There is the warning bell...CJBP is giving them a fair shot at defending her & no more. It is not a shock that they got more funds or time & I dont anticipate that CJBP will let it delay this trial. This Chief Justice knows all too well how he has to rule & avoid any chance of a successful appeal, no gifts for the defense to hang their hat on something worthy of the paper they write on.

Agreed.

Isn't it a little late to have this trial expedited? Caylee deserved justice a long time ago. The judge has to allow all of this crazy spending, he is protecting the case and making sure the verdict stands. They could investigate from now until forever but unless Casey tells the truth of how she murdered her baby, they will find no evidence to the contrary.

I wonder how Ms. Finnell is going to make all those people on the death penalty appeal to be less reluctant. I can think of about half of them have every reason in the world to be reluctant.

So true, they would have to use torture, for me to even admit I ever knew one of the Anthony's. We have not seen or heard from friends or family for a good reason, they want no part of this craziness. I don't really see how anyone saying that Casey was a cute, sweet baby could make anyone change their mind about the death penalty. I believe that she will get LWOP but if the jury feels different, I don't think anything from her young past or even high school is going to change their mind. Everything they need to know happened right before Casey killed Caylee and what she did after. That 31 days staring the jury in the face, day after day is going to be impossible for anyone, especially Bozo and Jarhead to defend.

I'll bet half of them wont be even being called as a witness, certainly not after taking the stand in the case-in-chief or under cross examination by the State (depending on who calls who first). I gotta get to the craft store & get a few rubber stamps custom made for these idiots foreheads....RELUCTAUNT, ya think? Have they asked themselves why...o yea they know the answer to that but their agenda for recognition & receiving blood money off a heinous crime has colored them stupid.

I can't believe the names of the people that they want to *help* Casey in the penalty phase. Amy, the one she robbed blind, the boys she had a good ole time with and all the people that know she lied for any reason and no reason at all. You just know from seeing other cases that they are actually going to ask these people if she seemed to be a *good mom*. I just hope that one of them can say this as fast as they can, before anyone can object, "ya, she seemed to be a great mom, right up until she killed Caylee".

I'm thinking that if I was a convicted indigent murderer sitting on death row in Florida and the judge and JAC refused requests for $31,000.00 in investigator's fees and over $5,000.00 in mitigation funds, I'd be getting my appeal started.

All the money in the world shoveled to Finnell isn't going to make them talk. That's my prediction. She admitted she has already made six trips to Orlando. How many ways do they have to tell her "No!" "He77 no!" "Not even in your dreams." And Cappy's "Hell to the no!" I wonder if any of them asked her if she was a "Sir" or "Ma'am." Inquiring minds want to know.

Casey Defense Motions Granted At Taxpayer Cost
Judge Perry Hears, Grants Motions At Monday Hearing
POSTED: 4:55 pm EST January 24, 2011
UPDATED: 5:06 pm EST January 24, 2011
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Judge Belvin Perry granted two defense motions in the case against Casey Anthony on Monday that could cost taxpayers up to $17,000.
One of the motions set a $5,000 cap on investigative hours for a possible penalty phase in the trial.
Perry said he believed the request was reasonable.
The other motion was a defense request for an additional 300 investigative hours. Anthony was declared indigent in March, so a state agency now doles out funding for her defense. The state-approved rate for investigative hours is $40 per hour.
Defense attorneys argued that the prosecution continues to turn over evidence in the case and that they must do their diligence and look into each and every piece.
The defense suggested that a deadline be set for turning discovery over to the defense.

Prosecutor Linda Drane-Burdick argued that the state continues to look into the case and investigate new claims made by the defense.
She said her team would do that up until the trial, if necessary.
"We're playing catch up every time the state of Florida releases discovery," said defense attorney Jose Baez.
Drane-Burdick also argued that much of the discovery, such as jailhouse letters to Anthony from strangers and e-mails from a man who once worked as a defense investigator, that has been handed over should not require much leg work.
"There's no new discovery that requires a lot of additional investigation," she said.
Perry granted the motion in its entirety. Past requests from the defense had only been granted in part.
Perry said any future requests would need to be justified.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Feb. 4. WESH.com will provide live coverage.
Anthony's murder trial is scheduled to begin in May.

