You hear about the 15 year old girl here in Dallas that was found dead along with her month old baby?    They have figured that she had a medical condition was feeding the baby, must have passed out on top of the baby and they both died.

No I hadn't heard about that one. So sad for the whole family.

Just got done making a double batch of fudge, spinach dip and onion dip for a party tomorrow  ::MonkeyReindeer::  Now all I have to do is hollow out my sour dough loaf for the spinach dip and I'll be ready  ::ElfMonkey::

1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen chopped spinach, thawed (do not use fresh)
1 1/2 c. sour cream
1 c. mayonnaise (I use Hellmann's)
1 (4 oz.) pkg. Knorr vegetable soup mix
1 (8 oz.) can water chestnuts, finely chopped
3 green onions, finely chopped
Loaf of pumpernickel bread (I use sour dough round loaf)

Squeeze spinach until dry. In medium bowl, stir together spinach, sour cream and soup mix. Add finely chopped water chestnuts and green onions. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours or overnight. Cut slice from top of round loaf of pumpernickel bread, hollow out loaf to leave shell to contain dip. Use bread removed from shell and top slice to cut into bite size pieces. Butter inside of bread shell, fill loaf with dip and place on platter and surround with bread pieces and variety of raw vegetables. Then...GET OUT OF THE WAY!!! After the dip is eaten, enjoy the dip soaked bread shell as well.

I haven't posted here forever, but this is great.

This dip is made by someone in the family for every get-together! We have always used the round hawaiian bread with it & it's delicious! Of course I could eat that dip with just a big spoon!!!  ::MonkeyWink::

One Christmas Eve, a frenzied young man ran into a pet shop looking for an unusual Christmas gift for his wife. The shop owner suggested a parrot, named Chet, which could sing famous Christmas carols. This seemed like the perfect gift.

"How do I get him to sing?" The young man asked, excitedly.

"Simply hold a lighted match directly under his feet," was the shop owner's reply.

The shop owner held a lighted match under the parrot's left foot. Chet began to sing: "Jingle Bells! Jingle Bells! ..." The shop owner then held another match under the parrot's right foot. Then Chet's tune changed, and the air was filled with: " Silent Night, Holy Night..."

The young man was so impressed that he paid the shop-keeper and ran home as quickly as he could with Chet under his arm. When the wife saw her gift she was overwhelmed.

"How beautiful!" She exclaimed, "Can he talk?"

"No," the young man replied, "But he can sing. Let me show you."

So the young man whipped out his lighter and placed it under Chet's left foot, as the shop-keeper had shown him, and Chet crooned: "Jingle Bells! Jingle bells!..." The man then moved the lighter to Chet's right foot, and out came: "Silent Night, Holy night..."

The wife, her face filled with curiosity, then asked, "What if we hold the lighter between his legs?"

The man did not know. "Let's try it," he answered, eager to please his wife.

So they held the lighter between Chet's legs. Chet twisted his face, cleared his throat, and the little parrot sang out loudly like it was the performance of his life:

"Chet's nuts roasting on an open fire...."

Take care of lil kitty ::MonkeyAngel:: I found one that had been abandonded at birth, the vert said he was not even 24 hrs old when I found him at our office. I snapped him up (gently) put him on our scale at the office for postage and he only weighed .25 ounces, so called my daughter and had her go ASAP to buy KRM, heating blanket and bottles and tiny nipples and fed him every 2 hrs and turned his heating pad on, I even took him back to work with me on certain days when no one was home so he could be fed often. Wow, 2 weeks later I had him up to .4 ounces and he not is the best kitty we ever had, spoiled no doubt and loves to undecorate the Christmas tree ::MonkeyDevil:: I hope these pics give you hope and will say a prayer and have kitty say a prayer for him.......I can't help but think how much Kyron would love the kittens.

Raining pretty much all day yesterday and most of the day today.  They say the big storm should hit some time tomorrow morning and they say it will be BAD.  I ran my important errands today and really don't have to go anywhere tomorrow.  We won't flood here so we'll be fine.   ::MonkeyCool::

California, Utah awash in rain, snow and mud

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Southern California faces another water-logged day Wednesday with renewed threats of flash flooding, especially in San Diego county.

The National Weather Service is forecasting rain rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour, which could prompt flooding in the San Bernardino, Santa Ana and Palomar Mountains, and along the Orange County coastal plains.

On Tuesday, storm-weary Californians slogged through another day of record-breaking snow, rain and flooding from a series of storms that prompted an emergency declaration from the state's governor.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proclamation covers Kern, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo and Tulare counties in southern California. The declaration warns that the forecast calls for "extraordinary and continuing rainfall" that is likely to cause more flooding and landslides in the region and authorizes state assistance to local authorities.

The five-day rain total has topped 10 inches in many areas, with much heavier amounts in some locales. More than 21 inches has fallen on Twin Peaks in San Bernardino county, with Twin Creek receiving nearly 20 inches.

In Los Angeles County, meanwhile, authorities ordered the evacuation of more than 230 homes in two neighborhoods out of fear of debris flows.

But in southwestern Utah, a dam that authorities had feared was in imminent danger of giving way to floodwaters was found to be in stronger condition than previously believed, said Marc Mortensen, a spokesman for Washington County.

The roughly 800 residents of the towns of Virgin and Rockville were allowed to return to their homes Tuesday night, Mortensen said. Engineers will monitor the dam, located on the Virgin River, and conduct more tests on Wednesday, when high water flows are expected again, he said.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said he was prepared to declare a state of emergency in the south, where floodwaters also washed out at least one bridge. But as of Tuesday afternoon, Utah officials said the required benchmarks for an emergency declaration had not been reached, and Herbert hadn't received a request from local authorities to issue one.

"We are closely monitoring the activity in southern Utah, and praying for the safety of all of the area's residents," Herbert said in a statement from his office.

In Southern California, where the car is king, a record number of motorists called their local AAA to report dead batteries, a need for emergency tows and crashed vehicles, said spokesman Jeffrey Spring of the Automobile Club of Southern California.

More than 25,000 distraught motorists made calls for help on Monday, the largest number ever in a 24-hour period for the AAA's largest U.S. affiliate, Spring said.

