Thank-you JessStar, and I really have a sick feeling there are pictures of little Somer also

You know, NRCG, every one of these cases takes a little piece of me.  I am so worried about spring and summer coming because I'm so afraid that we will have more children victimized by monsters like this; more children that will senselessly lose their lives.  And there's seemingly nothing we can do about it but try to drum into people's heads that you CAN'T TURN YOUR BACK FOR ONE SECOND!  Talk about a feeling of helplessness.

Neighbors: Jarred Harrell's Mom Leaves Town
Taren Reed     Created: 3/26/2010 11:31:55 AM    Updated: 3/26/2010 11:45:24 AM

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. -- Jarred Harrell's mother, Annis Dailey, has packed her car and left town, according to neighbors.

Neighbors along Nassau Oaks Drive where Harrell's mother lives said Dailey packed her car and left early this morning. No one answered the door.

Neighbors said they are hopeful Somer Thompson's killer has been caught. Harrell has been arrested and charged with premeditated murder in the death of Somer, according to a source close to the case.

JARRED HARRELL CHARGED IN MURDER OF SOMER THOMPSON, ANNOUNCEMENT EXPECTED AT NOON

Harrell has also been charged with sexual battery on a victim under 12, and lewd and lascivious battery, according to a sheriff's office listing released early today of Thursday arrests, said the Times-Union, First Coast News' news partner. The listing did not say who Harrell was accused of killing.

Somer, 7, disappeared while walking home from school in October 2009. Investigators found her body in a landfill in Georgia a few days later. Her murder has remained unsolved.

Not to gloat, but I occasionally get these things right.

Today is a bitter sweet day.  While being reminded of information we'd prefer not to hear, we learn that Somer will receive the Justice she deserves.  I'll make another prediction with the home I'm right.  Go back and look at the photos of this piece of crap.  You'll see a dead man walking.  This will be an easy DP case.  Because I bet you a dollar to a donut this freak has photographs of little Somer.  I hate him. Hate him hate him hate him.   Did I say I hate him?  No good for nothing piece of . . .
You said exactly how I feel too Jess.  It is so difficult to deal with anger this causes.

And she was his alibi?  Right.  She should leave town.

Man Charged in Murder of Fla. Girl Found in Landfill

AP

Investigators have charged Jarred Mitchell Harrell with the murder of Somer Thompson, who disappeared while walking home from school last year.

ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A 24-year-old unemployed restaurant worker was charged Friday with murder in the slaying of a 7-year-old Florida girl whose body was found in a Georgia landfill after she disappeared walking home from school, authorities said.

Jarred Mitchell Harrell was charged in the death of Somer Thompson, who went missing Oct. 19. Her lifeless legs were discovered two days later in a landfill about 50 miles from Orange Park.

During a press conference at the same church where Somer's memorial service was held in October, Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said detectives used DNA evidence, witnesses and statements from Harrell himself to solve the case.

"Our collective resolve to bring Somer's killer to justice is the only light in the darkness caused by this tragedy," Beseler said as about 50 members of "Team Somer" -- the sheriff's office investigators and staff who worked the case -- stood by.

The rest was snipped.

This is the full text of Sheriff Rick Besler's prepared statement:
158 days ago our community was rocked by the brutal murder of a seven year old child on her way home from school. The randomness of such an act occurring in an otherwise safe neighborhood affected the sense of security for so many and sparked an intense interest in this case around the county and indeed around the world.
In the face of such fear and tragic loss a sense of community solidarity emerged as we all wrapped our arms around the family of Somer Thompson and each other to grieve. The outpouring of support and generosity and collective resolve to bring Somer's killer to justice was the only light in the darkness caused by this tragedy.
I stand before you today surrounded by this group of law enforcement professionals we call "Team Somer" to announce to you that Jarred Harrell has now been formally charged with the murder of Somer Thompson.
The filing of these charges would not have been possible without the dedicated and tireless work done by these individuals you see here today and countless others who work behind the scenes. Before I go further with the details in the case, I want to recognize my colleagues who join me today in making this announcement.
1)State Attorney Angela Corey
2)SAC Jim Casey, FBI
3)SAC Dominick Pape, FDLE
4)Assistant Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Mike Bunk, U.S. Marshal's Service
5)ASAC Norm Kelly, NCIS
6)Director Steve Nelson, SAO
7)Major Jimmy Wilson, CCSO
8)Capt. David Senters, Chief of Detectives
9) Lt. Joe Bucci, Robbery Homicide Unit
10)Sgt. Dan Mahla, Robbery Homicide Unit
11)Sgt. Wayne McKinney, Robbery Homicide Unit
12)Det. Ken West, Lead Detective, Robbery Homicide Unit
There are many other agencies and individuals who assisted us in various stages of the search for Somer or the follow-up investigations, some of who are here today, but this group I just recognized were with us here at CCSO from day 1 until today.
In my 36 years in law enforcement, I have never seen this many agencies work together for this long with such harmony. It is a testament to the professionalism and focus on the mission this team has.
Our charges filed today against Jarred Harrell allege that he contacted Somer as she walked home from school on October 19, 2009, passing by the house Harrell lived in on Gano Avenue. We have evidence that will show Harrell assaulted Somer, then killed her and dumped her body in a dumpster which ultimately ended up in the landfill in Folkston, GA, where it was recovered.
Harrell's name first surfaced not long after Somer's death as one of over 4,000 leads given to Team Somer in the days and weeks after the crime. As we began to scrutinize Harrell and his activities, he emerged as a person of interest. After obtaining a sample of DNA from Harrell, the tedious process of comparison analysis began. If it was apparent the public was impatient with how long the investigation was taking, just imagine the pressure on investigators. But the pressure to work fast never overshadowed the need to do it right and investigators proceeded carefully with their work.
While I know there is intense interest in knowing all of the details of the investigation and all of the evidence that has led us to this point, it is still necessary to protect the integrity of the future prosecution of this case.
I can tell you that in order to get to this point investigators have relied on statements from witnesses, admissions from the defendant, DNA technology results and evidence that Harrell was at the location on Gano Avenue when Somer disappeared along with other evidence.
I will also tell you that based on that evidence, along with our investigation, we are confident Jarred Harrell committed this crime; therefore we are bringing this murder charge today.
As a result of the Sheriff's Office filing an arrest charge on Harrell today, we have now transitioned from a Sheriff's Office investigation to a State Prosecution. All future public statements specific to the facts of the case or release of documents about this case will come from the State Attorney's Office, since they now have jurisdiction of this matter.
I want to take this opportunity thank the members of Team Somer for their tireless investigation of this case. The dedication to duty, their empathy for the family and their team spirit were all exemplary.
Many people have complimented me on the handling of this case and in every case I am quick to remind them it is Team Somer who should be commended and I know you all join me in commending this team of professionals.
I also want to add our concerns and prayers for the Thompson family who has endured so much pain for the past 5 months. I have met with Diena Thompson and informed her of today's developments.
And finally, I would like to thank the media for your professionalism and understanding throughout this difficult time.
We will entertain your questions at this time.