Casey Anthony: Defense wins more money — and a warning
Caylee and Casey Anthony, Jose Baez, WESH — posted by halboedeker on January, 24 2011 6:24 PM
http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment_tv_tvblog/2011/01/casey-anthony-defense-wins-more-money-and-a-warning.html
Chief Judge Belvin Perry has approved an additional $12,000 in investigative costs for Casey Anthony’s defense team.
WESH-Channel 2’s Bob Kealing tonight reported that Perry approved the costs to meet a May start in the murder trial. Anthony is accused of first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.
Kealing noted that Perry added a warning in granting the request for 300 additional hours of investigative time: “Any future request will have to be a little bit more justified.”
In the phone hearing, defense attorney Jose Baez said his team was “playing catchup every time the state of Florida releases more discovery.” Assistant State Attorney Linda Drane Burdick countered that the state is rebutting claims made by defense witnesses, and she warned that the state will continue to do so.
Since Anthony was declared indigent, the total investigative costs for her defense team has reached $31,000, Kealing added, citing state lawyers.
WESH anchor Martha Sugalski also reported that the defense had “turned over to prosecution a hodgepodge of materials.” She said those materials from Jose Baez’s flash drive includes a copy of a WESH report on a prosecution bug expert; background reports on the expert and medical examiner Dr. Jan Garavaglia, various reports from media outlets and unidentified photos labeled with only numbers.

Casey Anthony team granted 300 hours for investigative costs
By Anthony Colarossi, Orlando Sentinel
6:11 p.m. EST, January 24, 2011
The Casey Anthony defense succeeded in getting a new infusion of state funding today to help with ongoing, pre-trial investigative costs and penalty-phase investigative costs in the first-degree murder case.
Chief Judge Belvin Perry granted a $5,000 cap for expenses related to penalty-phase work. That investigative work deals with tracking down and interviewing witnesses who can help "mitigate" the state's case should Casey Anthony be convicted and face the death penalty.
Ann Finnell, the primary attorney working on that part of the case, told Chief Judge Belvin Perry Monday that the defense has had difficulties contacting and speaking with potential witnesses for the penalty phase.
"People are very reluctant [to speak] because of the high publicity in this case," Finnell said during a hearing that occurred via teleconference with the various parties scattered at different remote locations. "It has been a real impediment."
After Perry granted the cap for the penalty phase investigation work, he heard arguments for granting the defense an additional 300 hours of investigative work says it needs to deal with new discovery documents released in the case.
After citing the thousands of pages of discovery documents released, defense attorney Jose Baez said, "We have to review each and every document."
But Assistant State Attorney Linda Drane Burdick said, "There's no new discovery that requires a lot of additional investigation. A lot of it is in the form of rebuttal."
In the end, Perry granted the 300 hours, which includes 106.2 hours already worked, in the interest of justice and getting the case prepared for trial in May, he said
The approval of 300 hours of investigative time is worth about $12,000.
Anthony was declared indigent last year, making her eligible for state funding. Monday's hearing stemmed from her legal team's third request for more investigative hours.
Anthony, 24, is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie, in 2008.
She is charged with first-degree murder in the death-penalty case.
Last week, the Justice Administrative Commission, which handles the state funding, confirmed that Casey Anthony's defense had billed the state $64,973.99. Of that, $41,654.69 has been paid out. Investigative and court-appointed mitigation specialist work accounts for the largest portion of the billings to date.
The public funding follows more than $275,000 in private funding that was raised for Casey Anthony's defense before she was declared indigent.

I think that JP was protecting appellate issues by granting the defense the extra money. Hate to see it, but it's probably the best thing to do.

I agree, it was probably necessary, but that does not mean I have to like it, and I don't like it one little bit.
He keeps saying that they will have to provide more justificiation for it next request, but then approves it anyway. I know why he is doing it, but there has to be an end somewhere.
I am waiting for them to want to fly to Mexico or Puerto Rico to check out all the Zenaida's that live there.
Her defense team knows she killed her baby, let's just get on with it, do the right thing, take your punishment like a big girl. Put your big girl panties on. This whole thing upsets me, and I don't know if I will be sane by the time the trial comes around.