"We're in Southern California, and we don't have a lot of experience driving in the rain, and some people drive through high puddles not realizing what kind of effect it can have on a car," Spring said. "If the engine gets splashed and gets wet, it can stop the car right there."

Spring said AAA was "able to serve the majority of members in 30 minutes," although he added, "I'm sure there were a number of people who had to wait longer than that."

Monday's call volume surpassed the prior record of about 22,000 on October 9, 2008, when a heat wave and the scorching Santa Ana winds disabled many automobiles, Spring said. Monday's weather -- torrential rains -- had opposite conditions, he said.

"Batteries are fickle things if they're not at full strength," Spring said. "Hot weather can affect them and weather like this."

In the southern Sierra Nevada, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks were effectively shut down Monday and Tuesday because flooding, mudslides and rockslides closed the two roads into the parks, said Brandy Frederich, assistant general manager of Wuksachi Lodge in Sequoia National Park.

In fact, the 102-room lodge was vacant Tuesday after the last couple of guests departed Monday, Frederich said.

"Well, we're all up here," Frederich said of the hotel staff. "We would be open if the road is open. It's gorgeous right now. Up here, it finally turned to snow."

But the rain at lower elevations washed out the two roads, she said.

Meanwhile, residents were keeping a nervous eye on hillsides, wary of the potential for mudslides.

Donna McLaughlin of La Canada Flintridge lost her home last year when a 10-foot wall of mud came barreling down a hillside. She just moved back in October.

"Here we go again," she told CNN affiliate KABC.

But this time, the city has bolted down protective concrete barriers and attached them to each other in the area in an effort to guard against mudslides. McLaughlin said the barriers were not bolted down or attached last year. "Had they done that, our house would have at least been saved," she told KABC.

Deborah Craigo, 39, who lives in the Mojave Desert community of Hesperia, California, said monsoon conditions have inundated the arid landscape.

Fire stations are even offering sandbags to residents who want to shore up defenses to their homes, said Craigo, who is also a CNN iReporter.

"It's been raining from two days ago and it just has not stopped. They closed a lot of the roads down," said Craigo, a mother and college student. "It's pretty bad now. We have a riverbed in back of our house, and two days ago it was completely bone dry. And then within two days the riverbed is completely full."

In Orange County, California, four hikers whose truck was stranded by floodwater between two canyon roads were airlifted out Tuesday morning and were reported to be doing well, CNN affiliate KTLA reported. The four had been stranded overnight. Five other people were rescued in the same area Monday evening, the station said. A bulldozer was used to help get them to safety, it said.

Elsewhere, 40 horses were rescued from Riverside County as water rose to heights of about 4 feet, affiliate KCAL reported.

The storm is actually a series of storms originating in the Pacific, known as the "Pineapple Express" because of their origin near the Hawaiian Islands. They have brought heavy snow to the higher elevations, with torrential rainfall in lower spots, and high winds. Total rainfall has approached 10 inches in some areas.

Numerous roads were closed because of mudslides or flooding. On Monday, nearly 2,000 residents near McFarland, about 40 miles north of Lamont, were evacuated because of what fire department spokesman Sean Collins called "major flooding." The evacuation order was later lifted after debris was cleared from a backed-up creek.

Meanwhile, as much as 13 feet of snow fell in the Sierra Nevada, according to CNN Meteorologist Rob Marciano.

"We get a lot of snow here, but not usually this much in a 24-hour period," said CNN iReporter Sarah Butner, who is visiting family in Mammoth Lakes, California. The area has received about 9 feet of snow, she said Monday.

"The decks have a good 5 feet of snow on them," she said. One area of the neighborhood was also flooded, she said.

In Arvin, California, near Lamont, Caliente Creek washed away land near one home. Hugo Figueroa, who lives there, said he and his family were told to evacuate, CNN affiliate KBAK reported. Flooding washed out several roads near Lamont and Arvin, the station reported.

High winds also whipped much of the state, particularly at high elevations. Peak wind gusts reached 152 mph in Alpine Meadows summit in northern California, the weather service reported.

Mudslides forced officials to close a portion of State Route 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, in Ventura County from just north of the Los Angeles County line to Oxnard, according to the California Department of Transportation. The Pacific Coast Highway was also closed north of Santa Barbara due to flooding.

A mudslide also closed a portion of State Route 41 in San Luis Obispo County. A stretch of State Route 34 in the Oxnard area was closed because of flooding.

The danger of mudslides will probably intensify, CNN meteorologist Ivan Cabrera said.

"A serious situation will develop now with the mudslide danger that will continue over the next several days," Cabrera said Monday.

Another danger: Falling trees. Erik Budzinski of Orange told CNN affiliate KABC he is heartsick after his vintage 1970 Ford F-150 truck was crushed by a large tree Monday night. "It was my baby," he said.

Budzinski said he was inside his home and heard the wood cracking and popping as the tree fell. "I just knew it," he said.

Still, many southern Californians were not deterred from holiday shopping by the rain, although the rain-slicked roads had led to thousands of accidents.

"It's a little scary to be driving with this much rain, but I'm going to deal with it," Adriena Young told KABC. "It's better than a drought."

Hey Everyone  ::MonkeyWink:: i was hoping to post a Christmas message on Christmas day but there is so much family here & so much happening I don't know if I'll be able to, so I'm doing it now, just in case! I love this board, it's a part of my life. I check in on different threads every day. I have to, it's like brushing my teeth or getting dressed, my day is not complete without it. I cannot wait for CA's trial to start in May, for me, i know it is going to be all consuming, & it will be here before you know it! I want justice for little Caylee and I also hope questions are answered for Zahra & Kyron(I saw his Mom on the news yesterday & it was heart-breaking)and all the others we follow. The Detroit Zoo got an early Christmas present this year, in the form of a small monkey seized from a Southfield home.

Southfield Police said they received a call on Dec. 6 that a family living on Spring River had a marmoset named Pearl in their home. For the most part, exotic or wild animals are illegal within city limits, and while appearing sweet-natured, marmosets can be aggressive.

Pearl, who had been living with the family for three years, came to Michigan via Florida. The family willingly turned over the small monkey, due to a possible move.

That is the cutest monkey I have ever seen. All that long hair or fur or whatever.

