Exclusive: Woman in mobile home park reported missing suitcase
by Jennifer Wadsworth
Huckaby then set the packed suitcase on the driveway by her dark purple Kia SUV — the same one FBI agents and Tracy police detectives towed and searched Tuesday night. But she forgot her cell phone and keys inside the house, so she went back in for about 15 minutes to find them. She couldn’t, so she picked up the spare key and left.
She forgot about the suitcase and left it on the driveway.
When she got to the church, Huckaby’s grandmother called and said she found her keys and cell phone.
Huckaby said that’s when she realized she had left the $200 suitcase outside. When her family went out to get it, they said it was gone.
“So I talked to the assistant manager at the mobile home park and asked him to keep an eye out for this suitcase; someone took it,” Huckaby said. “I also told some older kids to look out for it. I didn’t think much then, because, you know, kids were getting out of school, and I thought that maybe someone, maybe someone walking by, just took it.”
http://www.tracypress.com/pages/full_story?article-Woman%20in%20mobile%20home%20park%20reported%20missing%20suitcase%20=&page_label=home&id=2298054-Woman+in+mobile+home+park+reported+missing+suitcase&widget=push&instance=home_news_lead_story&open=&
We don't know what the grandmother said to investigators regarding the cellphone and keys.
Only what Melissa said happened.
She told several mistruths to the press. She is much like Casey.
I do not believe that Melissa would not have related that account to authorities if she knew it was not going to be backed up by her Grandmother. Her words could be so easily refuted.
Considering Melissa was only detained this morning ... I can only assume that her Grandmother backed her up in regards to calling Melissa at the church and informing her that the cell and keys had been found.
This is all very damning IF the cell and keys were found in the suitcase along with Sandra's remains.

LOL! Great story.
in regard to children eating "drugs" and thinking they are candy.
My little brother ate my aunt's water pills and her face powder.
My older brother ate/munched on a broken coke bottle without cutting his mouth or his insides.
I was normal and just stuck a pea up my nose.

This is difficult to believe that this woman did this all by herself.
Any why was she questioned about drugging children before and nothing happened ?
..
I know of a case here where a private daycare provider bit a kid.
Daycare agency contacted. They sent the pictures to a doctor who looked at the mark, says, adult bite mark. Assault charges laid. Woman denied it. No witnesses except the other little kids. After much legal wrangling etc. the charges were dropped as the case was weak. However, the lady is on a child abuse registry, can't have contact with kids. No more daycare at her house. If she ever tries to do any type of paid or not paid work with kids, too bad, get away from the cookie jar b&8th.
..
Drugging kids ? WhyTF was she even allowed near her own kid ? What is up with her damn GP's ? Enablers ? Blind ? There is a story here and if I lived in Tracy, I would demand some answers. Who are the Tracy 60 ? Why are they still around on the loose ?
Maybe if it was revealed who each of the Tracy 60 are ... you would find your answer.
Can you image if you were made aware that your child/grandchild's Karate instructor had not only be questioned but had admitted to kissing a 6 year old little girl on the lips in a public swimming pool.
When do the rights of parents to be informed ... the rights of children to be protected ... enter into the equation.

Tracygirl....Is this Police Chief fairly new or has she been the chief for a while?
The reason I am wondering is because if these other offenses (Sandra getting kissed by that pervert who still has contact w/children and MH supposedly drugging another 7 yr old) were 'taken so lightly'..then impeachment proceedings might be in order there. However, if she is fairly new....maybe you have some 'hope' of getting that area cleaned up.
Thank you for your imput...most enlightening. Prayers for you and yours.
She is a new police chief. I honestly do not know why the last one left. Many are hoping this one can help to straigthen out the problems they seem to have.
I do not believe it is corruption but rather a lack of experience in how to deal with high profile crimes or crimes which are serious in a criminal nature. Do you know for months our banks were getting robbed, one right after another, why? Tracy is known for not being able to solve serious crimes.
It is like they have the attitude, well that can't happen here, or it can't be that big of a deal, this is tracy, things like this happen in the bay area.
If you read some of the comments on the Tracy press sight you will see this attitude in many of the citizens. We have had now 2 very serious crimes against children in this city which seem to be connected to a child porn influence. it can't end here. I keep saying that don't I?
Ineptness IMO...is just a cousin to corruption...same outcome. Perhaps the other Chief was offered to resign. It looks like this Chief means business...no offense to the men...but, am thinking a woman would be more aggressive in offering protection for children.
Now that you all have the FBI and other State Agencies there I think you will have a head start on cleaning things up there. It must be very difficult for a small town to get assistance/attention from those entities with the resources to investigate porn rings/pedophiles without some high-profile crime to bring them in.
Here in New Orleans, we had a very widespread police corruption problem and we finally got a new Police Chief from outside the area who called in the FBI to help clean it up. We have 2 (that I know of) of the former cops on death row..and many in prison thank goodness.

I'm confused I think.
How do we know what account she gave to the police?
We know what she said in interviews to the press.
We also know the police said what she said to the press and what she said to police were inconsistent which is one of the reasons they called her in just before she was arrested.

