Pope at Angelus: ‘Advent is a journey of conversion’
06 December 2020, 12:10
Pope Francis addresses the faithful on the second Sunday of Advent inviting them to undertake a journey of conversion as we prepare to receive the Lord
.
By Vatican News staff writer
Pope Francis reflected on the Gospel passage of the Second Sunday of Advent (Mk 1:1-18) saying that it reveals an itinerary of faith that is similar to the one that Advent proposes to us: “that we prepare ourselves to receive the Lord at Christmas.”
Speaking during the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope said that passage introduces the figure and work of John the Baptist and tells of how “conversion” puts us on a path of repentance and the quest for God and his Kingdom.

St Peter's Square: Christmas tree and nativity scene to be inaugurated on 11 December
30 October 2020, 13:00
The Vatican announces the date for the inauguration of the Christmas tree and nativity scene. This year, the inauguration of the Christmas tree and Nativity scenes in St Peter's Square will be as important as ever, as the Vatican works to keep the Christmas spirits high, in difficult times
.
By Vatican News staff writer
The virus has not stopped the spirit of Christmas, today ,more than ever, it is important to remain united and empathise with our sisters and brothers until we are able to return to life as we know it.
This is precisely what symbolises the Vatican's Christmas display this year more than others: hope, trust, love, family, and the awareness that Jesus will come among his people to save and console them.
On 11 December at 4.30 p.m., in compliance with anti covid-19 regulations, as is custom, the Nativity scene, donated by the Italian town of Castelli, the spearhead of the ceramic industry since the 16th century, and the Christmas tree, a 28m high majestic spruce (Picea abies) from Kočevje, in Slovenia, will be inaugurated.

Holy See's approval required for new religious institutes in Oriental Churches
07 December 2020, 12:00
In an Apostolic Letter issued in the form of a 'motu proprio', Pope Francis amends the canon law of the Oriental Churches to require the Apostolic See’s approval for the valid recognition of new institutes and societies of eparchial law
.
By Vatican News staff writer
Pope Francis, with the Apostolic Letter issued motu proprio "Ab initio", has modified canons 435 §1 and 506 §1 concerning the ecclesial recognition of new Institutes or new Societies of eparchial law in the Oriental Churches.
The latest amendments to the Canons establish that eparchial Bishops must receive written permission from the Apostolic See, which alone has final judgment, to establish an institute or society of eparchial law in the Eastern Catholic Churches.
The Apostolic Letter comes after the motu proprio “Authenticum charismatis” of 4 November 2020, with which Pope Francis modified canon law for the Latin Church, requiring the same written Approval from the Apostolic See for the establishment of institutes of consecrated life.

Pope Francis to visit Iraq, first Apostolic Journey in 15 months
07 December 2020, 12:03
The Vatican announces that Pope Francis will make an Apostolic Journey to Iraq on 5-8 March 2021, visiting Baghdad, the plain of Ur, Mosul, and Qaraqosh
.
By Devin Watkins
Pope Francis is set to break a 15-month hiatus from international travel with what is sure to be a historic visit to the Middle Eastern nation of Iraq.
The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, announced the news on Monday, adding that the Pope had accepted the invitation of the Republic of Iraq and the local Catholic Church.
It will be an Apostolic Journey covering four days and four Iraqi provinces.
According to the Press Office statement, “He will visit Baghdad, the plain of Ur, linked to the memory of Abraham, the city of Erbil, as well as Mosul and Qaraqosh in the plain of Nineveh.”
The Pope’s itinerary will be released at a later date, and will “take into consideration the evolution of the worldwide health emergency.”

Pope prays for Rome and the world at the Madonna's feet
08 December 2020, 09:02
Despite the rain, Pope Francis venerates the Madonna before her statue in Piazza di Spagna, and celebrates Mass in her honour in the Crypt of the Nativity in the Basilica of St. Mary Major on Tuesday morning
.
By Sr. Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp
On Tuesday morning, at 7:00, Pope Francis went to Piazza di Spagna to express a private act of veneration to the Immaculate Conception, on the day on which this mystery is commemorated in the liturgy.
According to a statement released to journalists by the director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni:
"With the first light of dawn, under the rain, Pope Francis placed a bouquet of roses at the base of the column where the statue of the Madonna is, and turned to her in prayer, so that she might lovingly watch over Rome and its inhabitants, entrusting to her all in the city and the world who are afflicted by illness and discouragement."
Bruni's statement adds that, toward 7:15, Pope Francis left the Piazza di Spagna and went to the Papal Basilica of St Mary Major. There "he prayed before the icon Maria Salus Popoli Romani and celebrated Mass in the crypt of the Nativity."
Then, Pope Francis returned to the Vatican.

