shipping.  How's that for service!  ::MonkeyCheer4::

AH! I've had the same great experience with Amazon, Klaas! I do most of my Christmas shopping online, and this year it almost all came from what I found on their site because they are SO reliable!

I'm trying to figure out what the heck has happened to my computer! For a couple of weeks, I've had trouble when searching from Yahoo (my homepage). I'd get "redirected" to a totally unrelated site. For a couple of days, I ended up at a porn page! I don't visit porn sites............. honest, so there's no way it could be something linked to my computer that I picked up while purposefully browsing anything like that. Something called "Bink" would often appear up top as well. It was frustrating! Today, I just got online and ALL of my "favorites" are just gone! I have nothing bookmarked, and I had over seventy bookmarks! My desktop icons are 1/2 what they were when I left this morning, too! It said my computer had been automatically updated, but I wouldn't call this an update!

According to a Wall Street Journal story on an embattled White House, “Some attendees said they were planning to air ads attacking conservative Democrats who were balking at Mr. Obama’s health-care overhaul. ‘F—ing +++++++,’ Mr. Emanuel scolded the group, according to several participants.” The Arc hopes that the Members of Congress in that meeting were equally offended.

This is the second serious verbal miscue by the Administration about people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. President Obama’s unfortunate statement last year on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, equating his poor bowling performance with that of people with intellectual disabilities, sparked justifiable outrage from people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. The President subsequently apologized for his remarks and disabilities advocates saw it as a teachable moment. Mr. Emanuel’s use of hateful language would suggest that it is the White House staff that needs to be taught a lesson in respect for people with disabilities.

Statements such as these—particularly when used by someone at high level—amplifies pervasive societal attitudes that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities somehow don’t measure up—that their lives are worth less. “Using a slur about people with intellectual disabilities to criticize other people just isn’t right,” said Peter V. Disability rights advocates had high hopes for this Administration when the President appointed a Special Assistant to the President for Disability Policy. This was a move that the Administration called: “our first step to ensure that we have a strong advocate for people with disabilities at the highest levels of our Administration.”

The more than seven million individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families demand an apology for Mr. Emanuel’s use of language that denigrates our constituency. The White House needs to lead by example and demonstrate through words and actions that it is not acceptable to use people with disabilities as a source for ridicule. To condone this language is to deny opportunities for people with disabilities in the workplace, in the community, in school, and in every other quarter of society.

To all you monkey sleuths:  Where would I start looking for a murder that happened in West Memphis Arkansas back in late 1870's to early 1900's.  Supposed a man was bring paryoll across the bridge to his employees and was murdered.  Supposedly the murderer was hanged w/in a couple of months for this murder.  How do I go about finding the actual documented story?  Can anyone help me??

I am just going to throw out a few thoughts here .... not sure if your in AK or not, but the local libraries usually have the newspapers on archives.  Or... try doing a search for the incident name .... persons name, murderer's name  etc.

Do you mean look in the local library in the archives for the name?  I am so dumb at these things.  I live in MS.  The company was a logging company and I thought I could search that way.  I keep hitting a dead end.  My great grandfather was the man supposedly murdered.  My grandfather was a kid and states he remembers being held on the shoulders of an onlooker so he could see the hanging of the man who murdered his father.  I don't know if this story was true or not.  I cannot trace my family back past my grandfather because of this as he was put in an orphanage after that and then it burned..  I feel so hopeless.  Thanks for responding to me.

I know the man murdered's last name was Underwood.  I think there was only one logging company in West Memphis Arkansas at that time.  I just did not know how to approach this without going there in person.

The name "West Memphis" came into use in the early 1900s because lumber shipped from the Memphis market to foreign buyers brought higher prices. The lumber industry played a large role in the founding of West Memphis. Zack Bragg came to this region around 1904. He established the Bragg Mill believing the best opportunity because the logging end of the lumber industry lay in the timber of Eastern Arkansas. Bragg used the Mississippi River and the new railroads as transportation for his logs.
Although the mill and its surroundings were known as Bragg they were later referred to as West Memphis because of the higher prices it would bring for lumber. Another man who realized the potential of the lumber industry was P.T Bolz of St. Louis. In 1914, he sent William Hundhausen to survey the area. This resulted in the Bolz Slack Barrel Cooperage Plant. Its location near the intersection of the Missouri Pacific Railroad and Rock Island allowed for easy transportation by rail or by river.

