Finding Zuzu: Forensic evidence sent off to El Paso from one of the impounded cars

ALPINE -- We will be updating this blog with the latest information on the search for missing Alpine student Zuzu Verk.


Sunday 10-23 6:13PM Update:

Sheriff Ronny Dodson confirms authorities took evidence from the carpet of the impounded White Mustang. Dodson says it was sent off to a forensic lab in El Paso.

The owner of the White Mustang was questioned, then released. CBS 7's Stephanie Bennett will have more at ten.

Sunday 10-23 10:45 AM Update:
Investigators released photos of a 2016 White Ford Mustang being driven between the hours of midnight Wed. October 12 through Thursday morning October 13th. Police ask if you saw the Mustang during that time to please call at 432-837-3486.

The vehicle is in custody at Alpine PD. The license plate number is HTV-1076.

"Investigators believe this vehicle is a key piece of evidence in this case."

Sunday 10-23 10:45 AM Update:
The Alpine Police Department says that investigators have been reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance video that was obtained from local businesses and citizens with CCTV access.


APD says these videos have provided 'key evidence' in this investigation, and also say they are reaching out to other local citizens who have CCTV surveillance cameras.

Anyone that may have video footage from the early morning hours of Wednesday October 12 are urged to call Alpine Police at 432-837-3486.

Saturday 10-22 7:05 PM Update:
The Alpine Police Department is seeking additional information related to the disappearance of Zuzu Verk.

The Alpine Police Department has taken the truck from its location.

A search warrant has been obtained and a forensic team is now processing the vehicle for evidence.

Law Enforcement is seeking information about this vehicle’s movement during the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 12.

The vehicle is described a 2005 Ford F-150 grey in color and may have had the magnetic decals removed during the time in question.

The date was Tuesday night, she missed her mid term and work on Wednesday.
Chris said he was with Robert Wednesday night.
Zuzu wasn't reported missing until Friday.

If he's being honest, I think they are probably tracking all of Robert's movements since Zuzu was last seen; and that's how this friend became involved.

It might be interesting to know how Wednesday night came about, was it planned in advance, did Chris just happen to be in town, or did Robert give him a call so he'd be busy in case anyone started looking for her...?

The Alpine Police Department is asking for the public's help involving missing Alpine woman Zuzu Verk.

Police are seeking anyone who may have seen a grey 2006 Jeep Liberty and a 2004 Mazda Miata covertable with a beige top being driven between the hours of midnight and 10:00 AM on Wednesday.

Finding Zuzu: Boyfriend's attorney meets with Verks

ALPINE -- The investigation continues in the disappearance of Zuzu Verk.

Yesterday, Alpine Police got a hold of a grey Ford F-150 pickup truck, and today, another vehicle has made its way into the case.

A white 2016 Ford Mustang is now in question, and investigators are calling it a key piece of evidence in the case.

Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson says evidence found on the vehicle’s carpet has been collected and sent to a forensics lab in El Paso.

Before the white Mustang and the grey pickup truck, a grey Jeep was in question. Investigators have tracked down all these vehicles thanks to surveillance footage.

“We don’t know that these individuals weren’t thinking ‘well let’s watch out for security cameras,’ and you know a lot of our convenient stores have them,” Dodson said.

 

“It’s remarkably unbelievable how many people have security cameras that we didn’t even think about that are out on the roads. Some of the stuff that has come in already has been very pertinent,” he said.

It’s important to note that Dodson says the owner of the Mustang is cooperative—he was questioned and agreed to being submitted to a polygraph.

But with all these vehicles tied in to the Zuzu Verk case, still there is only one person of interest—Zuzu’s boyfriend, who the Verks call Robert Fabian. And he remains silent.

Alpine Police tell CBS 7 that Fabian cooperated the one time when he was questioned just days after Zuzu’s disappearance.

Then, Fabian lawyered up.

CBS 7 spoke with Attorney Liz Rogers yesterday on the phone. She told us she’s proud to represent Robert and that he is “distraught” over Zuzu’s disappearance.

And for the Verk family, yesterday’s pain is frustration today.

“We want to see him down there answering every single question that the police have for him, and he’s not doing that,” Zuzu’s brother Miles said.

And while Rogers says she’s leading her own investigation, the Verks want to see collaboration.

“We were told that we could speak to this lawyer, and we’d love to do that,” Glenn Verk said.

“Right. She did extend that invitation to me,” Lori Verk said, agreeing with her husband, adding, “and yet here we are, asking, please come talk to us.”

Just minutes after CBS 7 spoke with the Verks at the fire station, Rogers showed up to talk to them, but the Verks left unsatisfied.

Zuzu’s father told CBS 7 he asked Rogers why Fabian isn’t cooperating with police, and why he hasn’t shown up to any of the numerous search parties.

Verk told CBS 7 that Rogers “tap danced” around his questions.

As Rogers was leaving, our reporter asked if she’d like to give us her side of the story, but she declined to comment.
