Person of interest in Somer slaying fighting extradition; no longer set to appear in court
Jarred Harrell is charged in a Clay County warrant with child pornography
By Jim Schoettler * Story updated at 10:24 PM on Monday, Feb. 15, 2010

The Clay County man named as a person of interest in the Somer Thompson slaying is fighting extradition from Mississippi, where police arrested him last week on child-pornography charges.

Jarred Mitchell Harrell, 24, is demanding that authorities show there is probable cause for him to be charged with child pornography, Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Sheriff Ward Calhoun told the Times-Union. Authorities will also be required to match Harrell’s identity to that of the man named in the warrant.

To extradite Harrell, Florida investigators will have to submit documents proving probable cause and other matters to Gov. Charlie Crist. Crist can then send a governor’s warrant to Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour demanding that Harrell be brought back to Clay County.

Calhoun said he expected Harrell to be back in Florida as early as next week.

"I've never seen where there never was one granted," Calhoun said.

Harrell will continue sitting in a jail isolation cell, where he's been held since Thursday on $1 million bail in connection with the child-pornography charges.

Mississippi does not require that court hearings be held in extradition matters as long as the paperwork is approved. Though Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie said last week Harrell will make a court appearance, Calhoun said that won't happen in Mississippi.

"We're honoring the warrants that have come to us from Clay County and we're holding him on those warrants until arrangements are made for him to be extradited to the state of Florida," Calhoun said.

Federal agents arrested Harrell in Meridian, Miss., which is the Lauderdale County seat. He had been staying with an aunt for several weeks.

Harrell is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Facility in the city of 40,000 in east-central Mississippi. He is charged with 29 counts of child pornography after his two Orange Park roommates told police they discovered graphic images on his computer and computer discs in August and turned them over to police.

Sheriff: Suspect Fighting Extradition In Girl's Murder
Tuesday, February 16, 2010 5:14:04 AM
MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - Lauderdale County Sheriff Billie Sollie says a man wanted for questioning in the death of a 7-year-old Florida girl is fighting extradition from Mississippi.

Jarred Mitchell Harrell was arrested Thursday in Meridian. He faces 29 counts of possession of child pornography in Florida. He was being held on $1 million bond.

He's been named a "person of interest" in the October 2009 death of Somer Thompson of Orange Park, Fla. Harrell has not been charged in her death.

Sollie told The Meridian Star that officials in Florida will have to file documentation so a governor's warrant for Harrell's arrest can be issued. At that point, Sollie said Harrell will be returned to Florida to face the charges.

What a total waste of time, court time, and court resources. Its a sure loser. Like this pervert pos.
I completely agree - what a waste!  Says a lot if you ask me - Florida is a death penalty state and he knows he is going down. As far as I am concerned the sooner they put the needle in this guys arm the better!

I haven't posted on Scared Monkeys in quite the while, but I'm glad to see some progress happening in Somer's case. Hers was yet another case I thought would have an arrest quickly and did not. Which is so frustrating. Well, reading that arrest report made my stomach do flips and I felt much anger building inside me. I understand that something was blacked out, saying they suspected he may have had some pictures of someone he knew, but do you guys think the rest of the porn could have been made by him? Or just stuff he downloaded & saved? I got sick reading about the pictures of a girl 6-8 and immediately thought, "What if it's Somer?"

No matter who the child is, I am beyond fuming about it and the rest of the disgusting findings on his computer. I have said it before (as I know many others here have) and will say it again. If these disgusting *ssholes cannot be controlled (and really, they are not and cannot) then regular folks will start taking action into their own hands, because I know I am not the only one who is filled with anger at the thought of  what is happening to these children and wants these pigs to pay.  If one of these child molestors was my neighbor I would gladly go to jail for beating the hell out of them and gladly tell the cops and judge what I did and why. I would also tell them I'm not sorry nor do I regret it.

By the way, Hello Monkeys.

EverySunset hope you are doing good  So very frustrating, I pray little Somer's pics aren't anywhere, and that the poor little soul didn't suffer too badly  It does appear on the arrest warrant, that one of the pics may have been a relative or family friend maybe of this creep. I could barely read that, actually when I did, I logged off for the night, it is very disturbing.

Hope you're feeling better today, No Rose. Sometimes I wish I could scrub my brain clean of things I have read. Sometimes I wish there was a delete button for my brain, but then I guess I would just be uninformed.

You and me both, that's the problem, I read some of this terrible stuff, and it just eats away at me. That's why at night, I watch nonsense on tv, so I don't have to think.