Thanks to all for your information.  You have given me some great starters.  My dad was born in 1923, his dad is questionable but I figure at least in 1917 to 1920.  And his father is the one who was supposedly murdered carrying the payroll across the bridge.  The timeline is right in your historical link.  We hae talked about this in my family for years.  This could be the imagination of a boy who grew up in an orphanage.  Who knows?  But, I want to sincerely thank everyone.  I get so bumfuzzled sometimes.I sure would like to know.  My brother said to me before he died, "You know, our last name may not even be what we thought it was."  Geez!!!!!!!!!!

1917-1920 for what, his birth?  It would have to be before that or he would have only been 3-6 years old when your dad was born.  His death?  It could not have been more than 9 months before your dad was born.

This is something that has bugged me for many years.  I have an uncle with the family bible.  I am going to call him first to make sure I have first and middle names right.  My immediate grandfather was such a man of tall tales that I just want to find out mainly if he took on another name after leaving an orphanage when he was 18.  He stated he had a younger brother that ran away from the same orphanage when he was 15.  So, here is another thread to the family that we do not even know about.  If he did, I feel like when he was old enough, that one joined the service, JMO.  It is a real puzzle.  I never thought much about this till my oldest brother died a few years ago and it has haunted me that our last name may not be Underwood.

I have done quite a bit of genealogy as well.  There should be orphanage records and census records from 1880 if you know your grandfathers first name.

My grandfather was John D. Underwood and I believe his brothr was James Underwood.  There dad was also John Underwood even though my grandad was not a Jr.  I have heard the orphanage was in Memphis and burned up.  I hope it was not during Georgia Tann's reign.  The story bout her is she illegally took kids and adopted them out and destroyed records.  I am hoping this was before her time.

Northern Rose, as I stated earlier, I have an Uncle with a family Bible and I may take a trip to see what is in it for myself.  I loved my grandad but this story sounds unbelievable.  When he would come to the house, he would tell us tales of his wanderings and we would all sit there with our mouths open.  The story goes his fathe John Underwood owned a logging company in West Memphis, Arkansas and was killed for the payroll being it across the bridge.  I assumed that would be to Memphis, TN.  He had two boys, my grandfather John D. Underwood and James Underwood.  They were put into an orphanage.  The perpetrator was caught and someone held my grandfather on their shoulders to watch this man be hung.  I cannot imagine.  I do not know this man's name but I have been trying to find records of hanging back then and the reason for it and I have not gotten anywhere.  I find stats but no other information except for racially motivated lynchings.  I am stumped so I will go visit other family members and gather a little more information and re-post.  Thanks

Also does your son have a walking frame to assist him?  My brother broke his pelvis and has one of those frames/walkers and rails were installed on his bed so he can now get himself out of bed to that walker and into the bathroom.  Doesn't sound like much but it is progress that gives him some independence and dignity that he appreciates.  Also his wife can now leave him alone for short periods.

When my FIL passed I received 3 huge boxes of genealogy notes as he knew I was subborn enough to continue and am now hooked.  They were headstone rubbing's etc that he spent at least 50 years compiling the old fashion way by going to churches and graveyards.  His history is in Scotland and since his passing I have traced it back to Ireland and am now stuck at the great wall of Ireland where the records were burned or shredded and used for gun muzzle packing.  I then started my own family and am now stuck as I have a pile of records in Polish and Cyrillic Russian that I can not read.  It is a pleasure doing records that I can not only read but exist!

NR, I was in Scottland for 2 wks and found that Brass Rubbings are popular. A place/stores will have a huge selection of brass plates with a relief of a famous stone work. They supply the paper and crayons for a fee.  I did a really cool, large rubbing of an ancient Pictish stone found some where in Scottland.