Pope’s Angelus Address on Feast of Immaculate Conception (Full Text)
Don’t Take Advantage of the Lord’s Patience!
DECEMBER 08, 2020 15:14 JIM FAIRANGELUS
On the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis reminded the faithful that we can be saved in the end as Mary was in the beginning. But for us, it requires repentance and God’s grace
.
The Pope’s comments came before praying the noonday Angelus with the pandemic-limited crowd of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square.
The Holy Father suggested that repentance isn’t something to be put off.
“But be careful. It does not pay to be clever – to continually postpone a serious evaluation of one’s own life, taking advantage of the Lord’s patience,” the Pope warned. “He is patient. He waits for us, He is always ready to give us grace.
“We may be able to deceive people, but not God; He knows our hearts better than we ourselves do. Let us take advantage of the present moment! This, yes, is the Christian sense of seizing the day.”
Following are the Pope’s full remarks, provided by the Vatican.

Pope Francis proclaims “Year of St Joseph”
08 December 2020, 11:15
With the Apostolic Letter “Patris corde” (“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis recalls the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. To mark the occasion, the Holy Father has proclaimed a “Year of Saint Joseph” from today, 8 December 2020, to 8 December 2021
.
By Vatican News
In a new Apostolic Letter entitled Patris corde (“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis describes Saint Joseph as a beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father, an accepting father; a father who is creatively courageous, a working father, a father in the shadows.
The Letter marks the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX’s declaration of St Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. To celebrate the anniversary, Pope Francis has proclaimed a special “Year of St Joseph,” beginning on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception 2020 and extending to the same feast in 2021.

Pope at Audience: ‘Never feel ashamed to pray in difficult times’
09 December 2020, 09:58
In his catechesis at the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis urges everyone to listen to the cry that wells up within us especially in moments of difficulty, which he says is the prayer of supplication
.
By Devin Watkins
Pope Francis continued his catechesis on various aspects of Christian prayer, at the Wednesday General Audience, focusing on the prayer of supplication.
He began by noting how Jesus taught His disciples the Our Father to pray for both great and humble things.
In the Lord’s Prayer, we implore God for the highest gifts: “the sanctification of His name among men, the advent of His lordship, the realisation of His will for good in relation to the world.”
Yet with the same prayer we also ask for simple items, “our daily bread”, which the Pope said indicate “health, home, work; and also the Eucharist, necessary for life in Christ.”

Pope grants possibility of plenary indulgence on December 12
09 December 2020, 16:37
Marking the 125th anniversary of the Coronation of Our Lady of Guadalupe on 12 December, Pope Francis grants to all Catholic faithful of the world the possibility to obtain a plenary indulgence while remaining at home
.
By Vatican News staff writer
On the mandate of Pope Francis, the Apostolic Penitentiary has extended the possibility to Catholics across the world to obtain a plenary indulgence as they celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Coronation of Our Lady of Guadalupe, from home, on 12 December.
With the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City closed for her feast to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Pope said the faithful can receive a plenary indulgence for their Marian devotion if they follow certain conditions.
Mexico City Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes issued a letter announcing the indulgence. His letter was accompanied by the formal proclamation by Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, head of the Apostolic Penitentiary.
How to receive an indulgence
To receive an indulgence, a remission of the temporal punishment of one's sins, the following conditions must be met. A person must:
- Prepare an altar or place of prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe at home.
- Watch a livestream or televised Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City on 12 December "actively participating… with devotion and with exclusive attention to the Eucharist."
- Complete the usual conditions for an indulgence by praying for the Pope's intentions, being in a state of grace after confession, attending a full Mass and receiving Communion.
The letter specifies that the last three conditions "can be fulfilled when public health guidance allow."

Council for Inclusive Capitalism launches partnership with Vatican
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Dec 9, 2020 / 09:00 am MT (CNA)
.-
The Council for Inclusive Capitalism launched a partnership with the Vatican on Tuesday, saying that it would be “under the moral guidance” of Pope Francis.
The council consists of global companies and organizations which share a mission to “harness the private sector to create a more inclusive, sustainable and trusted economic system,” according to its website.
Members include the Ford Foundation, Johnson & Johnson, Mastercard, Bank of America, the Rockefeller Foundation, and Merck.
According to a press release from the council, the partnership with the Vatican “signifies the urgency of joining moral and market imperatives to reform capitalism into a powerful force for the good of humanity.”
Pope Francis met with members of the organization at the Vatican last year. With the new partnership, the 27 leading members, called “guardians,” will continue to meet annually with Pope Francis and Cardinal Peter Turkson, prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
Francis encouraged the council last year to renew existing economic models to be fair, trustworthy, and capable of extending opportunities to all.
“An inclusive capitalism that leaves no one behind, that discards none of our brothers or sisters, is a noble aspiration,” Pope Francis said Nov. 11, 2019.
Members of the Council for Inclusive Capitalism make public commitments to “advance inclusive capitalism” in their own companies and outside them, through grants promoting various issues, including environmental sustainability and gender equality.
The Vatican partnership puts the group “under the moral guidance” of Pope Francis and Cardinal Turkson, a press release states.