Everysunset excellent post and I would do the same thing it wouldn't matter to me if they threw me in jail or not - if they aren't going to protect our kids then I guess we have no choice but to take matters into our own hands.

Not me, if it is him, I don't want him thinking about her ever again.

Hi FBI...glad to meet ya!

unfortunately, I don't think that this guy or pervs like him have a conscience so he would not be haunted or tormented by her memory....My fear is that he would have other types of memory of her and that makes me totally peed off!!!   but I get what you mean....

Pervs like this are never tormented by the thought of what they have done...they only savor the memories in perverted ways.

Extradition sought in connection with girl's death

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gov. Charlie Crist is asking Mississippi officials to extradite a man who is a "person of interest" in the slaying of a 7-year-old girl.

Crist asked Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour on Thursday to extradite Jarred Mitchell Harrell to Florida, where he faces 29 counts of possession of child pornography.

Authorities say Harrell is wanted for questioning in Somer Thompson's October death. Her body was found in a south Georgia landfill two days after she disappeared while walking home from school in Orange Park, near Jacksonville.

An unemployed 24-year-old restaurant worker who lived on and off in Somer's neighborhood, Harrell was arrested last week in Meridian, Miss., where is being held on a $1 million bond. Barbour's office had no immediate comment.

Howard Harrell, a Corrections Officer from Lucedale is Jarred's bio father.

A lot of the family background included in this article.

Haleigh's, Somer's Families Get Support
Justice Coalition Gathers Local Families Of Victims Of Crime

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- With a picture of her granddaughter sitting on a table, Marie Griffis wore her pain on her face.

Her granddaughter, 6-year-old Satsuma girl Haleigh Cummings, has been missing for more than a year, and she still hasn't gotten the answer to this question:

"She really was missing. All I could think was, 'Why? Why her?'" Griffis said.

The Justice Coalition gathered local families of victims of crime Thursday to offer their support. The families have similar stories and have at times been desperate for help.

Phillip Bowling, the grandfather of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, an Orange Park girl who went missing in October and was found dead in a landfill days later, spoke about his family's lowest moment: when he got the call his granddaughter was missing.

He and his wife, Debbie Bowling, talked to Channel 4 after Thursday's event, explaining the road hasn't gotten any easier since it was announced last week that a person of interest had been arrested in Somer's murder case. In fact, the Bowlings said when the news broke that 24-year-old Jarred Harrell was in custody, things got harder for their daughter and Somer's mom, Diena Thompson.

"She is not doing well," Debbie Bowling said. "The news was bittersweet. It's been very hard for her especially."

"I don't need the incidental news," Phillip Bowling said. "I don't need to know what's going on to get that to happen. I just need to know that it has happened."

The Bowlings want an arrest in their granddaughter's case, and they want to know what happened Somer.

"Everything. We want to know everything. So many questions," Debbie Bowling said.

The Bowlings said they find strength in each other, and they stay close as they wait. And at this point, they said there's no judgment.

"(Diena) doesn't want to point fingers at anybody because fingers have been pointed to us, and she doesn't want to do that to somebody who's already done it to us," Debbie Bowling said.

Phillip Bowling said the Justice Coalition will continue to be a source of support for the family because they're still a long way from any real closure.

Mississippi authorities ready to extradite Jarred Harrell to face Clay child porn charges
Sheriff waiting for word from Clay investigators on when they'll pick up the unemployed laborer, who has also been named a man of interest in the Somer Thompson slaying

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour has given the approval to extradite Jarred Harrell to face child pornography charges in Clay County, where he has also been named as a man of interest in the Somer Thompson slaying.

Lauderdale County (Miss.) Sheriff Billy Sollie told the Times-Union tonight he's simply waiting for Clay officials to inform him when they intend to have Harrell picked up. The 24-year-old Clay man has been in a Meridian, Miss., jail since Feb. 11 after being arrested on a warrant charging him with 29 counts of child pornography. Those charges followed the discovery by Harrell's former Orange Park roommates of graphic pictures of girls on his laptop and computer discs.

Clay County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Mary Justino said she hasn't heard about any progress in the extradition proceedings and would likely issue a press release once more is known.

Mississippi officials said Harrell could be returned to Florida by next week. Gov. Charlie Crist sent a request for extradition to Barbour yesterday. Harrell has refused to sign an extradition waiver and remains in jail on $1 million bail.

Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler has named Harrell a person of interest in Somer's slaying, but Beseler has refused to discuss evidence in the case. Harrell at one time lived along the same route taken by Somer, 7,   when she disappeared Oct. 19 while walking home from Grove Park Elementary School. Her body was found in a Georgia landfill two days later.