NR, that is an interesting story at that link.  I am a genealogy nut and I love reading old articles, books etc.  I told my son that I know he isn't interested in family genealogy but I am and have quite a collection of books, records, deeds, wills etc. that I am trying to get it all recorded in Family Treemaker and I told him to take everything I collected and donate it to our local Historical Society (I even have it all in a big tupperware bin).

Did someone ask where I was with all the snow? I'm in upper East TN, on the Virginia, NC border. Winters were like this while I was a kid........... lots of snow, but most of my adult life, it's only snowed occasionally each year, and then big snows weren't common. This year has definately been a return to childhood for me, but it's not as much fun when you aren't dying to get the sleds out!   ::MonkeyHaHa::

I have two fireplaces, and my son's house has one........... which is inoperable.   ::MonkeyNoNo:: He lives in Mom and Dad's house, which I got after they passed away. Before they ran the direct lines for Natural Gas in the neighborhood, Mom had a big tank put against the house in the back yard and converted the natural wood fireplace to gas. She ended up hating the way the tank looked and had it removed, but never had the installed lines or gas logs taken out. It's occurred to me that I should either have it connected to the direct lines or have them removed so we can burn wood, but I just haven't gotten around to doing it. We have flashlights and candles and blankets and groceries.   :thumright:

I've been trying to take a picture of the snow............ that's not working out well at night!

 I am not Northern Rose but as far as I know most of them are public. There are a number of ways to find them. Easiest way is to join Ancestry or Genealogy.com As they have lots of information. I have found lots of that on those two sites. They other way is to go to the state/county and town history sites and start looking. Hope that helps. There is a site called Cindys list of Genealogy sites that might help. Or use any search engine and put in the name you want + Genealogy and see what you come up with.

That is cool seahorse. They didn't have any thing like that when I was doing my research.

Me too.  I do have a fireplace but it is out of order due to the smokestack on top of the house.  Critters put a hole in it.  It is a prefab, the company does not make it anymore, and there is no way to replace just the one part.  It will cost $10,000 to have the whole thing replaced just because of the hole.  The smokestack is now covered in sheet metal, so it looks great, and the tree is cut down so the critters do not have easy access.

The rest of the fireplace and chimney pass inspection.  We have never used it and we have been here more than 10 years.  It is in the kitchen, our house is very small and it is not a practical place.  The family before us never used it and they were here 5 years and the original owners only used it a couple of times.  We could really use the room it takes up.   :smt017

I have inquired about adding gas but they told me even vent-free gas logs need venting.   :roll:

Oh my gosh its Leroy's brother!  I miss Leroy being that little.  He is adorable HH!!

Bearly - we have a fireplace that was originally for wood. We converted it to vent less gas. The new ones have a sensor that turns them off if there is not enough oxygen in the air so they are very safe. We love ours. You should research them online!  Another option is to get a radiant gas heater. The do not have an open flame and are vent less.

Thank you so much, Boyz.  I have been in contact with the fireplace company near me.  They are reputable and they are fighting me on this.  I don't know why they won't do it, that is the reason they are giving me.  They are friends and also are the ones you see on the news talking about fireplaces, chimneys, and such when something comes up.  I am very frustrated over this as no one seems to be able to help me. 

I called another company first, this is before we became friends.  They wanted me to replace the whole thing, too.  One of the problems, as I see it, there needs to be two companies involved, one that supplies the tanks of gas and one that puts in the logs.  I even offered to have them put a vent in the side of the house.

The handyman wants me to get an electric one.  I want one I can look at, it seems like it should be simple.  He tried calling the gas company as he bowled with the owner years ago and he will not call him back.  Another issue is I live in a development.  Other people here have them, so I do not see what the big deal is.

The gas company will fight you. We ended up buying our own from Home Depot and then installed it (they are pretty easy to do). We have one at the restaurant and have for about 15 years with no exhaust at all. Every time we need to have it cleaned no one will do it. They are worried about liability. As for the gas, you can just buy a 100 lb cylinder and then it is like putting the gas on your grill - just have to have the regulator.

