Somer Renee Thompson - Missing 7-Year-Old Girl

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- Clay County sheriff's deputies are searching an Orange Park neighborhood for a girl who they said has been missing since Monday afternoon.

Deputies said 7-year-old Somer Renee Thompson was last seen in the Grove Park neighborhood. They said the girl's mother called police and said her daughter never returned home from school.

She is described as 3 feet, 5 inches tall and 65 pounds with brown hair in a pony tail. She was last seen wearing a cranberry-colored jumpsuit with pink striped sleeves.

Deputies said the girl was last seen at 2:45 p.m. walking home from Grove Park Elementary School near West Gano Avenue and Debarry Avenue with her sister and friends but separated from them running toward her home.

Deputies said the girl's mother was outside in the neighborhood looking for the child when she flagged down a passing deputy and reported the incident.

The family lives in the 1700 block of Horton Drive in Orange Park.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or the CCSO non-emergency line at 904-264-6512.

Do we have anymore information yet? Like did her sister go home directly after her or did she go to the friends house? How long was it before the mom flagged down the police? How close to her house was she when she took off running?

Yes, that seems like a long time to wait to me also.

I checked and there is not a live feed for Clay County scanner.

Maybe they were latch key kids and maybe the sister went home with the friends and the mom came home from work and found that she was not there? They haven't said yet but I would think that she would have them call and check in when they got home each day? Most parents do that...

I wonder if there are any stores or anything with cameras in the area that might have caught anything on tape? I hope that if there are they get them quick some of these stores have digital taping and start over every 24 hours....

Unfortunately, there is not one for Clay County on that site we use.

"We would ask that the public assist us in providing any information that anyone may have about this little girl's whereabouts," Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said. "Anyone that's in this vicinity, please be vigilant, be looking, search around the area and call us if you saw anything."

Beseler said deputies are contacting the 53 sexual offenders who live in the area as part of their investigation. More than 100 deputies, police and SWAT members were searching for the girl Monday night.

Yikes I looked at the map and Clay County is the next county over from Putman,that is frightening.

"Her mother began looking for her, and after about two hours, [she] flagged down a patrol car and reported that Somer did not come home this afternoon," said Clay County Sheriff Rick Beesler.

She is the same age as one of my girls and looks similar to her too.  I hope they find her soon.

So her mom knew around 3:00 ::MonkeyEek:: FTLOG, I wonder why people would wait for that long when it's a small child. I can see a teenager being late and worrying sick, but mine knows she better answer her phone or else I'll go find her ::MonkeyDevil2:: but a 2nd grader -I'd have been on the phone ASAP and worrying about causing a fuss later if I found her at a neighbors etc.

How long does it take to get from where haleigh went missing to where somer went missing? I am just curious. If anyone knows

The Clay County Sheriff's Office is searching for 7-year-old Somer Renee Thompson. Authorities were called when she didn't come home from Grove Park Elementary School on Monday.

The child is described as a white female, 3-feet 5-inches tall, 65 pounds, brown hair in ponytail. Officials say she was last seen wearing a cranberry-colored jumpsuit with pink striped sleeves. She was also carrying a pink, black and white-colored backpack, with hearts and skull-and-cross bones.

Somer was last seen at 2:45pm, walking home from school near West Gano Avenue and Debarry Avenue. Investigators say she was with her sister and friends, but after reportedly getting into a fight, she separated from them, running ahead towards her home on Horton Drive in Orange Park. Her mother was outside in the neighborhood looking for the child when she flagged down a passing deputy and reported the incident.

Deputies are searching a three-mile area with close to 100 officials and K-9s. Anyone with information is asked to call 9-1-1 or the Clay County Sheriff's Office non-emergency line at 904-264-6512.

Somer Renee Thompson was last seen wearing a cranberry colored jumpsuit with pink-striped sleeves.  She is 3-foot-5, weighs 65 pounds abd has brown hair in a pony tail.

She was walking home from Grove Park Elementary near West Gano Avenue and Debarry Avenue with her sister and friends but separated from them about 2:45 p.m. The child lives about a mile from the school.

Sheriff Rick Beseler said she might have hit another child with her backpack during an argument and run off. He said it's possible she might have run to a friend's house because she was afraid of getting in trouble. But the amount of time she's been missing is making investigators nervous. ::MonkeyConfused::

"The longer she's out there unaccounted for, it becomes more disconcerting that it might not just be a childish prank," Beseler said.

Almost 100 deputies including SWAT and K-9 officers are helping in the search. Beseler said they won't stop the search until the girl is located — even if it lasts through the night. The weather is projected to drop below 60 degrees tonight.

Beseler said authorities are searching an approximately three-mile radius. There are about 53 sexual predators in that area, and deputies are interviewing all of them, he said.

Over on the comments section at FCN, many that live in that area say the heli is up and LE and residents are all over the place searching, but it helps to get a "feel" of the area.

I am guessing there is no Amber Alert because there is no vehicle description of a possible abductor.

I guess so.............seems like they could have another type alert for when no vehicle is seen nor a perp ::MonkeyMad::

I am very upset about that if that is why no Amber Alert has been issued.  Light the signs up anyway!  A child is missing! 

None of the reports mention whether the canines picked up a scent.

Yeah, that is where I got the info from too.

It just does not make sense not to light signs if they are not in use at this moment.

If I am not out searching tomorrow (hopefully she will be found) then I will be on the phone trying to figure out how to go about doing just that.  I am sure others have tried, but there has to be a way, there just has to.

The report says that there is a grid search being conducted with a 2-3 mile radius.

Investigators say this is a relatively SAFE neighborhood, and they are checking out the area's 53 RSO's.

Forgot to mention that in the video, the Sheriff said that the mother looked for Somer for 2½ hours before flagging down a patrol car around 5 PM.

Yes, its very very cold, I just came back inside from turning off the Halloween lights and I cant imagine a little girl being out there, we dont even know if she had a jacket....

I'd say that is a very long way to walk home-don't they have buses there? I'm less than one mile now from the school and we have a bus. We don't use it, but it's available ::MonkeyNoNo::

There's a 2 mile rule about children that can ride the bus......if they live within 2 miles of the school they cant ride........what a stupid rule, 

From my research it's 4 tenths of a mile.

One minute drive by car according to google maps.

Many areas do not have school bus transportation for children unless they are over a mile away.

I just saw cranberry jumpsuit, nothing about a coat.........my kids are already in hoodies and closed to shoes and she my not even have a jacket on, poor Somer.

It looks far to me.. I think all children should be bused up until high school unless in high school they live pass 2 miles......

So sad that a 7 yr old child goes missing and the police aren't alerted for hours, for whatever reason.  In this day and age, and in FL of all places, I'd have been on the phone with 911 when less than a half hour had gone by.   

Will be watching to see what the mom was doing.  Searching the neighborhood, I get that.  But at what time did she start looking, and at what time did she flag down the passing LE?  And lucky for her one just happened to be passing by. 