How very sad.

Diena seems like a strong, confident woman now.

She says she has no doubt Harrell will be found guilty by a jury of his peers.

We took a big step towards justice for Somer today.

Somer's Mom To Harrell: 'We Got You'
Mother Of 7-Year-Old Girl Killed In October Talks About Arrest In Murder Case

POSTED: Friday, March 26, 2010
UPDATED: 2:54 pm EDT March 26,2010
ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- Wearing her daughter's favorite color -- purple -- and surrounded by her closest family and friends, Diena Thompson, the mother of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, who was killed in October, thanked all of those who have supported her and those who were involved in the investigation leading to the arrest of Jarred Harrell, who is now charged with Somer's murder.

"One hundred-fifty-eight days ago, my 7-year-old twin daughter was walking home from school like a child should be allowed to do," Diena Thompson said. "And on this day, someone took her away from me, her siblings, my family and the world. A monster -- that's all this person is is a monster."

"Somer was such a bright star that never got her chance to shine," she said.

Harrell, 24, arrested in Mississippi on child pornography charges unrelated to the Somer case last month and extradited to Clay County, was charged at 6 a.m. Friday with premeditated murder and sexual battery.

"Justice is not fast as an impulse, and that's what this monster did: He had an impulse, and he took something away from me that no one will ever be able to give back to me," Thompson said.

Clay County deputies said that when Somer disappeared, Harrell lived in a house on Gano Avenue that she walked by every day on her way home from Grove Park Elementary School. His house was only a few doors from where Somer was last seen alive. Her body was found two days later in the Charlton County, Ga., landfill where Orange Park's trash is dumped.

"I stood here in front of all of you (158) days ago and said that 'We're coming to get you. We will get you. So I would like to take this opportunity to say to Jarred Harrell, 'We got you, and you ain't getting away,'" Thompson said.

Thompson said she had never seen Harrell in the community before, labeling him a complete stranger.

Thompson's older sister, who was standing next to her at the emotional news conference, appeared to be faint and fell forward, though she was said to be OK.

The emotion and heartache that's surrounded Somer's family and the community for the last five months could be seen on her mother's face.

"Somer is forever going to be in my heart and my mind," Thompson said.

Samuel Thompson, Somer's father, released the following statement via the law office of Leigh, James & Associates on Friday regarding Harrell's murder charge:

"Samuel Thompson would like to thank the Clay County Sheriff's Department for their diligent efforts in this matter. At this time, Mr. Thompson is not prepared to make a public statement. It is his intention to let the legal process run its course. On behalf of himself and his family, he would like to thank everyone in advance for respecting their privacy."

Somer Thompson: What did you make of mother’s challenge to ‘reclaim our children’s safety’?[/b]
Central Florida News 13, WESH, WFTV, WKMG, WOFL — posted by halboedeker on March, 26 2010 2:40 PM

Somer Thompson’s mother today challenged communities to help children, and she made her remarks shortly after a man was formally charged with her daughter’s murder.

“A lot of people have been saying since this happened, ‘This isn’t Mayberry anymore,’” Diena Thompson said at a news conference this afternoon. “We as parents, as community leaders, as citizens, we need to get together and figure out what it is that we’re not doing right. It’s time for us to do something different and let our children be allowed to walk home and play and ride their bikes. It’s time for us to reclaim our children’s safety and innocence.”

The Orange Park girl, who was 7, disappeared on her way home from school. Her body was later found in Georgia landfill. Jarred Harrell today was formally charged with Somer’s murder; he is in custody in the Clay County Jail.

The story was at the top of noon newscasts on WFTV-Channel 9, WKMG-Channel 6 and WESH-Channel 2, which carried the Clay County sheriff’s announcement of the murder charge. WOFL-Channel 35 broke into its regular schedule to carry the news. Central Florida News 13 carried Diena Thompson’s news conference this afternoon.

Harrell is being charged with first-degree premediated murder and rape, WFTV’s Jeff Deal said.

“They do have evidence that Harrell assaulted her, killed her and then dumped her body,” Deal said.

Diena Thompson also directed her comments to Harrell: “We got you and you ain’t getting away.” She also wondered, to a reporter’s question: “Why? Why would you do this? Why would you take away your life, your own life, for my 7-year-old daughter, my baby?”

What did you make of the mother’s comments?