I took a few before I started "hoofing" it to Mom's/Michael's house, and didn't get far until a kindly neighbor gave me a lift. He even stopped and let me try to take a pic in approx the same spot as the Fall one I posted!  ::MonkeyHaHa:: I took a few there, too. If I get them in order, you'll see why I didn't drive. I couldn't even see my driveway, much less head out in the car! The road in front of my house hadn't been scraped yet, but the roads had been as we went.

SEATTLE - The young Bellevue mother accused of starving her 6-week-old daughter pleaded not guilty before a King County judge.

Last week, King County Prosecutors charged Brittainy and Samuel Labberton with criminal mistreatment in the third degree. Samuel also pleaded not guilty.

According to charging papers, Brittainy is accused of not feeding her daughter enough. Prosecutors allege the mother has said she didn't want her daughter to be fat, and the father believed the baby was underweight because she "spit up all the time." Court papers allege the young mother gave the infant a baby bottle with laxatives.

Last week, Brittainy denied the charge and said she just had a fussy baby who couldn't keep food down. The mother of two girls said she constantly took her young daughter to the doctor because she was worried.

"As a matter of fact my, daughter eats more than I do," Brittainy told KING 5 News. "If I had one drop of food left in my house, I would give it to my kids before I even thought about myself."

The baby was hospitalized at less than 2 months of age after failing to gain sufficient weight. Officials say she gained weight in the hospital and in a foster home.

Brittainy did not say anything outside court. She was briefly booked into jail and released. Her attorney, David Sorenson, had no comment.

Samuel also appeared before a judge. Both parents were ordered not to have contact with their two daughters unless they are supervised visits.

Child Protective Services placed both girls into foster care in the fall of 2008.

If convicted, the couple could spend a maximum of a year behind bars.

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Two children are in state custody and their parents are charged with felony child abuse and manufacturing meth.

Jackson County Narcotics agents arrested Christopher Stanley and his wife Valeria Williams after finding a meth lab in their home in Hurley.

Investigators say the children, ages three and seven, were sleeping on the floor next to two dogs to stay warm. There was only one space heater in the house and the children didn't have blankets.

According to WLOX-TV, they also said it looked like the children had been wearing the same clothes for days, and that water in the bathroom came from a hose shoved through a hole in the wall from outside.

The couple's adopted son, 18-year-old Chad Bangs, was also arrested and charged with manufacturing meth and generation of hazardous waste.

The truth is, I was sort of hoping someone might come along. It's almost exactly one mile from my house to Mom's, and used to be a good daily walk for me, for a 2 mile round trip. He has no name yet, poor guy, but the vet needed a name for his paper work and the lil fella is such a lil pistol I had been saying "come here you lil booger" when he would get into something, so when the vet asked, the lack of sleep and the past month kicked in, my mind went blank and all I could think of was lil booger..so he got stuck with booger on his paper work at the vets..

and rode around in the 'google car' checking out where my grandfather lived (at that time) with the address from the R.C.

Thanks Northern Rose  ::rhino::  I can't believe how so much has become so readily accessible since I worked on my family tree. Question for you does Canada have a site that has records for land owners back in the late 1800's. Another question I was looking for records of border crossings back in the 1920's. But The one place I found you had to have dates and names. I have the name but no real dates just between this time and that. So I was never able to get any information. As they wanted so much $ for each date.  I guess what I am asking has the government made it easier to get the information? If that makes any sense.

Last year the Govt in Canada launched a site that has a pile of documents from passenger lists, census, tax to war records.  It depends in what part of Canada you are looking for records in.  There are some before Confederation in 1867 for the Western Land Grants and then Crown Land grants after Confederation. Here is the main link to the site.  It takes a bit to navigate it but it is full of records.  They just put up the 1891 census as well.  Not sure about border crossing.  If they arrived by ship that would all be there but don't know if there are even records from borders with the US from back then.