Looks like a lot of trees 'n stuff between the school and her home.  Sigh.  Way more than enough for one of those 53 RSO's to have slipped behind with her.

I wonder if she was searching by car or on foot ? It just seems like a long time if you were running around  frantically door to door seems like you could cover everywhere that a 7 year old could be in about 45 minutes at least ...kinda strange ::MonkeyConfused::

Its over a mile to the school from the childs home and I think the Mother was just running around the neighborhood asking if anyone saw her and walking the streets and stuff until sho spotted a officer and flagged him down.

If the patrol car had not of happened by I wonder how long it would have been before she decided to report her missing? Is there a dad in this somewhere? and how long was it before  he was notified by the mother?

ITA... I would of called right away then started looking.. You would think a friends mom would of called the parents by now.. Maybe the child  thought she would be in trouble with the bookbag inncident and is hiding in the woods.....

That's what I posted whe I first learned of this case, call LE first, then if they are hiding or at a friend's house the worst it that you may be embarressed, take NO chances anymore and now I hear HH stating that locals reported an attempted abduction yesterday ::MonkeyShocked::

I do think if she was hiding, she'd be out by now as it's cold down here now

Locals are reporting that they have dogs already there and are asking everybody that can to be at the command center as soon as daylight hits to start a grid search of the entire area.....

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- Clay County sheriff's deputies are stepping up their search of an Orange Park neighborhood for a girl who they said has been missing since Monday afternoon.

Deputies said 7-year-old Somer Renee Thompson was last seen in the Grove Park neighborhood. They said the girl's mother called police and said her daughter never returned home from school.

Somer is described as 3 feet, 5 inches tall and 65 pounds with brown hair in a pony tail. She was last seen wearing a cranberry-colored jumpsuit with pink striped sleeves. She also had a black, pink and white colored backpack with a skull and hearts.

Early Tuesday morning, Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said the search encompassed a one-mile radius around the girl's school, Grove Park Elementary. As daylight breaks, he said the search will be expanded farther.

Beseler said deputies had been out all night using infrared cameras and dog teams to search the wooded areas. Beseler said they have also finished interviewing all the registered sex offenders in the area. Tuesday morning, teams were continuing to search the wooded areas within the one-mile radius.

Beseler added that 10 days ago, the Orange Park Police Department received a call about some people in a blue Nissan driving within a one-block area of where Somer went missing. He said there were two Hispanic men and one Hispanic woman who tried to lure a child into their car. The sheriff did not expand further on that incident. Channel 4 is trying to gather more information on that incident from Orange Park Police.

Beseler is asking residents in the Grove Park area to look through their yards, parked cars and adjacent properties. He asked if you see anything unusual, then please call police.

Deputies and detectives from every branch of the Clay County Sheriff's Office, approximately 100 personnel, are looking for Somer Thompson. Additional support is also being provided by the agencies surrounding Clay County, such as St. Johns and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has also assigned a member to assist Clay County, along with staff from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).

The Clay County Sheriff's Office has utilized reverse 911 as well as the school system's automated phone message system to get information about Somer to as many households as possible as quickly as possible.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office is still searching for a missing 7-year-old girl in the Grove Park neighborhood of Orange Park. Deputies, joined by several FBI agents, members of other law enforcement agencies, as well as area residents combed the neighborhood in the cold and dark, but found no sign of the girl, authorities said.

Sheriff Rick Beseler said investigators were focusing on a possible lead involving a near-abduction of another child days ago.

The girl now missing, Somer Renee Thompson, was last seen wearing a cranberry colored jumpsuit with pink-striped sleeves.  She is 3-foot-5, weighs 65 pounds abd has brown hair in a pony tail.

She was walking home from Grove Park Elementary near West Gano Avenue and Debarry Avenue with her sister and friends but separated from them about 2:45 p.m. The child lives about a mile from the school. Her mother reported her missing to deputies a few hours later.

Beseler said in a news conference near the school this morning that approximately 10 days ago "the Orange Park Police Department within a one-block area of where Somer was last seen had a report of a blue Nissan Sentra occupied by two Hispanic males and one Hispanic female try to lure a small girl into the car." Beseler said it was unclear whether there is a connection to the missing girl, but he asked that anyone who had any information concerning that incident to contact police.
Beseler said authorities are searching an approximately three-mile radius. There are about 53 sexual predators in that area, and the sheriff said all were interviewed and their residences searched.

Beseler said earlier that before she went missing on Monday, Somer might have hit another child with her backpack during an argument and run off. He had said it's possible she might have run to a friend's house because she was afraid of getting in trouble.

"The longer she's out there unaccounted for, it becomes more disconcerting that it might not just be a childish prank," Beseler said.

Almost 100 deputies including SWAT and K-9 officers are helping in the search. Helicopters joined the search early this morning.

Beseler said the search will continue today, and will include FBI members, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and surrounding law enforcement agencies.

Overnight, authorities asked neighbors and members of the public to bring flashlights and join the search. Many answered the call, donning coats and spending hours searching the area, their flashlights dotting the dark night. Organized searches by members of the public will continue, the sheriff said, but he  also encouraged residents to also search outside their homes today.

Police received reports of an attempted abduction ten days prior of a blue Nissan-Sentra with two Hispanic males and a female one block from where Somer lives. They do not know if there may be a connection, as yet. An Amber Alert may be issued.

ORANGE PARK, FL -- Investigators have thoroughly searched a 1-mile radius around Somer Thompson's elementary school, but there's still no sign of the missing girl.

Sheriff Rick Beseler says this is the longest a kid has been missing in Clay County in 22 years. The Clay County Sheriff's Office says it is asking for information about a blue sedan seen in the neighborhood 10 days ago. Authorirties say the occupants, two men and a woman, tried to lure a young girl into the car.

Sheriff Beseler would not elaborate any further, except the incident happened within a block of where Somer was last seen Monday afternoon.

The Orange Park Police Department handled the case and will provide an incident report later today.

Deputies with the Clay County Sheriff's Office want people to search everywhere around their homes for the missing girl. In fact, they say several groups organized on their own and are expected to help with the search Tuesday.

Sheriff Beseler says individuals can also come help with the search. They are preparing flyers that they will distribute across the county.

The little girl hasn't been seen since Monday afternoon.  The girl's mother notified the sheriff's office around 5 p.m. that her daughter had not returned home from school.

"Her mother began looking for her, and after about two hours, [she] flagged down a patrol car and reported that Somer did not come home this afternoon," said Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler.

Thompson is a second-grader at Grove Park Elementary. Police say she is a white female, 3 feet 5 inches tall and about 65 pounds.  She has brown hair and was last seen wearing a cranberry colored jumpsuit with pink striped sleeves.

The sheriff says Grove Park is open Tuesday.

The sheriff says they have checked with immediate family members, including the girl's father, who lives in North Carolina.

