Middle Moutain area to close next week at sheriff's request
Times staff report Article Last Updated: Friday, July 01, 2016 11:53am

The Middle Mountain area of the San Juan National Forest north of Vallecito Reservoir will be closed to all public entry from Wednesday, July 6 through Monday, July 11 at the request of the La Plata County Sheriff. The closure will include Middle Mountain Road (Forest Road #724), which will be closed to all entry about three-quarters of a mile before the Cave Basin Trailhead. This will block access to the Cave Basin Trailhead and Tuckerville. In addition, the Runlett Park Trail will be closed from Runlett Park to a point two miles south of Middle Mountain Road. The trails and Middle Mountain Road below the closure area will remain open, and dispersed camping will continue to be allowed in the area below the closure area.

Forest Service patrols will notify campers and others using the closure area over the July 4th weekend that they must relocate no later than early Wednesday morning. The Sheriff's Office and Forest Service law enforcement officers will also conduct a sweep of the National Forest above the closure to notify campers they must relocate by Wednesday.

The sheriff's office did not immediately return phone calls asking why the area will be closed.

Parts of Middle Mountain will be closed from Wednesday through Monday, July 11 at the request of the La Plata County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's office to search Middle Mountain again in Redwine case
By Melanie Brubaker Mazur

Times Editor Article Last Updated: Friday, July 01, 2016 12:48pm

Part of the San Juan National Forest will be closed on Middle Mountain next week as investigators search for more evidence in the homicide of Dylan Redwine.
The La Plata County Sheriff's Office will be back on Middle Mountain next week to search for further evidence in the homicide of Dylan Redwine.

His partial remains were discovered there in June of 2013, seven months after he disappeared from Vallecito on a court-ordered visit with his father, Mark Redwine.

"We look at this like working to put together a jigsaw puzzle," said Lt. Dan Bender, a spokesman for the La Plata County Sheriff's Office. "Out of 1,000 pieces, we don't know the connection that one piece has. And the average jigsaw puzzle user has the advantage of a picture on the box."

The investigation has been ongoing since Dylan's disappearance in November of 2012.

"It can be an item, it can be information, it can be a number of things," Bender said of the many pieces of the police search. "We still have investigators assigned to it. Any loose ends we can tie up, the more pieces we can get, the more we can complete that puzzle, and the closer we'll be to obtain justice for Dylan."

The 13-year-old's disappearance was classified as a homicide in 2015. The sheriff's office named his father a "person of interest" in the investigation later last year.

Only the top part of the road will be closed. The sheriff requested the closure because the road is narrow and twisty, and there isn't much room for investigators to park and begin searching, Bender said.

The Middle Mountain area north of Vallecito Reservoir will be closed to all public entry from Wednesday, July 6 through Monday, July 11, the U.S. Forest Service said in a release on Friday.

The trails and Middle Mountain Road below the closure area will remain open, and dispersed camping is allowed in the area below the closure area.

Bender said there will still be plenty of four-wheeling and camping spots available, they will just be below the search area.

"Every summer, we have found some clues," Bender said.

New evidence search planned in Dylan Redwine case

DURANGO, Colo. - A new search for evidence is planned in the Dylan Redwine case.

Dylan was 13 when he disappeared on a court-ordered visit with his father near Durango during Thanksgiving week in 2012. Some of the boy's remains were found in June 2013, north of his father's home.

In August 2015, the La Plata County Sheriff's Office told Denver7 that Dylan's father, Mark Redwine, was officially a person of interest in Dylan's death.

The new search for evidence is planned for July 6-11 near the top of Middle Mountain Road.

Middle Mountain Road, north of Vallecito Reservoir, is near where investigators discovered Dylan's remains.

La Plata Sheriff's Office spokesman Dan Bender told Denver7 that searches have been conducted every summer since Dylan went missing.

"This summer is no different," Bender said.

Bender said erosion can cause things that are covered to become uncovered over the year.

Dylan Redwine’s mother hopes to find new clues in son’s death this week
POSTED 9:05 PM, JULY 3, 2016, BY KEVIN TORRES, UPDATED AT 09:37PM, JULY 3, 2016

LA PLATA COUNTY, Colo. -- This week, detectives with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office will search parts of Middle Mountain, hoping to find new clues in the murder investigation of Dylan Redwine.

Middle Mountain is located near Vallecito, not far from Dylan’s father, Mark Redwine’s home. Mark Redwine was named a ‘person of interest’ in the case.

“I don`t think that the Sheriff`s office thinks there`s much of a difference between `suspect` and `person of interest’,” said Elaine Hall, in regards to the title given to her ex-husband.

Hall is Dylan's mother. She couldn’t speak about this week’s upcoming search too much. However, she did mention it is part of the on-going search investigators started in 2013.

Hall said from what she has gathered from investigators, it appears there is more evidence to be found.

“Anything we get that further solidifies the route that the detectives are going down certainly helps our case. Over the past four years there has certainly been new information. We hope this search will yield more information,” she said.