Bearlyhere, I know just what you mean!  I was riding around in the google "streetview" car. I found 1924 white row-houses in Phillie with stained glass windows..1470 N 55th or 140 N 16th, Phillie. I kept ridding up and down the street, so beautiful. A cousin went to the libriary and dug up resident addresses of a family member in a 1896 directory, unfortunately, the 1896 resident was replaced by the charming row-houses. I appreiciate architecture.

I saw they had another big earth quake in Northern California Klaas. I am wonderfing the same thing is it going to trigger some thing going down to Southern California or is going to trigger some thing going up towards Alaska. Thank God the epic center was out in the ocean and not on land. Was it the same fault line as the first one?

HELLO night crew monkeys, I just came here to vent and cry and say ouch..lol...The two dogs decided tog et into a real knock down drag out fight tonight instead of playing like they usually do, and I decided to break them up and guess who got bite....ME>...ouch, now I dont know who the guilty party was that did the biting..lol....but boy did I get it......

They are saying that this earthquake today was an aftershock of the 6.5 from last month, it was in the same area.

THE NEW MADRID FAULT SYSTEM EXTENDS 120 MILES SOUTHWARD from the area of Charleston, Missouri, and Cairo, Illinois, through New Madrid and Caruthersville, following Interstate 55 to Blytheville and on down to Marked Tree, Arkansas. It crosses five state lines and cuts across the Mississippi River in three places and the Ohio River in two places.

THE FAULT IS ACTIVE, AVERAGING MORE THAN 200 MEASURED EVENTS per YEAR (1.0 or more on the Richter scale), about 20 per month. Tremors large enough to be felt (2.5 - 3.0 on the Richter scale) are noted annually. Every 18 months the fault releases a shock of 4.0 or more, capable of local minor damage. The most recent registering 4.3 along the New Madrid Fault on Thanksgiving evening, 1996, which was felt by citizens in the states of Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky, Illinois and Mississippi. Magnitudes of 5.0 or greater occurring about once per decade, can do significant damage, and be felt in several states.

He's getting better................ PT is hard and the routine has notched up since he has to get there, but he is walking (sorta) with a walker. His Dad had to get back to DC rather quickly and unexpectedly..........  (ROFLMAO!! Enjoy the 30 inches of snow) so between work and Michael, I've been a little busy. It's the week-end and girlfriend is taking over for the most part until Monday!

American Legion’s Operation Comfort Warriors competes for $250K Pepsi grant

INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 1, 2010) – The American Legion’s Operation Comfort Warriors is competing for a $250,000 grant to be awarded by Pepsi Cola, Inc. More than 700 charities are competing for grants, which are determined by the number of votes received at its Web site. As of this morning, Operation Comfort Warriors was 21st  in voting. The top two vote getters will receive quarter-million dollar grants.

Since December 2008, the American Legion family has raised funds for Operation Comfort Warriors, a program dedicated to meeting the needs of wounded military personnel, providing them with comfort items not usually supplied by the government. “The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq continue. Military service will always include inherent dangers from training and other hazardous duties,” American Legion National Commander Clarence E. Hill said. “As long as our men and women are in harm’s way, there will continue to be wounded warriors. The American Legion needs to be there for our heroes. Operation Comfort Warriors is an excellent way to show our appreciation for their sacrifices. All administrative and marketing costs for Operation Comfort Warriors are paid for by The American Legion, meaning 100 percent of all donations and grants received go to the troops.

Where the one struck in CA is (if I remember correctly) has a small volcano under the surface out in the sea. It's been a few years since I researched it so memory is hazy.

We have over 2 feet and working on 3 here in Virginia. Power went out about 3:30 this AM and we started preparing for the long haul. Trying to get a fire started in the fireplace (we never use it, but keep it clean and wood on hand just in case). Anyway the power came back on at 11 AM so maybe they were prepared this time. Keeping my fingers crossed. Don't mind being stuck in the house as long as we have power.
I keep saying I am going to get a generator, but this only happens once every 8 or 9 years.