My Fibromyalgia stiffness and morning headaches have been helped. If I lived in an area that needed full time heat in the winter, I'd buy this for it cuts heating bills and gives you toasty toes, back et al. Dog likes it. MERIDIAN — The scene at a home at 788 Murphy Road late this afternoon was too much to take for even hardened investigators with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department. LCSD Chief Dep. Ward Calhoun said two investigators, after veiwing the unthinkable acts that led to the death of two adults and two children in an apparent murder-suicide, had to be relieved from duty after they tried to help process the scene. "They are fathers of small children themselves and this was just too much for them," said Calhoun. "It is hard on all of us especially this time of year." Sheriff Billy Sollie said the names of all those killed are being withheld. He said the two adults were the father and mother of the two children but were not married. Sollie said the father of the deceased male found the carnage around 4:30 p.m. when he came home from work. Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler placed the time of death around 7:30 a.m. today. Sollie said he was not prepared to say who did the actual shooting and would wait until the investigation had moved further before he released that information. Sollie said the father and his son lived at the home and it appeared the mother and children had just recently been living at the residence. Sollie said the mother's body was found in the living room while one of the children was found in the hallway. The father and the other child were found in a bedroom. Sollie said multiple shots had been fired from a gun that was recovered at the scene. Although there was clear evidence some of the victims had been shot, Sollie said all of the bodies were going to be transported to Jackson for autopsies to determine the exact cause of death. "This is just a terrible thing to happen anytime of the year but for it to be now makes it that much more difficult for this family and others," Sollie said.

IBE..... I've been holding on to my SM Christmas Cup too. Klaas did such a wonderful job with it. I've thought about Peaches many times over Christmas. I miss her dearly and hope her family is doing well.

I hope you're feeling better in no time and that the rain moves out quickly! It's been snowing here since late Christmas Eve. It's beautiful and I was thrilled to have a White Christmas. It's not bitterly cold, so I may try to shovel the driveway, and that would make it easier for me to really enjoy it. Christmas was good to me this year, I bought my own presents.

Day after Christmas was awfully cold and wet... not so many bargains.

Though I managed to buy these delicious reduced-price cookies in Walmart... the Knott's Berry Farm raspberry shortbread dipped in chocolates. The crumbs are all over my keyboard, but... they are yummy!

Good thing I only bought a can of them, or my diet would've been gone to ell!

Though, I'm thinking on going back later on today to see if there are any left over.

We brought this home the Saturday before Christmas. What was I thinking?

I have a handicapped son and a divorced daughter living with me, and my son wanted another chihuahua. We had one that passed away in 2001. They both work, so I am here with the animals. My daughter has a 12 lb. Pompoo that I hoped would adopt the puppy which, by the way, weighs 2lb. 4 oz. I must have been dreaming, Missy wants nothing to do with the puppy and hides all day.
On the other hand, I have a 20 lb (the last time we weighed him) Maine Coon Cat that loves him. They chase each other all over the house and when that cat starts running and jumping, it sounds like the house is falling down.

More than 200,000 people have been affected by relentless flooding in northeast Australia, with the flood zone now stretching over an area bigger than France and Germany combined, officials said Friday.

Thousands of homes and businesses across Queensland state have been inundated with water after days of pounding rain caused swollen rivers to overflow. The entire population of two towns was forced to evacuate as water swamped their communities, cutting off roads and devastating crops.

Heavy rains and flooding in northeast Australia is common during the southern hemisphere summer, but the scope of the damage from the recent downpours is extremely unusual, Queensland state Premier Anna Bligh said.

"This is without a doubt a tragedy on an unprecedented scale," Bligh told Australian Broadcasting Corp. "We now have 22 towns or cities that are either substantially flooded or isolated because the roads have been cut off to them. That represents some 200,000 people spanning an area that's bigger than the size of France and Germany combined."

Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes this week. In the central Queensland town of Emerald, around 1,000 people were evacuated in the last 24 hours.

The town was facing the prospect of food shortages, power outages and sewage-contaminated floodwaters, county mayor Peter Maguire said. Three evacuation centers have been set up to help displaced residents.

Weather across most of the state was drier on Friday, but river levels were still rising in some areas as high waters worked their way toward the ocean. Bligh warned that drenched communities could be stuck under water for more than a week, and clean up efforts were expected to cost billions of dollars.

Queensland launched a disaster relief fund for flood victims with 1 million Australian dollars ($1 million) in state money. Prime Minister Julia Gillard pledged to match that amount with federal funds.

Gillard was touring flooded communities on Friday.

John's sick, My son and future DIL are in Nashville, and that means I got to take care of Rudy, Hammer, (John's dogs), Bubba, (My son's BIG dog) and KuBear tonight!   ::MonkeyEek::

First, let me introduce you to Rudy and Hammer.......  cute little dogs........ high energy and smart. Pics all taken with my cell phone, so not the best quality.

THEN, there's BUBBA!!   ::MonkeyShocked:: He's a Bull Mastiff and HUGE! He thinks he's a lap dog. He doesn't want to be WITH you, he wants to be ON you! I ended up having to cross paths with all the dogs at one point tonight. Now, KuBear, my Shar Pei, is a real sweetie, BUT she's not exactly enthused with Rudy and Hammer. Therefore, I ended up putting her and Bubba in my bedroom for about 20 minutes and shutting the door. When I closed the door, my bed was made, my lampshades were straight, and I actually had blinds attached to the window frames.   :roll:

I can't imagine what crept in, because when I opened the door there were these two angels just sitting in this unexplained mess!   ::MonkeyShocked::

I guess I should be glad there was no blood anywhere and that Rudy and Hammer lived through the visit!  ::MonkeyDance::

Michael left Thursday.............. and man, am I ready for him to come home!!! I've tried everything, but in the end, KuBear always sleeps with me, and Bubba won't sleep unless his big 'ole head is LAYING on me, so believe it or not, add me to that picture and you'll know why I'm still up at 6:00am!