A lot of this is still not making sense to me.
Could Melissa have been involved (either through intimidation or on her own) in some sort of child porn ring. Being a woman kids would be more trusting of her. With previous allegations of a child leaving her presence and turning up with drugs in their system, could that have been at the beginning of her involvement? She may be the low and or new person on the totem pole who's main purpose was to lure young females/males, drug them and then bring them to the others. Whoever she was working with could possible then pose these children for pictures/videos. But this time something went wrong. The kidnapping charge is what gets me.
Did she move her after drugging her to the church where the staging for porn was then preformed? Would this constitute kidnapping?
What if she was drugged and when checked on no pulse could be found. Panic sets in and Melissa gets rid of her, but in fact she was still alive. If the autopsy shows water in the lungs would this then be kidnapping as she was taken to the pond while still alive?
I am still wondering if the church was equipped with audio/visual. This would really set my hinky meter off.
As for Melissa being the only one charged - was it specifically stated "for this case"? Does that mean they have uncovered something much bigger and treating it as as separate investigation? Melissa could be singing about it under a plea agreement.
Still too many things do not connect for me on this. Just throwing some thoughts I have on this.
All I know is that my heart goes out for the entire community and her family.

I've been thinking about the developments of last night and today and it's a good feeling to know I'm not alone in my thoughts.
As for anyone being shocked that a Sunday school teacher could or would commit a crime like this, well, they're just not livin' in the real world. We all know anyone can commit a crime like this. Deranged people are in every profession. I think I may have work with some of them.
Now, as far as not tipping off the suspected pedophile ring - non-sense. It's been known for at least 10 or so days that this ring exists and most in it would have wiped their hard drives clean if they were in any way associated with Melissa Huckaby. Once they heard she and her family were being investigated and if they were in any way, shape or form involved with her, well, you can kiss that evidence goodbye. Pedophile don't want to go to jail. That separates them for what they DO, which is molesting kids. No one is so stoopid to leave evidence lying about. They certainly have been given a huge heads up.
I'd also like to say I agree with everything Janet's said today. But that's not unusual at all. Good Job Janet!!

Klaas - thanks for fixing my typo!
I have been thinking that maybe MH was using Sandra as a sort of babysitter/playmate for her daughter instead of them being really good friends. I have 2 kiddos that are the same age difference and they will only play together when absolutely desperate!! I'm just sayin'...
If we knew nothing else about the church, the searches, the shed, the digging, and especially the prior investigation regarding drugging another child, then I may just think that Sandra had done something to irritate MH and she just flipped out and hurt her. I also thought about a revenge angle regarding the cat traps by Sandra's grandfather. It just seems rather far fetched to think that MH just killed her for no other purpose than to kill her. There's more to the story, IMO, and I really hope the family gets some answers.
I hope the good people of Tracy demand to know more about the Tracy60 investigation and demand that something be done. I had a situation in my child's school where a teacher was sharing a very inappropriate play with her class and I am absolutely shocked that she thought nobody would mind. I am going before our school board to lodge a formal complaint and so far I am the only parent doing so. My kids attend the best school district in my city and surrounding cities, we are in the Bible Belt, and most families attend church. Still, I am the only one protesting. I am not sure if it's because other parent's aren't hearing the stories I get from my child, or if they just don't want to make waves. I will know soon, but just get really depressed when I think about it. I can't even imagine what I'd do if I knew about a child porn ring and my local LE wasn't doing anything/enough about it. ((((hugs)))) to our friends in Tracy during this horrible time and to Sandra's family and friends.