An Amber Alert has not been issued because investigators don't have a vehicle description. But Sheriff Beseler says they may issue one later Tuesday.

"We would ask that the public assist us in providing any information that anyone may have about this little girls whereabouts...she has been missing for about seven hours now," said Beseler.

He added, "We're hoping that Somer has gone maybe to a friend's house or something like that, but we're leaving no stone unturned. We're diligently looking right now and we need help from the public."

Oh my. I could not even imagine what that family is going through. My little boy will be 7 in december he only weighs 38 pounds he is itty bitty. I do not think I would be able to handle anything happening to my baby. But then again I know that you never know how you would handle a situation like this. And I pray to god I never ever will. I myself don't think and really never thought that little somer was hideing outside so she would not get in trouble. Or for that matter I don't believe that she would be hanging out at a friends house that late last night when I first saw the story. I believe that somer would be to scared to stay outside that late. And I think that the police where flaged down to late. I would have never waited that long. Jmo

I agree that the mom should have called 911 right away while searching...7 is too young to be unaccounted for for even a few minutes in my opinion...that being said, hoping and praying that this little girl is found safe! it is a scary world out there...no neighborhood is safe it appears..which is totally sad...

After spending the night searching the Grove Park neighborhood where Somer Renee Thompson was last seen walking home from school with friends Monday afternoon, county officials met with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and issued the statewide alert for missing children.

Somer is described as 3 feet, 5 inches tall and 65 pounds with brown hair in a pony tail. She was last seen wearing a cranberry-colored jumpsuit with pink striped sleeves. She also had a black, pink and white colored backpack with a skull and hearts.

Deputies said the Somer was last seen at 2:45 p.m. walking home from Grove Park Elementary School near West Gano Avenue and Debarry Avenue with her twin brother and her sister. They were told she ran ahead of them after an argument and ran toward her home.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- Deputies are searching for a Clay County girl who didn't come home from school Monday afternoon. The Sheriff now says that they are looking for a vehicle that could be involved in her disappearance.

In a news conference this morning, the Sheriff announced that a blue Nissan Sentra was seen in the area about 10 days ago, 1 block from where the little girl disappeared, with two hispanic males and 1 hispanic female inside trying to lure another child into their vehicle. A police report was filed with the Orange Park police department in that incident.

The Sheriff does not know if this is related to the case, but would like people to be on the lookout for that vehicle.

Somer Renee Thompson was last seen around 2:45 p.m. Monday walking near West Gano and DeBarry Avenues. She never came home from school.

Somer is three feet, five inches tall, about 65 pounds, and was wearing a cranberry colored jumpsuit with pink sleeves.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office says Somer was walking home from school with her sister and some other girls when she got into an altercation. She then ran ahead of them to head home.

There are more than 100 deputies searching with canines. The Clay County Sheriff's Office Swat Team and the FBI are all investigating. Action News is told they will continue searching until summer is found.

Does anyone know why they are just now sending out an aber alert. I do not understand can someone please explain that to me?

I think there is certain criteria that has to be met before they are authorized to release an amber alert.
Perhaps they had to make sure she didnt wonder off or needed to make sure they had enough information to lead them into believe that she was taken and not just hiding or at a friends house.

It appears the reason for not issuing the Ambert Alert was because they had no vehicle description.
The DOJ makes the rules.
IMO, they need to be changed.
I plan on looking into it.
Why not light up the signs if they are not being used at that very moment anyway?

Yes, I am beyond frustrated with that system and it's requirements.
I am sure others have tried to change it before me but I am going to see how to go about it anyway.

Maybe a monkey with experience in an area such as this can tell me where to start?

Criteria For Activation

To activate the alert the following five (5) criteria must be met.

   1.       The child must be under 18 years of age.
   2.       There must be a clear indication of an abduction.
   3.       The law enforcement agency's investigation must conclude that the child's life is in danger.
   4.       There must be a detailed description of child and/or abductor/vehicle to broadcast to the public (photo when available).
   5.       The activation must be recommended by the local law enforcement agency of jurisdiction.

Note: Not to be used for Runaway

Steps For Activation

    *       The Amber alert can only be activated by law enforcement.
    *       The local law enforcement agency will call the FDLE Missing Children Information Clearinghouse (MCIC) at 1-888-356-4774.
    *       The FDLE will work in conjunction with the local law enforcement agency of jurisdiction to determine if information is to be broadcast on a regional or statewide basis.

In one of those news updates this morning, it said that LE has interviewed all the SROs in that area and searched their homes.  I find that kind of hard to believe, in this amount of time.  Unless it went like this:

From what I understand, he's a twin of her older sister.  All three still in grade school, 5th and below.  Of course, in the early days, much info can be reported wrong.  lol  Yesterday we didn't even know there was a brother, let alone a twin. 

I find it hard to believe as well .. one of the addresses was giving me fits, so need a monkey to see what is wrong with it. When I put it in the map I got I tried removing the apt number and still same thing. There is an apt number and addy for a diff RSO on same street but diff numbers, so has me curious.

Hmmm that's weird!  I took the addresses from the RSO reports.  Maybe it's like rooms over or behind a business? 

Wouldn't be at all surprised to find out they either reported wrong address or a wrong address was put down for them in the RSO registry. 

Some look like the same apts or something, yep.  And two look like they are next door to each other, two across the street from each other, and some down the street neighbors.  Then there's a base about 5 or 6 miles away.

Somer's Father Pleads for Everyone to Search

ORANGE PARK, FL -- The father of Somer Thompson says there is nothing to describe how he feels right now.

"Just imagine it's your child missing," said Sam Thompson in a telephone interview with First Coast News Tuesday morning.

Thompson is asking everyone to do what they can to find Somer, the 7-year-old girl who disappeared while on her way home from Grove Park Elementary school.

"Please find my daughter," Thompson sobbed.

The girl's father is separated from Somer's mother, Diena Thompson, and lives in Graham, North Carolina.

He says his heart plummeted when deputies with the Clay County Sheriff's Office called with the news Monday afternoon. "There's absolutely no way to describe the feeling," said Thompson.

Thompson says he has no idea whether Somer ran off or if someone took her. He just wants her to come home.

"Someone knows where my daughter is, and I just plead with their sense of humanity to let my daughter go."

Not sure, Twocents.  Searching is mapping the RSO's from the list I gave earlier, and is having a bit of trouble pinpointing one of them.  Evidently it's one of two that live on the same street, in apts ??, but am not sure which that is. 

She mentioned Wells Rd, yet there's only one of our RSOs who live in that apt.  The rest of the streets she was questioning, I don't see on the RSO list, so now am not sure what she's talking about.   

Guess we'll have to wait til she clarifies what the problem is.

The weirdest thing is that of that list given earlier, the closest of those RSOs living near Somer in Orange Park itself, is 4.1 miles.  There are TONS of RSOs living closer to her in Jacksonville, many many many in just under 1/2 a mile.  Sigh.

