by The Associated Press
Monday July 27, 2009, 9:12 AM
National Cener for Missing & Exploited ChildrenRobert Manwill

BOISE -- An 8-year-old boy from Boise has been missing since Friday, and the FBI has joined in the search.

Boise police say Robert Manwill went missing about 9:30 p.m. Friday in southwestern Boise and that he may have been headed to a party at a friend's house when he disappeared.

About 20 FBI agents and dozens of local residents were assisting in the search over the weekend.

The Boise Police Department says it will hold a press conference about the search Monday.

On Sunday, Deputy Chief Jim Kerns pleaded with the public for help finding Robert, who is described as 4 feet, 2 inches tall, about 50 pounds, and wearing blue jeans, black shoes, and either a brown shirt with the words, "Andy don't need no Mic" or a blue shirt with a superman symbol on the front.

RBoise police continue search for missing boy with the help of rescue dogs
Anna Webb - Idaho Statesman
Published: 07/25/09

Robert Manwill, 8, has been missing since Friday evening. He was last seen at 9:30 p.m. near his home in the 2800 block of West Cherry Lane.

Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue were called in Saturday morning. Five dogs are searching the area that includes two large canals and the Boise apartment complex where Robert lives near Vista Avenue.

Chris Harry, operations leader with the search and rescue team said the dogs turned up no trace of Robert Saturday afternoon.

Boise Police detectives conducted an extensive area search for Robert during the night, which continued into the morning. There is no evidence of foul play, and it's possible Robert may have spent the night with a friend.

He may have been wearing a brown shirt with writing on the back: "Andy don't need no Mic," or a blue shirt, with a Superman symbol on the front. He was wearing blue jeans and black shoes. He is 4'11," weighs 50 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes.

If you've seen Robert, call Ada County Dispatch at 377-6790.

About 75 volunteers, including off-duty officers, Boise State University officers and residents, methodically scoured the neighborhood around Robert Manwill's home Sunday.

A pond in his apartment complex, which had been searched by divers, was drained in the evening to make sure Robert wasn't in it, a police spokesman said.

The 8-year-old went missing 9:30 p.m. Friday from the 2800 block of Cherry Lane, near Vista Avenue and Targee Street in Southwest Boise. The New York Canal is about two blocks south of the apartment complex where Robert lives.

Boise police filed paperwork to issue an Amber Alert immediately but were denied because the incident does not meet the national criteria, said police spokesman Chuck McClure.

Family members were the last to see Robert. Police at this point don't suspect any family member is involved in his disappearance.

Officers have been searching for him Friday night and have asked anyone who may have seen the boy, even for a moment walking down the street, to call them at Crime Stoppers, 343-COPS.

Robert is roughly 4 foot 2 inches tall, about 50 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, black shoes and a either a blue shirt with the Superman or Spiderman symbol on it, or a brown shirt that had the words "Andy don't need no mic" on it.

This is sad and shocking. No amber alert? An 8-year old child that weighs fifty pounds is missing and his parents don't know what he was wearing at 9:30 on a Friday evening?

BOISE - An 8-year-old boy has been reported as missing.

Family members told police that Robert Manwill was last seen walking out of his home Friday night on Cherry Lane around 9:30 p.m. Boise Police believe the boy may have been headed to a party at an unknown friends' house when he left.

He was possibly wearing a brown shirt with writing on the back "Andy don't need no Mic" or a blue shirt with a superman symbol on the front. He had on blue jeans and black shoes.

Manwill is 4'11' and weighs 50 pounds.

Manwill is still missing after an extensive area search Saturday and Sunday by Boise Police, Mountain Search and Rescue, and local volunteers.

In a press conference Sunday afternoon, Boise police confirmed 12 FBI agents will assist in the efforts to find Manwill.

According to police, crews will drain the pond at the Oak Ridge Apartments to see if the boy's body could be inside.

As of Sunday, there are still no leads to Manwill's location

Anyone who believes they have seen Manwill is asked to call Ada County Dispatch at 377-6790.

UPDATE: FBI now involved in search for missing 8-year-old boy

09:48 PM MDT on Sunday, July 26, 2009

BOISE -- We're now more than 48 hours into the search for Robert Manwill.
Police say they've received some information, but nothing that has led to Manwill.