Pope to celebrate early Mass Dec. 24 because of COVID-19 curfew
Cindy WoodenDec 10, 2020 CATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE
ROME —
Pope Francis will celebrate the Vatican’s traditional Christmas “Mass during the Night” Dec. 24, but will begin the liturgy at 7:30 p.m. local time so that the few people invited to attend can get home in time to observe Italy’s 10 p.m. curfew
.
The curfew is one of many measures the Italian government has employed in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
In addition to the early start time, the Vatican’s COVID-19 measures are still in force: only a small congregation will be allowed inside the basilica; people’s temperatures are checked as they arrive; masks are required for the congregation and servers; the seating is socially distanced.
While the nighttime Mass often is referred to as “Midnight Mass,” it has not been celebrated at midnight at the Vatican since 2009 when Pope Benedict XVI moved it to 10 p.m. Pope Francis moved it to 9:30 p.m. in 2013, his first Christmas as pope.
The pope’s Christmas blessing “urbi et orbi” (to the city and the world) will be given, as usual, at noon Christmas Day from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Other liturgies announced by the Vatican Dec. 10 include:

Vatican issues new instructions for ecclesiastical institutes of higher learning
09 December 2020, 21:22
New Instructions from the Congregation for Catholic Education are intended to “meet today’s challenges” and ensure ecclesiastical institutions are in line with the “new missionary spirit” of the Church
.
By Benedetta Capelli
The Congregation for Catholic Education has issued new norms for higher educational institutions, regulating their aggregation, incorporation, and affiliation.
The three new Instructions published by the Congregation are intended to help ecclesiastical schools “meet today’s challenges and ensure that the system of ecclesiastical studies follows the Church’s drive for a new missionary spirit,” said Archbishop Vincenzo Zani, Secretary of the Congregation.
The three Instructions three years after the Apostolic Constitution Veritatis gaudium (on ecclesiastical universities and faculties) was promulgated by Pope Francis on 8 December 2017. The documents aim at responding to the need for “networking” among the varied situations of institutes of higher studies, in order to strengthen the missionary outreach of the Church. The documents note the “demanding task” these challenges present, “for the areas contemplated in ecclesiastical studies as well as for the institutions themselves.” The Instructions also hope “to provide both for the development of these Institutes and for their effective presence in various parts of the world”.

Fifteen ways to gain an indulgence in the Year of St. Joseph
By Courtney Mares
Rome Newsroom, Dec 10, 2020 / 08:30 am MT (CNA)
.-
Pope Francis has decreed a Year of St. Joseph in which Catholics will have the opportunity to obtain a special plenary indulgence.
Until December 2021, there are many new ways that Catholics can receive an indulgence, including entrusting their daily work to the protection of St. Joseph the Worker or reciting the rosary with their families.
These acts must be accompanied by sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion, and prayer for the pope’s intentions, the usual conditions to obtain any plenary indulgence.
Plenary indulgences remit all temporal punishment due to sin and must be accompanied by full detachment from sin.
According to the decree issued by the Apostolic Penitentiary on Dec. 8, there are 15 ways to receive an indulgence in the Year of St. Joseph:

.
By Vatican News
“The feast of Christmas reminds us that Jesus is our peace, our joy, our strength, our comfort.” Those were Pope Francis words on Friday morning to a delegation who presented this year’s Christmas Tree and Nativity scene to the Vatican.
The majestic spruce tree, which takes pride of place in St Peter’s Square, comes from the forests of Kočevje, a town on the Rinža river in Slovenia, while the ceramic crib has been donated by the Italian town of Castelli, in Italy’s Abruzzo region.