So his registered address is in Orlando, he registers in Orange County, may be living at that address in Orange Park, which seems to be only a couple of houses away from Somer.  AND he didn't show up in the Orange Park RSO list?  WTF??

According to the white pages reverse address directory there is no 1700 Horton listed in Orange Park, Fl and no listing under the name Diena Thompson. 

I thought someone had posted Somer's address as being 1706 somewhere in this thread.

Is ariana in here I have a question I need to ask her. It is not that important but I guess it could be. I was wanting to ask her how old much her daughter weighs that is the same age as somer and I have a little boy that will be the same age as somer in december. He only weighs 38 pounds. He is a bit small but that is 27 pounds than my almost 7 year old. It might not be a big deal. But I was just throwing it out there. In her pictures she don't look 65 pounds to me. And imo that is a pretty big difference

Grandmother Devastated by Loss of Somer

ORANGE PARK, FL --- The grandmother of 7-year-old Somer Thompson was in tears this afternoon at her home in Orange Park as the search for the Grove Park student who has been missing since Monday afternoon continued.

Debbie Bowling said the news has left her stunned. This is the kind of thing you would never dream would happen in your family, she said.

Bowling's daughter, who is Somer's mother, is devastated, Bowling said. Law enforcement personnel talked to her for most of the night as part of their investigation. Bowling said her daughter keeps hoping the disappearance of Somer is only a bad dream that she will wake up from.

The disappearance is uncharacteristic for her granddaughter who usually liked to play in the house, Bowling said.

She also thanked the community for their help and concern.

I was thinking 38 pounds was small for a seven yr.old but what do I know I have a Boston terrier that weighs 26 pounds and he is not over weight. I do know that girls tend to carry a little more fat than boys...and I would think it depends on if Somer eats a lot of junk food which children tend to do.

Wonder if she is perhaps living with a family member due to her separation from her husband.

Update on the search for Somer Thompson from an 11:30am news conference by Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler:

Scores and scores of officers are involved in the search for Somer.  They've expanded the alert by a few miles, and they're also interviewing more known sex offenders in the area.

He says good leads are coming in, they're getting hundreds. The number is 877-227-6911.

A statewide Amber Alert went out mid-morning.  Beseler says it's based on Somer's age and the circumstances surrounding the case.

They still don't believe she was abducted but they believe it reaches the criteria.

Beseler says they're still following up on the attempted abduction of a 5 year-old girl in Orange Park 10 year-old, but he's quick to point out that they don't believe the two are connected.

This is the first people are hearing about the attempted abduction of the 5 year-old.  Beseler couldn't say why it's only now being reported.

April Boothroyd, whose daughter was approached by some suspicious people, says she's thankful that her daughter is home safe.

Her daughter is in Kindergarten.  She told her mom that the people in the car asked her to get into the car.

Shannon Pallock, who witnessed the attempted abduction, says she was concerned for the 5 year-old.

She didn't get a great look at the people in the car.

At first I had hoped Somer was at someone's house and that person was too ignorant to call the LE and inform them, but now too many hours have gone by and it's not looking good.

I just watched the clip on HLN about Somer was that her mother that was standing by the officer? She looked fairly young and had blondish wavy hair?

Thats the same thing they said about Sandra, that they are not treating it as an abduction... i think until they know what happened and they "arent ruling anything out" that seems as though they are ruling it out..... ::MonkeyNoNo::

Yeah my little boy is a bit small. I was just thinking 27 pounds was a big difference,I was wrong. I guess.  I hope and pray that she is found soon I am so upset everytime I turn around another child is gone! It makes over protective parents like me. So much worse. I sometimes think that I am going to loose my mind I am always scared. If my boys r outside I am at that window every 3 to 4 minutes to check on them. If I don't see them I go straight out the door. And holler untill I get an answer. I don't let them go nowhere at all. And if I go they go. I swear sometimes I really think I am loseing it. And scared I am going to hurt my kids by the way I am. In the long run. So do I need help. Like do I need to go talk to someone?I freak out of just the thoughts of me not finding them after looking for 5 minutes. I get hot I already have the phone in my hand while I am waiting for an answer. What do you guys think. Am I nuts. And do I need to chill out a bit. But if I chill out and something happens. So Somer's parents are seperated and from what they told us it sounds like her mom was at home the day she went missing....was it  her day off or does she not work...if she does not work and is seperated from her husband how does she pay the bills? Is this William Murphy her boyfriend and he takes care of them?

One news report said a back pack with a skull on it and another said that it was a Hannah Montanna one

I have never heard of a child that young running away. And if she did run away how long was she gone. And what would she run away for. She is to young for all that imo

I did not see that one.  But just saw an interview that they were doing with the grandmother who was standing outside the residence which I believe was the Horton residence. When I looked at the interview showing on HLN I could see the address #s with the exception of the last digit, only got to see 170?.

Will try to catch it the next time they play the interview.

And once again the Amber Alert isn't out until much later.  IF Somer was abducted by those people in the Nissian they have had a whole evening to get further away where no one is going to know that Somer is missing. 

I know it's been said but the Amber Alert criteria has got to change.

Does anyone know if the dogs could follow her scent?  Let me tell you we had a K9 unit at our house this weekend because a guy jumped over our fence.  We showed them approx where the guy was and the dog took off in secs right along the same path the guy had taken.  If they know where she was last scene and they had something for the dogs to get here scent why can't they narrow it down?

A statewide Amber Alert has been issued for 7-year-old Somer Renee Thompson. Somer was last seen walking home from her school, Grove Park Elementary, yesterday at approximately 2:45 p.m.

According to her siblings, she was walking home with her twin brother, ten year old sister and several friends when she ran ahead of the group. When her siblings arrived at their home, Somer was nowhere to be found. Her mother and mother’s boyfriend searched the neighborhood for approximately 2 ½ hours. After an unsuccessful search Somer’s mother flagged down a patrol car and reported her missing.

Somer Thompson lives in Orange Park, Florida and the case is being handled by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. Somer was last seen in the area of West Gano and Debarry Avenues in Orange Park. She was wearing a cranberry colored sweat suit with pink stripes running down the arms and legs and wore a black shirt underneath. She possibly had a red bow in her hair and was wearing a white hat and scarf.  Somer was carrying a Hannah Montana lunchbox and backpack.


The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has reported receiving hundreds of tips however and is seeking information regarding a blue sedan that was seen in the neighborhood in a previous abduction attempt. On October 10, 2009 a woman witnessed an attempted abduction within a block from the area where Somer was last seen. Authorities state that in that incident a woman and two men tried to lure a young girl into their vehicle. However, Clay County Sheriff’s have not said that the two incidents are connected.
Sheriff Rick Bessler has stated that Somer’s disappearance marks the longest time a child has been missing from the county in 22 years. There are 87 registered sex offenders within a five mile radius of where Somer disappeared.