When Bubba's not here, Ku just curls up at the foot of the bed. She gets more possesive when he's around and wants up at the head of the bed. Bubba just wants ON me! He plunked that big head down on my thigh last night, and I woke up thinking my leg had been amputated! I couldn't feel it, my foot, or my toes!  He's SUCH A BABY!! Over the last few days, I have backed up and installed Windows7 on x1 PC and x1 laptop .  Now it's time to do my MAIN PC.  In the process of backing up everything now and am currently working off the laptop.  I've already backed up my emails and address book and found registration keys for all downloaded programs.  Trying not to forget anything. 

The old PC my husband will use mostly foe iTunes and his new iPod.  The sound card didn't work but I found an external usb soundcard for $10 that works great!  So my husband is all set!  ::dogwag::

My youngest picked out yarn a few years ago (yes I said years) and I started making her smallish blanket. I was talking to my oldest daughter on the phone and my size guesstimate while talking was off by a yard or 10, by the time I finish it, it will be able to double as a house tarp-it's HUGE!!! lol

I got Windows7 for 3 PC's as my Christmas gift from my husband.  I have uploaded on all 3 now.   ::MonkeyCool::

I just got a new laptop and it has Windows7. I had Vista before and it was a royal pain..I had to replace my printer because they didn't have drivers for Vista and I was concerned about ANY Windows up date. But so far so good.

I thought Windows 7 was the one giving everyone such headaches on here with their screen jumping and such. Have they improved it?

When you say backing up are you using an external hard drive, or moving the programs or info from one PC to the next, or is it part of the process in downloading Windows 7?  If and when we can buy a new computer, there is stuff on this old one we'd like to save.  I know that some programs will be lost because we don't have the software.  Web based mail or photo storage should be okay, I would think...like yahoo, hotmail, photobucket, etc. 

The way I understand it Vista to Windows7 is pretty clear cut you run a simple upgrade with the disc and your old files and programs are saved.  Unfortunately, I had XP on all 3.  With XP you have to do a complete reinstallation so to speak and you need to backup everything you want to save.  Luckily for me I didn't have anything I needed to save on the old PC or the laptop.  On my main PC I backed up everything to my external drive.  First I had to take everything off my external drive (41g of stuff) and move to my PC.  Then I had to reformat my external to NTSF from FAT32. Then I had to move the 41g of files back.  Then I made a copy of my emails and my address book and put that on the external.  It was at that point I did the full backup and put it on the external.  Then I unplugged the external.

That's when I ran the Windows7 disc on thisi PC.  I still have a couple files to get back on this PC, Photoshop is the one I'm missing the most.  I have an old Photoshop disc but my son is going to send me new. ::MonkeyCool::

A friend mentioned last week that his daughter bought a web cam for their computer at Radio Shack.  It was supposed to be XP compatible, but when they tried, it said they had to upgrade.  Not sure what the specifics were, but he was perfectly happy with returning it, since he really didn't want her to be using it anyway.  There is so much the average user doesn't know. 

Example:  A cousin and her husband needed a new computer and let their SIL order it from Dell.  They were telling us a month ago that they had to keep calling the help desk for this and that, and also couldn't open any attachments in their email.  They were complaining that the tech told them they had to buy software.  I guessed right away that the SIL didn't think of this when he ordered the PC.  They are truly computer ignorant.  I told her that someday when we visit I would take a look at what they had on it.  Not sure when that will happen.  They just read and forward email, play games and use the internet.  They had no idea that documents, powerpoint, pictures, etc. need a program to open them. 

Although I've been removed from the work experience for quite some time that built my computer skills , I am still grateful to have had the opportunity to learn and continue to learn things from others or just from reading.

I like the idea of repurposing the sweater and making it into slippers.  I don't care for sweaty slippers either.  The only concern I have for the slippers here is how to make them non-skid?  I have hardwood floors and tile and even walking around in just socks could cause a mishap.... 

There are a few suggestions for non-skid bottoms in the comments at the link, MuffyBee.  I had the same thought, but the suggestions seem reasonable and not too difficult.

Monkeys know all so I'm looking for advice......... on cleaning a marble floor. YUK!!

I'm moving to Mom's house next month. Well, it's actually mine now, but it will always be Mom and Dad's. There's a marble foyer that was always a big deal to clean when I was growing up. Mom always had it stripped once a year....... I think with something like Comet or Ajax........ maybe even rinsed with an ammonia dilution. It was a hard job, done on knees with a lot of elbow grease. After it was stripped and thoroughly rinsed cleaned, I know she had several coats of an acrylic sealer put on, called "Future". It was liquid and clear, and man, did the floor shine after it dried! It was just evenly applied with a soft cloth. The floor is Tennessee pink marble (if you've ever been to the Capitol building in Washington, they used it there too) and just beautiful when it's well maintained. She had a buffer that was easy to use (my job growing up), that kept it in great shape until it was time to strip again.

It's been years and years since the floor has been well tended and it's dull and scratched. I want to get it back to the way it looked. I'll be doing it myself, but haven't seen "Future" in years, and am not 100% sure of what was used to strip it. I threw out Mom's buffer when she died. It still ran, but you could no longer buy the replacement pads.

Anybody got any ideas?

OMG! I just googled pink formica and here it is!! Anybody remember this? I just searched and found this site with suggestion about the stripping of the marble.  Gosh, iirc, Future was a wax/polish that was used on flooring before the 'no wax' tiles were sold.  I remember using it.  The site does still mention having to buff the marble more than once to smooth it out.  Maybe you can rent one....I know that could be an expense.

My MIL used to clean some local banks years ago and I helped her at the one closest to our home.  At the time, there was a stone or slate flooring at the counter area.  We vacuumed and mopped it regularly, but when the finish got dull, we'd apply some kind of sealer that was made specifically for that kind of surface.  I'm sure you might be able to find something at Home Depot or Lowes.  It smelled but looked beautiful when dry.

Maybe you could try a steam mop.  I have one and I do my floors all the time with it and the shine is unreal.  Steam really cleans up any mess on my floors and I would not go back to a regular mop or down on my  knees cleaning.

Just absolutely adorable.  Look at that face and smile.  I love it.

I don't have marble floors, but I have 17" tiles, and I use a bucket of water with about 1/2 cup of  white vinegar in it to clean with.  I had tried other cleaners, but it left a light haze and I had to rinse.  Not with the vinegar water.  It leaves a light shine and the vinegar smell goes away.  The white vinegar is good because it also works to discourage mold or bacteria growth, not to mention that it's cheap.