'Disbelief'
by Jennifer Wadsworth1 hr 43 mins ago
The arrest of a Sunday school teacher suspected of kidnapping and murdering 8-year-old Tracy girl Sandra Cantu came as an “absolute shock” to the victim’s family, they told reporters this morning.
“I can’t imagine a mother doing this to a child,” said Sandra’s uncle, Joe Chavez, of 28-year-old murder suspect Melissa Huckaby, who has a 5-year-old daughter of her own. “There will never be closure.”
The arrest brings at least some reprieve to an emotional ordeal that has gripped Sandra's family, Tracy and the nation since Sandra’s March 27 disappearance. Farmworkers on Monday found the little girl’s fully clothed body stuffed inside a black suitcase — a piece of luggage Huckaby says belonged to her.
Police said they found the spot where Huckaby allegedly killed the Jacobson Elementary School second-grader who used to play with Huckaby’s own daughter, but they refused to disclose the location.
There are no other suspects and no more arrests are expected, said police spokesman Sgt. Tony Sheneman.
The suspect never once mentioned a motive in the course of her interview with investigators earlier this morning. Police said at one point she asked for an attorney but then changed her mind and kept talking to detectives. She was read her rights twice, Sheneman said.
“I can’t begin to theorize what her motive was,” said Sheneman today, at times fighting back emotion. “Sandra was a very close friend with her daughter.”
When asked what the family's reaction was to Huckaby's arrest, he answered, "Disbelief."
Police had since Monday tried to pin down Sandra’s killer. They interviewed everyone in Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park, where Sandra lived with her grandparents, mother and siblings. Huckaby lived there, too, with her daughter and grandparents just five doors down from Sandra’s house.
Police served several search warrants, towed cars, questioned hundreds of people and never named a suspect — until Friday night’s arrest. Huckaby’s grandparents run a church down the street from the park, where Huckaby said she had taught Sunday school for six months.
Investigators interviewed Huckaby twice before Thursday, they said. The asked her to come in for a third interview after Huckaby in a Tracy Press article shared information inconsistent with what she told police, Sheneman said.
“The fact that a lot of the statements made to the Tracy Press conflicted with other reports … brought to light inconsistencies” that prompted police to ask her in for another interview, Sheneman said at a press briefing this morning.
Huckaby on Friday afternoon spoke for more than 40 minutes to the Tracy Press about how she believed someone took her black rolling Eddie Bauer suitcase from her driveway the same day and in the same hour Sandra was last seen alive.
She flatly denied she had a criminal record, despite court papers showing she was due in court for sentencing after pleading no contest to a felony burglary/robbery and a misdemeanor petty theft. She also denied having graduated from West High School in 1998, despite school district records that say she did.
Court papers also show that two psychiatrists had to interview Huckaby to see if she was fit to stand trial on charges that she stole from Target last November. The deemed her fit for trial. She spent some time in 2006 behind bars in Los Angeles County for property theft, court papers show, yet she denied that, too.
In an interview with police that began at 7 p.m. and ended with her arrest at 11:55 p.m. Friday, she shared details about Sandra’s disappearance and subsequent murder that gave cops probable cause to arrest her shortly before midnight Friday, Sheneman said.
She blatantly lied to the few reporters she talked to Friday, he said earlier. That’s what led to the extra scrutiny.
During the five-hour interview with investigators, Sheneman said Huckaby was "very relaxed for a bit, then she became very emotional, and then she became relaxed again, and then became resigned to what was happening.”
Police were unsure until the suspect’s public admission to the Tracy Press on Friday that the black suitcase containing Sandra’s remains belonged to Huckaby, Sheneman said.
Huckaby was booked at the San Joaquin County Jail where she is held without bail. An arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Manteca, but the date might change.
Dozens of onlookers joined reporters this morning to hear Sheneman talk about the break in the case that led to Huckaby’s arrest.
Several bystanders said they were first of all stunned that the alleged killer is a woman. Statistically, in the case of a murder and abduction, that’s unlikely, Sheneman said.
“It’s an anomaly in the murder of a child,” he said.
But more than shock, friends and family of the murdered girl said it’s the grief that’s so overwhelming.
“Nothing we have done and nothing we can say will return Sandra to the community,” Sheneman said. “There’s no joy in this.”
A few people burst into tears after the announcement, including 26-year-old Amber Austin, of Stockton. As a mother of two children, the arrest of a woman Sunday school teacher only made her more fearful for her own family’s safety, she said.
“The frightening thing is that they knew each other,” she said of Huckaby and Sandra. “It’s hard for me to think that here this person she knew could be responsible. I mean we don’t know, but she could be. That’s scary.”
Galeana Alcaraz, 10, went to school with Sandra. Her eyes welled up with tears when she talked about the past couple weeks, filled, she said, with uncertainty and then sadness.
“I used to play with her,” said the fifth-grader, who stood calmly outside the mobile home park with her family. “Sandra was kind and funny. She was a good person.”
Sandra’s uncle spoke to reporters after the press conference this morning to say that his family will never feel fully satisfied even if authorities convict someone.
“We will never feel closure,” Joe Chavez said, calling for the death penalty for whoever murdered his niece. “We will have to live the rest of our lives without Sandra.”

I have thought the same thing about the age difference, it was said Sandra was friendly with adults so maybe she was spending more time with Melissa than the 5 yr.old

CA Kidnapping laws:
Kidnapping is forcibly, or by using fear, taking or holding or detaining a person, and carrying the person from one place to another. Kidnapping by persuading, enticing, or seducing a child under the age of 14 with misrepresentations or false promises also constitutes criminal kidnapping under California law. The California kidnapping law also specifically prohibits kidnapping of any person adult or child by making misrepresentations or false promises, if the intent is to sell the person into slavery or involuntary servitude or to use or employ the person for one's own purposes. Kidnapping for ransom or extortion, and kidnapping during a carjacking, are more severe crimes that carry additional penalties. All forms of kidnapping are felonies.

Sandra was dead before she was reported missing.
Suitcase was left in the driveway then gone when she got back, of course it was. But did Melissa move it? She's only 125 pounds. Sure adrenoline would help. Maybe that's why the suitcase was so close to the road in the pond, she couldn't throw it far because of the weight.
What about the beige truck that was by the pond?

Police were unsure until the suspect’s public admission to the Tracy Press on Friday that the black suitcase containing Sandra’s remains belonged to Huckaby, Sheneman said.
Tantamount to a confession... but the police weren't closing in on anyone (her) til this point?
Gawd help us all
There is a list on the last page of issues Melissa Huckaby had on her plate.