According to the press conference LE just had, the mother was not at home. LE stated that Somer was let out of school at 2:50 , met up with her siblings on the way home.  The siblings made it home and someone by the last name of Patton who was at the home asked where was Somer and sent the siblings back out to look for her about an hour.  The mother called home to see if all the kids had made it home and found out that Somer had not.  On her way to the house the mother stopped and informed LE.

HLN reporting on Somer now...her g-ma is talking...says Somer is very friendly loving child...150 tips have come in they have checked out 80 of them....reporter saying this is now an all out search ...they said at some point Somer met back up with group but seperated again and never made it home...

So the mother was not at home ...that makes more sense....

Boyfriend's name is Sean Patton. House number is 1700. Just did a drive by.

150 leads, LE has followed up on 80. They are concentrating right now on searching.

They have searched with canines, divers and on horseback. FBI and FDLE are involved. They have searched 1 retention pond and a small lake. They have concentrated on searching wooded areas. They are searching in 12 hour shifts, 7 AM-7 PM/ 7 PM-7 AM.

They have interviewed 57 sexual predators within the 3 mile radius and have extended that to 37 more in a larger radius that includes Jacksonville.

They consider her an endangered missing child. The do suspect foul play. No POI.

Somer left her school at 2:50 and met up with her siblings in the 1100 block of Gano Avenue. The siblings arrived home at 3:05 without her.

Tomorrow, they plan on including volunteers in their organized search.

I sure hope that won't be necessary. Hope they find her before that.

I was really praying to God that we wouldn't have to start another one of these cages. My prayers are with Somer. Please, God, bring this little girl home safe. She's just a baby.    :(

Sending prayers for this little one to be found soon. One comment, her poster looks so different then her photos. I would have thought they were two different kids. 

I grabbed all of the pictures she has posted.

Thought it was odd she has NO pictures of any of her children at all there.

Has there been any talk as to if the dogs picked up her scent??

I was glad to see she had no pics...my ex and I have a written agreement we will not post pics of our kids. Too many crazy people out there.

Florida police are searching for 7-year-old Somer Renee Thompson, who disappeared on Oct. 19, 2009.

Somer left school at 2:50 p.m. that Monday, and was walking home from school with her twin brother, her 10-year-old sister, and some friends when she ran ahead of the group, toward her home.

Somer's siblings arrived home safely at about 3:05 p.m. without her and no one has seen her since.

Their mother's friend, Sean Patton, was at the house and asked the children where Somer was and they said she walked off.

Sean and the kids searched for Somer for an hour. when Somer's mother called, Sean told her Somer had not made it home.

She left work immediately and stopped at the Sheriff's Office on the way home to report her daughter missing.

The Clay County, Fla. Sheriff's Office is following up on the 150 leads they had received as of 3 p.m. on Oct. 20, 2009. They had followed up on about 80 of the leads, so far.

Cops say the search for Somer is their primary focus. The effort involves all resources available, including divers, a helicopter and search dogs.

"This is an all-out search," Clay County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Dan Mahla said. "It's go-time for us we're searching anything and everything we can."

On the morning of Oct. 20, 2009, the search expanded, first to a three-mile radius and later to five miles.

Police interviewed 57 sex offenders and sexual predators within a three-mile radius. They have since expanded that search area to a five-mile radius to include 37 more.

Cops say there was an attempted abduction in that area 10 days before, but they say are not sure if the incident is related to Somer's disappearance.

A witness saw a little girl talking to someone in a car, and asked her if she knew the person. The girl said she did not, and that the person had asked her to get in the car.

When the witness turned around, the car was gone. Cops are not focusing on this incident, but simply acknowledge that it occurred.

Cops say Somer is considered an endangered missing child and they do suspect foul play in the case, though they do not currently have a person of interest.

Somer is in the second grade at Grove Park Elementary.

"There's any number of things that could've happened so we're  hoping for the best but we're working it as if it were a crime scene right  now," Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said at a news conference on Oct. 20, 2009.

Florida Authorities Search for Girl, 7, Who Vanished After School

Florida officials expanded their search for a 7-year-old girl who vanished while walking home from school Monday afternoon.

Somer Thompson was released from Grove Park Elementary School in Grove Park, in northern Florida at 2:50 p.m. She was with her twin brother, her 10-year-old sister and friends when she reportedly ran ahead of them after getting into a fight. Her brother and sister said she was not at home when they arrived at 3:05 p.m.

Somer's mother's boyfriend searched up and down the block for her when she didn't come home; her mother called home at 4 p.m. to check on the kids and immediately called authorities.

Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said officers are investigating whether Somer's disappearance is connected to an event that happened in the area on Oct. 10, when three people unsuccessfully tried to lure a 5-year-old girl into a car.

"We want to emphasize while we're taking this into consideration, we are not focusing just on this … we're exploring other areas and angles,” Beseler said.

He said 57 sex offenders have been interviewed within a 3-mile radius, and their homes and yards have been searched. The search was expanded Tuesday to a 5-mile radius, and officials say they will interview 30 more registered sex offenders.

"This is an all-out search," Sgt. Dan Mahla, of the Clay County Sheriff's Department said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. "We are going to keep trying and trying and trying. We have all these resources and we are maximizing them to the max."

He said they've received 150 leads in the case, but no person of interest.

"She is an endangered, missing child." Mahla said. "It would be very tough for her to survive [given her age, location and conditions outside], so we suspect foul play."

More than 100 Clay County deputies were searching for the second-grader on Tuesday. Beseler said the area where Somer disappeared is wooded and swampy, and they want to search the woods thoroughly before moving search units out farther. Dogs and helicopters are being used.

Somer's father, who lives in North Carolina, said he's praying for Somer's safe return. The little girls' parents are going through a divorce.

“She’s just a beautiful, wonderful little girl, full of life,” Samuel Thompson, 41, told the Times-Union this morning from his North Carolina home. “It’s unimaginable.”

Somer has been missing since 2:45 p.m. Monday, when she was on her way home from Grove Park Elementary School near West Gano Avenue and Debarry Avenue with her sister and friends. She might have hit another child with her backpack during an argument and run off.

Thompson, Somer's father, said his daughter has four sibilings, including a twin brother. He said he and Somer's mother, Diena, are going through a divorce and that he last saw Somer about two years ago when she visited him.
Thompson said investigators called him about 6:30 p.m. Monday to tell him about Somer's disappearance. He said he is waiting for more information from authorities before making plans to come to Florida.

"We've got every church around here praying that she's just at a friend's house. Maybe she's just scared to move," he said.

I also read somewhere (unsubstantiated) that there is a 13 year-old sibling as well. So that would make 4 kids.

I noticed in the last news video on jax4 the man that was helping Somer's mom carry in the water had on a shirt that said us coast guard I wonder if that is Diena's dad and that is the agent that she was referring to him being ?

They also said that Somer's dad was told to stay in NC in case Somer showed up there ? She is 7 for crying out loud !