For the marble, I wouldn't use any kind of wax like Future.  There are different sealers that can be bought from Home Depot, Lowe's or even a tile company.  Maybe call a tile installation company and ask for product advice for diy.  Or, the good old web.  However, I've seen things on the web that aren't always so great... JMHO   I have granite countertops that came "sealed' and I use a cleaner/conditioner on them, but have read they need to be sealed every couple of years.

I have marble shower and floor in a bathroom..It was sealed. I hope that I don't have to have a lot of maintenance with it! was told that marble does scratch easily.so keep that in mind when you clean it with certain cleaners that could be abrasive... it is so pretty, but I hope that it won't require me to do special things to it!  cause I am rather lazy..

Cookie, I use the Shark steam mop.  Most important thing to do before you use the steam mop is make sure you vacuum up the floor really good.  They now make a Shark steam mop/vac so it vacuums up and then steam the floor all at the same time.   I personally would not pay the extra money for a vac and then mop but that's just me.  Yes the steam mop does all kinds of floors.  My kitchen and bathrooms floor are so clean and they shine when it drys which is almost immediately.  Like I said I would never go back to the regular mop or getting down on my knees to clean.

Of course, I am partial to "Indiana" limestone. CBB, Heard pink was the "in" color for this year, but sure do understand how "disturbing" a pink kitchen could be. I read somewhere that red is supposed to make you eat more. Wonder if pink means the color helps loose weight? Pink and black was very big in the 50's. Going down the color scale then that would mean while means starving and lots of people have white kitchens and don't starve  ::MonkeyKiss::

My suspicion is that there is still a residual of the "future" on the floor, so I guess that the first order of business is to figure out how to strip everything off of it. That stuff never did come off easily! Yeah, IBE, it really is pretty marble; a rich mixture of pink and gray and when treated as it should be, it almost has depth. There's lots and lots that's pretty discouraging about the house that I'm just going to have to adjust to until I can find the funds to change, so making that floor pretty again is a real spirit lifter for me! I'll post some pictures when I get moved........... it will be like a stroll down memory lane; kind of a cross between the Brady Bunch, Green Acres and Leave It To Beaver!  ::MonkeyHaHa::

One cup of ammonia in one gallon hot water will strip the Future ( wax ) from the floor. I purchased a buffer from Oreck and love it ! Be careful with the ammonia fumes and ventilate the area while you work if possible.

This post is in regards to SINUS FLUSHING (ahhh yes, glamorous!).  But it's that time of year, the time where either it's warm/cold/warm/cold, or we're stuck inside, or people are just having colds/sinus issues, and this really does come in handy.

I had been telling some sniffly-monkeys about a time when I had a sinus infection for at least a month.  I usually have had allergies, but this was really bad.  I couldn't seem to do anything to fix it - not antibiotics, not patience, and it was at the point where I was beginning to have a horrible smell in my sinuses.  It was a nightmare.

On the advice of my aunt, who is and has been a huge advocate for "nasal irrigation" for ages, I broke down and bought a "neti pot" to flush my sinuses.

Neti pots have been around for ages; certain cultures swear by nasal irrigation, for cleansing and health benefits, and now I know why!  Usually the water is tepid, and it is a mixture of water and a special salt that you mix to make a saline mixture that is close to the salinity of our own mucous membranes.  I believe it's slightly MORE saline, which helps to kill fungus and excessive bacteria in our sinuses that are the culprits of our problems.  I have found that it seems to help reduce stuffiness and inflammation of my nasal passages.

And how about that sinus infection?  Well it kicked it's tush!  The problem was finally gone within a week.  I have used it since (just in case that was a fluke) any time I have any bad nasal irritation, severe allergies, etc and it continues to work as it did the first time.  I really should use it more often, preventatively.  Maybe that can be a new-year's resolution for me!  :)

As for the "equipment", you can now easily find "neti pots" at most of your local Walgreens, etc, and even little batches of the packets for saline.  You may be able to find alternatives online for frugality.  I don't know why you couldn't use a baby's ear syringe, for example.

The first time you do it, I'll admit - it is just weird and a little horrible.  Basically, you are pouring water in one side of your nose and, with your head tilted at a very specific angle* the water goes through your sinuses, breaking up and moisturing stuff, into the other side of your nose and out into a sink.  Again, the salinity of the water has a bit of an antiseptic effect without damaging the GOOD bacteria in your nose that help us from getting skin infections and yeast infections in our skin/nose.  I feel that maybe the salinty of the water also helps draw out a little inflammation, but that is conjecture at this point - I'd have to research.

I got my husband the neti pot this evening...he said that it helped..I told him to use it every day for at least a week..he tends to stop using something once it works the first time...he never listens to me but perhaps he will this time since he is so miserable..with this neti pot, the mixture came with it...easy to mix and use..

Had a doctor's appt. last week and mentioned that the only problem I had was sinus congestion. He gave me a brochure of something similar to a neti pot I guess. Said it was the best thing he had ever found and he used it regularly.
It's called NeilMed Sinus Rinse. It comes with an 8 oz bottle, cap, Fifty regular premixed packets and an Educational Brochure. SRP is $11.49.
I think with a neti pot, you have to buy the packets separately. I know 50 sounds like a lot, so don't know which would be the best buy.

hubs tried the netipot last night and this morning and he says that it worked really well! he was happy with the results which is fab!

Cookie, I think they both use the same rinse. If you already have the Neti Pot I wouldn't get the other one. I just remember seeing the Neti Pot in Wally World and didn't think it came with any saline packets. I admit, I wasn't really paying that much attention at the time.

My mom and son both use the Neilmed Sinus Rinse.  They buy a box of saline packet refills by Neilmed, with 100 packets.  These packets could be used for the Neti pot too  ::MonkeyWink::  Mom and son have both have had sinus surgery and struggled with allergies and such, and they have found using the Neilmed on a daily basis when their allergies are in high season is helpful.  It rinses out the allergens and etc.