After two days of searching the biggest question is still out there - what happened to Robert?
So far the answer from everyone is ‘we have no idea.’

"At this point, we don't know where Robert is. We're trying to determine what has happened, and we're pleading with the public for their assistance in locating Robert Manwill," said Deputy Chief Jim Kerns with the Boise Police Dept.

In addition to the public's help, the FBI is now involved.

20 FBI agents are in the area, and more could be on the way at a moment’s notice to help find Manwill.

"We're leaving no stone unturned in that investigation,” Kerns said. “We're looking at all of the potential leads. We're looking at all possibilities in our attempt to find out what's happened to Robert.”

Robert was last seen in his apartment complex on Friday around 7 p.m.
"It's tough. It really is tough, this is very difficult to go through as a family," said Trish Burrill, who is Robert's aunt.

Now, searchers are looking everywhere.

"Go out, look in your sheds, your garages, hiding places, abandoned cars, any place where a young child might hide," Kerns said.

That search included draining a 12 foot deep pond in the middle of Manwill's apartment complex.
Over 100 people roamed neighborhoods looking for anything and everything that might point investigators in the right direction.

"This kid, we thought he was at the park yesterday with us, well not with us with us. Which park? Ann Morrison," said some teenage girls.

Police aren't saying whether this information put them any closer to finding Manwill.
But they do say they won't stop until he's found and neither will Manwill's family.
"I don't recall a time where I've seen this much community support in Boise come out for a search,” said Lt. Doug Shoenborn. “It's really been nice to see a lot of support from the local community.”

"I will search until I find him. No matter what. I will search until I find him. Until he comes home," Burrill said.

The search efforts organized by the Boise Police Department are done for today.
We're told they will regroup in the morning and figure out the best way to proceed.

FBI to Join in Search for Missing Boy

The search continues for a missing 8 year old boy, and now the FBI is getting involved.

Charles McClure of the Boise Police department says they've handed out fliers, stopped cars, and searched a canal and a nearby pond trying to find Robert Manwill who was last seen Friday night about 9:30 near his home in the 2800 block of Cherry Lane.

According to the Idaho State Patrol sex offender registry, there are 408 RSO's within 5 miles of Robert's home. There are 70 within 1 mile. And there are 5-10 VERY close to his home.

2800 W. Cherry Lane address that has been given in reports. That's not his exact address, it's just the block given in media reports.

Robert Manwill went missing Friday night.

Police asking for any information regarding boy

BOISE - Police continue to search for a missing eight-year-old Boise boy - and say they have no good leads into his disappearance.

Robert Manwill was last seen by family Friday night. Over the weekend, the search for the boy intensified, with hundreds of volunteers, police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation joining forces in an effort to find the child.

Helicopters from the Idaho National Guard have also joined in on the search, and are hovering over the area where he went missing - near Vista Ave. and Cherry Lane in Boise.

During a Monday morning news conference, police say they have received a number of leads - but nothing concrete that tells them where the boy may be.

The child’s family thanked the community for the response they’ve received, and for the large-scale search response.

"It's tough. It really is tough, this is very difficult to go through as a family," said Trish Burrill, who is Robert's aunt.

Police say this is one of the most important cases they’ve covered in a while – but despite the intense effort, they have so far come up empty.

"At this point, we don't know where Robert is. We're trying to determine what has happened, and we're pleading with the public for their assistance in locating Robert Manwill," said Deputy Chief Jim Kerns with the Boise Police Dept.

Twenty FBI agents are in the area, and more may be called in.

"We're leaving no stone unturned in that investigation,” Kerns said. “We're looking at all of the potential leads. We're looking at all possibilities in our attempt to find out what's happened to Robert.”

Search crews have been looking in sheds, garages, abandoned cars, homes, in bushes, behind fences and anywhere a small boy could hide.

Officers and volunteers say they will not stop until he's found.

“I don't recall a time where I've seen this much community support in Boise come out for a search,” said Lt. Doug Shoenborn. “It's really been nice to see a lot of support from the local community.”

Police officers and over one hundred volunteers together in prayer before heading out to again look for a missing eight-year-old boy.