The father of a 7-year-old girl whose disappearance has created headlines in Florida lives in Graham.

Sam Thompson found out his daughter was missing when he was called Monday evening by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. Somer Thompson disappeared on the way home from school Monday afternoon, leading to a statewide Amber Alert in Florida.

Sam Thompson and Somer’s mother, Diena Thompson, are separated. She, Somer and the family’s three other children live in Orange Park, Fla., a suburb of Jacksonville.

News accounts say Somer Thompson was walking home from school with siblings and friends Monday when she ran ahead of the group and disappeared. Newspapers and TV stations report a massive search involving more than 100 law enforcement officers, helicopters and tracking dogs. Anyone with information is asked to call the Clay County Sheriff’s Department at 1-877-227-6911.

Somer Thompson is in second grade and attends Grove Park Elementary School in Orange Park. She has brown hair, is 3 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 65 pounds.

Sam Thompson is a 1987 graduate of Southern Alamance High School, where he played football and baseball.

His service in the U.S. Army included a tour of duty in Iraq, where he was injured by being thrown from a truck.He is part of Trinity Baptist Church near Graham.

Thompson said he’s ready to make a trip to Florida but has been advised by law enforcement there to wait to see what happens.

“I hope she’s just curled up in somebody’s house right now scared to come out, because she’s scared she’s going to be in trouble,” he said. “We just want her to come home so we can kiss her face off.”

He also had a message for anyone who may have his daughter. “She’s precious to us,” he said, and the family longs to have her back.

Reason I asked is maybe its due to the parents having significant difficulties between them which may indicate having them together may not be a good idea.

Seems to me from what I'm hearing is that it is a sexual predator/human trafficking case.    I'll read back here but is there a further explanation of this sibling fight that reportedly occurred?

ORANGE PARK, FL -- An attempted abduction that happened near Somer Thompson's home 10 days before she disappeared is being re-investigated.

Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler says he has no link tying the incident to Somer's disappearance, but he can't rule it out either. Somer, 7, disappeared while walking home from Grove Park Elementary with her siblings and some friends Monday afternoon.

The Oct. 10 incident happened around 12:30 p.m. Police say a blue, four-door sedan, possibly a Nissan, pulled up. A woman and two men inside tried to lure a 5-year-old into the car.

The girl's mother, April Boothroyd, says they told her daughter they were supposed to pick her up and take her home. Her daughter told them, "no."

Boothroyd believes her daughter is okay because a woman who saw what was going on went to help. "Something looked off to me," says Shannon Pillott.

Pillott says she went up to the kindergartner and asked her if she knew the people. The child told her no and that they tried to get her into the car.

Pillott says when she turned around the car was gone, then she followed the little girl home.

Boothroyd adds she knows her daughter is alive and well thanks to that good samaritan.

I know that somer's dad has not seen her in 2 years. But I wonder if they talk on the phone. Anyway I was reading where someone said that maybe the reason that they are wanting him to stay in nc because him and somer's mom may not get along. But I am just asking because I don't know. Does the dad have to stay just because they told him to stay home and see what happens. I just was wondering if he was to go to florida anyway. Would he get in trouble. And he could just stay in a motel or something but at least he would still be there. He will always be upset with his self for not being in her life or not seeing her in 2 years. I am just asking. I am not sure why LE advised Sam Thompson to remain in NC. But I believe they asked him to stay there just for the time being.

He is, of course, free to go to Florida if he chooses.

But I am betting LE has a reason to ask him to stay in NC for right now. And I respect the fact that he took their advice, personally.

I hear he is a disabled vet, not sure what his disability is. He may not be ambulatory or something. Could be that it would be a physical hardship for him to travel.

Just don't know.

I am not even close to being caught up in this thread but I wanted to post before I forgot where this was and had to look again.  My 7 year old weighs about the same as your son.  She is small for her age too and wears a slim in clothes, regulars literally fall off of her.  Her younger sister is 17 months younger and just as tall and weighs one pound less and can't fit into a slim to save her life.  I assume she will be about 50 lbs. by the time she is 7, but I haven't seen anything on a birthdate yet so Somer may be an older 7 year old, almost 8?  I also don't think you are crazy, if it wasn't for school and extracurricular activities my kids wouldn't even know what a sun is due to the fact I don't like my neighborhood.  The people here think I am crazy and stuck up but if someone grabs a kid around here (the neighborhood) I guarantee you it won't be mine.

Ty ariana for your reply. I was really bout to freak out about that weight thing I know a few other kids my sons age and they are nowhere near 65 pounds. And my son is in a slim also. Thank heaven for the jeans with the straps in the inside of the pants so you can pull the waist tighter lol. If not for them my little boys jeans would fall down lol. But I really think the mother is not at fault here, she is grieving the disappearance of her child. I think it is a stranger abduction.

The grandmother said that Somer never met a stranger, she was friendly to everyone. I am betting she was taken away by a car, especially in light of the abduction attempt 10 days ago in the same general area.

ORANGE PARK, FL -- The search for little Somer Thompson will go all night long if necessary, involving police and volunteers.

Flyers are everywhere in Orange Park tonight. While many neighbors and total strangers are handing them out, others are searching for any sign of the little girl.

Guided by a flashlight, and armed with a stack of flyers, friends walk the same path where Somer was last seen.

"Any and whoever, windshields, it doesn't matter. Someone is going to get a flyer. That picture of that girl has got to be out," said volunteer Ashley Vires.

Before night fell, two moms braved afternoon traffic in Orange Park to give passing drivers a flyer.

"It's something I've always worried about. It's terrible. It's too way too many kids just gone!" said volunteer Karen Murray.

Meanwhile, police on horseback searched Somer's neighborhood.
And about 30 JSO recruits emerged from a wooded area, some with sticks used to search through thick grass.

"There were four on this side and they had some on that side," said Eric Newberg of Orange Park.

Newberg lives about a mile from Somer's home. He says investigators peered into the water and looked over the banks of the large pond behind his mother's home.

"The later it gets, the worse it gets. So, they need to search everything right now," added Newberg.

One volunteer agrees, ""Like they say, no rock unturned. I have to look. I can't help but to look."

Investigators say Somer's mom is expected to speak at a news conference early Wednesday morning.

Graham, N.C. — A daylong search for a missing 7-year-old Florida girl who vanished on her way home from school Monday has produced more than 150 leads, but the child remained missing Tuesday and officials said they suspect foul play.

More than 100 Clay County, Fla., deputies, law enforcement officers from neighboring counties and the FBI scoured a residential Orange Park neighborhood looking for Somer Thompson.

"I can't describe how that feels. It feels like somebody just took the life out of you," said Sam Thompson, Somer's father.

Sam Thompson, an Iraq War veteran, lives in Graham, North Carolina. He is recuperating from an accident that left him in a wheelchair.

“For anybody who has taken my daughter, I would just beg them and plead to their sense of humanity that they would let my daughter come home,” he said.