I have bad allergies and get sinus infections and ear infections. I use Little Noses Sterile Saline Nasal Mist. It is for babies and little kids, and it is a mist that goes up each nostril. Since I can't stand anything that goes up my nose, this works the best for me. But the main thing, and the best thing I ever purchased, a humidifier. Since the humidifier I have not had any infections. It is dry in CA where I live, but even if you live in a climate with a brutal winter, by having your furnace on, it dries out the air in your house.

I have used the NeilMed Sinus Rinse for about 10 months.  Not one sinus headache, no sinus infections . . . I am now off my allergy pills for the first time in about 15 years.  I use it twice a day . . . morning and evening.  I highly recommend it.  The couple of times I went away and forgot to pack it and could feel the pressure building again.  I went right to a drug store and bought a new one.  I now buy the packets in the 100 box.  My nephew uses one and now my Mom does too.

I was thinking of getting the Neilmed sinus rinse for hubs to take when he travels and when he is at work instead of taking the netipot with him...more compact..
will be anxious to speak with him later today to see how his sinuses are doing since he flew today...

My niece went into labor and got to the hospital before the blizzard started. She just gave birth to Baby Boy -- Gavin Robert -- I have no idea what she will use for a last name, lmao...long story, but she does know who the father is and lives with him, but doesn't want to anymore, lol) So now she has Walker James who is 5 and Gavin Robert. 6 lbs. /  8 oz.   21" long with long black hair and long finger and toenails lol. She's 33 and will have her tubes tied before leaving the hospital. WTG Jaime Lynn!

You know, when I bought my last Neti pot, the pharmacy (Walmart) had a little jar of loose powder, instead of the packets.  But honestly - the packets have a huge shelf date, and you'll be glad to have them if you can get them.  I'm glad to see you all trying this, and to hear of someone else who had luck with it.  It really is a great way to do things, and helps me because I don't have to use as many antihistamines, and decongestants, and other things that just seem to muddle my already muddled brain!  LOL

p.s.  And sorry it took me so long to reply - just catching up reading, backwards.  We had some cold weather drop down on us here, and so I had to go get more shavings for the horse stalls, extra blankets for them, tarp up the chicken room's wire wall in the barn hallway, etc etc.  It's a good few hour's work, but once everything is done it's SO snuggly and wonderful in the barn!  Phew!

Anyway, I'm really glad to hear that the neti pot and rinses are already helping.  I love them, after that first one.  :)

New information could help police crack a missing persons case dating back to 1985.

On Wednesday, they announced someone walked into the State Police Barracks and gave police perhaps the most promising tip they've received yet in the investigation into what happened to Cherrie Mahan.

Eight-year-old Mahan disappeared Feb. 22, 1985 after she got off the school bus on Cornplanter Road in Winfield Township, Butler County.

She was never seen again.

This last storm didn't leave as much snow as the first here in our area (about 6 inches).  I think San may have been hit harder...not sure.  Today, I have to go out and clear snow from the oil tank so that the delivery guy can fill it tomorrow.  Not looking forward to it, but everyone else is working and it's got to be done.  It's pretty cold and windy.

My wonderful neighbor gave me a pair of homemade mittens.  I put the mitten's on my feet, they are so wonderfully comfortable.
I am not kidding.  LOL, I do not what to do with the loose thumbs on my feet, I will probably stitch them, so I don't look freaky:)
The slipper mittens are more like Booties, very comfortable.  I was really going through my sweater, and rediscovered the mitten's.
If you have extra homemade mitten's, like most of us have, try putting on your feet, nice and warm and surprisely comfortable.

Nonesuche - as far as I know you are the only one who had to change their password.  The update that was done the other night was maintenance by the server company and nothing we did to the forum software.  It should not have cause anything like making anyone change their password.  So, I have no idea what caused your problem.

Klaas when I try to input the new password twice (using IE this time and not firefox), it did ask me my secret question and allow me to set a new password just as it did yesterday. So I reset the password and was able to sign in finally.

It's possible for whatever reason it is one of those AOL problems that would come up every once in a while ages ago.  I don't know what to tell you.  I just hope everything is OK in the future.

To snag any of the smilies or any other picture for that matter, all you have to do is right click on the image and save as to a folder or even your desktop. You can open a photobucket account for free. Then you can download the images or .gifs to it. It is pretty easy to do. Just hit the download file on the photobucket login and you can browse your file or desktop and download them. From that, view your album, select the picture you want. Below you will see several boxes. You want to click on the bottom box that says IMG and it will say copied. Go to your post and click where you want it to be. Right click and paste and it will automatically post it with all the img brackets. Preview to see if it is what you want. I know it sounds complicated, but it isn't. January 19, 2011 (WABC) -- A remarkable story unfolding tonight in the Bronx, where a 23-year-old woman, stolen from a hospital room in Harlem when she was just three weeks old, tonight is with her parents.

Her name is Carlina White, although she was raised as Nejdra Nance in Bridgeport, Connecticut. How she finally found her parents is an amazing story, an emotional journal that started when Carlina, doubting her connection to the people who raised her, searched the web and found a picture of a missing little girl that looked just like she did in the pictures her supposed parents had taken of her when she was a baby.

She then contacted a national missing children's group, and earlier this month the connection with the parents was made. They met for the first time this past weekend. And tonight, she's coming home. Finally, after 23 years. As for the people who took her, they're looking for them. And what of the people who raised her? And how did they get her? No formal charges have been filed. Yet. Sundance Review: 'Project Nim'

PARK CITY, UTAH - If you know me, or if you're a regular reader, you may be aware that I dig monkeys. I'm a sucker for greeting cards with monkeys, stuffed monkeys and, under the right circumstances, I enjoy a good monkey-driven piece of cinema.

At this moment, though, I'm feeling a bit guilty for my simian fascination and I'm definitely regretting any jokes I might have made about someday dreaming of having my own monkey-butler.
 
I can't guarantee that the guilt will last very long. At the Sundance Film Festival, you never lack for films to generate guilt and I may have turned my attentions to the environment, the Middle East or gender repression by the time you read the review.
 
But in this moment, I'm all too aware that it's hard out there for a chimp.
 
If that were the only message of James Marsh's new documentary "Project Nim," that would probably be enough. But Marsh's follow-up to the Oscar-winning "Man on Wire" is more than just a story about the way humans treat animals, the way we express our power over the weak and the way we impress human values upon creatures who have no use for or understanding of our particular version of domestication.
 
