National Child Safety Group Offers Advice
Representative Offers Tips To Keep Children Safe In Wake Of Somer's Death

POSTED: Friday, October 30, 2009
UPDATED: 8:42 pm EDT October 30, 2009

ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- Days after the burial of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, a national child safety group is in town offering the community and the Clay County Sheriff's Office some advice.

"It's frightening, and so the best thing we can do is educate children in prevention rather than reaction," said Jack Weisenborn, a representative from the Child Lures Prevention team.

Weisenborn has been involved in children safety programs for 30 years.

When Somer disappeared last week, Weisenborn's group from Vermont sent him to Orange Park to help. Its goal is to prevent tragedies like Somer's death from happening again.

"If it doesn't feel right in their stomach or their heart, then don't go with an adult," Weisenborn said. "They learn as a tip coming into Halloween to ask a trusted adult such as their parents or their school teacher."

Clay County Tip Line: 877-227-6911 (cart@claysheriff.com) or Crimestoppers: 866-845-TIPSTotal of $35,850 in rewards available.

Weisenborn said the key is to teach children and even teens what to watch out for.

He said there are 16 specific lures of which children are to be aware at all times. Among them are showing children affection, using pets or assistance in finding a pet or a person, saying they're an authority figure such as a police officer, bribing a child with money or candy, reporting a fake emergency and even using threats.

"If you're approached by an adult, back away," Weisenborn said. "For example, an adult doesn't ask a child for directions. Go the other direction. Run the opposite away. If someone tries to grab a child, the child needs to yell, 'Help, this is not my father,' 'Help, this is not my mother.'"

"It's very scary to let them go anywhere without watching them, even at the playground," mother Sharon Stickler said.

Stickler said the tragedy surrounding Somer reinforces her belief that her children shouldn't be out of her sight. She has two children, including a 4-year-old, and she admits they are so kind they could easily be lured.

That's why she tries to teach them how to run away.

"We teach them to scream if somebody comes up to them to ask them anything," Stickler said. "If it's somebody they don't know, we tell them scream loud and run to somebody they do know."

To see all 16 tips and more advice from Child Lures Prevention, go to http://www.childluresprevention.com/.

In the search for Somer's killer, investigators said more than 2,300 tips have been called in from people locally and across the country. More than $35,000 is being offered in reward money.

Police said Friday that the owner of the home searched where Somer was last seen has hired an off-duty officer to keep an eye on the home.

Anyone with any information that can help police is asked to call the Clay County tip line at 877-227-6911 or Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.

Good Morning, beautiful pic Brandi, she sure was a cute little girl    I've been thinking a lot about her twin and the special bond twins have, so very sad.

peacelove76  thank-you for all that info. The neighborhood looks very nice to me. And I sure hope an announcement will be made soon. I think everywhere there aren't as many trick or treaters out, so sad, just seems like everything is being taken away from the kids

Hi NRCG....Our biggest church here in town does a program called Trunk or Treat for the kids. They have games, hayrides and food. They have candy booths set up all over the church. It is just so dangerous for the kids going door to door anymore. Last year in a town about 50 miles from me a 12 year old knocked on a door and the guy inside started shooting and killed the child.

Hi Darla,  my church does the same thing, and I think many churches in the area offer the same thing, but we still had about 70 trick or treaters here last night.  Most of those under 12 had parents with them and watched the whole time.   When the kids get taller than I am, I turn off the light!

Good Morning Monkeys. Went out on my adventures this morning. Couple of things to note:
1) No cop at 1080 Gano (they may only show up when it get's dark out to protect the house)
2) No cop at Somer's house
3) 2 Construction dumpsters on Miller street in the house next to the Pentecostal Church (I have the google picture and also took a picture)
4) No dumpsters or construction dumpsters on Bay Circle S. (Where RSO Cruise lives) I would have taken a picture of the house but the creep was outside
5) I looked more carefully at the 1080 dumpster as I walked by it. There are a lot of burnt things in there (wood, etc). I think these things were in the bottom of the dumpster originally and when everything was taken out, it was the last to go back in which is why it is on top. I would have taken a picture, but I am afraid they may have some type of surveillance cameras, LOL and I don't want to go to jail as someone who is "too interested" in the case.
6) The church at the corner of Debarry and Gano is vacant. You would think at 9:00am there would be some service going on, but nothing happening.
7) The Pentecostal church does not have any "treatment programs" going on in that location at this time. There is however a "Grace House" up the road further at 1724 Village Way.
Cool Orange Park Elementary that is mentioned in the previous posts the temporary Pentecostal meeting place is actually on Plainfield Ave. This is not the school that Somer went to.

ok that's all I can think of for now. Here are the pics of the Miller house construction

Very intersting and good info.  Are people still living in the Miller house?  It looks like a sofa in the window.  Those are two large dumpsters.  I wish we knew where the body was placed..in which dumpster and the location.

AZ - It looks like there are still people living in it. I saw the couch too, but can't be 100% positive. It is directly across from the school though.

and really close to that church!  I am surprised there isn't a fence, but maybe there aren't a lot of fences there.  In AZ we put cinder block fences around every back yard.   I didn't like the look of it when we moved here in 1990...but now I love the security and privacy it provides.

Good morning all Monkeys and thank you very much twocents for your time, pics, and info.

Soot, soot found on the body of Somer was reported on Friday.

I am sure that when LE was searching neighbors homes they were looking for spots and or residue of soot.

There is still probably soot on some things around 1080 Gano Ave. I don't see where the perp would have had time to put the body in the dumpster there and then move it elsewhere.  I wonder if any items that would have soot on them been moved out in the area in the midst of all the trees.

Ok, what is the address and or name of the  church at Deberry and Gano?

Heart - The name of the church at Debarry and Gano is something like "Faith of God Community Church". You know, I was wondering if there was a crawl space under the house (the burnt side) that she was hidden in until the time was right to transport her to another dumpster.

Hi Monkeys.

twocents thank you for the great photos. i have been thinking it is possible the perp placed Somer in a box that had burnt items in it from the house. twocents how close are the nearest apartments or the condos in the area. Nobody would find it suspicious for people to be taking out their trash to the dumpsters in an apartment type setting or condo the night before trash day.

It seems more likely than her being dumped elsewhere and noticed.

Brandi I lost the page with those avatars you made me. I cant decide on one so I'll let you pick one for me. lol Thank you again.