Horses, dogs, divers and helicopters have been used in the search for the missing girl, which began Monday afternoon when she failed to return home from school.

Officials have no idea what happened to her.

The second-grader is white, 3 foot 5 inches tall and weighs 65 pounds. She had brown hair tied in a pony tail with a red bow and was carrying a purple Hannah Montana backpack and lunch box.

The Amber Alert was issued at 9 a.m. Tuesday by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The alert was not immediately issued for Somer because her disappearance wasn't witnessed and there was no description of a vehicle.

Law officers are working 12-hour shifts so they can search for the girl around the clock.

Yes, it is certainly not the same world that I grew up as a kid either. I grew up in small town America where at the age of 9,10 ... we rode our bikes to school 5 miles.

No one would even think of that today and I do not even think the Elementary school even allows it.

Yes, I saw the earlier abduction attempt. These predators are unrelenting.

I think the fact that it was done as school got out in the afternoon is telling. If there was a pattern of them walking home, then they could have been targeted. Just waiting for one to stray and then pounce.

You would think.  As so many of these cases occur at beyond alarming rates, parents should discuss ways of keeping our children safer on the streets such as a designed buddy system, a community school parent transportation pool/walk patrol & yes cell phones for children old enough to use them (even if prepaid limited ones) so that 1) children can use in emergencies/contact parents 2) they can be tracked.   Every adult should utilize due diligence in the safety of our children, we cannot get so paranoid that children need to live in a bubble BUT there are many ways to reduce stranger abductions, sexual attacks & murders. 

As far as sexual predators out and about our society, the problem is first and foremost within our extreme liberals with twisted bleeding hearts that seem to think these offenders have rights & can be cured...its a scientific FACT that they cannot.   There should be something done nationwide that prevents our most liberal judges from giving ludicrous lenient sentences which allows these monsters back out on our streets to commit the same crimes repetitively.  For level II and up that are out and about currently, personally, Im all for stomping all over their rights & rounding them up so that they must live in very remote areas that are not populated with our child, I really dont care if they are offended.   It is high time that society as a whole & collectively considers the rights & expected safety of our children over the rights of their aggressors.

Let me ask my Fellow Monkeys what you would do under these circumstances.  I live in a relatively quiet neighborhood.  But I'm sure everyone thinks that until something like this happens.

Anyway, the street I live on is one of the busier streets.  It's also the street kids use to walk to school, as the elementary and middle schools are at the top of the hill. 

Since school started, when I leave for work, I see this little girl walking alone to school.  She must be in the 6th grade because I see her walking too early to be elementary.  She's pretty petite, probably weighs less than 70 pounds.  She has a fairly lengthy walk to school, and with the changing of the seasons, it's still pretty dark outside when I see her.  And when I see her, there's no one else around--no other kids on the street.  She's all alone people.

Monkeys, this scares the crap out of me.  I'm not sure exactly where she lives, but I believe my home is about 1/2 way between the street I know she comes from and the school.  She probably has a 1/2-3/4 mile walk.  I don't want her to become a statistic.  Yes, I live in a "safe" neighborhood, but like I said, everyone thinks that until a child goes missing, and that doesn't mean there's a fence around the place that keeps the sickos out.  I don't know what her parents are thinking.  They're making her a target for a predator.

I am so afraid for this little girl.  But what can I do?  I have to do something because if I don't, and something happens to her, I won't be able to live with regretting what I "should have done."

Ok this is what I would try to do.  I would try to find out where she lives. And then I would go on scared monkeys. And I would print off every story about a missing/murdered child around the same age as her. And I would include the whole story about the child. Like what when and where. And even how. And if that does not open up her parents eyes. Then nothing ever will. I have always been over protective so i thought. Untill I started comeing to scared monkeys. I do believe I have almost read every single story. And it scared the hell out of me. My eyes are always open and I am a lot more aware of my boys surroundings. That is exactly what I would do. JessStar.  I hear your concern.  Perhaps you could call the school and ask them to remind parents through fliers that children should not be walking alone.  Ask if they will hold a safety seminar for the children and parents.  See if you can get a commitment from the school to do this.  Then follow up.  If no commitment then ring the Board of Education for the district, requesting same.
Also provide the school with a description of the youngster you are concerned about and the street/s involved.

ORANGE PARK, FL -- Somer Thompson's mom, Diena Thompson, will appear on all three network morning shows this morning.

The parking lot at Orange Park's Town Hall is filled with trucks, as crews prepare for the interviews inside council chambers.

Thompson will appear on Good Morning America on ABC and The Today Show on NBC.

A reporter for NBC News and several network news producers are also in Orange Park this morning.

Sheriff Rick Beseler will appear with Diena Thompson at 8:15 a.m. today, which First Coast News will cover live.

The sheriff has indicated the search has expanded and there's a statewide Amber Alert. But it's unclear if the search has expanded to the southeast region or even the entire country.

Somer's mother gathered with friends for a candlelight vigil Tuesday night. Her father who lives in North Carolina also pleaded for her safe return.

The 7-year-old girl disappeared while walking home from Grove Park Elementary school Monday afternoon. She was last seen with her hair tied into a ponytail with a red bow. She wore a maroon sweatsuit with a pink stripe and a black t-shirt. She was carrying a purple Hannah Montana backpack and lunchbox.

Clay Schools Chief Struggles with Somer's Disappearance

Grove Park Elementary first grader Somer Thompson vanished just 100 yards from Superintendent Ben Wortham's Orange Park home and not far from where his own school-aged grandchildren live.

"My own children, my own grandchildren live right in the neighborhood," the Superintendent said in an impromptu interview early this morning. "So this hits especially close to home for me and I have a real feel for what is going on here."

Wortham is facing the challenge of talking about a very adult situation, the disappearance of a young girl, with children who knew Somer as a playmate.

"What are you telling your grandkids?" I asked.

"I'm telling them to stay close to mom and dad. Never let them out of your sight," he answered.

Wortham isn't just trying to explain the disappearance of a seven-year-old girl to his own family, he's trying to make sense of this complicated situation to hundreds of kids in his school system.

"Young children are very smart and very perceptive in our world today," Wortham said. "The children viewed this as an opportunity to work with detectives and help their friend Somer. So I think students do understand the grasp of this."

Helping parents understand may be the bigger challenge.

Wortham is spending a few minutes with Somer's mother Deana this morning, his first chance to talk with the tearful and terrified parent since the girl's disappearance.

"It'll be [a message] of compassion," Wortham said. "Just letting her know that the school system and the school plays a role in the life of her child and just during the school day, but after school as well."