"Project Nim" is a gripping animal biopic that takes audiences on a journey that begins with laugher, amusement and bemusement and ends, at least in the case of several viewers around me, with tears. It's a gracefully crafted documentary and I suspect it will play well for audiences on a variety of levels.
 
More thoughts on "Project Nim" after the break...
 
"Project Nim" begins in 1973 with Columbia Professor Herbert Terrace's idea to bring up a chimpanzee in an exclusively human environment, to raise the chimp as a child, teach the chimp to use sign language and to generally push the extremes of the "nurture" side of the "nature vs. nurture" argument. To that end, Herb took Nim away from his mother as an infant and moved him into a ritzy Upper West Side apartment to be brought up by Stephanie LaFarge as part of her already unsteady blended family.
 
The study is scientifically flawed on a number of levels, but the major problem is that with media-obsessed absentee Herb and anything-goes, no-limits hippie Stephanie, Nim was cursed with the unsteadiest background imaginable for human development. As Nim gets passed from one surrogate parent to another, gets moved from one home to another, watches one teacher after another depart for reasons stemming from human inconstancy and frailty, he responds in a way similar to how any confused product of a broken home would respond. There's certainly a layer of "Project Nim" that's about the way humans parent their own children.
 
Except that Nim isn't a child. He's a chimp and much of "Project Nim" focuses on the bafflement expressed by a team of supposedly educated people when they realize that a young chimp might not develop in the same way as a young child.
 
The first third of "Project Nim" is quite funny. Nim was an adorable little chimp and no matter how puerile it may sound, if somebody shows you a chimpanzee in a leisure suit, you're going to laugh.
 
But more of the laughter comes from the sheer folly that all involved brought to this project. Marsh has all of the principles from the project available for on-camera interviews and their lack of self-awareness, more than 30 years after the project began, is astounding. They're an amazing assortment of characters, starting with Professor Terrace, who barely blinks in admitting his tendency to hire attractive assistants and eventually bed them, setting a backdrop of sexual promiscuity that would contribute to the instability of Nim's upbringing. We also chuckle, at least for a while, at LaFarge's embarrassingly laissez faire approach to parenting her new "child" and a level of anthropomorphizing that goes from inoffensively silly (the aforementioned monkey leisure suit) to eventually dangerous.
 
Watching "Project Nim," I repeatedly flashed back to Werner Herzog's "Grizzly Man," another film about the sad consequences of reading a whole catalogue of human behaviors onto a wild animal simply because of isolated familiar traits. There are obvious differences that contribute to making "Project Nim" even more tragic in places. To begin with, Tim Treadwell was a dilettante, while the folks associated with Project Nim were empirically brilliant, even if it didn't show in their execution. Also, you don't have to believe in evolution to recognize that chimpanzees are a lot more like people than bears are, so the anthropomorphizing is easier to understand, but its consequences are as well. And finally, speaking of consequences, if you slip up around a mammoth bear, the bear will just eat you. If you screw up a juvenile chimp, the chimp is the one likely to get hurt.
 
[Oddly, as often as I thought about "Grizzly Man," I thought even more frequently about "Gremlins." People like to start with something cute and we like to think that because we can read love in big watery eyes and a few reassuring speech-like communications and then when animals become animalistic, we get confused. We're not ready for mogwai and we're probably not ready for monkey either. If the first half of "Project Nim" is about treating a chimp as a child, the second half is about how you handle a chimp who has been raised as a child, but remains a chimp.]
 
Marsh combines his awkwardly honest talking heads with an amazing wealth of archival footage, both images and home movies, of Nim's upbringing. And where there were gaps in available resources, Marsh has inserted bridging reenactments that never feel jarring. Edited by Jinx Godfrey, "Project Nim" plays as a biopic, simultaneously anthropomorphizing Nim with an ever-so-human emotional arc, while never failing to acknowledge the impossibilities of truly understanding the feelings and motivations of its main character. Because of that "You think you know, but you really can't possibly know" undercurrent, Nim's life plays out in a series of unexpected twists, even as Marsh uses traditional elements like sex, drugs and abuse to form the structure.
 
The actual Project Nim was about trying to understand the things that go on in the mind of a chimp. But Marsh knows that his hero can't sit down for an interview of his own, so "Project Nim" the documentary is about trying to understand the things that go on in the mind of people. In that respect, it's actually similar to "Man on Wire," which looked at tightrope walker Philippe Petit and said "What on Earth would make a man want to do that?" With "Man on Wire," Marsh found an enchanting answer. With "Project Nim," Marsh found only a string of confounding questions.
 
It's an intriguing conceit and the execution pushes all manner of emotional buttons. "Project Nim" was a great way to kick off the Sundance Film Festival.

 :2ukli: I have to vent! I have seen where some Monkeys were talking about knitting, crochet and such. I am in the process of making a pair of red wool socks. The wool is very fine, expensive, non-scratchy and wonderful to work with. I have made socks many times using four double pointed needles. I made a pair last year. The only difference is these needles are much smaller and the yarn is finer gauge.

The pattern I have says "intermediate" and I think I am there and probably higher. I have knitted since I was a teenager. But I have had soooooooo much trouble with this pattern and have taken out as many stitches as I have knitted. I keep loosing count, dropping stitches, and it's really not the pattern but me. I am feeling so frustrated with it now I feel like throwing the whole thing in the fireplace. I am now going to have to take out two rows to correct a mistake. It is in a place I can't fudge. God only knows what is going to happen when I get to the part to turn the heel.

I have gone in my bedroom by myself, with not TV, radio, laptop or music just to concentrate. And still I am making mistakes, stupid mistakes. I have put the knitting down for a while when I get frustrated, and have even knitted when I am the freshest. I should have a sock made by now and started on the other one. I might have four inches done.

Usually I find knitting very soothing and relaxing. I like the repetitive nature of it, and it usually turns into mindless work. WTH is going on? I don't expect anyone to respond to this, I just needed to vent!