During the search, parts of Middle Mountain will be closed.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Investigators search for new evidence in Dylan Redwine case
La Plata County sheriff's deputies search Middle Mountain

UPDATED 5:44 PM MDT Jul 06, 2016

LA PLATA COUNTY, Colo. —A new search for evidence began Wednesday and will run through Monday.

Redwine disappeared in 2012 near Vallecito Lake in Colorado while visiting his father around Thanksgiving. A year later, his remains were found and his father became a person of interest. So far, his father has not been charged.

The Sheriff's Department shut down the road leading to the top of Middle Mountain and detectives combed through the woods, the trails and nearby caves searching for anything possibly related to the case. They said it's an area they've never searched before.

"There is a little bit of excitement for the big search, hoping and praying there is going to be something,” family friend Denise Hess said.

Community members hope that the new search will solve the case.

“Something that will move this case forward and bring that justice that everyone has been praying for,” Hess said.

Investigators named Redwine’s dad, Mark Redwine, a person of interest in 2015. They said that was based on evidence they had already collected, inconsistent statements and Mark's behavior throughout the investigation, but they've never called Mark a suspect or arrested him.

La Plata County sheriff's officials said they don't anticipate telling the public what they find or don't find on Middle Mountain.

There is a $50,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest in Dylan’s death.

Crews Search For Clues In Dylan Redwine Death Investigation
July 7, 2016 5:53 PM

By Matt Kroschel

DURANGO, Colo. (CBS4) – Crews from across Colorado are helping in the search for clues in the death of Dylan Redwine. The 13-year-old disappeared before Thanksgiving 2012 and his remains found months later.

Searchers working on Middle Mountain about an hour outside Durango have hundreds of acres to comb over as they hunt new leads in the nearly four-year-old murder mystery.

Dylan’s father, Mark Redwine, was named a person of interest in the case and investigators confirmed he remains the only one.

La Plata County Sheriff’s spokesman Daniel Bender says 19 people were out searching Thursday with more crews from as far away as Denver and Grand Junction and the FBI on their way to aid in the effort.

Meanwhile, Dylan’s friends and family are increasingly frustrated at the lack of an arrest.

“We know the public is frustrated that something hasn’t happened quicker, we feel that frustration and have the same,” Bender told CBS4 from the remote command post on the mountain.

Investigators looking for those vital few clues they need to solve this horrible crime and bring justice for Dylan.

“I’m confident having expertise and number of people that this will be successful for us,” Bender added.

Ongoing search aimed at ‘finding justice for Dylan’
Investigators scour area north of Vallecito Reservoir
By Shane Benjamin Herald staff writer Article Last Updated: Friday, July 08, 2016 11:17am

MIDDLE MOUNTAIN – Investigators on Thursday combed the rugged wilderness above Vallecito Reservoir in search of more evidence in the death of Dylan Redwine, a 13-year-old boy who went missing in November 2012.

La Plata County Sheriff’s Office investigators search Thursday for evidence in the continuing investigation of Dylan Redwine’s death. Searchers worked about 11 miles up Middle Mountain Road northeast of Vallecito Reservoir.

The search started Wednesday and is expected to last through Monday. Nineteen people participated in Thursday’s search, but that number is expected to grow to 50 this weekend, said Dan Bender, spokesman for the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

It is being conducted near the top of Middle Mountain, along the same road where some of the boy’s remains were found in June 2013. The Sheriff’s Office has searched the 12-mile stretch of road numerous times in the past, usually after the winter snow melts or before the snow flies, in hopes of finding newly revealed clues.

“We try to search each summer, and particularly this summer after the heavy rains that we had this spring and early summer, there’s a possibility that items that may have been covered have been cleared by erosion,” Bender said.

Over the years, investigators have found “a variety of items,” including human remains that DNA testing confirmed as belonging to Dylan. They are working in deep canyons and dense forest at about 10,800 feet in elevation, in an area northeast of the boy’s father’s home.

The Sheriff’s Office said on Thursday that the investigation won’t be considered a success until someone is arrested in the boy’s death.

“Every officer with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office is committed to finding justice for Dylan,” Bender said. “That to us means gathering all of the information possible to allow for arrest of the person or persons responsible for his death and seeing that person or persons is brought before a jury.”

Dylan went missing while on a court-ordered Thanksgiving week visit with his father, Mark Redwine, who has a home north of Vallecito.

Mark Redwine has been named a person of interest in the boy’s death based on “evidence collected, inconsistent statements and his behavior throughout the investigation,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Dylan’s death has been ruled a homicide based on evidence collected in the nearly four-year investigation, Bender said. He declined to be more specific.

Along with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, agencies involved in this week’s search include: the FBI, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Denver police, Fort Lewis College anthropologists, Boulder and Garfield county sheriff’s offices, Grand Junction police, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Upper Pine Fire Protection District and mounted patrol. Law enforcement agencies from around the state also have been involved in previous searches.

It is unlikely La Plata County Sheriff’s Office will release any information about the outcome of this week’s investigation, Bender said.

“We’ve released very little information on any of the searches that we’ve done in the past with the exception of confirming that we found human remains, and DNA proved they were Dylan’s remains,” Bender said. “We don’t want to release any information that would harm future prosecution of people who may be charged with this crime.”