Pope celebrates Mass for feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
12 December 2020, 13:15
Looking on the image of Our Lady of Guadalupes, says Pope Francis, we see reflected three qualities: abundance, blessing, and gift. That was the Holy Father's message in his homily for the Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Saturday
.
By Christopher Wells
Pope Francis celebrated Holy Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe at the Altar of the Chair in St Peter’s Basilica on Saturday morning.
Under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Blessed Virgin Mary is honoured as the Empress, Patroness and Mother of the Americas, and especially of Latin America. Seminarians from Latin American countries, as well as official ambassadorial delegations, were in attendance at Saturday’s Mass, although the number of participants was limited due to coronavirus precautions.

Pope to UN Climate Summit: ‘Now is time to change direction’
12 December 2020, 16:47
Pope Francis sends a video message to participants in the UN’s virtual climate summit, and highlights the Holy See’s efforts to promote a “culture of care” in order to combat climate change
.
By Devin Watkins
“The effects of the ongoing pandemic and climate change—which are relevant not only for the environment but also for the spheres of ethics, society, economics, and politics—weigh most heavily upon the lives of the poor and vulnerable.”
Pope Francis offered that motivation for the Holy See’s commitment to combatting climate change, in a video message sent on Saturday.
His remarks were directed to participants in the UN’s High Level Virtual Climate Ambition Summit, which was held Saturday, 12 December, on the 5th anniversary of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.
The event sought to urge national governments to honor their commitments to reduce CO2 emissions and limit global warming.

Pope: Artists “transmit truth and beauty” through artistic creativity
12 December 2020, 10:34
Artists have a lofty and demanding calling, especially at a time when the pandemic has made shadows grow deeper, Pope Francis said on Saturday morning as he met with artists taking part in this year’s Christmas concert. The beauty of art, he told them, can inspire hope, harmony, and peace
.
By Vatican News staff reporter
In this critical historical moment, in which humanity is rediscovering our dependence on one another due to the pandemic, art has a crucial role to play, Pope Francis said on Saturday.
Speaking with artists who will be performing at this year’s Christmas concert, the Holy Father shared “a few thoughts on art and its role at this critical moment in history.”

Pope Francis: Art which transmits truth and beauty gives joy
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Dec 12, 2020 / 06:45 am MT (CNA)
.-
When truth and beauty are transmitted in art, it fills the heart with joy and hope, Pope Francis told a group of performers on Saturday
.
“Dear artists, in a special way you are ‘guardians of beauty in our world,’” he said Dec. 12, quoting St. Pope Paul VI’s “Message to Artists.”
“Yours is a lofty and demanding calling, one that requires ‘pure and dispassionate hands’ capable of transmitting truth and beauty,” the pope continued. “For these instil joy in human hearts and are, in fact, ‘a precious fruit that endures through time, unites generations and makes them share in a sense of wonder.’”
Pope Francis spoke about the ability of art to instill joy and hope during a meeting with music artists taking part in the 28th edition of the Christmas Concert in the Vatican.
International pop, rock, soul, gospel, and opera voices are performing in the benefit concert Dec. 12, which will be recorded in an auditorium near the Vatican and broadcast in Italy on Christmas Eve. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year the performance will be recorded without a live audience.

Pope at Angelus: Do not forget about joy
13 December 2020, 12:10
During his Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis speaks of John the Baptist: a "leader of his time," who lived the expectation and joy of seeing the Messiah arrive without ever drawing attention to himself but directing it toward Christ, the true light
.
By Francesca Merlo
For those who believe, the season of Advent is filled with a joyful sense of expectation, “somewhat like when we await the visit of a person we love a great deal”. Adressing the faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square, Pope Francis stressed that “this dimension of joy emerges even more” on this day, the Third Sunday of Advent, which opens with Saint Paul's exhortation: “Rejoice in the Lord always”. The Pope explained that this excitment is caused by our closeness to the Lord. "The closer the Lord is to us, the more joy we feel; the farther away he is, the more sadness we feel", he said.
Turning to the Gospel of the day, Pope Francis noted that Evangelist introduces John the Baptist "in a solemn way". He is the first witness of Jesus, excluding Mary and Joseph, said the Pope. He noted that John was a leader in his time but that "he did not surrender even for an instant to the temptation to draw attention to himself: he always oriented himself toward the One who was to come."

Pope Francis celebrates 51 years of priesthood
13 December 2020, 20:11
Ordained a priest on 13 December 1969, the future Roman Pontiff discovered his vocation sixteen years earlier, on 21 September 1953, on the feast of Saint Matthew
.
By Vatican News Service
Fifty-one years ago today, on 13 December 1969; and just a few days before his thirty-third birthday, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was ordained to the sacred priesthood.
Eleven years earlier, on 11 March 1958, he had entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus where, less than four years after his ordination, he made his perpetual profession on 22 April 1973.