Sure! I can tell you exactly how to make Pasta................ nothing to it! You buy a box of Pasta. You put on reading glasses so you can read the directions on the box. You boil a lot of salted water and pour in the Pasta from the box. Cooking time is on the box, but if it's been a bad day, just sling some pieces on the wall and when they stick, it's done! If the pieces bounce off the wall and sound like plastic when they hit, you've forgotten to boil them first, but the dogs will love you as the gobble them off the floor!!    :smt040

Me, too, but my hubby's grandmother & mine used to make homemade ravioli and I remember watching my Aunt and her mother making pasta in their kitchen.  That is something I have never thought to attempt.  They used to hang them on lines to dry, so to speak.  Eating them was more memorable.  Yum.

amaranthblossom -  If you've been here for a couple of years reading, did you notice that the emoticons that are at Scared Monkeys were created not so much to be works of art, but were sometimes created for situations and are/were greatly enjoyed and used often.  The people (friends here)  that created the emoticons, including Klaasend, CBB and Brandi are highly regarded for their time and efforts not only for creating emoticons, but for their kindness and helpful ways with others that include members here and for the missing and exploited.  It's one thing to offer help, but it's another thing to put down others while you're doing so.  I initially wrote a fairly scathing post to you, but I backed it off, thinking maybe you just posted without thinking.  I gave you a chance to rethink your post and it didn't seem to make a difference.  You said you wanted to "help out here", and I think maybe you're the one that needs some help.  You need to brush up on your forum etiquette. (That's manners, btw)   Thank you for your backhanded offer to upgrade our emoticons, but no thanks.  I think we should just keep them, along with the good monkeys that created them.  jmho  ::bee::

I just wanted to add that Klaas has made the vast majority of the emoticons and is the ORIGINAL artist on the forum. She actually lives here and just visits California to check in on hubby and Petey!   ::MonkeyDance::

Because she always has her fingers on the pulse of the forum, she's been able to whip out exactly what emoticons posters need and want and she's full of wonderful surprises with them too!

 I have been using a combination of both. I will stop if you say so. It is no reflection on the ones you've made. I've just got a big collection of smileys and I think they are cute and funny.. Ahh, so that is actually their buttocks, LOL.  Those monkeys look like they might be in pain.  I would hate to have them for derrieres.  Mine is not that slender either, but it still fits in my pants. 

Actually I think they are supposed to be quite attractive to the opposite sex in the Baboon world.  Thankfully mine still fit in my pants too, but I have to admit sitting here at the computer since the Caylee case, it has widened a bit. If I was completely truthful more than a bit.  ::piggy::

there was another missing girl on NG tonight..she was 14 and was taken out of her bedroom..am not sure what her name was..they have already found her body at a cemetary.  a young boy has been arrested.

E! examines how four women went down the path to murder when the “E! Entertainment Special:  When Women Kill” premieres Wednesday, January 26 at 10pm ET/PT only on E!

The disappearance of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu from her Tracy, California home in 2009 gripped the nation.  This E! special takes a close look at former Sunday School teacher Melissa Huckaby - Sandra’s neighbor and mother of a 5-year-old herself – who eventually admitted to kidnapping and murdering Sandra.  Huckaby’s own mother and aunt, who continue to support Melissa, spoke with E!  They share the experience of having two families shaken to the core by Huckaby’s actions, and the fact that she was diagnosed with a mental illness only after she was in police custody.  Ultimately, Huckaby avoided the death penalty, though she will spend the rest of her life in prison for murdering Sandra Cantu.

The special features three other tragic stories of death and destruction from seemingly happy wives and mothers.


Susan Wright was a young stay-at-home mother of two from Texas who stabbed her husband Jeffery 193 times before burying his body in a shallow grave at their home.  Wright later admitted to the killing as an act of self defense after suffering years of domestic abuse.

She was convicted of murder and initially given 25 years in prison, although her sentence was reduced to 20 years, after an appeal.

E! presents viewers with testimony and footage from the trial, along with insight from all attorneys involved.

Andrea Petrosky is the subject of another tragic story.  She was a wife mother of two who grew up in rural Virginia plagued by depression and incapacitating migraines.

In a phone interview with E!, Petrosky talks about being an unhappy child despite being brought up in a loving home, and the unchecked mental illness that led her to have marital affairs, and attempt suicide twice—all before committing the horrifying act of violence that landed her in prison in 2006.

In addition, viewers will hear the chilling 911 call Petrosky made, in which she admitted to killing her only son.  Petrosky speaks with E! about her life in prison, and where her relationship stands with her, now adult, surviving daughter.  We also go behind bars to hear from Elizabeth Romero, a mother of eight children who was convicted of solicitation of capital murder and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

YW cookie.  Sandra Cantu's  abduction and murder was horrible and it was a woman that was responsible of course.    So often the first thought when a child is suspected of being abducted would be to look to a male as the suspect, particularly one with a previous offense.  Sandra Cantu's case changed that.  And of course, there are some cases where a female was used to lure another female, (whether adult or child) to a male to be assaulted.  Or what I've realized is just because the person near your child is a female doesn't necessarily mean safe.  I admit, I would tend to trust a female more than I would a male around my child, but who knows anymore?   ::MonkeyNoNo::  JMHO

If you recall MH was being treated for a mental disorder back when she was 12 years old if I recall correctly. Also the judge who sentenced her during the trial prior to her killing Sandra had asked for a court ordered evaluation. I can't help but feel this family was in deep denial about her and helped sheltered her and now I feel they are sheltering themselves.

I love the shark on my hard floor surfaces..not sure about one for the carpets though..we had a Bissel before and it worked well...but we haven't used one for awhile..

Sweetheart Pie

8 ounce package cream cheese
1 cup icing sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
8 ounce container Coolwhip thawed
9 inch prepared Oreo or chocolate graham cracker crust
16 ounce can cherry pie filling

With electric mixer beat the cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla until smooth.  Gently fold in the Coolwhip.  Spread on bottom of pie crust.  Top with cherry pie filling. Refrigerate 1 hour before cutting.

My son made pasta with his Grandmother, it is well worth making it yourself, the results are heavenly.

I agree but I have to confess everytime I think of that wild turkey chasing you to the bus I bust San. I would have been terrified too but the turkey looks so funny on the run, it just makes your experience more hysterical  ::MonkeyHaHa::