Robert Manwill disappeared late Friday night now 48 hours later he is still nowhere to be found.

"At this point we don't know where Robert is we're trying to determine what has happened and pleading with the public for the assistance to locate Robert Manwill", says Deputy Chief Jim Kerns.

Robert's mother tells police he was playing outside near their home before he went missing. Local police with the help of the FBI have been searching night and day hoping to bring some relief to a mother waiting in anguish.

"Please, please help me find my son. I need him to come home", says Melissa Jenkins.

Police say they are also following up on every possible lead but say it's going to take the entire community to help bring Robert home.

"This is a vulnerable child of eight and we need the publics help to help us find him", says Chief Kerns.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of 8-year-old Robert Manwill call the police tip line, 570-6457 or email findrobert@cityofboise.org.

My own opinion is they need to drop the vehicle part of the Amber Alert. Just because no one saw a vehicle or another person does not mean it hasn't happened. If a child goes missing, it should be put our right away at least in a regional area and the longer gone, the more reaching areas. If I had been in Boise Idaho on Friday night, I could have easily driven to Los Angeles by this time, and I would have been in a slower big truck. That would be 950 miles. I am using this as an example, because when a child goes missing in a state, after 3 or 4 days they put it out only statewide. Totally unacceptable!

Police renew call for Boiseans to look for missing boy; 'No reason to believe Robert is not safe'
BY KATY MOELLER - kmoeller@idahostatesman.com
Published: 07/27/09

Boise Deputy Police Chief Jim Kerns speaks at a press conference Monday morning, issuing a renewed call for the public's help to find missing 8-year-old Robert Manville, who disappeared Friday evening from an apartment complex near the intersection of Vista Boulevard and Cherry Lane in Boise.

Polly Gorley peers behind a fence on Sunday afternoon as she and about 75 volunteers combed the neighborhood where Robert Manwill, 8, was last seen after he disappeared on Friday night near Vista and Cherry Lane.

BOISE, Idaho — Boise police are issuing a renewed call for the public's help to find missing 8-year-old Robert Manville, who disappeared Friday evening from an apartment complex near the intersection of Vista Boulevard and Cherry Lane in Boise.

They want anyone who lives or works around that area to look again in nooks and crannies and quiet spots — anywhere a 50-pound 8-year-old boy might be hiding.

"We hope to convey a message of hope... we have no reason to believe Robert is not safe," said Jim Kerns, deputy chief of operations for Boise police.

Police — with help from other local agencies and the FBI's Child Abduction Response Team — are also expanding their search beyond the half-mile around the apartment complex, which was combed over the weekend. Officials are also re-interviewing family members and neighbors.

Some 50 leads have come in, officials said, but none have panned out. The boy was last seen on the complex's playground after 7 p.m. Friday night and was gone by 9 p.m. Though some initial reports indicated the boy had wanted to go to a birthday party, police said they had no evidence of that.

"It's hard to speculate on his mental state," Kerns said.

About 20 FBI agents and dozens of local residents were assisting in the search over the weekend. Officials drained a pond near the apartment complex and were finishing the search Monday.

The police have set up a special phone line and e-mail address to make it easy for anyone who to contact them with information: (208) 570-6457 - and findrobert@cityofboise.org.

Robert is described as 4-feet, 2-inches tall, about 50 pounds, and wearing blue jeans, black shoes, and either a brown shirt with the words, "Andy don't need no Mic" or a blue shirt with a superman symbol on the front.

I agree. The vast majority (74%) of the abducted children who are murdered are dead within three hours of the abduction. (Source: Attorney General of the State of Washington, who did a study of cases reported to law enforcement in 1997)

I think all children should be treated as ABDUCTED until proven otherwise. Especially 8 year olds missing at 9:30 at night. A regionally/statewide amber alert should be put into effect ASAP, as a child's life may depend on it.

Somthin' stinks...

Who has a B-day party for a child after 9 PM ??? Or even at 7??? If there was a party, then the party kid must be near Robert's age, no?? In one report it says cops have no evidence that there was any party....

Some reports say he was last seen at 7 pm Friday, others say 9-9:30. Timeline is hinky. Much about this is hinky...