Thanks. But I don't think my 14 year old is thanking me at all for being to protective. But he does not look like he is 14. He is a very small 9th grader. I take him and his little brother to school everyday. I always have. I just hope that I don't hurt our relationship or make him angry with me when he gets older. I tell him all the time. I say. i just wanted to say I drive kids of all ages to and from school everyday. Kids that live right next to the school are not allowed to walk or bike to school.Every child MUST be brought in by car or bus.I think it should be this way with every school..These are precious kids..I live and work in a very safe neighborhood but now in days that doesnt matter. Some parents are just to busy to pay attention to whats going on with thier kids I think..I dont know how many times parents tell me to just drop thier child off even if noone is home, some of these children are only in second and third grade.My girls are 11 and 17...And I am an overprotective mother..Ive been told by so many.but i dont care I want my girls to be safe. They go everywhere with me. Thats why I took this job in the first place.I hope parents start to open thier eyes and make changes in thier lives with thier children before its too late. Prayers for Somer and family..Hope she is found soon safe and sound.

I wanted to point out that the father, Sam Thompson in NC is a disabled vet and in a wheelchair, which may be one of the reasons LE told him he should probably remain home for now.

And they say they have identified "the individual" ...there were reportedly 3 individuals in this incident. Two men and a woman.

I surely hope they address this in their next press conference.

I also posted an article earlier stating the same.

When I was in my late twenties, my Dad gave me an alarm thing to keep in my pocket for when I was by myself. Even walking in a shopping centre parking lot isn't safe. Underground parking is also bad. He got it at an Army Surplus store. This thing when the button was pushed made such a loud noise, it would scare the bejesus out of anyone and would also alert anyone in the vicinity that something was up and make them at least look in my direction. Maybe cell phones should have a panic button type thing.

An official with Waste Management has confirmed to First Coast News that officials, including those from the Clay County Sheriff's Office, are searching through the Chesser Island Landfill near Folkston, and they are looking for a body.

It is not confirmed now what body they are looking for, but Clay County does have investigators on the scene.

ORANGE PARK, FL -- One of three crossing guards Somer Thompson should have passed on her walk home from school Monday afternoon didn't see the young girl walk by the day she disappeared.

The Orange Park police officer who oversees the crossing guards says the first two, who were closest to the school, aren't sure if they saw Somer.

The first crossing station is just steps away from Grove Park Elementary, at Miller Street and West Gano Avenue. The second is about a half-mile down West Gano. At the third stop, another 2/10-mile down Gano, the crossing guard "is confident she didn't see Somer."

None of the crossing guards would talk on camera. We tracked Somer's routine walk home from school and it's exactly one mile.

"Coming and going from school, usually there are larger groups of children that are walking together. [They should] keep their eyes open, stay away from cars, stay away from anybody you don't know," Clay County superintendent David Owens says.

Owens says his heart sunk when he learned Thompson disappeared leaving school. She's just 7 years old and in the first grade.

"When should a kid be able to walk home alone from school?" First Coast News' Erich Spivey questioned.

"Looking at age characteristics, I think maybe an 8- or 9-year-old looking at the judgment of a student 8 or 9 years old certainly would be better than the judgment of a 5- or 6-year-old kindergartner or first-grader," Owens says.

Channel 4 also learned that a search was conducted at the Folkston, Ga., landfill where Clay County's garbage is dumped. Clay County officials said the search was routine, not the result of a tip, and nothing related to this case was found.

Nearly 100 sailors from Naval Air Station Jacksonville joined the search efforts Wednesday morning, covering wooded areas and the grounds of a wastewater treatment plant less than one mile from where Somer disappeared.

Texas Equusearch, a volunteer mounted search-and-rescue team that was involved in searching for Haleigh Cummings in Putnam County and Casey Anthony in Orange County was to arrive in Orange Park on Wednesday afternoon.

ORANGE PARK, Fla. (AP) - Investigators have no clues three days after the disappearance of a 7-year-old girl in North Florida.

The mother of Somer Thompson went on all three network national morning news shows Wednesday with a tearful appeal for the child's return. She said she assumed someone has her daughter.

Sheriff Rick Beseler appeared with mother Dina Thompson and said investigators are baffled. He told the CBS "Early Show" that officers have interviewed about 75 known sex offenders in a five-square-mile area.

Somer vanished on her way home from school Monday in Orange Park, near Jacksonville. Investigators have said they suspect foul play. The sheriff said someone must know where she is and urged the public to call in tips.

·         Gov. Charlie Crist is expected to be in Orange Park this afternoon to offer his support and meet with the family. Crist may also offer access to thousands of Florida National Guard personnel now training at Camp Blanding south of Middleburg.

·         The Justice Coalition will announce today it is offering a $25,000 reward for the girl’s safe return. Details are expected to come at an afternoon press conference.

Three days in, no leads

7-year-old Somer Thompson has “disappeared off the face of the earth,” Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler has admitted in a case that has “baffled” investigators.

Somer’s mom Diena tearfully plead for the girl’s return, telling viewers that Somer’s twin brother was “lost” without her, but investigators have so far found no clues in the girl’s disappearance. Somer was walking home from her school near Jacksonville, FL, with her twin brother and 10-year-old sister when the children had a disagreement. Somer ran ahead of her siblings, disappearing from view, and has not been seen since. As no one witnessed an abduction, an Amber Alert was not issued until the following morning.

Authorities report having interviewed around 60 of the 94 sex offenders living in a three mile radius, and that they plan to expand their scope after turning up no leads in Somer’s disappearance. Beseler urged anyone with information to come forward in hopes of turning up information about Somer’s whereabouts:

Saw this on WS, from a former babysitter of Somer, I guess at this point one can take it with a grain of salt, but interesting.             Megan Reese, 17, who has babysat Somer in the past said that she was head strong and contradicted the mother by saying that it was not anything new for Somer to run ahead of her siblings on the way home from school and that she would take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to make her way home; and that her mother had a list of phones numbers for her friends and would start calling the friends if she took too long to get home. The baby sitter said she never knew where Somer ran to, but she loved tree houses and swimming pools. Many times Somer would get upset as she felt the other kids picked on her and she would run away.

I was just reading more about that Indigo healing thing that the mother's boyfriend, I'm guessing boyfriend, is involved in. I don't get bad feelings about it, though I guess I can see how. This guy could be a great guy who loves kids, but we have all gotten so leery of people, it is hard to know. But I will say the Mom certainly looked horrifically stunned and saddened, I don't think she had anything to do with this, I was shocked over on WS some people are questioning her behavior. Yes, some people go in and out of crying and talking rational and swaying back and forth, I do that when I'm very upset. I truly believe some monster grabbed this little one  ::MonkeyNoNo::

One of the comments, i think on FCN, said something about garbage pickup was yesterday so perhaps thats why they are at the landfill today.

Unless the crossing guards are very familiar with the children, I can totally understand if one isn't sure if Somer crossed or not, and could get confused and say they saw her, when it could have been another day.

Personally, I don't think the family or people in the household have anything to do with it. I am really thinking it is a stranger abduction.

I also though about the landfill thingy. It could be that this is where Orange Park's garbage goes? And maybe they are just checking it out as routine, to eliminate the possibility.

Just my thoughts.
